well the snow came down all over the Front Range this morning this the scene in Boulder while coloradans were being greeted with the flurry of flakes heading south the snow and wind a little less intense but still present down in Greenwood Village about a couple of inches fell there our viewer Jr saw this at the parking lot at Home Depot today right outside the 9 News Studios it was more of the same spear Boulevard was slick when all that snow was sticking to the roads and drivers dealt with its
first snow squall warning but now look at this sunny we got one icicle hang the camera one icicle hanging on uh sunny outside the roads are clear uh change quickly cold weather though so that icicle may be sticking around for a little bit but that was a very interesting morning many people getting a a wide variety of weather in a short period of time and we talked about this yesterday but if folks really weren't tuned in or weren't paying attention you know and thought Oh it's just going to be
snow they weren't aware we mentioned this was going to hit during the morning drive be done before the evening drive it's going to be a quick burst of snow with a quick inch or two now the snow squall warning I did not anticipate they would do that but that was a good call by National Weather Service because this line of snow and wind was certainly impactful for drivers today driving in I saw still a lot of cars off the road and a lot of car accidents people unprepared for this winter weather an
d is quickly as it came in it has moved out now there's still a little bit of a wind that's coming in out of the North and Northwest over the northern mountains and Front Range Foothills so the temperature has a little bit of an edge to it not a ton of snow as we mentioned it would be a quick one or two Ines but wow when it comes in 20 minutes with winds like that and you get the white out conditions you really can't drive it's really tough to do anything outdoors and of course it can be increas
ingly dangerous as that system kind of gains strength and drops South across the plains like it did today we're still at 28 degrees in Denver we topped out at 44 early this morning and when that front came through you knew it was here because the the winds were roaring shifting out of the West coming in out of the North we're still dealing with some Gusty winds along that Wyoming border and down over Southern Colorado where that high wind warning remains in effect for a Time longer but the heavi
er snow showers have dropped South and we're still looking at snow squall warnings along this line outside of Pueblo and into Lamar but Denver you're done with the snow now we're going to be talking about the cold but if you are headed to the High Country we're not done with the winter weather and travel advisories there so a lot to talk about in weather in just a bit thanks Kathy we'll talk to you soon the city of Denver is activating warming shelters tonight with low temperatures expected McNi
chols Civic Center building will be open until 6:00 p.m. tonight through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow the city says people experiencing homelessness should just walk up to that location directly over at DIA things have calmed down after the snow and the wind led to just a slew of delays this morning still a bit of a misery situation on the misery map more than 600 flights were delayed today all that windy snow came to the metro area courtesy of what we are calling a snow squall yeah it was interesting tod
ay walking around seeing people with those puzzled faces the quizzical look saying's a what in the world is a snow squall well lucky for you our meteorologist Chris bian is also a snow squal list and uh sist yeah he is a snow squal olist and he's joining us now to tell us more about this uh unique event I hope I can see that below snow squall olist crisy I hope that's that's written right below me hope our producer Jack got you that on it though ah bummer well uh what's crazy Tomy you mentioned
how this morning there were a lot of puzzled looks about the snow Squad right but what's also wild is that snow has basically already melted for us and that came with that snow squall that moved through just like this first thing he woke up this morning it was actually sunny outside we were in the mid-40s as Kathy was talking about but then then now we got that snow squall that moved this way on through and with like kind of the snap of the finger everything changed and that led to the first eve
r snow squall warning ever issued for the city of Denver a snow squall is basically a mini blizard and it makes travel really difficult it often means there's A4 mile or less visibility with heavy snow but it lasts less than an hour so kind of think of it like a snow thunderstorm in a matter of minutes if not seconds metro area went from a cloudy windy morning to what looked like a full-fledged blizzard that was thanks to a fast moving snow squall that dumped up to 2 in of snow in the metro area
in less than an hour near White out conditions are a Hallmark of a snow squall and that's exactly what many of you saw this morning right during the heart of the morning rush and it wasn't just the snow the wind gusted up to 58 mph just after 7:00 this morning at Denver International Airport and that that created massive headaches at the airport all morning long and uh Tom K one thing kind of leave you with here is I mentioned how this was the first ever snow squall warning issued for the city
of Denver uh that's not because we haven't had snow squalls before we're going to see them again the National Weather Service only started issuing snow squ warnings about 5 years ago a little less than 5 years ago in the winter of 2019 20120 it's just the first time here in the city of Denver that we've had one so if that explains why you might not have heard that ter before hopefully that explains it now uh some of us who lived in on coastal areas we're used to the term Squall not necessarily w
ith snow but with those those severe sudden storms but uh the snow adds a different bit of it and we appreciated you getting rid of it a kind of a snow squal ectomy by our snow squal list and that's that's a Hallmark of Denver as well isn't it yeah oh nothing sticks around too long is that done with anesthesia no not needed okay just a local uh uh Chris thank you very much we appreciate it okay now despite all the snow there are still fires that are burning down near Colorado Springs like the on
e at the Air Force Academy they say that fire was 75% contained as of about 11: this morning though the area has now moved out of Red Flag Warning territory as well over at Fort Carson one of the fires now listed as 100% contained that one burned about 700 Acres but there's also a bigger one that's burned some 2700 Acres there at the Fort that one is listed as 75% contained Denver Police say they have recovered three bronze artwork stolen from The Martin Luther King Jr monument in City Park poli
ce say these pieces along with seven pieces from the Jo Joseph Addison Thatcher Memorial Fountain were sold as scrap metal to a local business police say the thieves cut one large plaque into four pieces investigators recovered the items returned them to Denver arts and venues they believe the theft happened between 3:30 and 5:30 a.m. on Sunday February 18th they've identif ified one suspect and they're looking for this man who they say is the second suspect anyone with information can call Crim
Stoppers 720 913 7867 an Aurora police detective sparked the dismissal of a juror who was Latino in the first trial related to Elijah McLean's death that trial went ahead with the jury that was almost all white the decision to remove him from the jury played out behind closed doors and only came to light after a media request to unseal court documents investigate reporter Kevin Bon has the story of The Man known only as juror 14 it's September 20th suspended Aurora police officer Randy rhima an
d former Officer Jason rosenblat arrived for the final day of jury selection in the first trial for First Responders involved in Elijah McLean's death the parties in Council are present 7even hours later the people way uh make their opening statement to the jury that trial over the death of a black man began for an almost all-white jury its final makeup shaped by what happened in a room behind courtroom 402 Colorado Public Radio went to court to get this 86-page transcript unsealed it shows that
attorneys on both sides accus the other of dismissing jurors based on their race much of the focus on one latino man juror 14 he said he'd been stopped multiple times by Aurora Police and thought he was profiled but also that he could be fair and impartial the defense wanted him dismissed prosecutor convinced the judge he should stay and then an undercover Aurora Police investigator said she'd overheard the man on the phone saying three Spanish words Odo la policia I hate the police yes jurors
are not supposed to discuss the case uh but we generally don't have undercover officers where jurors are present and might do so n news legal analyst Scott Robinson was shocked when he read the transcript learning the undercover officer was among prospective jur is waiting for the bathroom when she overheard that call what troubles me is that if you're in there as an undercover officer you really have no business being in a line with jurors um that sounds a little bit like attempting to EAS drop
on conversation in the end the judge dismissed juror 14 and the trial began that afternoon the undercover officer told the judge she was monitoring the trial to gather intelligence on potential protests that was part of an effort to prevent a repeat of 2020 when demonstrators damaged Aurora's municipal courthouse Aurora Police defended her Presence at the courthouse but noted that after a discussion with State Attorney General Phil Weiser they did not conduct similar intelligence gathering at t
he other two trials related to McLean's death oh this is so fascinating we all remember when it just mysteriously everything stopped for a few hours that day remind us what the jury did remember it's three three different trials so this was the very first one that's right so this jury acquitted Jason roseen blat of all charges and they found Randy Rhema guilty of lesser charges of criminally negligent homicide and third degree assault he's now facing a 14mon jail sentence and several years on pr
obation well thank you for all the followup on this one thank you Kevin well Russell Wilson's future as a Denver Broncos certainly has been in limbo for some time even before the team season ended not more than seven weeks ago according to Shawn pton today though the long a answer is coming soon he was at the NFL combine in Indianapolis when coach pton addressed the elephant in the room he says a decision will come within the next two weeks now that they know more about the NFL's cap situation f
or next season and have also scouted quarterbacks both in this year's draft class and as far as free agency as well now our Scotty G and Mike K are in Indianapolis for the NFL combine they'll be joining us in just a bit with more on Payton's remarks that's coming up a little bit later this hour and when he says the decision on Russell Wilson is coming within the next couple weeks he's actually telling us what we already know March 17th is the is the drop dead date and so before March 17th the Br
oncos will make a decision which is a couple of weeks away and with both sides talking only sometimes to other National media sources is that just getting your message out at this point it still seems as though Russell Wilson is the only one who's really trying to get his side of the story out the Broncos staying above above the fry as as much as they can so during the Super Bowl that's always what Johan pyton was being asked about he was being asked about it yeah he just like in most cases just
didn't have much of an answer other than to complement the person on the question first saying it's a good question and then not answering it terrific question let's go on a
