‘Just astonishing’: Lawrence on Biden’s direct attacks on Trump and SCOTUS | State of the Union

Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell react to President Biden’s State of the Union address, his multiple references to Donald Trump, and his willingness to attack the Supreme Court. “There’s so many things in this speech that we have never seen before in a State of the Union address. One of them was the 13 times he referred to the candidate he’s going to be running against for president. That’s normally impossible to do... It was extraordinary.” » Subscribe to MSNBC: https://www.youtube.com/msnbc Follow MSNBC Show Blogs MaddowBlog: https://www.msnbc.com/maddowblog ReidOut Blog: https://www.msnbc.com/reidoutblog MSNBC delivers breaking news, in-depth analysis of politics headlines, as well as commentary and informed perspectives. I think that at least my first impression was that it was an incredibly pugnacious speech where he came out with both proverbial barrels blazing right at the top um talking about democracy being threatened at home and abroad talking about needing to stand up for Ukraine talking about needing to never let lies take over the truth when it comes to what happened on January 6th and the threat to our own democracy uh talking about Reproductive Rights very very early on um really not shying away from
talking about the former president he kept calling my predecessor who of course is his opponent in the general election campaign this year um a lot of policy like you always get from presidents in the State of the Union that was sort of the uh maybe the the second third of the speech but that whole first third and then a rip roaring finish um he was yelled at a few different times there was some outbursts from Republicans I don't think any of that will be substantively memorable I think the what
will be memorable about those outbursts was the president handling them seeming energized by them and sort of almost looking forward to them laoren o' Donnell um what are your impressions you know it's there's so many things in this speech that we've never seen before in the State of the Union Address uh one of them is the 13 times he referred to the candidate he's going to be running against for president that's normally impossible to do in the State of the Union Address but this time when you
get to say my predecessor that makes it a presidential issue that that now you are comparing your governing to what came before you and what you're correcting and he said my predecessor 13 times beginning very early on every single subject it was extraordinary and and there was at that moment that I think we all remember of the way he attacked I guess is the word for it the Supreme Court to their faces uh where the camera then goes to this shot of the six Supreme Court Justice three of whom he
was very specifically attacking uh that's never been done before to to to the extent that a president has a disagreement with the Supreme Court expressed in the State of the Union Address they always try to find the most polite possible language for doing that this was not the night for that uh so that that was just astonishing and this enthusiasm that you're seeing after the fact uh by my reading is real because the thing that isn't really known about this and it doesn't seem obvious is it's a
tough crowd if you've actually sat in the among the Senators and house members as I have many times when I was working there the general feeling is boredom it is very very hard to ignite them to capture them and he had them every step of the way in an in an very well- written speech that really flowed uh in a very smooth way uh was everything they wanted to hear had surprises in it had an energy level that I think uh was I mean listen I've never brought that much energy to the 10 p.m. hour I'm j
ust tell and and he lifted that crowd the Democratic crowd really did

@de6212

Republican Sen. James Lankford mouthing "it's true" when Biden spoke about the border bill was a highlight.

@nornradd

Watched it live with 30,000+ ppl on MTN. Obviously a biased audience, but I really was dreading the speech, I remain incredibly angry ad upset about SCOTUS, I'm disgusted with America's politics and justice system, I just wasn't up for it. And it was excellent. Maybe my only complaint is I wish he could be tougher on Israel. But I know those politics are incredibly complicated and would involve our whole Middle East policy.

@geraldfer

@catwilliamson3887

Did you notice which Supreme Justices were missing?

@rjunehwb

Did anybody notice the smile on Bernie Sanders face as he congratulated President Biden? One man told President Biden that he sounded just like a preacher. Many were saying how direct the President was. I'll tell you this, at our age we no longer have the time or the luxury of being circumspect.

@truthhurtswilky7785

As a lifetime conservative, how could you not stand for democracy?

@johnbroker327

Even Mike Johnson had to stand up twice as much as you can see he didn't want to

@Julia4453

The supreme court justices actually lied under oath about Roe during their confirmation hearings. They deserved to be called out on the issue.

Grand slam. Poked at the Supreme Court. Energized with perfect tone and gravitas.

Uncle Joe needed to bring it and he did indeed. Calling out the people who really need calling out was a master stroke.

The display of childish behavior from the queen of Karen’s. MTG was beyond disgusting

@patriciatoomingtheplantpar2558

I don't think he was combative at all, i thought he was matter of fact, and strongly to the point

@mark140363

A well crafted speech, superbly delivered. The discomfort on the supreme court justices' faces was a joy to behold.

@beccagross1525

Let's hope the speech ignigjts the people who didn't vote for anyone to vote for him it was just so firing so bold so direct I love how he directly go after the 3 Supreme Justice members that trump appointed and the camera focused on them when he was speaking and I'm like yes yes yes cause they knew what they did was wrong that speech I think was the most powerful speech he has done the 4 yrs he has been in office he went straight to the point on topics voters wanted to hear about democracy abortion the wars border security and prescription meds prices and other points he never faltered tonight he showed he may be old but he's very cohariant and has the mentality to do his job right awesome speech he made the gop shut up this time it was so awesome
