New day shelter opens Tuesday in Chelsea for migrants

In an effort to alleviate the migrant shelter crisis in Massachusetts, a nonprofit in Chelsea opened its doors on Tuesday for people in need of homes.

going to bring you a story that you saw first here on NBC Tim Boston a closer look at an effort to alleviate the migrant shelter crisis here in the Bay State a nonprofit actually in Chelsea is opening its doors today for people with nowhere else to go our Oscar Marg life for us in Chelsea Oscar good morning to you now we're sort of understanding here right there's going to be hundreds of people that are set to come into this shelter help us understand how the organization is going to manage all
of this well Colton it's certainly not what La colaborativa here in Chelsea ever expected they would end up doing to convert part of their offices into a daytime shelter for 200 people now today is the real test for them as they continue to receive these people and after weeks of preparations dozens of families aboard Vans and school buses finding new resit in Chelsea at lativa an immigrant nonprofit now turned into a temporary day shelter families in search of a home after leaving their home co
untries in the Caribbean and Central and South America like anyy who came from Venezuela 2 months ago with her husband and children following their dream of working in America for a better life the main goal is to provide a model that can be used across the state with different communities that can support real wraparound uh services to get families on their feet with capacity for 200 people lativa has opened their doors to provide more than food clothing and a warm place to spend the day we'll
also be providing Workshop opportunities trainings um uh classes English classes EOS uh uh computer classes um and we'll also be able to do uh excursions um field trips for the next 4 months the families who are staying overnight at another shelter in Cambridge will be brought to Chelsea every morning and returned to the night shelter after 5:00 p.m. lativa says it's receiving grants from the state safety net shelter program through United Way in order to help ease the burden on the other shelte
rs which the governor's office says are a capacity serving 7500 families something that any has been very grateful for it's been a tough Journey but thank God we're here and everyone who's received us have treated us like [Music] family no now we are being told by lativa that all of these people they're receiving all the migrants here already have work permits and so they're going to try to work with them to try to get them jobs now they're hoping to do this work for the next several months unti
