His observers were representatives of the United States. This congress bore its fruits very quickly. In May 1949, 10 European countries signed a treaty in London establishing a new body called the Council of Europe with its seat in Strasbourg. In April 1951, France and the Federal Republic of Germany, established

under the aegis of the Western Allies, proclaimed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community. The next step towards European integration was the Treaty of Rome signed in 1957, which established the European Economic Community. 35 years later, in 1992 in Maastricht, the Netherlands, its members established the European Union.
