Okay, for most of us, Wi-Fi is … irritatingly
slow, and while we have the entire knowledge of mankind 30 seconds away, our attention
span and our patience are … too short, so what are the alternatives?
[Intro] It turns out that there is, and it's called
Li-Fi, and it is essentially smart LED lights transmitting data at up to 224 gigabits per
second, while regular Wi-Fi generally transmits at 600 megabits per second.
Li-Fi was invented back in 2011 by Harald Haas of the University of Edinburgh. B
asically,
the way it works is that it flashes on and off to send a binary code to other receivers,
and don't worry, the flickering occurs way too quickly for a human to perceive, so it
shouldn't be annoying at all, unless you have superpowers.
Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks. We only really have prototypes right now, and
they have trouble broadcasting through walls, and they don't work well when the lights are
turned off, because they kind of are the lights. On the bright side, though, i
t's featured
on Positive News, which means it's just a prototype, and more modifications
will be made over the next few years, but after that, we may see the start of a new
internet system that's up to 100 times faster than normal Wi-Fi.
