J Noa: Tiny Desk Concert

This Latinx Heritage Month Tiny Desk is celebrating with an 'El Tiny' takeover, featuring a wide array of artists from all corners of Latinidad. Anamaria Sayre | Septemeber 22, 2023 J Noa buzzes with power. Standing cara a cara with the 17-year-old Dominican rapper, it's clear that spinning life experiences into buttery smooth, striking bars is as natural for her as it is for most of us to take a breath. This Tiny Desk concert was her first time ever leaving her barrio to perform, and yet she transmitted the confidence and charisma of an artist who invokes generations of fuerza into every word she breathes. Setting the tone with "No Me Puedan Parar," she brought captivating energy to the cool anthem. Switching to "Autodidacta," she backed her self-taught narrative with mind-blowing verbal sprints. Gliding through the jazz-backed "Paranoia" to story-driven "Betty," her delivery was so powerful that even the stories she told in between tracks felt like carefully placed poetry. Desde el DR para romper el Tiny Desk. Don't get it twisted — J Noa came to the Tiny Desk to show the world what a girl from her barrio is capable of. Respira, romper — desde DR pa el mundo, the world isn't ready for her. [man] One, two, three, four. [jazz music playing] [J Noa] J Noa, J Noa The daughter of rap From Santo Domingo to [inaudible] El Kartel del Sur Series zero, zero two, represent This is rap or respect, come on Yeah, it goes I don't sing attentive to dread I'm sick of being called the best I'm sure of that, that I even inspire them I am successful, and that is the result of my action Of giving my heart in each of my songs I'm optimistic when you talk about insulting on a track About proving these a
ngry men that I'm a lyricist They ask for war, but they come without bullets There's no one who can resist A rod that leaves you in a coma For as long as you exist What I just rapped, anyone can say that The punchline, the rhymes, they can do what I did But really what makes me so awesome Are things that go way beyond being a singer -[choir] The first thing -[J Noa] Is that I'm only 16 And if I spit 16 at you, they'll bury 16 The second thing, is that being a woman in a man's industry Pay attent
ion to my talent, I'm making my name -[choir] The third thing -I grew up in a low-income On top of that, I have to find time to go to school To class, to study, also for the jobs Behind a dream that has not yet left me any profit -[choir] Fourth -I honestly don't walk behind the fourth, my vision is to put the DR flag At the top, we're going to stop at four Because all of this that I've written, if I keep listing We'll go to infinity Don't you dare compare yourself to me I'm too high, and God is
my witness -That's why -They can't stop me -They can't stop you -They can't stop me They can't stop you Don't you dare compare yourself to me I'm too high, and God is my witness, that's why -They can't stop me -They can't stop you -They can't stop me -They can't stop you I'm not a hitman, but have a machine gun in my two-cords They call you in for a serious reckoning I've been talking shit for a while, insulting you But I already understood how can I say it So you understand Tighten those metal
s, those are like [inaudible] I'm not an accountant, but I have five gretis To back me up Karma believers, you guys are bullies Because your grandfather's got your back I don't change mine when I'm in trouble They're the ones who back me up We don't raid, but the one who comes And lifts my skirt pays it The one I move is because he puso un huevo And we don't have a nest We don't demand money, but if it's from the choir They have to ride it with me No one here consumes prohibited substances Those
who are silent have experienced it I'm looking for money, my clan succeed That's why they're all hurting We go to the right, none of us have been caught Because we do not have a record We're looking for money to put gold in our teeth In the wrong we go, some sailors have made us -Indecent proposals -I don't bend over for money -To get rid of some people -[J Noa] The street teaches you And also cheats on you, that's why we don't snore here We are not from the street, but I know it It loves to fo
ol us Whoever wants to take what's mine Must be a gangster, he has to lay me down Because standing up I'm trouble I won't go in even if they rub me [cheering] [choir] Don't you dare compare yourself to me I'm too high, and God is my witness, that's why -[J Noa] They can't stop me -[choir] They can't stop you -[J Noa] They can't stop me -[choir] They can't stop you [J Noa] Don't you dare compare yourself to me I'm too high, and God is my witness, that's why -They can't stop me -[choir] They can't
stop you -[J Noa] They can't stop me -[choir] They can't stop you [J Noa] Ah! Hey! Hey! Hey! [cheering] [applause] [J Noa laughs] [J Noa] My name is J Noa. I'm 17 years old, and from the Dominican Republic. To the gringos, those primos of mine that are there, they are my primos. [laughter] And I know you guys didn't understand me. My name is J Noa. I'm 17 and I'm from the Dominican Republic. It's my first time leaving my country, out of the ghetto, to succeed in another country, and I am proud
of myself because I left the ghetto to succeed in Tiny Desk. This is challenging, but I'll face it anyway. [cheering] The next song I'm going to sing is called Autodidacta, and it has that name because it's the title track of my EP, which I recently released. And it's also named like that because I'm self-taught. Where I'm from, where I grew up, it's a place where you have to teach yourself, and I am self-taught because what I know I learned on my own. Come on, Yunge, we are ready to go. [woman]
That's right! [Yunge] J Noa, J Noa, J Noa, J Noa J Noa, J Noa [J Noa] Anti-racist self-taught exclusive I make love to the track, son of a bitch Those who put down artists, being a rotten human being What dwells in my mind Smoke an acoustic to get me addicted Inject me with 500 microphones through my lungs Let the sound of the guitar be the water of my kidneys The music is the painkiller for when I get pissed off With these assholes who just eat shit A note of composition is that I do not limit
myself I'm gonna speed up, I'm not Luis Fonsi to go despacito I've got my mind blocked because I've overdone it with melodies You exceed yours with drugs Fucking narcissistic assholes suffering from perfidy Their pantry is always full because they eat pure envy I'm not cold to anyone, nor at a tepid temperature Cause I don't lick things to get a side in the chair I play with their fucking mind as if it were a child's If I feel like it, I take the world And put it in a pocket Solder mask 'cause
you're blinded by my glare -I cut your rhyme in the air -I've got a knife complex I don't have a brake, I'm going to accelerate And it's against the track I always go the other way Because I'm the owner and the guide Brake so I can see how I take away your anomaly Fucking yours, in case you lie about mine I don't stain my name for a lie I'm the most real in my choir -[choir] Of course, it's obvious -Zero females in my choir They don't want me near their boyfriends screws up, RIP, goes to purgato
ry I am quiet but stronger than a shot of tequila I don't take rope, no one can throw my life away Calculate zero plus zero that gives me whatever you say I don't threaten, I teach you in the most passive way And it's a lie? You don't lie down in the face of the extraordinary If I give you the finger, take the finger But don't go overboard and don't be too happy [choir] When I give you your pass Because hell can become your last pass [J Noa] This crazy girl throws rap notes with every punchline
I'll shut your mouth, unpalatable rhymes They seem a Toyota, they are breast children Who eat compote I'm persistent, fast, and frequent Eloquent lexicon, but I'm of mind When I feel like it I use my mind [choir] Too much wall and no bridge [J Noa] I have the talent, give me the admiration Hold the pressure, water for the calentón Control your emotions, I give you a punch Because this is my passion If I look at you, I make you tremble And give you the shivers I've got a bass to Sima It won't go
away from me I live on the stage That I have in my mind, they don't hit a record As long as I'm alive I don't shut up, I don't rehearse, my rhythm is thunderbolts I make you party with the devil and Pablo His last name was Escobar, I don't miss and if I miss It was because it was a dream, they're fine customers At the pawnshop, lots of Cartier But they aren't owners, they want to disprove me So show the stamps I nailed it with Scuf, and now I want another session But with Bizarrap so the Latino
feels the pressure I think big, I already want a massive in Altos de Chavón With the fans of Calle 13 to make a sold-out show I don't have anything, talent is what I'm all about A bunch of record labels called me wanting to sign with me With the talent you're born with And I don't have to beat myself up to let you know That even with gabelas you can't beat me J Noa, J Noa, J Noa J Noa, J Noa, J Noa The fucking daughter of rap Oh, yeah! [cheering] [applause] Now it is true, [inaudible], this chor
us of gringos. [laughter] The next song I'm going to sing is called Paranoia. It's a song with that name because I was at home one day, digging about paranoia. I came to the studio with all that in my head, and I told my manager, hey, look at this, and I told him about paranoia, and at the same time, we're talking about the piano key that doesn't have B sharp. And he says to me, write a song about that, and that's how Paranoia came out. Because what I'm doing is paranormal. Someone who sings in
B sharp has to be crazy because that note doesn't exist. We sing in something out of this world. Let's go, Yu. And here's to you, Paranoia. [Yunge] One, two, three, four. [upbeat music playing] I'm mentally ill, they have no memory of my content Paranoia has me singing in the B sharp Unreal, obsessive, my heart is the ticking of my sound And every head is a world, and my music is not for everyone With one of my bar in a second I wasn't in line, but my turn has come Enough balance for the money I
don't get upset I'm not Natti but I have a criminal flow I'm very versatile I don't copy I'm the original I am the touch, I am the main ingredient I'm the beginning and the end of your whole story Not just anyone can compare to this beast Even if you don't want, I'm representing my flag I'm the 100 bill that's missing from your wallet I'm the fucking bread that's missing from that lunch box -[choir] Not everyone -Has the financial freedom To buy whatever they want whenever and wherever they wan
t -[choir] Not everybody -Has the power of this rapper To stand-up bar by bar, anyone gets desperate -[choir] Not everybody -Has the financial freedom To buy whatever they want Whenever and wherever they want -[choir] Not everybody -Has the power of this rapper -To stand-up bar by bar -[choir] Anybody gets desperate [J Noa] That's why I don't get desperate, my diligence comes first I'm the top performer I made it as a rapper It's too high my speed I've already broken the mileage tracker It is to
o high my capacity because high is what I want Versatile, friendly, I was born with this tactic I wear the same as you, but I look galactic I have enough theme, I don't need to practice My speech doesn't sound like the one of a fucking asthmatic And do not come to measure strength In my house I have a scale That holds more diamonds kilograms than you can hold your belly I'm doing my trick, and I'm not giving you chatter A million horsepower, that's why no one can reach me I don't stop, even thou
gh my style is weird Yours are chopo, mine are expensive My mouth is an AK that releases the shot And you want me to give you a follow I stopped to see if it's true that you play it You've got nothing 'cause of your clone faces I got it like hurricane season, going through work -And no money at all -[choir] Not everybody Has the financial freedom to buy whatever they want Whenever and wherever they want -[choir] Not everybody -Has the power of this rapper -To stand-up bar by bar -[choir] Anybody
gets desperate -[choir] Not everybody -Has the financial freedom To buy whatever they want, whenever and wherever they want -[choir] Not everybody -Has the power of this rapper -To stand-up bar by bar -[choir] Anybody gets desperate I kill them with my punchline I revive it with my double tempo Music is my wife, and that's why I make time for it Making me a name in the concrete jungle I'm sorry if I'm your torment I guess I wasn't meant for this planet But I try to fit in by singing, a real rap
per Throwing punchlines to get your notes up They're looking for me with carte blanche For killing the track I've got a beat that's too much of an apotheosis Extravagant, that's why I can't be copied There is no rapper that can compare with me And if we're talking about flow, mine is from Gucci and beyond I'm automatic when I hear a sound That makes my eardrum tremble My heart pumps lyrics for a tumble While the track tells me it wants to marry me -[choir] Not everybody -Has the financial freedo
m To buy whatever they want whenever and wherever they want Not everybody has the power of this rapper to stand-up bar by bar Anybody gets desperate, not everybody Has the financial freedom to buy whatever they want Whenever and wherever they want Not everybody has the power of this rapper To stand-up bar by bar, anybody gets desperate Tu, tu, tu, tururum Tu, tu, tu, tururum Tu, tu, tu, tururum [applause] [cheering] [J Noa] The next song and the last song I will sing is called Betty. It's a song
where my main focus was the neighborhood because I'm from the neighborhood. I was born, I grew up, I was raised in the neighborhood, I still live there, and I don't know when I'm leaving the neighborhood. It is a song that I wrote inspired by people around me, and as my language is music and art, I decided to make those stories into songs to express to you what is in there that you cannot see. Here's to you, Betty. Let's go ahead. [calm music playing] April 3rd at the central hospital At 12:00
noon, Negra went to give birth She was afraid because the neighbors wished her harm But luckily, Betty was born in good health Time went by, Betty grew up They celebrated her 15th birthday It was not a big party, she was sharing and someone came She was drinking with her friends When Ana arrived and introduced her to Maria It was nothing new because she already knew her Since her father, besides selling it Used to abuse it, she saw that every day José arrived, the one who fucked her and left Now
, he appears with his innocent face He lights a joint and asks her what we're going to do She kicks to show him that she knows how to do it They are stoned, and José calls Ana to have a threesome with Betty, they were at his sister's house But unfortunately, they both got pregnant, and José left as if nothing had happened You are surprised, for me, it's normal [backup singer] That's how we live in the neighborhood [J Noa] The remote that changes the channel is lost [backup singer] That's how we
live in a neighborhood [J Noa] You are surprised, for me, it's normal [backup singer] That's how we live in the neighborhood [J Noa] In the neighborhood Betty is 17, And she's over marijuana, Molly and Tusi is what she's using She leaves the little girl to Negra to take care of her Betty goes to the street, and nobody stops her Lots of style, a piquete perrísimo, a trio of chukinuni They're out of control She gives in because they're good But in the end, she feels a great emptiness She arrived h
ome and found a bunch of people And she was informed that her mother had an accident How life suddenly changes How does a mother who was absent takes responsibility? [backup singer] That's how we live in a neighborhood [J Noa] You may be surprised, for me it's normal [backup singer] That's how we live in the neighborhood [J Noa] The remote that changes the channel is lost [backup singer] That's how we live in the neighborhood [J Noa] You are surprised, for me it's normal [backup singer] That's h
ow we live in the neighborhood [J Noa] In the neighborhood To have friendships, you don't have to show off To have a good time, you don't have to consume You're not too late to be a tender child You don't have to open your legs to just anyone Maybe this story doesn't have a happy ending But I'd like it to have a real ending What happened to Betty can happen to you I just hope your choices aren't the same Ah, J Noa, J Noa The daughter of rap! Thank you very much, Tiny Desk. Thank you so much, my
audience, we're here for you guys. My primos. J Noa, J Noa J Noa, J Noa J Noa, J Noa J Noa, J Noa [cheering] [applause]

@Mrcrisu8

One of the most powerful performances I've seen on tiny desk for a while. She's a beast an a half and I can't wait to see her growth.

@maggiedonaldson8432

I love Tiny Desk! As a 60 year old white British woman, I wouldn’t usually be exposed to artists like this, but you keep pushing my musical horizons. I don’t speak Spanish, but the delivery, cadence and passion here here is compelling! And for a 17 year old? Amazing! Love it. Superb backing too from a tight group of musicians with funk!

@valeryamusica

@elperroleal
