unity next that the founder of the downtown boxing gym khi Sweeney says he couldn't be more humbled and grateful that his nonprofit received a $2 million Grant McKenzie Scott the founder of yield giving and ex-wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has donated more than $7 billion to more than 2,300 nonprofits the goal to recognize those making an impact across the country including many here in Michigan like the downtown baching gym I'm grateful um I really appreciate show support Sweeny says right now
there is a waiting list of more than 2,000 kids trying to enter his program and that's really bothered him despite the organization's success I know for a fact that County Jail ain't got a wi I know for a fact that City MO don't have weakness but right now for places like this we need to keep the doors open too as well Sweeny says this grant will allow him to get those kids in the program one that was recently recognized by the Library of Congress for its achievements teaching literacy and then
we had the national uh science found just um invest heavily into our steam program so that's major too Sweeny founded the downtown boxing gym back in 2007 as a way to get kids interested in different subjects like financial literacy Reading Writing Steam and even music I used the boxing as the hook to get the kids in there that was my whole purpose let's build a community that supports one another and provide resources we're going to use something that's going to keep them interesting if you'd l
