My Thoughts On Russia/Ukraine As A Russian Immigrant

GlobalGiving's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/ukraine-crisis-relief-fund/ I was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States when I was 6 years old. My parents wanted to give me and my sister a better life, and despite taking the incredible risk of moving to America without speaking a word of English, they were successful. I'll forever be grateful to my parents for what they did for us. That being said, as someone who still has family in both Russia and Ukraine, we have been struggling through a variety of emotions as so many Ukrainians and Russians suffer because of this war. when i was six years old my family and i escaped from russia and came to the united states as refugees today i want to share that story and talk about how those experiences shaped my feelings on the current ukrainian russian conflict where i still have family living to this very day [Music] being that i was so young when we left russia i don't have a lot of memories as to what my feelings were at the time what i even knew at the time but as i became older i had more questions for my family i rep
eatedly questioned my father why did we leave russia why did we get refugee status and he consistently told me the same points one it was the political corruption i mean money runs the world in russia bribery was rampant especially within the government after the fall of the soviet union my father told me that the economy was literally up for grabs by the oligarchs there certain individuals gained huge economic power while the majority of the people were living paycheck to paycheck were even una
ble to make ends meet and were starving i find my food in the bin he cries why was i born for what reason second was the anti-semitism aspect my father born in ukraine is jewish in russia there was anti-semitism that was growing and he felt it economically he felt it even throughout his education process and the final thing he was worried about was what would happen to me and my sister he saw crime was at an all-time high he saw the economy was collapsing he saw that the education system was suf
fering there was so little money being put towards the future of russia and he became genuinely worried turns out he was right about almost everything 25 years later the risk that he took well him and my mom took to get me and my sister here has paid off and i owe them a debt of gratitude for completely changing my life [Music] the russian forces came in broadly on three fronts from the north from the south and from the east when i talked to my father about this the anxiety that he has the panic
attacks that he's developed as a result of watching ukrainians suffer watching russia unprovoked invade ukraine russian rocket launcher grad strikes hospitals schools kindergarten and apartments of civilians where so many families are related ukrainian people have family in russia russian people have ukrainian family members and the reality of causing these countries to go to war for no reason i don't mean there's no geopolitical discourse that is real it is real and there are disagreements but
war is never the answer [Applause] [Music] for the russians that are out there that are protesting the war that's that's the strongest level of courage i've ever seen because to stand against a corrupt government to go in the media and hold up a sign to go onto the streets and protest where it's against the law to do this to speak out against your government is really a thing of beauty like i stand up with those people i want to thank those people for fighting against their own government for t
he people who aren't speaking out against it i'm understanding as well the russian government the ones in power do a really good job at having a choke hold of the media of controlling the state-sponsored messages that people see they've confused the russian soldiers into believing that there's nazis in ukraine this is a country where the president of ukraine is jewish he's had family members die in the holocaust how can you say you're invading a country to rhythm of nazis when the person in powe
r is the opposite of a nazi no relief in sight for the city of mariopol where more than 100 000 people are still trapped innocent bystanders are suffering soldiers that are merely protecting their own homeland are suffering the economic sanctions are not only destroying the ones in power and the oligarchs and hurting them but they're also hurting the everyday people one resident svetlana purchased more than 20 pounds of sugar in the city of vladimir an hour away so i'm hopeful that there's some
sort of diplomatic solution in the future and while my responsibility right now is to my patients and the ones that i take care of in the hospital i do want to do something for this war there is a way for me to support ukraine as many of you know i have an upcoming boxing match that was recently announced against idubbbz every dollar that i'm going to earn from that boxing match i'm planning on donating to the ukraine crisis relief fund hosted by global giving i've done a lot of research on this
foundation it has four out of four stars on charity navigator my patreon community recently donated almost six thousand dollars to this organization they have a goal of raising 20 million dollars having already raised 17 million dollars also all the proceeds of this video all the adsense revenue will go to the ukraine crisis relief fund i'm also making this an official charity video where you can donate um anything you can donate matters to the russian leadership and politicians please end this
war there has to be a diplomatic solution here and to the ukrainian people know that we stand with you thank you for watching

My friend is half Ukrainian and half Russian he has been crying alot and to see what he is going through is tough so I’m going to send this to him thank you doctor mike

@VadymVus

I am a Ukrainian village family doctor, Vadym Vus. Four of my daughters are your fans. They had to be evacuated before the threat of Russian occupation. My wife, nurse and I continue to work in the village. Thank you very much for your position. I wish you God's blessings and professional achievements.

@fear_not

I'm from Poland. I just watched this video and cried. One year later the war is still on.

@ambriel6139

I'm from Russia. I grew up in the 90s in a small town. There was no work there after the two city-forming factories were privatized and sold for next to nothing. And my parents really made a lot of efforts to ensure that I grew up in normal conditions. My family and I have never supported Putin. We never believed him. I went to protests several times before the war. When the war with Ukraine began, it was like a blow to the gut. Some of my friends turned gray in a few days. Some left, hiding from mobilization. My social network page was blocked by the Prosecutor General's Office in June 2022 for my anti-war position. Sometimes I have a strong desire to protest again, but I understand that most likely I will end up in prison after this. Thank you for not showing hatred towards Russians.

@Dudbuf

Im sure your father is extremely proud of you for all of what you've done.

@00kidney

Thank you for this video Dr.Mike. Living in Europe the situation is pretty tense even in the countries that are not directly involved. We are receiving many refugees from Ukraine here and what they have seen goes beyond my wildest nightmares. I'm praying every day for this situation to deescalate but news don't seem really positive here.

@teddyscloset9399

I am a half russian, and am fluent in russian. I have been helping Ukrainians move too my country with my mother, and it's geniunly heartbreaking too know that these people have had too leave everything they've ever known behind because of this war. My heart goes out too everybody affected by this war

@user-iz5fv9ld1e

Doctor Mike, you have no idea HOW IMPORTANT this video is. As a Ukrainian doctor who has seen so much suffering and who`s witnessed countless missile strikes, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

@sree7535

I study medicine in Ukraine. We got evacuated just few weeks ago. It has been a month already, and the kind of crisis Ukrainians are facing can't be explained. Thank you dr.mike for raising such charity funds.. this shall be a great help for Ukraine.

@paw_prints_in_the_paddock

Your parents are true unsung heroes. Their wisdom, foresight, and courage deserves to be celebrated. Thank you for sharing your story. ❤

@sommelier2667

Thank you so much for your help and not being indifferent to us! I'm from Ukraine, Odesa 🇺🇦

@Cesiumooo

My baba (at 92) just passed away, but she thought the war was so sad. She would cry whenever she saw Russian people fighting Ukrainian people on the news, and she would also remind us all how lucky we were to not live in Russia anymore.

@hithersstreams8716

A lot of people don't realise, whilst Ukraine is in war, neighbouring counties are at high risks to get involved, for example Poland, who is helping Ukrainian people, making Poland in high risk of getting involved in the near future.

@Alejandro-ki8mr

Seeing the man look in bins for food and asking why he was born brings tears to my eyes and so much pain to my heart. I know that footage is not current, but I’ve donated and volunteered many times in my life but it never feels like it’s enough. When I see this kind of suffering which I know is happening now, I somehow feel personally responsible for failing this person. I feel terrible that humanity has failed this one human being. Thank you Dr. Mike for sharing your thoughts and for sharing the charity you found.

@polinah94233

I left Russian when I was 18. Your parent's story is very similar to my parents. They couldn't leave Russian, but they've done everything in their power to get me out of there. They tell me every day, how happy they are that I'm raising my family overseas. Just like you, I have family in Ukraine. My hope is that I can go back to Kramatorsk, see my aunt again and help rebuild the beautiful town from my childhood. I am devastated by the actions of my country. War is never the answer!

@irynabzhezytska924

Thank you for supporting and standing with us!💙💛 You're a good person. With all due respect, it's not a "conflict", it's a WAR. Scary and bloody WAR.

@rachelrachel4922

This is the second time that a video of yours has brought me to legitimate tears. I felt so much emotion from these 5 minutes of you pouring your heart out. My family are also USSR immigrants, also partly Ukrainian (my grandma) and their choice to come here was the biggest leap they had ever made, and the most dangerous. They took the scenic route (as my mum puts it) to come to Australia. So this situation, and your video, hit extremely close to home for me. Thank you for talking about this. 💛💙

@joannaa0904

I’m Polish we’re trying everything we can to help Ukrainian friends. What you’ve discussed in this video reminds me of what my parents told me about communism times in Poland (before I was born). This war should never happen. It’s killing me to see Ukrainian people who lost everything. All because of one mad man. We stand with you Ukraine

@andreadavis9519

This was simply breaks my heart. I know I’m late responding/seeing this video but thank you Doctor Mike for your heartfelt message

@user-uf1qe6fq5t
