[On the Haunted Shore - Caitlin Mulholland] The waves crash against the stone as you make your way down the peninsula. You jump between rocks that have been smoothed by millennia of erosion. Although assorted flotsam and jetsam wash up on the beaches of your village, this peninsula is always untouched. The people in your village often say that’s the result of the ancient ones lurking beneath the waves, bound to this plane at that peninsula. The winds whistle past your ears. Sometimes you think you hear whispers along the surface of the water. You aren’t sure if they’re truly there or if the wind and you neighbors’ stories are just getting to your head. You clutch your satchel a bit closer to your body, not wanting to drop it in the water. You doubt that you could work up the nerve to make your way out here again. Once you reach the largest and flattest stone, you reach into your bag. Pulling out some chalk, you start drawing your sigils into the stone. With each stroke, the wind gets louder, yet something seems to harmonize with it. Cleaning up your lines, you stand in the center of the stone. Time to see if the legends are true. ["White Mary", a short story inspired by Black Sam Bellamy's legend - Arianna Ferrara Gennari] Where do witches go when they die? Do they go to hell? Do they go to heaven? Or do they wait here? I'm still waiting. The mist is thick and cold, it surrounds me, it dresses me up in a white ethereal gown, it gives me the sweet illusion of a white bridal veil resting on my head. Is a storm coming? Tiny, little brackish tears fall from my lashes. I'm not crying, no... I am not giving up hope so easily. It's the sky, the heavens are crying on me. Do angels think you won't be back? I know you will. Mist on my misty eyes. The skies are silver. The clouds are one with the sea, and the sea is one with my cold, wet breath. Is a storm coming? Is the vicious sea forging a briny crown of drops on my head? A queen's bridal crown, indeed. Silver on my silver hair. The precious shadow play of the soft blanket of clouds paints my past on the heavens once more. Our past. The black ink of your name casts beautiful shadows on the whiteness of my soul. And once again, I see your darkness embracing my light. Penumbra. Twilight. If only you knew my womb has not always been this cold, Sam... Would you believe me if I told you that not an archangel came to announce anything to Mary, for the child she laid on the manger did not carry God's blessing in his flesh? In Oregon, there is a beach called Heceta Head and there's a cliff where a haunted lighthouse lies. It's haunted by a ghost named Rue. The beach always feels like this to me and somehow it's comforting at the same time that it is chilling. Thank you for this 😊
