Lucio Fulci's Manhattan Baby (1982) Discussion/Review: Horror After Dark Podcast Ep.5 #fulci #1982

Lucio Fulci's Manhattan Baby (1982) Discussion/Review! Some more Italian Horror. __________________________________ Let's discuss Italian Horror director Lucio Fulci's pretty underrated curse/possession tale, Manhattan Baby for this episode! The movie follows an archaeologist who brings a mysterious artifact, a golden amulet, back to New York from an excavation in Egypt. Shortly after, his daughter becomes possessed by an evil force that seems to be linked to the amulet. With the help of a psychic, the family tries to unravel the secrets of the amulet and the entity possessing their daughter, leading them on a terrifying journey through the dark corners of New York City. The film is known for its surreal and gory imagery, as well as its dreamlike atmosphere. At a time when Dario Argento had Tenebrae, John Carpenter had the greatest film ever made, The Thing. We no longer really had a Mario Bava anymore, but luckily, son Lamberto Bava. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the Channel: Hi, I'm JT, a horror fanatic for almost 30 years. hello the boys and girls welcome to the horror  after dark podcast in this Aqua GT episode five and we're going to be talking tonight about Lucio  full cheese and Manhattan baby from 1982 is when is where most places are saying so in I'm pretty  sure it was released in Italy in in 82 and then 84. it says on shutter and I'm pretty sure in  the states it was released in 84. so I'm gonna go with 82 so 82 Manhattan baby now this is a very  divisive faulty film among faulty fans like this is a uh it
gets it gets uh doesn't get this much  praise as it should even though it it shouldn't get too much praise it's nowhere near as good as  his you know Gates of Hell Trilogy and zombie and um New York Ripper it's more like  middle of the road faulty but it's fun it's a fun one like in this with Enigma  was his his little take on carry kind of and if uh house by the cemetery it says it'll take on  The Shining that Manhattan maybe is his little take on the exorcists pretty much and we basically  hav
e this archaeologist whose family goes to Egypt and their daughter gets a Talisman from a Gypsy  Woman a blind woman and things start happening when they get back home and uh leads to shuddering  circumstances but um one great thing is we have Bob from house house by the cemetery in here as  uh uh what's his name Philip I want to say maybe I'm probably totally wrong on that but I like  this kid oh I I do remember that his voice isn't as unbearable as it is in house by the  cemetery so that's a p
lus but it's still with that punchable face man like what are you gonna  do but uh all right so let's talk Manhattan baby from 1982 very underrated faulty film like it  really is I really uh enjoy watching Manhattan baby like it's one of those movies that if I  don't want to throw on faulty like it's Gothic like era movies they gave the hell trilogies  zombie Etc and I don't want to go too far out there to like obscure faulty films but something  like in the middle like I throw on like this or E
nigma or um murder Rock that's like the type of  uh class of faulty category that this belongs to now first of all I love ancient Egypt I've always  loved like reading and watching uh you know videos documentaries on ancient Egyptian culture and  stuff like that I even have an Egyptian ankh with the uh Eye of Horus tattooed I'm like right uh  rib cage I love Egyptian stuff so just the whole fact that just opens up in Egypt and the family  is uh there and it's uh husband and wife and the daughter
and younger son and Susie is the daughter  and I there's some great Eerie shots in this movie like and there's some creative shots in this movie  too I like when uh Susie and her mom are hanging out in Chiefs uh picks up some sand and then  she's letting it run through her fingers and then you see like a close-up of it and it looks  like quicksand kind of like the sand pouring through it's it's an inventive shot like I like  that and then she asked if she's okay to Susie the the little girl and
um you know she's like 11 12  ish probably she's not little girl but ask her if she's okay she says no some real beautiful shots  too in this opening with uh Susie and her mom walking around uh wherever this is in Egypt and  it has like a very like mystical atmosphere to it now the score fucking fantastic just like so  many faulty scores I'm pretty damn sure this is uh Fabio fritzi Falls all right like I'm pretty  sure this is how it sounds just like his music but um amazing love discordless mo
vie and I love  like we get to the trademark faulty close-up on the characters eyes while they're looking  at each other or looking at something scary so when Susie sees the blind uh Mystic woman or  whatever she is and they just the way her eyes look first of all like she looks so creepy  the way that her the contacts on she has on she looks so creepy she's blind and she's  fucking creepy she's blind and she's creepy and like they're looking back and forth and it's  just shot of her eyes then s
hot of Susie's eyes a shot of the Mystic size I then she takes money  out and then she ends up getting uh Talisman like a necklace pendant sort of thing from this woman  and she's off on her own like she her parents did not see her get this so she's the only one  who knows this thing exists because she hasn't and the father goes down with the guy into the  tomb and then he sees the um like the marking on the wall in the in the Tomb that they're  in and the it shoots the blue lasers out at him an
d it ends up blinding him in his eyes it  the effects look not good I mean they don't it's like real early like computer imagery and like  cgi-ish type stuff but it looks not good at all but it is what it is I mean that's  kind of the feel this movie has said it's this mystical feeling it's this is you know  this um like there's a there's a there's a Miss there's a mystery to what's going on here and  as you go through this movie they try to find out what is exactly happening with Susie like  it
what is this pendant that she brought back what is it where did it come from like why is  it causing all these you know hallucinations from that other people are seeing and they're  trying to figure out what exactly is going on all right all right uh somebody is here with the  weather he wants to do oh that I was supposed to go around just a little round from accrington  Niagara Falls all right meanwhile just do the weather quick little don't tell a little  recruit so let me pull up my time on
the amount of time it's my mama am I already  my times money too I hurry up uh New York it was about affordable through the rules  Fahrenheit it was a crescent moon we're not looking able to start like okay okay get away hi  goodbye all right sorry guys the fake snake well like in the movie The Snake that comes out it  doesn't look great but again like it has that charm just like this it has an 80s feel this  movie really does have an 80s feel to it like uh I don't know like his Gates of Hell  m
ovies and uh zombie and even New York Ripper like maybe near corporate did also  have like some 80s feel to it for sure but the the previous the films  as I mentioned before that they don't necessarily feel like they're from  the 80s or from 79 for zombies like they this uh imagery and stuff in most of those movies there  that could be from the 70s can be from the 60s but this movie feels very very age not as much  as murder Rock but this one does feel very 80s so even though it has some bad eff
ects and it has  some just cheesy stuff in it I just love the I love that I love the tone of this movie I loved  the atmosphere in this movie it's fun like this is a fun fault you will be like it's not that gory or  over the top or anything it's just it's cool and yeah he gets blinded in the both of his eyes by  the lasers and then he meets back up with his wife and actually the pendant uh because um the mom  meets up and finds um Susie again and she was a session I've been looking for you and t
hen they  show a close-up of the amulet like Talisman that she got and I think pretty sure it's the Eye of  Horus which is what my thumb my tattoo so that's funny maybe uh my tattoo is an evil Talisman  from Egypt so when he gets back the doctor uh says to him that yes when will I uh get my  sight back he says like in about a year or so he wear bandages for six months dude can you  imagine like being told like that you're gonna be blind for the next year like damn like I can't  imagine like and
that always brings up the debate of you know what's worse what would be worse  you know being blind or being deaf now for me oh this is so hard because music is my whole  life I mean without being able to hear music like I don't know if I can do if I can do that  but to be blind man I mean that's fucking hard it looks like I get into a whole society no Side  Story whatever the fuck they're tangent because that's gonna go on in into Crazy Land but Ah  that's got to be terrible though like both of
them sound absolutely not good so I I really have  such deep respect seriously for people who who have those afflictions and stuff or were born like  that and that they find a way to just go you know to live normal lives like that's absolutely  mind-blowing to me but um back to the movie uh Bob I forgot I freaking didn't get the name  yet again I always forget his name in this one I always remember no one was Bob from the house  by the 10th Cemetery but uh he's like he says um he calls his sist
er Susie you a naughty  lesbian or something something lesbian that's so funny like they're uh there he's pretty  young he's what like 10 11 maybe 10 years old he looks he looks he's shorter than he  looks and so that makes him look younger too yeah so Bob his name is Tommy in here not  Phillip so I don't know where I got the fuck I got Phillip from but uh his name is Tommy and  it is a cool looking amulet though that Susie has from the blind woman it's cool looking and  then I like the shot whe
n like she looks down at the amulet and you see the the jewel like that  turns blue and then it fades into the shot of the uh marking on the wall in the Tomb in Egypt and  the blue light that shot the lasers that blinded the father it's a cool transition shot I like that  I love how the moms at work and then she's like talking to somebody and then she leaves he sits  down and he's wearing one of those like glasses that have the fake mustache and the big nose  and these like Types on a typewriter
and says if like sings and then it cuts to the next scene like  it's so Random oh I love that though it's so funny I like the uh red Lighting on uh Susie when  the woman who's babysitting the kids is over and she starts saying um that she's having a  premonition and that there's going to be uh rain and thunder tonight and the babysitter says um oh  no it's going to be just fine tonight and then it starts fucking pouring right now with thunder and  lightning so I love the red Lighting on her dur
ing that theme and then I love just this the sound  design is great in this movie though and with the storm especially here like it sounds really good  and um again like these kids are okay never mind I forgot that they're uh for a second I thought  they were in the same bed I was like like 10 to 12ish or so let's get a little old but  no they had their own beds they are fine and the guy looks ridiculous though with the  two bandages over his eyes George the father and I love the score in this s
cene when  um Susie comes into her parents bedroom and asks uh because the storm's too scared  she can she sleep with them that uh tonight and they say no go to bed and they're arguing  over it a little bit the the score sounds great yeah this whole sequence of How It's all the  how it's shot with the close-up on Susie's eyes the sound of the storm like the lighting  issues coming down the hallway like her walking throughout the uh the house and the storm  lighting up the whole the hallways and
the room she's walking in that whole sequence looks  so cool with the music going and it's playing the score from the Beyond and I remember this from  the last time I saw it that it has the same music at certain points in this movie maybe only two or  three times but it uses some of the score from the Beyond and I always thought that was strange I  don't know if it's I thought maybe the last time I saw it maybe a few years ago I thought it was  maybe uh just maybe the Virgin on 2B it was just li
ke a weird cut and it used some of the Beyond  score and then I saw it on now I'm singing on uh shutter and it's the same thing you know this  is the Beyond score so I don't know does he just I guess you just reprise some of the Beyond  score for this movie but it's effective here too like just as much as it is in the Beyond  because that's core Chef kiss is amazing and then Susie during the storm went after she  walks away after that awesome scene with all the great lighting and sound effects u
m she sees and  a great shot and classic faulty I'll just quick pan and zoom in right up to her eyes and then  Zoom fast out awesome and then she screams and she sees the blue light from the uh you know the  sculpture whatever on the wall in the Tomb that shoots the lasers out and she has like a  fit and the mom doesn't know what to do see now when I'm on my re-watch and  video of enigma I thought that the uh like the glow the the glowing eyes on um  whatever her name is the main chick's mother
look stupid but here just because of you know  like I was saying earlier the feel of this movie and its atmosphere and its tone it's more  light-hearted and stuff like it works so like when Susie's eyes uh glow blue and light  up blue it it looks cool like it works Within the the universe this film is portraying to me and  to us as an audience when we watch it and then I love the scene when Tommy walks through the door  and Susie is screaming Tommy no like and he walks out the portal but it's li
ke in their doorway  one of the doorways leaning out of their room love how that's directed do I love how it  shot and I can't say enough about the sound design it's really good in this movie  great little sequence sequence too when um George is uh walking into the kid's room uh  by the door that uh Tommy went through the portal and George is looking well he's blind but and he  has the bandages on but he's facing the direction of the the doorway the portal and he gets shot  in the eyes and then
he falls to the ground and then it ends up disappearing and it says on uh  I think with the mirror it's like written it says um help me Daddy uh then it fades away like  it's like Tommy wrote it from wherever he is on the other side it's it's really  well shot I I like that little sequence and for some reason by getting shot with  the uh blue laser stuff in your eyes it that blinded to him in the first  place and also unblind to right oh I love the shot from below the glass table  looking up so
like the we're looking right at the bottom of the table through it and the Scorpion is  on it and then Susie is looking down at the camera that's such a cool shot and then she picks up the  Scorpion and puts it in her drawer with the amulet I love that shot so much and then George ends  up going to uh the guy Weiler and he ends up showing slides of pictures to George and he ends  up putting the slide on that looks exactly like what George saw in the Tomb that blinded him  the same design that's
on uh Susie's necklace the snake that appears hey that looks pretty  cool I like that I'll show you a snake California and then Tommy like she's the mom is like scared  out of her wet and then Tommy come to scares the living fuck out of her wearing this ugly fucking  mask scary looking and then takes his mask off and I just because of the kid's punchable  face he says like I and the overdub says like I didn't mean to frighten your mommy uh  honest but the Kid Likes wide-eyed shit-eating grin so
it looks so funny and then we have  the the black guy in the elevator with the um trying to open the doors and he's trying  to hold it and stuff and try to open the main doors and then like his hands are getting  bloodied up that's pretty much most of the gore like we get in this movie there's like I said  there's not a lot of Gore in this movie and it doesn't need doesn't need it and I think it's the  appropriate amount of Gore is in this film and uh I mean could I I'll always want more so I  m
ean I love Gore and I love effects work but I think it's the uh it's a fine amount  of course a fine amount California and then George in front of  his whole family proceeds to walk up the stairs and walk around saying Locus  cadaver to open sesame and Lucas Focus oh my apologies uh not George it was uh the friend Luke  that was his name Luke who got who uh was doing the orchest bogus and then he got zapped then he  gets Zapped away and fucking whatever happens to him when he gets shot with thos
e lasers he's gone  and he's in an alternate Dimension or something man another awesome transition shot when uh  she's looking the mom's looking into the room I'm pretty sure it was the  kids rooms and the wood floor like just slowly Fades into uh the desert and the  sand dunes awesome shot too and then we get the um scorpion coming out of the sand now is that like  to me like at the beginning when she has her hand with the sand in it Susie and then we see  her letting it fall through our hands
and then we get the close-up shot and the Sand's  going down like it's going getting sucked down then we see it again and it's coming up  like it's like it's in going in reverse I wonder if that's supposed to like represent like maybe like a wormhole like you know like one way  or the other way or just like time travel or to go from literally be the starting point going  to from this Dimension R Dimension to another dimension and then when it reverses is coming  back you know from that Dimension
back to ours all right Tubi wants me to tell you that Little  Caesars is giving away five pies for Super Bowl Sunday next year five pies for the price of 15.95  wow five pies for 15.95 on Super Bowl Sunday for next year to him they're already advertising this  fucking insane also from 2B to me to you guys they said if you want a maxi pad that's able  to stop a heavy flow you're going to want to go with green osoft the loving caring tampon I'm  just saying what they're telling me here we come th
e person who plays Susie is just like the girl  who plays her her eyes she has a really like big eyes so like she can like widen them and it just  makes her look really creepy like especially if she starts like getting like kind of like  influenced by the evil in this uh Talisman that she has no on the kids and the mom were in  the park and then they take the picture uh the mom takes the picture of Susie and it's just the  Medallion you know the Talisman necklace she's uh around her neck but she
's not in the picture it's  just it floating in the air that's a cool shot and does anybody else wish I know what maybe  two people who have been following my channel a long while we'll get that like maybe but Tommy  slash Bob oh I can't with this guy with this this guy this fucking kid the eye on The Medallion  represents is supposed to be uh the eye of evil so it brings evil energy upon  those who wear it or possess it now I definitely can see why this is a less talked  about and underrated in
my opinion faulty film is that I can see people having some  pacing issues with it I can see people seeing it as slow at times and it is it can be  slow at times but if it's not working for them or not working for you on any like major level  that's making you enjoy you know the uptime enough to go through the downtime then  you know it might not be for you but I I think the pacing is absolutely fine like  it I it always breatheses breezes through for me this movie like it's such a fun watch  b
ut um then they end up meeting with the uh what the hell is this character's name oh  no before that the uh old woman there was an old woman like unlike uh a few stories up on  the apartment building and she's like yelled down to uh the mom and she said um like for  your children and she dropped something to her and I think it was like a drawing or something  and she's recall she's telling this to uh her husband now she's at her husband's  office and she's uh telling him what happened they also
had somebody uh Olaf  something I don't know his last name um test the sand that they found in the kids room  that they found traces of sand and it's confirmed the results came back that the Sanders from Egypt  so like oh how did sand from Egypt get there um I don't know maybe the girl had it on inner  sneakers and it fell on the floor now but like this is like a decent amount like more sand  they don't really show it except for like one quick little leg shot and you still don't  really see how
much is in there but yeah so now there's uh seems to be some type of Portal from  this is how I always took it like a portal from like where the person is with The Medallion  to that tomb or the at least the area in Egypt right around the tomb since the light the  blue light on The Medallion on the jewel of it is the same blue light as the one inside the  tomb so I think there's some type of Link there but we only besides that all we know  about it is that there's just severe like negative evil
energy attached to it and  it infects whoever it is in possession of it and then the parents ask the kids  what happened to uh the female friend uh and they just pull up look at each other and  then uh Bob slash Tommy freaking Bob it's like uh she went on a trip and they just look at him and  said they went on a trip she went on a trip and then that's it and then they're in bed that night  so no more questions needed Jamie Lee her name was Jamie Lee the one that went on a trip they ain't  come b
ack so then we have the guy with the beard got a hold of the picture of Susie not being  there but the necklace is floating in the air and dude gets Wasted by a snake ends up appearing  in his uh store and he ends up dropping the photograph and he falls to the ground and then  Susie like it's woken up from her awoken from her sleep and starts screaming just like uh just  non-stop like ah a little high-pitched and just shaking in bed and like her eyes are almost rolled  in the back of her head li
ke creepy like she could put something good performance actually the young  actress who plays uh who played Susie in this foreign [Music] foreign so George and his wife are talking to Tommy I always keep wanting to say Bob God damn  it oh that's because there's no response I know the reason me what I didn't ever all right fine  could we have the weather update a little or about the weather update around there it was  about four to seven other girls or New York all right you're in New York too pl
ease leave me  alone let me just finish we're almost done with the movie okay just please I don't know I know  you don't know I know don't worry okay take care bye-bye all right bye-bye oh and anyway so Tommy  starts saying that it's um that they go on trips and he starts saying it's the game that Susie  made up and then uh the father's asking him and saying like oh what type uh how do you play this  game do you know how to play and he said that he went on a trip last week and he got a souvenir
he  brought back and he brings back a statue of Anubis so again there's got to be some type of portal  or to another dimension or like straight to to Egypt like right near that tomb or something like  that is what I've always taken from him so anyone else any uh theories or anything like that on  this movie and what exactly uh the amulet does is what power it possesses and anything like  that where does the uh doorways go let me know leave it in the comments let's discuss it so they  go and see
Mr Mercato while Susie stays at home so Mercado tells them to just the biggest rule  no matter what make sure their daughter doesn't have the Jewel and then we get the music kicks  in from the also from the beyond the uh with the funky bass line like in the uh tarantula  in the library scene so I I there's got to be a story behind that with wide the Beyond uh music  is used on this uh film I'm really interested now and we get another really cool scene with um  Susie having another episode and li
ke she's like standing and she like shaking pretty much and  we're seeing the images of um the Scorpion and then we see the sand you know we see her holding  her hand out and sanding it and then we see the shot of the sand you know pouring down through the  fingers or like like it looks like it's going down the hole like the quicksand like all those quick  succession of uh shots and just seems like she's put she's able to put other people in a trance  almost like like from the evil energy in The
Medallion and the necklace that is influencing  her and then she ends up passing out from over exertion I guess and she ends up uh she's resting  in bed and they're trying to figure out what to do then I oh I like this scene a lot when um this  is like a short little uh sequence but when they go into the room and Susie's again she's like  sleeping in bed but uh mercados on the floor and he's like talking in Susie's voice like so  Susie's talking through him and starts like like hurting himself
like controlling him like that's  that's some freaky stuff now they're doing some type of seance or some ritual to try to figure out  uh anything and more that they can about the stone oh then when Susie's in bed and she's like  it she looks freezing so I mean good job with makeup she'll the shoes look so cold  and she's saying like Mama like I'm cold and like her mom's hugging her oh man that sucks  that's sad like imagine being like possessed or like not possessed but in this case but like  in
fluenced by some like old Egyptian magical thing like Jewel whatever like for a kid  especially on socks so what do they do they start fucking electrocuting their brain no they  do like tests on their brain and fault you there there's some excellent camera work here at um  when um you hear the words um oh what the hell does he say punish me that's it when you hear  Tommy's voice say punish me and when mercado's looking at the stone at on the amulet and  it starts glowing blue and the blue color
and Lighting on his face and then he's going  in like a trance and then you see Tommy and he's staring at this red like paint on the wall  or something but then there's some amazing like really original looking camera work and stuff but  like it kind of you see like the particles of the paint like coming off and then like going back  together like I can't even describe it it's just it looks really really cool and then red lighting  and coloring on Tommy's face looks pretty cool too and then they
're looking and we're finally about  to get the test results for Susie and I love the sound design again in this movie but like there's  a sound going like like I threw these intense uh sequences and it sounds fucking awesome that  sounds really really cool and we had a great seat uh it's really tense and really chilling  but then hilarious at the same time because of Tommy slash Bob and we see uh the skeletal  remains of like when I said Bob was looking at like the the wall and there was like t
he red  painting or whatever on it but it starts breaking away and then you see if the skeleton an arm of  a skeleton hanging out and he says poor Jamie Lee so I'm being I guess Jamie Lee who disappeared  into a different world before or another dimension wherever this door takes them and then she died  or she like somehow she ended up just in the wall So Jamie Lee is gone and we're assuming Luke  is gone too so Mercado tells George that his daughter Susie is is she's clean she's cleansed  basic
ally that there's no uh more negative energy attached to her and that he did a transference  and transferred it to him so he's taking on the energy the negative energy the evil energy  from this thing and he wants George to throw it down to like the deepest darkest Ocean or  something to get rid of the uh the pendant we get a great scene with some good Gore  effects when Mercado after he did the transfer and spell the negative energies  on him and Susie supposedly saved he's in his office and th
e stuffed birds come to life  and start attacking him and they start like uh biting and ripping pieces of Flesh off of his  face and the blood's coming down and pieces of Flesh are being ripped off looks awesome and  the bird effects they don't look too bad I mean they're stuffed birds coming to life is what  they're supposed to be coming back to life so I mean it it's effective like it's a it's a really  cool scene one of my favorite scenes in the movie and I love it because it goes on a while
too like it's probably like a good 60 plus seconds of eating off this guy's face  like they and they bite his ear off at one point and then like leaves the lower  part of it the side of his neck like uh the front like by his uh a little above his eyelid  like great like great core effects as usual from the grandfather uh grandfather and grandfather  of Gore then we go back to Egypt and we see you know after mercado's dead and Susie's all  right and then we see the blind Gypsy Woman from the beg
inning with the gray contacts look so evil  with close-up faulty shot on her eyes and then close up faulty shot on another girl and she's  giving her the same medallion so she is is it the same one that transferred like just ended up back  over to her does she have a bunch of these and they all have a curse I'm guessing it's probably  maybe the same one but awesome movie man I mean this is a fun one it really is this is definitely  just a real fun watch if you want to put on some faulty and just
want to listen and listen  just want to watch it's a fun faulty movie like just that the characters aren't anything great  and we have Bob or Tommy in this one so I mean that's nothing to really Rave about but just this  the movie has a lot of charm like I was saying and there's definitely some great scenes in here  there's some great uh there's a few uh sequences that are I have a decent amount of tension in them  and there's some just disturbing stuff like in all faulty stuff and there is a l
ot of great cam work  and like I said it's like the middle of the road fall cheap so it's nowhere near uh his best at all  but uh there's a lot worse and this one definitely is underrated and talked about not nearly as much  as it should be because it deserves to be talked about every now and then like uh Manhattan maybe  it's always been a fun watch for me but all right guys that's the Lucio fault you use Manhattan  baby I mean baby YouTube welcome to rotten Rose all right guys that'll conclude
this  uh nice episode of horror after dark podcast in the sack with JT thank you guys  for tuning in and um tomorrow it is going to be Thursday but since it is 4 a.m it is  Thursday tomorrow making today Wednesday and that means mystery spoiler  discussion live number five I want to say yes I think it is number five there's nothing to  the number six but I think it's number five and um that is going to be tomorrow at 3 P.M or  today technically whatever so tune in for that guys and with me and
Dave are going to have to  reschedule our Evil Dead rise talk uh he's not uh available on Thursday so we're gonna have to  postpone that for uh probably next week sometime so all right wherever you guys are from hope  you're having a great morning noon or over here night it's horror after dark the podcast getting  this hack with JT JT saying good night everybody

One of the things that bothered me the most about this is that when the kids came back from their “voyages," they're perfectly fine. It would’ve made more sense if they were possessed by a demon or an evil entity or if the kids were rather trapped or killed in the other dimension while doppelgängers of the kids were sent to haunt or kill the family or whatever.
