Launching Newton Flight Academy at Glasgow Science Centre

The First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has officially launched Newton Flight Academy at Glasgow Science Centre - and taken a virtual flight around Glasgow in one of its three full motion flight simulators. The state-of-the-art facility, developed in partnership with FIRST Scandinavia, made possible through an investment from Boeing, and supported by University of Strathclyde and Mathworks. It is the first Newton Flight Academy to open in the UK and will work in close partnership with the Science Skills Academy in the Highlands and Islands, which has been operating Newton Rooms since 2019. The permanent classroom used to teach students aviation-related STEM concepts; inspiring engineers and scientists of tomorrow to develop the ideas and technologies that will shape the future of more sustainable aircraft and aviation. [Music] i think this is brilliant for glasgow and scotland the first mutant flight academy in the uk and it is going to be you know so powerful in enthusing young people boys and importantly girls in science and learning about aviation so it's very much a key part of everything we're trying to do about building skills for the future it's part of boeing's partnership with scotland which is very important to us and it's also part of boeing's commitment to growing a new green generation of young pe
ople who see aviation as a challenging sector to work in to help improve our climate while ensuring that we can still connect people globally the flight academy is special in the sense that it's it's a new room designed in an aviation and aerospace context so we still teach concepts in mathematics and physics and science that is in their curriculum but it's in an aviation context in a new flight academy we try to bring in some real-life context into this education that removes the focus from the
traditional very theoretical fundamental concepts in maths and science and physics our role is to inspire the next generation we'll do that through exciting experiences but we also do it by connecting young people to scientists and engineers in industry and academia and we rely on partnerships to do that so the partnerships with boeing maths works and the university of strathclyde is essential the flight academy for me epitomises the grapefruits of collaboration and we're seeing this as a platf
orm for boeing and for scandinavia coming together and making science engineering technology and innovation such an exciting prospect particularly for young people celebrating the big investment boeing has made in the newton academy tonight is a real cause for celebration i think it bodes really really well for opportunities for for young people in scotland and attracting more of them into stem subjects and making them more aware of flowing's activities and some of the benefits they bring to soc
iety and to the economy we're also really delighted to have the scottish first minister opening the newton rooms it's very important it's a sign that boeing is at home in scotland [Applause] [Music]
