(guitar strumming) - [Narrator] "Caitie's Classroom." (upbeat music) Let's go on a field trip with "Caitie's Classroom." (light music) Let's go to a movie theater. (light music continues) - Hi, friends. Today, we're gonna see a movie at a movie theater. Have you been to a movie theater before? A movie theater is a place where you can see a movie on a big screen. It's very exciting. This theater is called the Fox Theatre, and the movie's about to start, so let's get our tickets. (light music cont
inues) Hello. - Hello. - Can I have two tickets to the two o'clock show, please? - Sure, it's $30. - Okay. (light music continues) Here you go. - Thank you, there you go. - Thank you so much. - Enjoy the show. - Thank you. At some places, you might get the tickets inside the theater or maybe even online before you get there, but you need a ticket to see the show. And I got one for you. So let's go. (light music continues) (Caitie laughing) The Fox Theatre is actually a really old movie theater.
It opened in 1914. That's over 100 years ago. And newer movie theaters often have a bunch of movies that you can choose from, and they play them on different screens all at the same time. But this theater only has one room to see the movies, and it's through those doors right there. (light music continues) Oh. But first, let's get some popcorn. Hello. - Hello. What can I get for ya? - May I please have a medium popcorn and a medium orange soda, please? - Sure. - Popcorn is a classic movie theate
r snack. (popcorn whooshing) I sometimes get it when I come to the movies for a special treat. - There's the popcorn. - Thank you. - No problem. (soda whooshing) (light music continues) And there's the soda. - Thank you so much. - No problem. So it's $10, please. - Okay, here you go. - Thank you very much. Enjoy the movie. - Thank you. - Bye. - I'm really excited to show you inside the theater room. Come on. (light music continues) That is the big screen where the movie's gonna play. And look at
all these seats. There's lots of places for people to sit, so lots of people can come and watch the movie at the same time. It's a really neat experience. But there doesn't seem to be anybody here today, so I think we could take a walk around and get a closer look. (light music continues) Whoa, bit of a different view from down here. This theater has 248 seats. That's a lot of people that can be watching the movie. And up there is the projector room. That's where the movie's played, and the pro
jector shines it down onto the screen so we can watch it. Hey, look at this. (light music continues) It's a piano. (piano sounding) (Caitie laughing) Can you guess why there might be a piano in an old theater like this? (light music continues) Well, back when movies were first being shown in theaters in the early 1900s, they didn't have sound. They didn't have color either. They were in black and white, and musicians would play instruments, like the piano, while the movie played on the screen. T
hat's the way things were done back in 1914. We better find our seat for the movie. Come on. (light music continues) It's really important that we're quiet once we're in the movie theater, 'cause we want everyone to be able to enjoy the movie. So once we find our seat, we get comfy and we get quiet. Shh. The movie's gonna start soon. - [Crystal] Hey, Caitie? - Uh oh, that doesn't sound like a very quiet voice. - Caitie, up here. - Oh. Hello. - Before I start the movie, I thought you might like t
o see how the projector works. (light music continues) - That would be amazing, okay. - Come on up and I'll show you. - This doesn't usually happen. I've never seen inside the projector room before. But let's go. (laughing) (light music continues) Wow. Hi. - Hi, Caitie, I'm Crystal. I'm the general manager here at the Fox Theatre. - Hi, Crystal. It's really nice to meet you. - Thanks for coming. - Wow. (light music continues) What's that? - That's our projector. That's what we use to show the mo
vies on the big screen out there. - Wow, the projector is really big. It's really neat to see inside this room. I've never been in a projecting room before. It's really cool to see behind the scenes. It's really warm in here too. (laughing) - Yeah, the lights in the projector get pretty hot, so it heats up the room especially in summer. - Oh yeah, I bet. So the projector uses its bright lights, and it shines down through the window onto the screen. And that's how we can see the movie from down t
here. - That's right. - Wow. And what's that at the front of the projector? - That's the 3D lens. So if we wanna watch a 3D movie, we just push the lens in front of the projector and then we watch the movie in 3D. - That's very fancy. So things have changed a lot since 1914. - They sure have. Movies used to come in giant containers like that. - Whoa. (light music continues) May I? - Sure. - Ugh, that is really heavy. (laughing) So how do they come now? - Now they come in a little box like this.
- Wow, that is a lot smaller. - A lot smaller. It's just a hard drive, and we put it into the machine and we watch the movies from there. - So is there a button that you have to press to make it play? - No, everything's automatic now. So we just put our schedule in, and the machine takes care of turning down the lights and starting the movie. - Wow, so everything's ready to go. - It is, and we've got a really great movie starting right now. I think you're gonna like it. - Yes, I am very excited
to see this movie. Thank you so much for showing us this. - No problem, thank you for coming to the movies here. - Of course. Well, we better go find our seats. Bye, Crystal. - Bye. (light music) - Shh, the movie's starting. - "Camping with Tobee." (playful music) (water sloshing) (gentle music) - Caitie, this is so fun. (laughing) (Caitie laughing) - There's a woodpecker. - Ah. (birds chirping) Oh yeah, cool. (laughing) - [Caitie] There's a bluebird. (soda sloshing) - Ah, did you see that? - Oh
, a shooting star. That's really special. - Yeah. - Wow. - Wow. (gentle music) I hope the owls will come out soon. (Caitie laughing) (gentle music continues) (owl hooting) (chimes ringing) (gentle music) - Oh yay. (laughing) That was so great. There's really nothing like going to see a movie on the big screen. But the lights are back on now, so it's time to get going. Make sure that you have everything that you brought with you and don't forget your garbage. We can throw that out on our way out.
(bag crinkling) (gentle music continues) (trash thumping) Well, thanks for coming to the movies with me. It was really special to get to see inside the projector room and to see "Tobee Goes Camping" on the big screen, wasn't it? I had a lotta fun. I hope you did too. I'll see you again soon. (gentle music continues) - (laughing) Oh, you're still here. The movie's over. I hope you liked it, but now, it's time to go home. (laughing) Bye bye. (light music) Whoo.
