Maine Mobile BIOLAB will bring STEM education directly to middle school students

The mobile bioscience laboratory will begin working with students in more rural areas as a way to get them interested in biotech careers and life sciences.

[Music] our schools in Maine are expanding their stem learning programs to teach kids about science technology engineering and math but some smaller rural school districts don't always have the access to the technology they need Sam Rogers shows us how education leaders are helping to bridge the gap there is a new effort to promote stem education in main schools while also building up a pipeline for an industry that supports more than 9,000 jobs and it will meet Main students right where they ar
e 1 2 3 so you stocked it up and then you put it down into the uh tubes there's like interesting things that I like to learn about we get to learn like more about like tiny things that we don't even see main students and Main lawmakers look at that checking out the new main mobile biolab I'm mad scientist now this state-of-the-art facility is set to travel across acoss Maine to give students a unique Hands-On learning experience what we've heard from Main students and Main Educators is that they
want to have more stem experiences in their own backyards and the mobile lab lets kids do just that by using new technology and equipment that may not be available at their school or even within their Community when students step onto the lab wow this is really cool they'll learn the metric system how to record data and for Wednesday's lesson how to transfer small amounts of liquids they learn how it works by getting their hands on it and figuring it out themselves Heather Carlile is a former p
ublic school teacher and will work with students on the lab she says the programming is targeted for middle school students fitting 24 at a time and she works with teachers to build a specific life sciences lesson for their students so getting them engaged and excited about science at this age May inform what classes they take in high school you're going to push it down to that first stop as we learned it's engaging and fun all right so you hold it your hands the plan is for the lab to visit 12
rural sites this school year so we wanted to prioritize our underserved schools and in lots of different regions of main the Maine mobile bio lab will make its first official stop in Fort Kent next Monday in Augusta Sam Rogers News Center Maine
