Madame Web Review - IT’S MORBIN TIME

Welcome back everyone It's Morbin' Time The Madame Web movie is out. This will be my review. And it's exactly what most you probably expected of Matt Web. It's mind boggling how the movie ended up the way it did given how good some of Sony's other Spider-Man related movies like Spider-Man, No Way Home, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse have been like, How do you make such good stuff? I did a bunch of videos for that Spider-Man beyond the Spider-Verse is coming in the next couple of years. They were just commenting on that too. they even confirmed Tom Holland's Spider-Man for like, it's all happening. Like there is some good Spider-Man related stuff happening in some good Marvel related stuff happening. Deadpool wi

ll see to that like he is in charge of making good Marvel stuff this year. But I had a chance to see Madame Web recently. It's the latest Sony Spider-Man spinoff movie in their attempt to capitalize on the 900 plus characters that they draw because of the way their rights to the Spider-Man character work in the movies. Essentially, the movie is kind of like Final Destination meets Terminator, but in the Marvel Universe was Spider-Man related characters. in at least originally, it was meant to se

rve as a prequel to the origin story of one of the biggest Peter Parker Spider-Man versions that you've seen in the movies the past 20 years. All explained a little bit about what happened with that storyline, because I think it's indicative of some of the problems that the movie wound up having because they made so many changes while they were actually making it. as the title implies, it's meant to be an origin story. Inside the Venom Universe for the Madame Web character played by Dakota Johns

on, Cassandra Web is her name is Starz. Sydney Sweeney is Julia Cornwall, who's meant to be a version of Julia Carpenter, a.k.a. Spider Woman. In a couple other versions of Spider Woman two, Isabel Amor said, playing Anya Corazon, Celeste O'Connor playing Maddie Franklin, all of them from the comics with a couple other comic book characters, like Adam Scott and Emma Roberts, both playing characters that were meant to be really important to the Spider-Man origin story of it all. The main villain

is a version of Ezekiel Simms, also from the Spider-Man comics, played by Tamir Rahim. but for a couple of reasons some of them more confusing than others. They make a lot a lot of changes to their comic book backstories Generally speaking, though, Sony's Spider-Verse movies like Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse across the Spider-Verse serve as really good examples of just pure Sony movies like movies that Sony makes by itself without any help from the MCU. one really, really well critically and with fans like they've been able to hit heights that some of the live action spider movies like Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man or Tom Holland's Spider-Man has been able to hit, for instance, Spider-Man, No Way Home, Spider-Man, far from home. Both earning multiple billions of dollars. But those live action. Tom Holland movies have been collaborations with Marvel. . but all the Spider-Verse stuff is just pure Sony in a good example that they can make good Spider-Man movies if they want to, I'd say the Venom movies have been able to earn some money, but they're still kind of viewed as solid B-movie material compared to the level store quality mainline Spider-Man movies or like the Spider-Verse movies. Now. Madam Webb on the other side of that spectrum is effectively the morbius movie, but with a bunch of female characters, like it fits in in a morbius kind

of way, some fans will watch the movie and say, How dare you compare this to Morbius? Morbius is a gem. Next amount of web. I don't know if I would go that far. Like it's not a good movie and it's not one of those movies that's so bad that they're good. Like it's not fun to watch bad movies. there are some movies out there that are terrible, and they're fun to watch because they're so bad. but some movies are just plain bad and some are punishingly bad to have to sit through. so we'll try to ex

plain where the Madame Web movie falls down is suffers from a lot of the same issues that plague the Morbius movie. Like this is a very familiar situation, which is why there are so many Morbin time memes out there. Even the marketing campaign for the Madam Web movie is sort of to lean into all the means. Generally, the movie feels like a failure on almost all levels. Like the cinematography is pretty solid. Like, that's one good thing you can say about the movie in The Actresses are all great a

ctresses, but the movie completely wastes them Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabella Hammer said. Celeste O'Connor, Adam Scott, Emma Roberts of all people, they've all had great movies, great TV shows before this. So like, you know, they can deliver solid material if you give it to them. Isabella, Amber said was literally just cast the brand new hawkgirl in James Gunn's new Superman Legacy movie, and he is super picky as hell when it comes to casting. He would not have cast her if she was not

great. but in the Madame Web movie, it's almost like they started with a promising premise. Terminator meets Final Destination. But with Spider-Man characters meant to act as a prequel, like I said to one of the biggest versions of Peter Parker, Spider-Man you've seen in the movies the past 20 years. But at some point, Sony and Marvel either got scared or there was some major issue behind the scenes or argument that caused them to destroy the movie in the editing. It's what's known as death by

a thousand cuts like destroy the movie in the editing bay like you have all the material there but just cut out all the good stuff so what you're left with and what the Madam Web movie kind of felt like was just a total mess on screen. I wouldn't say the Madame Web movie is punishing to say through kind of like morbius, but it's such a non event. Like you wonder why this movie exists at all other than Sony had the rights they need to do a movie with Spider-Man. Only two characters to release thi

s year, so that might earn some money for some people. one of the funny things about Hollywood is sometimes studios will do that like not just comic book movies, but for all movies their release something just because they have an open release slot and they need to release something so that the people making it can actually earn some money. Even if the film itself claims a loss like an army of people got paid to make this along with other comic book movies and TV shows. The past couple of years

that have lost the studios money ultimately. So even if a movie does terribly, there's still a bunch of people that actually walk away earning a bunch of money on it. during the whole marketing campaign for the movie, you could almost see like everybody was trying to apologize for the movie preemptively, like they wanted to get ahead of everything. And it seems like post Morbius they're also leaning into all the Madame web memes like enjoy this movie. It's fun to watch bad movies like we can all

have fun doing this. really good example. Dakota Johnson, known for her typical deadpan sense of humor in all of her real life interviews. Like, she's genuinely funny, but she has a certain style to her. But it almost seems like you can kind of see her trying to distance herself from this movie early on. Like you can see her checking out emotionally. She knows what's up and I don't totally fault her or the other actresses for this movie not living up to its initial promise. It seems like one of

those situations where Sony wanted to rush a Spider-Man related movie out because it had to hit a release date, even though the script wasn't ready in, the producers behind the scenes couldn't agree on how much actual Spider-Man stuff would be in the movie. like how much the movie would be connected to the other Venom movies. Morbius the other Spider-Man related movies in the MCU movies, because apparently that's a big point of contention between Marvel and Sony, Even for the Tom Holland's Spid

er-Man movies like Spider-Man four, I'll probably get into this during my longer Easter Egg video, but I don't consider it a spoiler because it didn't wind up making the final movie. But originally there was going to be way more Spider-Man related stuff, and it is a bit of a morbius situation where, like you see the Morbius trailer and there's all these Spider-Man references, but then they take them out of the final cut of the movie because it sounds like either Sony or Marvel just could not agr

ee on how much they wanted to connect things to the main line. Tom Holland, Spider-Man movies or the other, like Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Spider-Man movies. generally it seems like there's a camp at Sony that hopes that if they put more Spider-Man stuff in their movies, it doesn't matter what the movie is, people will just pay to see it, which obviously is not the case. Personally, I think the smarter minds probably prevail. Like even if there had been a ton of Spider-Man stuff in this mo

vie, it still probably would not have done well. that's kind of what happened to the Morbius movie, too. Like it came out so close to Spider-Man, No way home. It almost would have hurt Spider-Man. No way home had it had too many connections to the mainline versions of Spider-Man. So Kevin Feige, the Sony people basically agreed, Let's not hurt the success of Spider-Man. No Way Home, just because we want Morbius to earn a couple extra million dollars. don't kill your multibillion dollar movie jus

t because you want to earn a couple extra million dollars. in generally a big part of Tom Hall, Spider-Man four right now is Marvel and Sony agreeing on what kind of movie is going to be just to begin with. Like, will it be a giant multiverse movie with more Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield coming back? Apparently, if Sony has their way, that's what it's going to be. But Kevin Feige the MCU, the Marvel people probably more wisely want to make it more of a ground level friendly neighborhood, Spider

-Man kind of movie with like Daredevil in Kingpin in other Spider-Man films that we haven't seen in the movies before. slowly backing away from the multiverse of it all, which gets back into the Madame Web things of it all, too, because she is a big multiverse character in the comics. Like that's the whole core of the character that she travels the web of life and destiny. And they just started doing that in Spider-Man across the Spider-Verse We know we're going to have Avengers Secret Wars in t

he next couple of years. we literally just saw a reference to that at the end of the Deadpool in Wolverine trailer, like literally a comic book from Secret Wars with Doctor Doom on the cover. Like, yeah, we're doing this. So initially, it feels like when they started making the Madame Web movie, they thought they would latch on to this hype train heading up to Avengers Secret Wars. Like, yeah, we'll be part of this big thing that going into all of the Spider-Man related stuff in Secret Wars in A

vengers five. within the last couple of years, while they were actually making the movie, things started to go south and Marvel started backing off of the multiverse stuff. And like you have Deadpool being the only movie they're releasing this year, Marvel is trying to fix their own issues on their side of things, like in the MCU, by slowing everything down, Deadpool and Wolverine is going to be the only MCU movie this release this year so they can focus all their attention on making it as good

as possible. but on the other side of that, it seems like Sony hasn't totally learned that lesson yet. There are a bunch of Spider-Man movies they're releasing this year. There's the Madame Web movie right now. Then we have the Kraven movie and then Venom three, all releasing in the same year I don't want to be too hard on the Madam Web movie like it is a mess. Like it is full Morbin time. But they're playing a couple of things. Some people will be able to enjoy. Like if you're a really big fan

of these characters in the comics, it will be fun for you to see them on screen. But like I said, I feel like the movie kind of wastes them generally going forward, my hope for like the Sony side of all of these Marvel characters, they call it the Sony universe of Marvel characters, essentially like the Sony Cinematic Universe. But with Spider-Man characters my hope is they take a page from the Marvel book like they pull a marvel, they slow their output down just a little bit and focus a little

bit more on quality, like get the script where it needs to be before you start shooting. to make sure you deliver on the movie you initially intended on making instead of destroying it in the editing bay. my hope is the Kraven movie winds up being a little bit better. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has done a lot of good stuff. It looks like it is going to be crazy, so hopefully it doesn't suffer from some of the same issues as Matt and Webb in the Morbius movie it it does sound like Venom three is going

to be the last venom solo movie in that Tom Hardy franchise. So hopefully they do go out with a bang. there are a lot of different ways this is go down for Sony this year.
