e of thing basically a piece of content on your site that is designed to rank or is designed to help your users in some way and as a regular viewer of the channel and subscriber you'll know that one great way to use your blog is to answer potential customers top questions with your posts so for example if someone is in the information or they're in the research stage of the buying cycle and they type in a question like which ex should i buy up pops your post you can then get them on your site yo
u can either send them through to the relevant page on the rest of your site or you can convert them using a low commitment informational stage call to action or you can run retargeting ads to them now if this is all sounding a little bit then let's have a look at some examples to make it feel real so here we have one of our clients sites and there are a large number of blogs on this site and you can see that these blogs are bringing in a decent volume of traffic and also a decent volume of lead
s over 328 conversions over the last six months now this business is selling a membership which is pretty high ticket so this is a very very good result for them now if we take a look at the exposure ninja website you will not be surprised at all to know we've used exactly this strategy for example if someone goes online and types in what is online pr here is a blog post which is ranking at the top of google if you search for advertise on google then number one result is actually google ads but
number two result is us and yet again it's a blog post that's ranking if you search for buy backlinks which of course you would never do then you have lots of paid ads from agencies that cannot get their own websites ranking for these terms because their backlinks do or don't work um and then you've got exposure ninja and we've ranked a training guide or a blog and what this means is that for us in common with many of our sites our blogs and our content on our site brings about two-thirds of our
organic traffic so get your blogs right and they can be a great source of traffic and also conversions for you but there's another benefit to blogs too then this particular blog post on their site has generated some tasty tasty links including from venturebeat casino gazette they're in the gambling space and uh none other than the guardian so that's the great thing about writing blogs is that when you've got a really good quality blog and it's really authoritative on the topic when somebody els
e is writing a piece or a journalist is writing and they need to source some information they need they need another source to credit often they'll go onto google and they'll type in the question or they'll type the thing and if your blog post is ranking then you can pick up some links from that piece does that make sense so by having high ranking blogs you actually become a source for other businesses that are writing content when they need to refer out to other sources all right great tim so w
e get it we understand why ranking vlogs is important super how do we actually write blogs that get ranked excellent question now the first thing to note is that you will write lots of blogs that don't get ranked this isn't like something where you'll have a hundred percent success rate what we tend to find is we can research and we can do loads of really great blogs not everyone will win there's a real 80 20 thing going on here where 20 of the blogs that you write will generate 80 of your traff
ic so that's the first thing what that means is that if you write one post and it doesn't immediately blow up and traffic start crashing your server then don't worry keep going keep doing more because you never know which one is going to win ahead of time so that being said let's look at the process that you can use to start identifying what to write about and how to craft these blogs so the first thing to do is obviously topic selection you need to know what you're going to be talking about a g
reat place to start here is to talk to your customers or talk to your sales team to find out what sorts of questions people have now it's worth keeping in mind that people have different questions at each stage of the buying journey so whatever model you use whether it's attention interest desire action i personally use a much simpler model which is basically curiosity research and intent okay so imagine that you're going to buy something you'll typically go through three stages the first stage
is when you're aware that this thing or you might have a problem this is the curiosity stage so you're on love island you see someone with really white teeth you're like teeth whitening right you're curious at the moment you're not ready to buy you're just looking at different options then you start going into the research phase so this is when you start digging a little bit down and you start sorting possible solutions so you're doing your love island research and you see oh they've got really
white teeth great so we've got a few different options here it looks like it looks like we've got a teeth whitening strips it looks like we've got you know professional teeth whitening we've got a machine that beams the lasers into your face or you know whatever right so at that stage you're in the research phase so you might start looking at things like crest whitening strips reviews okay that might be a phrase that you're interested in as you're trying to narrow down your different options the
n you'll move into the intent phase so this is when you start really looking for something to buy so crest whitening strips free delivery for example so we've got the different stages of the buyer journey and your customers are going to have different questions or different needs at different stages so in this phase you're really doing some thinking and you're brainstorming and you're just jotting down ideas what sort of things would your customers be asking if they've got the problem that you s
olve or they're looking for a solution like yours the next thing that you want to do is to start validating those guesses with some tools so we use a few tools for this kind of blog topic research here at exposure ninja number one tool top of the pile completely free answer the public so we'll head over to answer the public let's say for example now i've just bought a video tripod so that the camera doesn't shake when i jiggle around right because i jiggle around sometimes so what we might do is
go to answerthepublic.com and type in video tripod and what this is going to do you've probably seen answer the public it's going to give you all of the questions that people are asking about video tripods so these questions could make good potential blog posts now there aren't too many for video tripod which is kind of interesting let's have a look at what they are the tripods video game what is a video tripod where to buy video tripod can you use a video tripod for photography how to choose a
video tripod how much is a video tripod how to use a video tripod video on a tripod okay so not the best example in the world but video track we've got some more down here video tripod for ipad video tripod for photography uh video tripod for dslr video tripod for iphone video tripod on wheels so you can see lots of different kind of variations and questions that people have now what we're really looking for here is we're looking for questions or we're looking for searches which indicate somebo
dy is in either the curiosity or the research phase typically because if someone is typing something like buy video tripod they're in the buying phase so google is usually going to show buying results right it's going to show pages that have commercial intent rather than these information pages so things like how to choose a video tripod absolutely perfect okay perfect sort of topic to write a blog post so let's head over to google now and let's just have a look how to choose a video tripod and
just see what we've got so let's have a look firstly we can see that there is a featured snippet so this is clearly an informational search let's open that one we'll also have a look at this one and this one as well you can also see that there are some videos here now we'll come back to that in a minute okay so we think that that might be a good potential keyword to target and maybe a good blog topic to run so what we're going to do next is we're going to go over to semrush or any tool that give
s you keyword volume and we're just going to check that enough people are searching for this topic okay so we're just gonna stick this in the keyword overview let's say that we're targeting the uk now at the moment it's saying there's no search volume for this hmm that will be a consideration but it wouldn't necessarily put me off because actually i think that this is quite a relevant term and whilst semrush is great there's an seo tools data shootout that we did it's not perfect so i don't trus
t this 100 i don't believe that nobody each month is searching for video tripod nevertheless we might want to take this into consideration let's say for example that we want to try a phrase like best video tripods instead to see what sort of volume that has so semrush is telling us that there are 110 searches per month or 1200 searches around the world each month on average and we've got an indicative cost per click of 0.3 dollars which means that there is some commercial intent there advertiser
s are willing to spend money for this phrase which makes sense because it is a kind of semi-commercial informational phrase so this to me looks like a good phrase so i was gonna go to how to choose a video tripod maybe now i'm gonna go a bit more towards best video tripods so once i've picked my topic and there's some search volume in there and it seems to be relevant for my business the next thing i'm gonna do is head over to google and i'm gonna search for it now before i've even searched look
what's happening here it's giving me best video tripods best video tripod 2020 best video tripod under 200 best video tripod head all of these are potential blog posts okay so what you might do is something called the fishbone strategy where you write best video tripods this is a really long detailed post and then you use these as kind of sub posts which sit underneath it these might also be subheadings in your blog post when we talk later about how to create your blog we'll talk about how to c
hoose headings for your blog these would make great subheadings so best video tripod under 200 under 300 over 500 best video tripod for mirrorless camera best video tripod for dslr best video tripod for compact camera so you can see here how this is post is actually starting to write itself anyway stick to the topic at hand tim so first thing that we're going to do is analyze these best ranking pages now if we're going to beat these blog posts in ranking we need to deserve to beat them in rankin
g so we need to make something which google can say yeah do you know what you have written a better post than digital camera world so we're gonna reward you with top ranking so that's the kind of frame that we're looking at this from here we go the best video tripod in 2021 so we see that they've targeted that year search which is a savvy move then every year you just update the title uh camera supports with fluid head for video makers okay so we've got some kind of related terms in here as well
then we've got a subheading which here are the best video tripods great so we're telling google that it's relevant uh the best video tripods also used in the first paragraph so looking pretty good so far then we've got alternative content topics and this is a really interesting strategy now there's two ways of doing this first is by using a table of contents which they've kind of got on this side which is designed to basically do two things firstly get me to the information that's most relevant
for me as quickly as possible which is a good thing so it decreases bounce rate but the second thing is if i click on this i'm interacting with the page they're going to see it as not being a bounce which helps them understand how people are using the page but on this section they've actually got kind of related content which is a kind of interesting strategy because they're already trying to drag me away from this blog post but the reason that they're doing that is in case one of these topics
looks even more relevant than the article i've landed on what they're really trying to avoid is people bouncing back to the search results page okay cool so we'll have a look through this post but it looks really in-depth um it's you know complete looks like an affiliate post so they're obviously these are all affiliate links that they're being uh rewarded for and that's great we've got a bit of information about each one we've got a picture uh we've got some pros and cons these little pros and
cons are really easy to consume which i really like but there's not loads of detail they definitely could have gone into more detail here first thing i could do is have more tripods there was only 10 on this page i could maybe have more that might help people particularly if i categorize them under you know they've got three categories here but if i had a top 10 for each one and then i had categories for under 200 under 500 whatever the the price benchmarks are that could really help but i'm als
o thinking i could give a bit more detail about each tripod potentially finding a video either recording it myself or adding one from youtube about each of these tripods because that might keep people on the page a little bit longer let's have a look at this post so firstly this site looks a little bit more basic recent post at the time of filming this it's january 2021 so this is a recent post similar kind of thing looks like an affiliate site got a bit of information here we don't have any eas
ily comparable stats so pros and cons i can't see a table of all their features it's actually quite difficult for me to remember what's being covered here so i'm seeing this there's a lot of detail which is great but maybe it's not as useful as it could be so i'm starting to think you know what i probably could beat this on quality all right let's have a look at this one so wex is an e-commerce site it looks like uh this is an old post from 2019 so immediately i'm thinking hello let's update thi
s for the year and that could help us because that's going to increase our click-through rate from google if people see that it's more up to date then we've got affordable tripods that's not what i searched i searched best right so this may or may not even be relevant to me so if i see stuff like this ranking i'm thinking this is cool i might be able to beat this stuff then it's all focused on the more budget end of the market oh no then we've got some more up here but it's really confusingly la
id out they didn't tell me that that's what they were going to do so i land on this and think well if i'm not at the budget end of the market then this isn't the post for me so there's a layout tweak i would do here so you can see that as you're looking through your competitors blog post the ones that are ranking for the term that you're interested in targeting you're just looking at what are they doing well what could you improve on what would you change all you're trying to do is build up a pi
cture in your mind of what does the best possible post for this term look like now generally the quality bar with blog posts is rising and it's rising fast so the stuff that we'd write in 2017 to get ranks doesn't really stand a chance today a lot of the stuff that we're writing now is much longer form and you'll tend to find that longer posts work well there is a caveat here if you're just giving someone a very quick answer to a question then forcing them to hunt through pages and pages of dens
e body copy can be a real challenge and can actually increase your bounce rate so you want to give people the right amount of information for them but usually if you can give them some good information then give them a lot more detail if they prefer to dig through all of that that's a really good start so the next thing to think about is how you actually write your post so how we tend to format a post like this would be firstly to choose your heading now this would be the phrase that you're targ

to identify what your subheadings in your blog post might be a lot of people really struggle to write longer form posts which are interesting and relevant but what we're really doing here is we're identifying lots of subtopics or sub questions that people might have about that topic and then we're just using those as headers writing a bit of information about those and before you know it you have a monster blog post if we look at some of the ones that are ranking for example um how to advertise
on google and earn more traffic from our website which is ranking second for advertise on google you can see that what we've done is we've broken down the sub questions that people would have so what is google ads how does google ads work what the benefits of using google ads how much does google ads cost how to advertise with google ads long long infographic how to advertise on google maps information about that how to advertise on youtube how to track google ads success so we've written a real
ly long in-depth and detailed post you'll also see that we've used other media types as well so for example video so you can either record video yourself or you can embed third-party assets so here we've added an image from bestppc.marketing now we've credited them so we're being legit we're not stealing it and using it as our own they've got a link out of it but doing this type of thing gives you a much richer and more engaging post it's really important if you're going to rank your blogs that
they are engaging and they are informative because if they have a very low time on page or if they have a very high bounce rate what you might find is that the ranking starts to suffer so you want really engaging useful informative posts so these kind of sub headlines are great because they allow you to break up the topic you might also want to include a linkable table of contents in your blog post if it's really long to help people find the right section for them quickly and easily what about w
riting style how do we need to write these well the general rule of thumb is to imagine your best sales person talking to your best customer that should be the sort of level that you're pitching your blog at so if you're a very technical business and you're talking very technical to your very technical customers then it's okay to write a technical blog post on the other hand if your customers are relatively new to your market and they don't really know how to buy from you then your best sales pe

you're in a very uncompetitive market ranking blog posts takes time sometimes you can just leave the post and it will increase in ranking over time as google starts testing traffic to it people start finding it naturally sometimes you might want to give it a little bit of a boost so some of the things that we've done for example doing outreach to that blog post let's say for example that you put together the best video tripods 2021 guide well you might want to do some research out to sites that
are used by video makers and say hey i've just put together this ultimate guide to video tripods in 2021 is this the sort of thing that you think your audience would find interesting or maybe would you like me to write a version of this guide for your site or would you like me to give you the comparison table from this guy to have on your site they will say yeah cool why not let's do it and then you get a link back to your site when they include the table you might also want to compile some data

m with some actionable tips how do you write blog posts that rank at the top of google well the first thing is to map out the questions that your potential customers might be asking which would indicate that they are a potential customer of yours the second thing that we did is gather some data and do a bit more research around these questions so we used answer the public we use google's own suggestions in the search bar and then when we found a topic that we thought we might want to target we p
ut it through semrush to check that there was some search volume there the next thing that we did is compete the research so we had a look at what the sites and the pages already ranking for those terms did so we could start to get a feel for what we're gonna need to do to unseat those top ranking blog posts then we wrote our post we used the different subheadings and we made sure our post was detailed enough that it could be the most detailed post for that topic but not overkill and we didn't w
ant to bury the information that people really needed in dense hard to find body copy we still want to make our post engaging so we may have added a linkable content section or even just nice clear sub headlines so that people can find the information they need as quickly as possible then we put it through the hemingway app and checked it with grammarly to make sure it was tickety-boo we added any media that we could either from our own media assets like youtube or whatever or we found stuff on
