The movie begins with an audio of a boy getting a good ole ass whooping from his father. It turns out it is a man named Marquis Woods getting flashbacks of his horrible childhood. Marq snaps back to the present and puts on his expensive suit. He and his wife, Veora live the high life; they share a romantic kiss before departing their separate ways. In the next scene, Marq heads to his high paying law firm job. It is revealed that he is a ruthless defense lawyer, who won’t even hesitate to put on
e of his relatives in prison. According to Marq, he doesn’t work for love, he works for money. Later, he gets a call from his father’s lawyer from his hometown. Marq is informed that his abusive father has passed away and there are matters of his estate that need to be resolved. Marq seems to be a bit shaken by the news. After returning from work, he breaks the news to his wife, teenage daughter Samsara, and son Tydon. It is revealed that Marq hasn’t seen his father since he ran away from home d
ecades ago. Veora then suggests that regardless of Marq’s history with his father, they should visit his hometown, so they can pay their final respects to him, and close the chapter for good. The next day, the family heads to Marq’s hometown, Appalachia, which is a small African American village located near the hills. Marq turns out to have so much money that he flies his family to his hometown on a private plane. Before reaching their destination, they stop by for refueling. At the gas station
store, Marq comes across human skulls and preserved animals for sale, most likely for black magic. He also finds the store owner sewing a mojo bag, which is a religious bag that can apparently ward off evil spirits. When the store owner learns that Marq is heading further up the hills, he asks him to take one of the bags for protection. However, Marq doesn’t believe in these things so he simply grabs his stuff and leaves. Meanwhile, outside, Tydon talks to a local guy. The talkative rural guy a
sks him about his strange fingers, and Tydon explains that he busted it while playing basketball. Tydon further reveals that he came here for his grandfather’s funeral in the yonder foothills. Strangely, the mere mention of the yonder foothills spooks the talkative guy and he quickly leaves the scene. When the family is about to take off, an officer suddenly stops by, as if his only purpose in being there is to cause them trouble. But it’s not that easy; Mark is ready, and starts talking about t
he regulations that allow him to land, so the officer tells them he just wants to make sure that everything is alright. After this, the family takes off for their destination. However, the weather suddenly changes midway, and it gets pretty dark. Despite this, Marq asks his kids how they are liking his hometown, but the two teens insult the place. They also make fun of the local black people, calling them inbred hillbillies. Seeing her children's lack of respect for other black people, Veora is
upset. During this, the plane is suddenly caught in a storm, and the father loses all control when the plane is struck by lightning. In the next scene, Marq regains consciousness in an unfamiliar room, and realizes that he has wounds all over his body. His foot is also broken, but he gathers all his strength, and somehow drags himself to the room’s window. As Marq peeks out, he learns that he’s in the attic of someone’s farm house. Suddenly, the homeowner Ms. Eloise, an old but sharp lady, appea
rs. She tries to get him back on the bed, but Marq resists and asks about his family. As a result, Ms. Eloise calls her husband, Earl, and their giant son, Lewis. Big boy Lewis picks up Marq, and basically throws him on the bed like a sack of potatoes. When our hero still continues to ask about his family, Earl reveals that he was involved in a plane accident, and that there was no one else except Marq in that damaged plane. Marq obviously doesn’t believe this, so Ms. Eloise blows a powder over
his face, rendering him asleep. Later, we see her preparing something meticulously. She adds pieces of clothes together, dyes them with color, and heats it in the oven. At last, she prepares some sort of doll, and her husband is very happy to see it, while their son works on digging some graves in the land. After this, Ms. Eloise goes to Marq’s room, and wakes him up by blowing powder to his face. Here Marq politely asks to be taken to the hospital, and he even promises to pay her a lot of cash
for the help. However, the cunning woman claims that there’s no hospital for miles around here. Instead, she takes out the creepy looking doll, which scarily resembles Marq. Ms. Eloise calls it Boogity, and explains that she made it using his nail clippings, hair, blood, and pinch of semen. According to her, the more good things happen to the doll, the more good things happen to the real Marq. She then places the voodoo doll on the window, and pours a white powder at the window to keep the devil
away. After she leaves, Marq, who doesn’t believe in these things, starts looking for a way to escape. Despite his broken foot, he somehow gets up and scans the room. The door has been locked, so he sneaks out from the window into the roof. He jumps from one roof to another in the heavy rain, and reaches above the barn where Ms. Eloise has gathered with other villagers. It turns out this strange woman heals people with her black magic for a living. Earl tells the villagers that today Ms. Eloise
is going to use animal parts. Soon, Ms. Eloise calls one patient, who turns out to be mute, while Earl cuts a cat’s tongue, and puts it on a mute patient’s boogity. Ms. Eloise then reads some spells, and then the patient starts speaking. The crowd rejoices as Marq watches it all unfold from a large peep hole on the roof. Eloise then moves on to her next patient, a blind man named Julius. Earl puts the cat’s eyes in his boogity, while Ms. Eloise puts a goat’s eyes in Julius’s eye socket. She the
n reads a spell and asks him to speak up. Lo and behold, Julius gains his eyesight, but the first thing he points is Marq peeking from the roof. Our hero quickly ducks, but Ms. Eloise suspects that he has gotten out. She proceeds to inspect the attic with Earl and giant Lewis, as Marq tries to race back to his room with his injured foot in the heavy rain. Instead of running away, he manages to return to his room on time, but Ms. Eloise notices the open window, and Marq soaking wet. Nonetheless,
she decides to let it slide, and asks Marq if he believes in voodoo healing. He responds that he doesn’t, and says she is like his father, a superstitious person. This offends Ms. Eloise; she locks the window and door before leaving him alone. The next day, Marq has a nightmare of his dad beating him up. He suddenly wakes up to incoming message sounds coming from a cell phone, but he forgets about it when he finds a plate full of meat next to him. He relishes the dish prepared by Ms. Eloise, and
apologizes to her for being rude the other day. Ms. Eloise accepts his apology, and goes to the kitchen to refill his plate, leaving the attic door open. Seeing this, Marq uses the opportunity to take out the bell attached to the door. After Marq finishes the food, Ms. Eloise collects the bones. She explains that bones can tell one’s future, claiming that these bones are telling her that on the day of the blood moon, Marq will get all the poison out of his body and meet his family. She then ask
s him to throw the bones, and she storms out of the room, leaving him with the bones. After a while, a bored Marq starts to assemble the bones. But to his horror, he realizes that it’s a human hand. It appears to be his son Tydon’s hand as it has a broken middle finger. Disgusted that he consumed his own son’s meat, Marq panics and pukes everything he consumed. He then decides to get out of this wretched place once and for all. Marq carefully unlocks the door, and sneaks out of the room. He slow
ly but steadily drags himself downstairs with his injured feet. But before he can escape, the family’s pet crow starts making noise. This alerts Ms. Eloise, and she goes to the attic to check. When she finds Marq missing, she immediately summons her husband and son to quickly bring him back. In the meantime, Marq grabs a flashlight and flees the house. Amidst the darkness and rain, he runs into the woods, and soon comes across the debris of his plane. Inside, he notices the blood of his family s
plattered around, but no dead bodies. Marq then notices a hut nearby, but before he can investigate, he is tackled to the ground by Lewis. He wakes up in Ms. Eloise’s attic the next day, and notices her leaving for the market with Earl. Marq then decides to remove the dressing from his feet, only to find a large spike shoved in it, which is why he keeps feeling the pain. Turns out Ms. Eloise put it there to keep him from healing and running away. Here Marq gathers all his strength and pulls the
nail out his leg. Marq then ventures out, and notices three newly filled graves. Assuming the worst, he frantically digs them, but fortunately, they are just the graves of sacrificed animals. Marq then heads to the barn, where he comes across the door to a secret basement. He goes inside looking for his family, but instead finds Ms. Eloise’s operating room. There are several dark magic books, boogity dolls, and desecrated dead bodies. As if that weren’t enough, a photo reveals that Ms. Eloise an
d her family are actually centuries old, and they have been living with the help of voodoo magic. Marq then goes through her books, and learns that she is preparing him for the blood moon day for the transference of life spell. In this spell, a person's life is sacrificed to mend someone else's injuries. Realizing that they are about to kill him, Marq decides to turn the tables on them. He uses some items in the room, and prepares a Boogity doll for Ms. Eloise. Following this, Mark hides the boo
gity doll, and proceeds to return to the attic before the old witch comes back. But just then, he hears the sound of a phone ring, and manages to find his son’s phone, which he takes to his room. Unfortunately, during the rush, he forgets to close the main door. Soon, Ms. Eloise arrives and notices the door open. Before she walks towards the attic, Marq ultimately decides to put the spike back into his foot, and cover it with dressing. When the lady enters the room, she inspects his leg, and doe
sn’t find anything suspicious so she lets him be. After she leaves, Marq calls 911 using the phone. He manages to contact a policeman named Tom, who turns out to be the officer at the gas station. He reveals that Veora and Samsara came to the police station 5 days ago, and reported Marq and Tydon missing, and the police have been on the lookout for them ever since. Hearing this, Marq breaks down in tears as he realizes that his son is no more. He tells the officer that he has been held hostage b
y Ms. Eloise and Earl. The policeman recognizes the couple and immediately sets off to their farm. Soon after, the policeman arrives downstairs. But Ms. Eloise becomes enraged when she learns of this so she grabs Marq’s boogity doll and presses it hard, causing the real Marq to feel the same effect. The witch takes his voice away, and wraps a thread around the boogity, effectively tying Marq up. As she meets the officer, Marq somehow hops to the window but fails to speak and alert the cop. He ca
n’t let her voice out, but he still refuses to give up this time. Marq gathers all his strength and picks up the boogity doll from the window. He then hops downstairs like a paralyzed guy, but the policeman has already left. Ms. Eloise and his family also spot him, but he manages to run away from the house. Soon, full moon arrives and Marq is in the middle of the woods. He eventually catches up to the officer and hops in his car. Marq then puts a thread in the boogity’s mouth, which gives his vo
ice back. He explains his entire ordeal to the officer and requests him to drive away as fast as he can. Unfortunately, the cop drives them back to Ms. Eloise’s farm, revealing that he is also a part of their clan. Marq is dragged into the barn, where the villagers have gathered to witness his sacrifice. To Marq's astonishment, Veora, Samsara and Tydon are also brought there. It turns out his son is alive after all. But they seem to be under a spell, which has rendered them quiet and calm. Ms. E
loise blows her magic dust on Marq and he falls asleep. He is laid on a table as the villagers cheer on. Here, Ms. Eloise wants to extract his heart out and put it inside Earl, so that he can live a long and happy life. But just when she proceeds to stab Marq with a dagger, he blocks her attack and stabs Earl with the spike, right in the heart, All the villagers, including Ms. Eloise, run out in fear. A flashback reveals that when Marq was in the secret basement, he actually switched Ms. Eloise’
s magic dusts, which is why he didn’t lose consciousness. Once everyone is out of the barn, Marq wakes his family up by blowing the right powder in their faces, and he notices that Tydon’s hand has been amputated. Following this, Marq ambushes the corrupt cop in the woods, finishes him off, and steals his car. But instead of leaving with his family, he returns to the barn as he has unfinished business. He soon gets into a fight with the giant Lewis, while the villagers are looking for him outsid
e. Lewis starts choking him. But then suddenly, the giant starts gasping for air and vomits a lot of water before passing away. Outside, Ms. Eloise discovers that Marq had actually drowned her son’s boogity doll in the water. Enraged, she confronts Marq in the barn, and admits that he was smart for drowning Lewis’s boogity doll. She then proceeds to stab him, but Marq blows the magic dust over her face, freezing her. After this, he brings out Ms. Eloise's boogity doll that he made himself earlie
r. He hammers it with all his strength, sending the real Ms. Eloise flying. Her body knocks over a wooden pillar, and the place catches fire. Marq then exits the barn with a bunch of boogity dolls belonging to the villagers. He also makes sure to seal the barn with the white dust that is used to keep the devil from leaving or entering a space. This traps the witch inside, and she eventually burns to death. The other villagers rush to confront Marq, but he threatens to use their boogity dolls, ma
king them immediately retreat. In the final scene, Marq goes back to his family, and they watch as the barn is engulfed in flames. Together, they get into the cop’s car, and leave the village once and for all. The movie ends as we see Ms. Eloise’s boogity suddenly opening its eyes in the barn.

Why is this recap talking about their race so much? "Don't disrespect black people"? Shouldn't it be just not to disrespect people in general??
