You had to figure that once Greta Gerwig, the writer-director behind sharp-witted, class and gender explorations like Frances Ha, Ladybird and Little Women was enlisted to direct Barbie (and co-write it with partner Noah Baumbach, no philistine himself as the filmmaker behind The Squid and the Whale, Marriage Story, etc.), the social commentary would cut far deeper than the inevitable “Barbie dolls are bad for body image” critiques. Warner Bros. and Mattel`s pink-plastered, star-studded, excessively buzzy $145 blockbuster, though, has been marketed heavily as a broad fish-out-of-water comedy — in this case Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) leave Barbie Land for the real world — a la Will Ferrell`s 2003 holiday favorite. (Ferrell costars in Barbie`s massive ensemble that also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Dua Lipa). Therein lies the film`s Trojan Horse aspect. "A cocktail of sorts," as Gerwig puts it.
I hope you've used up your Ken energy because Barbenheimer is finally here. After weeks of hype leading up to its release, the oddball couple Barbie and Oppenheimer is now showing in multiplexes across the country. Theater chains such as AMC are already touting the hefty double-billing advances of Greta Gerwig's toy fantasy and Christopher Nolan's fact-based biopic as a sign that moviegoers are investing more in these original summer films than in sequels like Indiana Jones and Dial of Fate, or the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible series — both of which had lower-than-expected opening weekend box office performances. When this style is far less effective, it invites submission from the audience while leaving little substance behind it. Ludwig Goransson wrote a good score, but it's exhausting to use it all the time... Oppenheimer flips through historical events with a melancholy score.
