if you're looking for the cure for spring fever Kansas State University has the perfect spot it's the Kate Gardens they have a couple events for you to enjoy Terry Olsen directs The Run for the Roses 5K and Scott mowan how do you say your last name Scott M Wayne M Wayne I always forget he is the gardens director you can enjoy the flowers and just say your name whenever you feel like it is a beautiful beautiful spot we appreciate you both being here and when you think about the spot why does it l
end itself perfectly Terry to just any event including a jog oh it's just a beautiful campus and U I became involved as a volunteer uh when I joined the board at Kansas State University Gardens and one of the things I proposed was planting massive amount of tulips and so what our first event coming up is our tulip photo op uh we did it for the first time last year so people can come and if they make a $20 voluntary contribution to the gardens they can have their picture taken by one of our talen
ted photographers and they they'll take several shots and then they'll edit them email them to the people and then the people can uh have them printed where they choose and it was wildly popular last year I think we'll have a good turnout this year again and then at the end of the month is going to be the Run for the roses and we'll talk about that in a bit but Scott first of all are the Tulips going to cooperate or is Terry being optimistic here but I think they will I've got in my right so act
ually we have a lot of tulips in bloom already a lot of the plants are looking great right now I mean we're we feel like we're about 2 3 weeks uh early um and it's it all depends on the weather but things are looking great in the gardens right now they're free and open to the public seven days a week so anybody can come at any time and check them out for those who haven't been how many different varieties of plants and how exactly does the season unfold for you um well we've got a wide mixture o
f Woody ornamentals uh once the Tulips are done we'll be pulling those tulips out of the beds um matter of fact we'll have a sale uh May 3rd on and we get those beds ready to go for annual displays and students grow those annual flowers so we'll we'll have over uh 7 or 8,000 annuals that'll go in those beds you mentioned students how is this kind of like a learning laboratory I mean Kate's known for its various Horticulture agriculture programs that's right that's exactly what it is it's an outd
oor living learning laboratory and uh students as well as the public can come in at any time and and study the plants or just enjoy the scenery so it's a it's a great it's a Serene place um you know we've we've got a lot of regulars that are coming in checking it out on a daily basis and so it's it's a great place to have right on campus right in Manhattan do you share your knowledge as well because I could use some help in bu yeah yeah uh information is free as well as the admission and parking
so uh we're out there uh helping people out if they're if they're there visiting and having questions and we don't follow a route that will trample the flowers how does the Run for the Roses go and what does it benefit well uh if they go to the event page for uh at Kansas State Gardens uh there is a link for the route that they can see where it's going to go but it goes by all the uh favorite landmarks on campus like the Student Union and Anderson Hall it takes a lap inside the old football sta
dium over by a Hearn and then it comes back to the gardens it's a beautiful course and we have photographers station so that you're going to get yourself photographed at least four times if you're running the route sometimes that's not so good news depending how you're feeling during the 5K but there also is a one M stroll people can take if they don't want to run a full 5K true and you can walk the 5K if you want to do it so you have your choice of distances and you can run or you can walk eith
er one and you're wearing a metal but because this is the gardens that's your trophy yes the top three finishers in and they're just fiveyear increments so we have a lot of winners the top three winners get that for a trophy and everybody gets a medal everybody gets a t-shirt it's just a fun event we'll have Kate pep band there the twirl team Frank TR uh the band director is one of our uh celebrity Runners this year it's just a lot is our friend Marvin hackmeister going to make it he's one of ou
