This is the true culture of heavy metal. The Devil’s music. The music of rebellion & freedom. That was satanic. That performance was like a ritual. I've never seen anything like that performance, that I just saw. This is the Bangalore Open Air Festival. Greetings Friends, did you know that India has a 2 day metal festival? And for the last 12 years metallers from around India, and now the world, have been coming here to Bengaluru to experience this epic metal festival. And I’m gonna take you beh
ind the scenes because I have full access. Let's go and check out the Bangalore Open Air Festival. Welcome to Bengaluru in India's beautiful state of Karnataka. This state can take you back in time to ancient India and also to the future because it's one of India's most important I.T. hubs. And if you love dosa, this is dosa heaven. Now, before I tell you about the line up, the venue, the fans, and the food. Let's get straight into the music. All right. I've met the first foreigner here. What's
your name? Where are you from? Isabella. I'm from Colorado. And I'm here because I saw one of his videos, like, two months ago about being at this festival. Ow my God, that is so cool. That's like, it feels good, cause I want foreigners to come to this incredible metal festival. Yeah, Yeah, it seems really cool. - Who do you want to see here? All of them, Honestly, especially the Indian bands. Because I’ve never seen Indian bands before. - Oh, you gotta watch Godless, ok? So nice to meet you. An
d thanks for coming. Okay. There's one band that I can hassle before they go on stage because I'm friends with them. So, Abbas, how are you feeling before you go on stage? Before every gig? - Excited. Pumped, na? - Yeah, pumped. And can you tell us, like, what's going on on stage? Like, what all happens on stage? Everything? So that's why I don't hassle these guys before the show. So, come. Have a good show, man. Bangalore! Now, I’m sure you're all wondering which bands are performing here toda
y. I'm in the sound & light area right now. So what kind of festival is this? This certainly ain't a soft rock festival. This is an extreme metal festival. Like last year, we had Mayhem headlining, how epic is that? This year we have the metallers In Flames. We have the death metal. We’ve got Decapitated. We got black metal, we’ve got Watain. And we got German rock gods Kreator. And so there's no Metallica, there's no Slipknot. But that's the beauty of it. Salman, one of the promoters, he works
for Wacken. He works every year at the Wacken music festival and he handpicks the acts that we're going to see here on stage tonight. And it's high on music discovery. Yeah, you've heard of the headliners, but maybe you haven't heard of Decapitated. I hadn't heard of Decapitated, so I went and looked them up. And I'm like, “Damn, Salman, you know how to choose bands.” These guys are world class! What’s up India? So good to be back. So good to see you. I hope you’re doing well, right? Listen, bef
ore we start, I have to tell you something. We got the bad news, and a good news. We start from the bad news, unfortunately because of a visa issue we cannot bring our drummer. So just 3 of us today. And our great crew. But the good news is that James, our drummer, yesterday he has been spending all night recording the tracks for you. Now we are f****** ready to play some Polish death metal for you. But my question now is, are you f****** ready? Decapitated frickin rocked. I wasn't sure they cou
ld do it without the drummer, but na na na! That shows their level of musicianship and why they're known as one of the best technical death metal bands. Man, Poland knows how to rock. So, when you come to the Bangalore Open Air Festival, I can guarantee you that you will walk away a fan of a new band. This festival nails the music discovery and the joy of music discovery And just wait until you hear the price for two days... Hey Karl... - Hey Buddy, you alright? For two days, $85 American. Or $4
2.50 a day if you just want to come for one day. It's incredibly value. You won't find that anywhere else. And I think I should give you a tour of the venue now. Shwo you what all is included in that. Because it's not just it's not just the festival. A lot more going on around here. This year we have a brand new and bigger venue to cater for the thousands of metalheads attending. Inside, we have a free meet and greet tent. I love this. You can see the band rock and also meet them. I can't explai
n how much it means to meet someone you admire a lot. How inspiring that is. And it becomes a treasured memory. And that reminds me, I used to work in the music industry for Sony, and I do have some stories of meeting a lot of different artists. And I've only got one bad story from meeting from meeting them. It was clown from Slipknot. I met him at a signing tent overseas in New Zealand and I go to him, “You guys are going to rock tonight?” It was a stupid thing to say. I was a little like, like
16 year old dude. I was like, “You guys going to rock tonight?” And he pushes the table into me and he goes, “What do you think?” “What do you think?” Like that? Like angry at me. Like angry at a little teenager. Who’s just so excited to see him and Joey Jordison was sitting next to him. Just how he reacted to so angrily, and violently, like, “What do you think?” Ah yeah, it made me really disappointed, actually. I was like, F that guy, I still love the rest of the band. I still love the band t
hough. But, you know, maybe he's got his own issues to treat a little kid like that, a little fan like that. That was the only bad memory. Then we have a big merch tent with probably the cheapest merch prices in the world. There’s corpse face painting, a wheelchair platform, shopping, toilets, and of course, food and drink. We'll check out the food later because it sure is unique. Now let's go backstage and find the two boys who put on this rock show. I have snuck into the backstage area, and we
've even got a pool. We've got a pool for the bands here in India. And just you can see the beautiful tropical vibe here and are you getting the blue in the sky? Bengaluru is just beautiful. It's a beautiful place to play a gig. Decapitated is here, but I'm not going to hassle any of the bands. The last thing they want is some YouTuber shoving my camera in their face while they're getting ready to go on stage because it's such a it's a sacred time before the band goes on stage. They go to get in
the mood and, you know, get ready to give their all on stage. So, yeah, exactly the time you don't want to hassle these dudes, so I'm going to respect that. They're all behind in the tents there. All right. I'm here with the man of the hour. One of them. This is man Salman. This is his gig. This is also Saurabh’s gig, who we're going to find soon. Salman, how the hell do you organise six foreign bands to come here, and six Indian bands? How do you do that, man? Because the line up’s incredible.
I don't know. But just getting like 50 or 60 foreigners here. How? That's pretty cool! I think one of the reasons is because India is an exotic country. And whenever I ask people, “Hey, you know, the metal in India” And they’re like, “Oh, really?” Not many people still know that there’s metal in India. Yeah. This video is going to show them, okay. Is it getting easier to tell foreigners, “Bro, there’s metal here, come.” Are they getting it? Like the foreign bands? Yeah. Well, the thing is, fore
igners get to watch all these bands in their home country. Probably playing every weekend. Yeah. - But what they don't get is the awesomeness of our beautiful country. Yeah. - So you come here for an experience. You don't come to watch bands, you come to India to enjoy what India is. And then also attend a metal gig. That’s what you're doing for Karnataka. Yeah. So you're bringing people, you're bringing foreigners to Karnataka for the food, for the people, for the music, and to experience this
incredible state and this incredible city. Yeah. So it's more than just a metal festival. It's tourism as well. This guy's like the Ministry of Tourism for Karnataka here, so. Yeah, man, Thank you for all you do. - Thanks. Thanks a lot for coming. And I hope you had a good time yesterday at the Wacken Metal Battle. Yeah. Yeah, it was awesome. I was a judge yesterday, so let's get back to the venue and we'll find Saurabh of the other partner in the metal festival. I’m calling these guys the unoff
icial mascots of the Bangalore Open Air Festival. Who are you here for, bro? Like, what's the one performance you can't miss tonight? Tonight it’s Kreator. - Yeah. I watched them live in Wacken this year. Oh you went to Germany? - I went to Germany to watch them. That was an epic first day. Epic. Tomorrow is going to be a lot heavier. So I'm really tired. Let's go to bed and I'll see you in the morning. Greetings Friends, it is day 2 and it's going to be a very heavy and dark day today. We have
Burning Witches, then we have what I'm looking forward to the most, Watain. They're going to put on a very demonic show. I can assure you of that. So do wait around for that. And then, headlining tonight, we have In Flames. We’re nearly at the venue and you can just see this venue is on the outskirts. So we're driving through little villages and the outskirts of Bengaluru city. Bangalore! Let’s go! What we do is what we believe in. What we do is what we believe in. What we do is what we believe
in. All right, so this is Indian hospitality. We've got our friend from California here again. And this dude just gave her a ride home last night after the festival. How cool is that? That was my first motorcycle ride ever, and he was, like, so shocked to hear that. I'm so happy for you guys. I’m just glad I could get her home safely. I'm so glad that she came here. She made some friends at the festival because she came alone. So. Yeah. I'm so happy for you guys. Alright, have fun! Now, so this
is the front area of the stage here. This this is a confetti machine. Yeap, we're having confetti tonight. It's going to pop it in the sky. These are flame machines. And there's a lot of flame machines, as you can see. Behind we’ve got subwoofers, there playing Pantera. Up here... We've got the speaker stack. They've got a really, really good sound system here today. We’ve got cameramen because a documentary is being made here. Now, let me take you backstage. Fully backstage. Behind the stage. A
ll right. So these are touring cases. We've got a backstage kind of makeup area here. The bands will enter from this side of the stage and we can see some of the Ankor members here now. And if you come up on the stage, We’ve got audio gear. And this is where the in-ear mix is going to happen. Due to the shocking nature of some of Watain’s props, I can’t show you them in this video. I will however upload an uncensored version for my channel members. It's a messy show, man. Just wait. Wait till yo
u see. You'll see tonight. You'll see what what they up to. This is Watain’s guitars here. And you can see that's blood on the guitar. Leftover blood from all the different shows. They don't clean it. It's all kind of rusted and beautiful. These guys are going to put on an incredible show tonight. And this is one of their techs just getting the guitars ready right here. And they've got a lot of equipment. So we've got we've got candles. These have been made locally. This Trident. This is going t
o be on fire all throughout the show. And then we have these going to be on fire, all their different stage props. These have been hand-painted by the band. So, yeah, they're getting ready really early, actually, like 3 in the afternoon. But their tech is going to have all their equipment ready before they hit the stage tonight And just see this bass. It's just been it's just been tuned. And this left hand side of the stage, this is the setting up the drums and they just push this drum riser out
onto the stage. And of course, we have the roadies that are touring with the artists, and he's busy setting up the bass for Ankor. So it's not only the artists that are coming on tour, they have quite a few people they bring with them as well. Awesome set, Man. Awesome set. Thanks a lot, Man. The Watain boys are getting ready right now. They're going to put on a crazy show. Nothing like India's ever seen before, I don't think. And ah, they went to Goa for a couple of days before this show. Alot
of bands like to relax after a long flight rather than going straight and hit the stage. It's very difficult to do that. Very difficult to give your best. They're just putting Watain’s little ritual counter on stage. The audience likes that man! Whoa. Alright, The boys are coming from Watain now. Here we go. One by one. Ladies and Gentlemen of the ancient kingdom and country of India. It took us 25 years, but we are finally here. It is a great honour to be in this ancient lands tonight. Lands t
hat still hold much history and many secrets. Well, we are Watain. And we have come to this eastern lands from the distant north. And we are brought with us from that place much history and many secrets as well. It is our hope that tonight those secrets will be shared, that ecstasy will be shared, and in all that we do here will be a communion with something that is far greater than both Sweden and India put together. Alright, guys, it’s time to review the food now. Because we are here in India,
we are going to have we've got an incredible array of different Indian foods. From like chicken kebabs to veg. palau, veg. pakora, samosas, ghobi manchurian, you can't go wrong here. Nothing better than like a metal festival and Indian food combined, isn’t that right? Look what we have here. This is a huge, huge plate of chicken biryani. Ginormous. And, yeah, just ₹300. Okay. You know biryani is good when you can find the spices. We've got a bigger cardamom in there. It's the most expensive sp
ice as well, besides saffron. It's a hit with the food, and the prices are just incredible. There’s a cameraman! If there will be any time in your f****** life to crowd surf, this is it! F*** that camera and get into the f****** pit. Come on! What an incredible, incredible two days. Man, I met people from like Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, everywhere, everywhere. Absolutely everybody's here. And the Bangalore Open Air Festival has now on the map. My question t
o you is, where are you? Why aren’t you here? Are you going to come next year?

@KarlRock

Have you been to a metal gig before? My favourite gig was Pantera in 2001! Next, watch me go behind the scenes at the '23 festival https://youtu.be/tpxQFcSG1lY

@GodlessIndia

Epic video, dude. Thanks for covering Indian metal and the immense support. Cheers 🔥🤘

@abhisheksawanthxc

I don't have enough words to thank the entire BOA team for turning my dream into reality. These were the two best days of my life. I'm a huge In Flames fan and they were one of those bands I stepped into heavy metal with. A week before the show, I painted "In Flames We Trust" on a huge mount board out of pure excitement and when the band acknowledged it, there was no better feeling than that. There was this moment when Björn (In Flames' lead guitarist) and I had an eye contact, and he smiled at me as I screamed the lyrics of The Mirror's Truth at him - that memory will stay with me forever. I also wanted to say hi to Karl, but unfortunately, I felt too nervous to approach him. I first discovered this channel back in 2018, even spotted him once in my hometown of Jammu! I've been a regular follower ever since. Thanks for once again covering this event, Karl. Looking forward to seeing you next year as well.

@niccindia

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Karl. The journey of organizing a Metal Festival in India is a rollercoaster of emotions, especially when it comes to securing sponsorship. Convincing brands to support this event feels like an uphill battle, as it's tough to make them see the magic of this incredible audience. The struggle doesn't end with just raising sponsorship; keeping it alive over time is a relentless fight. The heart of metal music beats strong, yet it's still considered a niche genre in India. Gaining acceptance from the broader public is like trying to move mountains. The logistical challenges are daunting, with infrastructural limitations and bureaucratic hurdles testing our resolve at every turn. And then there's the Herculean task of attracting international metal bands to our shores, with high travel costs, visa issues, and their unfamiliarity with the Indian market adding layers of complexity. But amidst all these challenges, our passion, perseverance, and strategic planning shine like beacons of hope. It's a tough journey, no doubt, but the reward of uniting the metal community and showcasing this genre in India is a dream worth fighting for. I am profoundly grateful to have such an incredible team backing us in this festival. Thank you again for your unwavering support. Together, we stand strong: #InMetalWeTrust.

@YeshwantP

What the hell?? I made to a @KarlRock video too?? Man, Bangalore Open Air just keeps on giving. Metal music has a unique way of bringing people together, and Bangalore Open Air 2024 was not just a festival; it was a journey of making cherished memories, meeting musical idols, and connecting with like-minded souls. Here's to the power of heavy metal and the friendships it forges in the most unexpected places! 🤘Thank you so much for documenting this epic experience and it was great meeting you in person too! Your coverage of last years BOA compelled me to attend this year and it was the best decision ever!

@prolazn1k

Watain is my favorite black metal band.... this is amazing, didn't have a clue India has such an strong metal community. Thank you Karl for showing this 🤘 Support from Croatia 🤘

@meathead667

This edition of Bangalore Open Air has proved that metal is still alive and pretty much kickin' in India. Heartening to see a more diverse crowd this time around. More power to you Team BOA \m/ Only onwards and upwards from here! Neatly documented Karl, thanks!

@thankmyluckyscars

Love to see this happening in India! These are incredibly talented musicians and it's great to see a festival like this happening there. Hope it was amazing and the fans loved every second. Great vid as always. Thanks for showing us all different parts of India we normally don't get to see ❤

@voxel_sc

Its nice to see that indian people are open to death and black metal. It would be a blast to play there as an opener or support act <3 PS : Decapitated are fucking gods in the scene, one of the most respected bands in Death Metal. Everybody should give them a try!

@adityanadgauda

Ayyy, made it on the video, feels quite surreal. Working backstage this year at the festival was an insane experience, definitely a peak moment in my life. Got to meet a lot of my teenage heroes up close, bumped into you a few times at the fest, got a fookin pick from Chris Broderick and got to learn quite a lot in the process. Cheers to Salman, Manaswi and the other members of the core team who made it possible. They're the last bastion of the Indian Metal Scene. See you next year around Karl! Was lovely meeting you. Long time fan of the channel.

@Patshes

Carl Rock and roll!!! 🆒😎🤘🤘🤘! Might be your best video ever!!!

@Vicki_Benji

This is great!! Thanks for sharing!! 🤘🏻

@lordturbomose4982

To be honest, I'm not a regular viewer of your videos, but I've stumbled across a few of your videos here and there and have always found them quite interesting and I've always found you to be a very pleasant character. But I had no idea you were a fellow metalhead. Makes you even more likeable to me! To be honest, it doesn't surprise me, because in my experience metal fans are often the nicest, most socially acceptable and most open minded people ever. Thanks for the great video, I actually didn't know about this festival, it's great that you want to make it known. Love and greetings from Germany!

@uderzo1984

The festival has great energy, awesome metal heads, you can tell how much love they have for the bands :D
