well high school students are empowering the community Through generosity our kids representing multiple school districts donating 18 thousand dollars to local nonprofits 13 action news reporter Sophie Bates tells us about the program bringing the students together that program is a leadership Toledo initiative called yippee it stands for youth in philanthropy encouraging Excellence it's a free program that's open to all area high school juniors and seniors eighteen thousand dollars split amongs
t 13 youth-centered non-profits all raised and donated by a group of Tenacious teenagers there's so many people that like need the help that these non-profits are giving and it's really nice to be able to give back to my community and help some of these kids have opportunities that I had they didn't yippee students spend an entire year fundraising and interviewing non-profits we go through a grant making process in this in the summer we request proposals from local youth serving organizations an
d then the students determine their group values what is it that they care about what do they think is impacting youth currently in our community Jen across Lutheran Services is one of the non-profit students chose to receive a two thousand dollar Grant we currently run six youth group homes and the grant that we receive today is going to be funding a playhouse at one of those youth group homes Beyond raising money program director Nicole sustorf says it's about teaching students skills they won
't get in school I learned so much about how to like communicate with people and how to work with the group by calling people on the phone and asking for donations and doing fundraisers if you're interested in getting involved with yippee all you have to do is go online and email the program at director we'll have a link to that on our website reporting in Toledo Sophie Bates 13 Action News
