it had been nearly 20 years since the outbreak began and life had changed dramatically for the remnants of humanity most people who survived those first chaotic years went into hiding carving Out secret shelters deep below the ruined cities Jeff LED one such underground community living off what they could scavenge from sewer systems and abandoned subway tunnels that snaked beneath the streets over time they had established hydroponic Farms electricity from old generators and even schools for th
e children born underground it was a hard life but they were safe from the shambling hordes above every month Jeff sent out scouting parties to search for supplies on the surface it was a dangerous job but necessary to keep their civilization thriving in the darkness on one such Mission Tom's group had ventured nearly 10 miles from their underground Refuge when they spotted signs of activity in a section of track long collapsed curiosity got the better of them and they pried aside a heavy metal
grate to Peak inside at first all they saw was Blackness but as their eyes adjusted they began to make out shapes moving in the depths below they were not the usual mindless Undead either these creatures moved with purpose and from the cavernous depths arose an almost intelligible sound like speech but not quite human a chill ran down Tom's spine as he realized it was coming from the creatures mingling in the darkness far below the team scattered racing back through the Maze of tunnels as fast a
s they could whatever was down there seemed to be gathering in numbers far greater than any zombie horn Bo they had encountered on the surface when Tom finally returned to report his Discovery Jeff knew they had a new and dire threat that night an emergency meeting was called in the main settlement whatever is down there it's not like the usual infected Tom warned the crowd they were communicating moving together with purpose I think some new kind of infection has developed one that doesn't Rob
them of all intelligence murmurs of fear arose from the assembled group Jeff took the floor if what Tom says is true those creatures could pose a grave new threat even to our underground Sanctuary we'll need to investigate further but carefully I'm putting together a small reconnaissance team to go back observe from a distance and try to learn more without being seen any volunteers a few brave souls stepped forward including Beth one of their most skilled Scouts the next day Beth's team headed b
ack through the tunnels moving stealthily with weapons drawn as they approached the collapse section strange chanting noises began to Echo up from the deps peering down through Scopes and binoculars they saw a nightmarish sight dozens of the infected milled about far below but they seemed to be gathering in an organized manner and in the center stood one that seemed to be communicating waving its arms and vocalizing in an almost articulate fashion it was rallying the others and more kept floodin
g in from unseen tunnels Beyond they're building an army down there Beth whispered in horror she had seen enough they had to warn the others immediately but as the team turned to leave a lone infected stumbled into view on the the track behind them it spotted the scouts and let out an inhuman whale that echoed through the tunnels their cover was blown and an answering chorus Rose from the cavern below the reconnaissance team fled as quickly as they could pursued by a small group of the infected
they barely made it back alive slamming the heavy steel gate behind them the underground is no longer safe Beth gasped out of breath the that thing has an army and it's smart I think it saw us as a threat we have to evacuate before its horde finds a way through a grim decision faced the underground city after so many years of safety in the darkness they now had an even deadlier Force Gathering just beyond their borders they would have to abandon their hidden refuge and take their chances on the
surface to have any hope of survival the remnants of human ity were being pushed ever further to the brink of Extinction
