On February 20th, students, community members, district administrators, city officials, and teachers attended an all-day Educational Visioning Session hosted by ThenDesign Architecture at North Ridgeville’s Academic Center. This session focused on group collaboration as attendees brainstormed how the district's new high school would improve every student’s educational experience for generations to come.
With over 80 in attendance, everyone had a say in the activities. The new, +300,000 SF, 9-12 high school includes state-of-the-art academic spaces, an auditorium, and enhanced athletic spaces, replacing the existing 1960s high school. This new building enhances student safety and security while accommodating growth in the community and provides a modern educational environment that fosters student learning and collaboration.

[Music] [Applause] today kicks off what is
really an exciting time in North Ridgeville we are working together today with staff students
community members business partners parents to talk about what a new high school here might look
[Music] like educational visioning always lets us get a lot more specific about like a certain
community or certain School District everybody's different with what they're looking for with
their goals so this is a day that we just draw all of that information o
ut of everybody that
participates I think here in North Ridgeville the new facility is going to be a complete
Game Cher for our students it's basically a big brainstorming session to create the best
school possible because obviously everybody wants a new school but you have to get into
what does that exactly mean and that's what we're here to figure out out today today we're
just examining the different possibilities for the new building I'm very glad we got to do
um student and teacher an
d other academic um leaders throughout the district and bring them
together and form something that not only from a teachers or administrator perspective but from
students as well I think it's very helpful because ultimately they're the ones that are going to
be enjoying and progressing in the space even if you don't have kids yourself it's important to
see the value of education education is something that needs to be nurtured I mean kids don't
enjoy school so why should you buy another sc
hool exactly so they can enjoy it [Music] more
we were looking at what their core values were we pulled out some of the words within their core
values like inclusivity and service and community and then we asked them to think about how they
could organize their school to PR promote those values so that's what the adjacency exercise was
about students have a voice so I think it's very important that the students who are going to be
in the school provide their feedback on what they think coul
d help future generations of students
I guess I got to see a lot of new insights as to what can be added to the curriculum like
a bunch of in my opinion almost exotic things that I would never think about doing at our
current school I think that's really cool the opportunity to weigh in on how this school is
going to look how it's going to function within the community it's a great opportunity some
great ideas were exchanged here and it's going to be wonderful to see how the community Embra
ces
these ideas and we move forward with this [Music] project right now groups are looking at actually
arranging the spaces of what would be a high school and a very conceptual away a few things
that came up was that they need to have a variety of different spaces so larger group spaces for
teamwork and um smaller spaces for individual work and then just quiet spaces for students
who need quiet for testing and for study hearing from our students was an incredible experience
and just hearin
g from their perspective about their need for a space where they can collaborate
space where they can work on projects and Design hearing that firsthand I think is very powerful
some of that excitement I think was really just awesome to hear from our staff and students and
Community as a whole I think the thing that I found really impressive was just how Forward
Thinking everyone is on really looking at this as an opportunity to offer more to their students
to their Educators they're not li
mited in sort of what they're imagining which is an awesome
place to be at the beginning of a project it was very interesting that the students were
kind of leading a lot of the discussions within the small groups and that the adults around the
room were really paying attention it's great to have someone Empower listen because it really
shows that we are heard so I'm very happy that I got to do this opportunity and got to share
it with a bunch of my teachers and friends and everything so al
l right I do want to thank
the North Ridgeville Community you know it took some time to get here but the fact that
they have entrusted our Board of Education and our Administration and staff to ultimately design
a building that is not only going to impact North Ridgeville City Schools but the overall Community
we are all truly grateful and you know not every district has this opportunity and I feel very
fortunate to be in the position and to have the opportunity to work with all of our diff
erent
groups to really shape the entire future of North [Applause] reville [Music]
