MASTER Matters – XR Technologies Enhancing Robotics Training in Manufacturing

The EU project #MASTER is about unlocking the potential of XR technologies for industrial training. The project launches a new video series "MASTER Matters”. In the first episode we meet the MASTER project coordinator Dr. Panagiotis Karagiannis from the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation (LMS) at the University of Patras, Greece who introduces us to the project. We learn about how the idea behind MASTER was formed and what it aims to achieve. The use of robots in #industry will be increasingly enhanced with #XR applications, and workers must be able to understand both technologies and use hybrid solutions confidently. Achieving this is a challenge that education and training programs must meet. The EU project MASTER looks at the intersection of robots and XR and intends to shape the future of industrial training with XR. We wanted to combine our experience on XR Technologies with the education role that we have as a university lab, as well as to share our knowledge gained from the years of experience in human robot collaboration and interaction. The challenge we identified was the lack of innovative education tools in the factories, as well as a shallow knowledge curve that exists due to the use of obsolete training methods. What we wanted to offer is an innovative alternative that will create a steeper knowledg
e curve, be financially sustainable for the industry, and, of course, be fun for the trainees, due to the gamification characteristics the XR environment inherently possesses. The envivisioned impact we have in the MASTER project is twofold. On the one side, we want to engage technology providers to create new tools in the XR environment that can be used to create education scenarios. On the other side, we want to engage education institutes to create innovative education material using those to
ols. This is something that is addressed by the two Open Calls that will be launched in the next two years, respectively, as well as it is addressed within our consortium through our activities. MASTER is standing out due to the holistic approach it has. There are two parallel roads that are focused in this project. The one road is focused on the development of XR Technologies that requires to create new training material, and the other is the actual development of this education material. These
roads will be paved, initially, by the partners of the consortium, and then we will invite external organizations through the Open Calls and, based on the FSDP schema, to guide them and follow us on these roads. The Teaching Factory Competence Center will be there for everyone, validating our steps and showing that we are heading towards the correct direction. Thus, we're seeing the MASTER project as a holistic process that eventually will bring XR technology into the manufacturing training dom
ain. We strongly believe that education is the basis of human development. And as our civilization evolves, so should the tools that we are using. Thus, we should be more user friendly, more intuitive, more interactive and help the trainees engage as many senses as possible and merging them into a unique learning experience with the final goal to learn more things in a shorter time period. Currently the manufacturing training is based on slides and workshops in small groups of people. In any cas
e, we don't want to remove the traditional forms of training. What we want is to complete them and enhance them with new technologies. We want to offer the necessary tools for the teachers to give their message to their students in a more easy way, in a more efficient way. Thus, we believe XR Technologies is the best way to transfer this knowledge, since this can help a teacher engage with their students in a virtual environment, offering more interaction methods, but at the same time keeping pi
eces of the current material. My personal expectation is to attract as many SMEs as possible. But, of course, other organizations like large industries, research institutes and so on, to join the initiative and build on new technologies, leveraging, of course, our platform to address their technological and industrial requirements and save the future of the training and manufacturing.
