st wanted to investigate that's all well now you're set up with internal affairs your own special Squad a cop's cop with your little broom going whis whis whis whis if that's it hey I didn't mean to insult you Frank I just wanted to see your face face again the face of a small time detective just the kind you put on Mickey Mouse stuff like this hey you see it is like old times I sign the case and you do the dirty work on the gate hey jaffet that girl what's her name uh Wallace's daughter I hear
she left you is it true [Music] [Music] yeah way I hear it is practically running that prison same as he ran the detective division heart always understood power still far everything he says checks out where the hell does he get his information some from in prison some from before he was a chief he knew everything does he really expect to get brownie points Fe his junk like that Harden is his only hope Frank but don't expect him to crawl no hard never crawled for anybody Frank thanks anyway this
came in yesterday some Vietnamese refugees got a restaurant in Chinatown says it were detective in Saigon during the war was you asking for a job it seems that um he read in the papers about this uh this homicide we've got this girl tied up in his weird way dumped into the river says that in Saigon in 75 he investigated a similar case en Clos these photographs he h of something MH that's the same rig who's got the case Ray boys why don't you give these to him you know him yeah anyway there's a
special element here now this Vietnamese guy doesn't spell it out but um the implication is clear enough H what's the implication the back in saon when he thought he was on to something what he thought he was on to was another cop why don't you and Aon take a trip over there have some dinner for yourself and talk to this guy you got it thanks friend oh uh what about the grelis oh there'll be something you can count on it go on check them out [Music] [Applause] her name was Marie Evans she was a
hooker took boys a week to find that out no one's claimed her no one cares about her including boys that's it pretty much boys figures it was a rough trick says hoopers are always getting themselves whacked didn't he care why we were interested nah he's kind of slow Frank so how's your personal life Barren sometimes I even regret my divorce how's things going with you well as always Jean I tell you sometimes the way she looks at you Frank yeah Jean's a great g a good detective too yeah yeah she'
s a cop it's not what you want sometimes I'm not so sure exactly what I do want hard tells me I'm Small Time forget it Frank it's How He makes himself feel big remember he wasn't such a hot shot detective but he knows how to control people yeah that he knows how to do that he knows how to do 1975 final week of the war very unusual case girl dumped into the Saigon River she was a singer her name was uh bakk means white bamboo H what happened was very brutal brutal in what way the way in which she
was tied here tied kind of a peculiar harness pulley and The Noose by struggling she strangled herself genius but very cruel yes very cruel did you make an arrest no any ideas I knew he was an American how'd you know that three reasons why it's three first there was the crime itself a psycho murder so we never have sadistic psycho murders in our culture never never Lieutenant second the victim sang in a nightclub that catered primarily to GIS but the third reason and the most important I found
a witness a 9-year-old boy who saw the body being pulled from an official United States car he drew me this picture notice the armband the child drew the letters backwards but it is the uniform of an American MP that close to the end of the war there couldn't have been that many MPS around around 50 no more than 100 but people were distracted and the officials I I I just could not get a list okay what happened then about 2 weeks later my country fell and my advisor Mr Hunter he got my family and
myself out but I could never forget B to I'm finished business [Music] yeah I don't get it since when does IAD care about a hooker we got X MPS that's why wof got interested the military trains them they like the work they come to us they're disciplined motivated they usually make good cops yeah so what if this MP if he was an MP went into something else maybe he became a grosser or a plumber seems to me the odds are pretty long yeah they're long you got to admit they're interesting 1975 a bar
girl gets killed in Saigon 13 years later a hooker gets killed the same way here now that's strange no it's strange all right I'll give you that get in touch with immigration find out more about Quinn I try to locate that adviser his Hunter see what he says if he remembers the case we're going to need to run a computer search so we need a list contact the Pentagon get the name of every MP that served the saon area say 2 weeks before the murder until right up to the end run them up against area r
esident lists voting lists phone books list the local law enforcement Personnel merch and see if we get overlaps right you got it morning Internal Affairs division what can I do for you m he's not in yet want to leave a message how's it going with tempkin meeting with the prosecutors at 2:00 sounds good want to sit in yeah I'll uh I'll try to make it s not busy are you no I got nothing to do good I want you give me a rundown on these guys yourell Brothers find out everything you can how good the

was alive when she was bitten marks like this I made an impression of the teeth similar but I'd have to examine the body sorry it happened 13 years ago in another country far away sure I remember North Vietnamese armies were rolling down the coast Saigon was in a strangle hold we were all wondering if we'd ever get out of there alive and there was Quinn carrying on about this singer insisting that her killer had to be an American an American MP what do you think maybe he was maybe he wasn't you
'd wonder why a guy who would do a thing like that would wear an armband use an official car I'll tell you Quinn struck us as being pretty good he was a fine detective not corrupt like a lot of them were over there still I had this feeling he seemed to change when he got that case became some kind of a fanatic I never did figure out what was bugging him but like he wanted the killer to be an American Mr Hunter why do you suppose that was it was a strange time Sergeant you see I think like a lot
of Vietnamese he blamed us for the collapse of his country like a lot of them he was looking for escape go yeah yeah oh Lieutenant janick yeah uh this is Joe Gates I'm the woman who yeah I remember um I'm calling to apologize for what for saying you were rude I probably was look let's just forget it huh no no um I respect cops and I I was the one being rude I wanted you to know that am am I giving you at a bad time oh no no no not at all um Lieutenant I I hope that you don't think that I'm too B

what he brought her was supposed to be in exchange for information but it didn't take long for Jerry to get all of her information and after that it was just for fun she liked it yeah nice thing about Jerry she once told me was that he knew she did drugs did tricks and still he didn't care really why not oh he care because he cared about her but he did not judge her that's that's what she meant Marie once told me that she and Jerry and me we were the same kind of people what kind of people's tha

et's take him [Music] so what about about Marie Evans we were lovers okay so why didn't you say that I just did would not up front you didn't well I get it you want to see a Sweat Right no You Got Me Wrong Crowley I didn't you didn't what you just figure it out okay you just figure it out okay you want to St Wallace where's down like a Newsfeed detective you're the one that's going to get worn down come on Jerry don't Jive me I work narcotics okay all right so you know what it's like sure I do I
know about unregistered informance I know how you feed them a little so they feed you a little back I can even appreciate getting personally involved with one if she was as beautiful as Marie was there's no regulation against it but there is a regulation says you know a homicide victim you report it why didn't you report it Jerry why you feeling abused Jerry you want a lawyer you want us to make this official cuz the minute you say you want an official you got it buddy you got it file and false
time sheets taking unauthorized leave ripping off mined dealers using their dope to pay off informance what else come on Jerry that's nothing we want the big stuff I told you you told us Z what do you want from me what what do we want yeah you tell us all you want me all we want is what you want me to confess confess to what come on Jerry spit it out you want me to say that I killed her did you no you didn't no did we ever ask you if you killed her well well I didn't do it you didn't do what I
didn't do it didn't do what I didn't kill her sure like to believe you Jerry but you make it real tough pal I loved her you bastards I loved [Music] [Music] her [Music] 9 hours I don't believe it I don't think he did it what do you see something we don't maybe Fred and I are too close in there what do you see Frank it's more like what I don't see I don't see the anger it's always a skitso he forgot he whacked her the guy's holding back yeah I know but what you think I like this working over anot
her cup cley likes it not me I didn't pick ID they put me here but still I want to do the job right you were crazy about it weren't you yeah yeah you want to uh tell me about it it doesn't make any sense never does she was from this very classy family and when they found out that she was taking dope they cut her off and that's when she started turning tricks and you both really like that didn't you like what hitting bottom yeah that's right what was she like I don't know uh she was wounded someh
ow and that attracted you yeah we were both pretty much the same way I'm a good cop jenck but I'm not tough I feel sorry for everybody any what kind of cop does that so who killed you Jerry I swear to you I don't [Music] know so this Vietnamese detective he still remembers yeah he even a witness to the body being dumped in the [Music] river take a [Music] look I don't know Jerry maybe it's time to take a poly graph that's what I'd do if it was me of course I didn't kill anybody I didn't needan i
t well convince me of that you're out of here so far I haven't been convinced all right I'll take the polygraph do you work for the New York City Police Department yes before 1987 did you ever do any criminal act no did you tie up Marie Evans no are you responsible for the death of Marie Evans no a lot of agitation here here too about Marie still when I ask if he killed her I asked him six times is denials consistent is he telling the truth well as you know Lieutenant the test has limited validi
ty so so I'm afraid here the readings are inconclusive yeah yeah aren't they always if you can fool yourself you can fool the polygraph look we know he was involved with Marie Evans he was an MP you saw him react to the witness Glory that's another thing why Quinn Quinn there's nothing wrong with him Frank he could be one of us an obsessed cop with an un solvable case yeah could be you're saying what suppose Quinn knows more than he's told us suppose he got his list of MPS he narrowed it down to
Jerry renl okay so now he's here but the obsession goes on he keeps tying that knot yeah and then one night he gets this idea since he can't nail rent fruit for the old case he'll create a new case exactly the same he's an ex cop he'd know how to do that and when Boyce can't connect Jerry and Marie Quinn writes the letter to woff why Frank kind of hard to believe he'd whack some gal just to make a frame we' both seen good cops get twisted around look I'm not saying that Quinn's trying to frame
run through I don't know there's something about the guy all that Obsession why Aaron why that's the name of the game what are we doing here he wants some what we're doing here Mario what we're doing here is we're going to give you a little test Sally boy you pass and you go on to the next Square you fail and uh what's a test go into 172 bring apartment 2C tell them the brothers sent you the brothers ask Mrs Valdez she'll give you a bag you bring it back out your us and that's it you think you c
an handle it what are you waiting for [Music] the brothers sent [Music] me you from the brothers yeah you Mrs Valdez that's me come on in handsome so you're the new bagman Mario told me about you [Music] bman [Music] here it is honey take it I mean here's the take so take it gorgeous you heard her take it gorgeous I said take it now POS with it yeah that's it pretty for the picture okay let's go you passed the test I can't wear a war cuz I got nothing on them but they got something big on me if
we do this thing and it goes to trial their attorney's going to wave that photo of me and I'm going to look like a crook what we're going to do we're going to go to White go we're going to tell him everything that way you'll be protected okay okay but I still got a problem what I don't know the whole thing it just maybe we ought to call it off call off this thing after what they've done to me Frank no way sad you're getting too wrapped up with them the hook is in Frank come on the the plan is re
ady to go all right so tell me the main drug source is this family uh Colombians they all live together in the same house women children grandparents they want us to hit the house listen on collection days there's a lot of money laying there overnight how much 6 700 Grand Place want to be guarded like Fort Knox now Mario says that he and Tony can draw them off and all we got to do is go and scoop up the money what about the women he says kill them and the children he said kill them too and if we
ain't got the stomach for it we should blindfold them yeah well the point is Frank to make it look like they was hit by a rival family then the families go to war against each other and we just sit back and count the cash is that it what do you think all sounds pretty crude well like Mario keeps telling me it's all in the details is it all talk or what no Frank they'll do it I passed their stinking test now we just reel them in it's all we got to do all right we'll take it one more step but I'm
bringing dve to cover your back so from now on whenever you talk to those guys he's going to be behind you you understand yeah Quinn checks out the perfect immigrant big success the American dream nobody's perfect yeah well there is one thing doesn't necessarily apply to quinnn but makes for an interesting concept what's that seems the Vietnamese have this saying man of a 100 deceptions and a th000 plots part of their concept that's known as the 100-year Ambush what that means is you set things
up so that years later you trapped a strong where'd you get that huh leave you the me speaking cop in the department you new undercover officer if you approve Molly you look terrific out there Molly I'd like you to meet liutenant Frank Janik Frank meet Molly Tron pleasure Molly nice to meeting you nice meeting you Quinn needs a new Hostess for his restaurant his daughter's going off to college and I was thinking well maybe we could put Molly in my uncle owns a Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle I

me it's the case you that's the challenge but this one's got me I mean I've been riding s about the way he's hung up on the grelis now I guess I'm getting hung up on this one in what way I don't know everything's so damn coincidental two murders years apart the same ammo I don't know could it be the same killer huh could be could be the same killer acting out a ritual as if the rest of the world is going on about his business and he's locked in place do you think it's renr renre is mixed up in i

r me especially when I'm dressed up no I I can take it or leave it myself I like it here very much the heat reminds me of Saigon no offense Madam Ben but we didn't come here to discuss the weather yes I know you came to talk about murder yes I believe it was this one we knew him as the major an intelligence officer as I recall most Charming gentleman but uh at times liable to get carried away I always thought he was the one why him I had my reasons uh what reasons often he would overstep this ma
jor who was he we didn't ask names Lieutenant we didn't know names names were not the point not the point Madam Ben bakt worked for you didn't she sometimes yes and you brokered her last Arrangement didn't you as a matter of fact I did I'm late for my golf lesson you must excuse me gentlemen just one more question please if you know it was this major why didn't you report him this was Vietnam lant to come forward to report this is not good business but as you can see now I am being very Frank ac
cording to my book Lieutenant this gentleman the measure still owes ye a great deal of money since it's clear after all this time he has no intention of paying I feel no further obligation to remain discreet I tell you one thing maybe it will help you the major he like to interrogate the girls I wonder what her handicap is nice skin looks expensive nice and smooth like Miss johanna's face now listen very carefully we're messenger see so here's the message your boss he blabs this could happened t
o her pretty face or maybe the face of someone close near and dear be sure I tell her that [Music] comp guy like to interrogate it's not enough Frank how do you find a guy like that we're going to have to run another computer search before we were looking for xmp's now it's an intelligence officer at least we know his rank wasn't refr station some kind of a detention center for captured enemy officers well if they kept enemy officers there they must have interrogated them sure an off- based Ren
could have said he was a major so what are you saying Frank we back with renre maybe maybe not I'd like to find find out he won't tell you nothing Frank not Jerry Renfro I think he will Aaron if I ask him [Music] right how about that name check Frank the lady's clean nobody's watching her not officially anyway no thanks Jim what about the Loft full of prints building employees most L but there was one thumb print I couldn't match on a styrofoam coffee cup hey Frank remember that discussion we ha

lvement yeah maybe that's it well you know what I think I think you're worried about me you think I'm pushing too hard on this grelli thing you're afraid something's going to go wrong that's it isn't it how did you know that when you asked me not to talk about it that was the tip off I've heard that before every cop has heard that before it's what we call cops wife syndrome oh of course I'm not saying that you're like a wife but you understand what I mean huh yeah I just don't want anything to h

hreaten you again you tell them I'm going straight to janic you make them understand no matter what what it cost that's what I'm going to do no don't do that it'll be okay just don't do anything all right I'll take care of it well I know her she says she's out she's really [Music] out ch ick the major Jerry tell me about the major interrogator Relentless he got to like it didn't he wearing people down watching them squirm scream does matter Jer you haven't you got anything to say what's going to
happen to me no promises not till I've heard at all if you're clean you help me nail him probably be okay what about that girl in Saigon that's not our case but if you're implicated in Marie Evans homicide even a little bit we'll have to see how I feel about that what happened to Marie was my [Music] fault well why don't we start at the beginning back in Saigon you were a lowly Corporal and he was a major so how did you two meet there was a compound near the Airfield where the prisoners were in
terrogated sometimes at night a chopper would land they' bring in a new prisoner with a bag over his head there was an office and a Barracks where the MP guards lived and close by at the detention center with the major question the prisoners we didn't know what went on in there rumor was that they kept the prisoners in freezing cells it made me nervous living close to it trouble getting to sleep you couldn't hear anything but you knew what was going on you knew that people were being hurt me and
another guy were playing ball and we noticed the major come out of the detention building to talk to our Co now next thing the co orders us to form a detail and then he turns us over to the major later when it was dark the major took us into the detention building it was cold in there I started to shiver right away there were these Gos in the interrogation room and as soon as they saw us they got up out of our [Music] way I took one look I wanted to puke the major makes says carry the dead pris
oner [Music] out we H him back down the corridor and then loaded him into this meat wagon they kept around the back blood all over us I stood in the shower just scrubbing away I still felt dirty I just couldn't seem to get it all that night again I couldn't sleep that was your first contact with him was the first time we actually spoke so one night I'm in this bar outside the base minding my own business smoking a joint and who walks in but major [Music] C I was scared when MP smoking grass he c
ould put me on report but then he sits down right next to me he puts out his hand like he wants a hit it was weird he didn't say a word but I felt I don't know like he had this hold over me and when he left he said Corporal you owe me one what did he mean uh a couple of weeks later I found out it was night hotter than hell you could hear the MERS the VC were closing in and I'm trying to sleep when I feel someone standing over my bunk get up Soldier again he led me into the detention building thi
s time there wasn't anybody else around and this time it was a girl who was dead the story was she was a VC agent that one of his Vietnamese interrogators got carried away we got to get rid of her he says the war's almost over and we don't want to be connected to something like this he'd had a car brought around we put the dead girl in the trunk and he told me to get into my uniform he was a major I was a Corporal so I did like I was [Music] [Music] told toy turn [Music] he said no one would sto
p me I was in uniform and an official car he was right he told me to drive down to The Saigon River and turn into one of those dirt tracks and dumper there [Music] I did what he said of course I didn't know some kid was watching hiding in those reads I dumped her I drove back and he swore me to secrecy that was it yeah the next couple of weeks were pretty frantic they were taking up with the evacuation yeah what about major C I never saw him again they closed the Detention Center the rumor was t
hat they took the prisoners up in the plane and they threw him out you were evacuated yeah a couple of months later I got my discharge the only thing I knew was law enforcement so I applied to NYPD but you did see him again didn't you Jerry I heard about him from Marie one day she was telling me about this client of hers they'd like to tie her up in this special way and then ask her all these intimate questions oh it's just play she says guy doesn't really hurt her but he wants her to pretend th
at she's being hurt he tape records their sessions he takes pictures oh [Music] there's something weird about him she said something that scares [Music] her so I ask her why don't you just dump the guy she says no she can handle him she says she needs him that's something for you pot smack Coke he's got it all the guy's like a total pharmacist so you know I'm interested sounds like the kind of guy I'd like to bust but she won't tell me his name she says who who's going to supply her if I put him
away and I going to take up the slack I pretend to let it go and then one night when I knew that they had a date I trailed along I followed them over to the 79th Street Boat Basin and I watched him board a boat major se's boat yeah Ma se's I couldn't believe it and then I put it all together that girl in Saigon she was tied up exactly the way that Marie had described she wasn't killed by some by some incompetent interrogator the major killed her and then he had me help him clean up his mess tha
t make you mad Jerry oh you're damn right Canfield was a killer Canfield yeah major Ross L Canfield the number three guy in the New York Drug Enforcement Administration he's a crooked cop he's he's dealing drugs and now he's messing with my girl and I was ready to kill and that similarity is reflected in how we do our work you people have come here this afternoon to hear somebody tell you something there was an arc division briefing I don't usually go to these things but I heard that Canfield wa
s going to speak and while you're here is to discuss the relationship so I go and I'm sitting there and I'm listening and I'm staring right at the guy and he looked straight through me behind he didn't know who I was similarities in the structure of both organizations seemed like there was two ways to go I could bust him with all that dope and use Marie as a witness but who would take the word of some hooker junkie against a some hot shot from the DEA what's the other way those pictures and tape
s I figured that if I could get my hands on those I'd be in a position to do can feel some real damage blackmailing yeah yeah something like that saying so you convinced Marie to go along yeah I told her that if I had those pictures I could force Canfield to give her everything that he had you know I I I keep going over it in my head I you know maybe she was nervous and he picked up on it maybe he caught her snatching the photographs and killed her outright or maybe he just got carried away like
he did with that girl in Saigon yeah I thought of that but you couldn't say anything because you were all involved in this blackmail scheme and while you were thinking blackmail your girlfriend got herself killed look I wanted to protect her okay but she wouldn't hear about it she was too strung out you know I thought that if I had the pictures I I I could score for us both but when it went wrong what was I supposed to do I am a good cop janick oh sure yeah I'm just a little sleazy a little cor
rupt maybe but not nearly as bad as Canfield right okay okay arrest me all right I deserve it on the other hand going after those photos that uh that was not such a bad idea what with them and your testimony we just might have enough yeah but this Vietnamese girl I'm still implicated forget that forget that was a long time ago Canfield killed Marie let's get him for it let's nail the son of a [ __ ] so I had to go to this party last night and I was sitting there I had Gian Carlo on the one side
and I had this Japanese cultural ate on the other side and they were both being attentive and Charming but the whole time I was just thinking about how I could get out of there so I could be with you no I don't know about that no it's got to be pretty dull listening me talk about my work all the time no it's it's interesting I go on and on and on I know that Frank I love your stories well the other night you uh using a little Frank I did have a problem and and I wanted to talk to you about it bu
