Cinema is not a Job! I was wondering whether I would become an actor? My nose was criticized as a parrot's nose If you can perform, will you get the opportunity right away? He is unlucky... I don't know how will you get the chance? Still I have that hope... If you have more money, you can have a color photo We preferred to watch bad movies... I realized that I'm inadequate What was around me seemed like a different class of people He looked at me as if, 'You don't even know this?' It's not like
it didn't run well, it just didn't run at all! Hero is just a status! Whether it's Kamal or Rajini or Nassar he treated them equally I suffered a lot after making that film... I spent most of my life in fear... -Nassar sir, welcome to the show! -Hello, Shaji! In your 40 years of cinema career you have done almost 600 films in 5 languages You have started in theater and studied professional acting at 2 Film Institutes... It's an extra ordinary travel! Thanks, Shaji. -Your birth name was Mohammed
Hanif, isn't it? -No! My name is not Mohammed Hanif, my birth name itself is Nassar! Our father named us after the national leaders He named me as Nassar and my immediate younger brother as Ayub Khan He named my younger sister as Indira Moti Hassan Bhanu Our relatives were objected the name Indira As our father was determined to name us after leaders, he kept her name as Indira Moti. Following that he named my other brothers as Jawahar and Zaheer Hussain -So all are named after leaders? -Yes. Yo
ur father was aspired to be an actor, so he put in some effort-- No! He wanted to make me an actor but he never wished to became an actor. He would be happy to see me performing on the stage. You have told in interviews that you were not interested in acting as a child and started acting only because of your father's insistence. -Yes -Since he insisted, you become-- Yes, during my school days, when I was into dramas I was getting some privileges I was offered new clothes and kids' favorite round
shaped Britannia biscuits During the drama days, I used to get a handful of those biscuits daily. I can go to sleep without doing homework Due to these privileges I preferred acting during my childhood While doing drama, I can skip the last 2 periods of classes daily, for this only I was into acting. I heard that you served in Air Force too... Yes I was in the Air Force, I failed in PUC due to my playfulness So that, I can't complete +2. Our family was in deep financial crisis There was an unce
rtainty and my immediate need then was a job! One of my friends Stephen's father was in the Army. Following him, Stephen joined in the Air Force. Stephen used to share me about the daily routines and the facilities at the Air force. He was getting Rs 272 per month as stipend Further, at Air Force canteen they provide food at a concession price I have joined in Air Force 'cause, it was a permanent job & Rs 272 per month can solve most of my problems. But I must serve at least 15 years! Then only
I came to know about that my father had a great desire to make me an actor. -Where were you posted in Air Force? -2 GTS, Tambaram. Had my training center been somewhere else, I would probably have settled there As I was posted in Tambaram, I had a weekly off on Sundays -So you can visit your home? -Yes, our home was in Chengalpattu When I visit my home every week, my father used to insist me to become an actor As he insisted me rigorously, I came to act half-heartedly. -How did you left Air Forc
e? -It was very, very hard. I lied a lot like I was having heart issues etc., My in charge did counsel to me that why should I continue there. He explained me about what will be the future and assured that I can fly if I want Even after his constant advice, I have left the Air Force. As it was before, fear took over me at that time. I failed in PUC, and left a good job too Cinema is not a job, it depends on opportunity! Even if you reach the peak of success, again you have to wait for opportunit
ies. I'm grateful to my father about a particular thing... There was a classified ad on Daily Thanthi paper -Film Institute? -South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce My father told me to join in the acting course conducted by them. I was determined to avoid it, but he forced me to join in it. From that training institute where Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi were got trained Rajinikanth was in the first batch, Chiranjeevi and myself were in the last batch -After that the school was shut down -So, it g
ot shut down? I was wondering whether I would become an actor? There were several reasons, Being very thin was my main concern then -Mental block related with your appearance? -Yes You might have noticed me in Nayagan, in which I looked like a line-drawing -You were also criticized about your nose-- -Today, I'm known for my nose... During then, I was afraid that my nose would be a great minus You thought like that? During my school days, they used to call me as 'Kili Mookkan (Parrot nose)' You c
an't take it as a compliment when you were called as Parrot Nose? I was having a lot of negative thoughts, about my thin figure and my bent nose... Every day I used to travel 58 KMs from my home town to the training school -What was the course duration? -One year. -What about the course fees? -It was paid by my father. As each day ends, I passed the days with relief that the days to come will pass like this. Even then I had the doubt that would I ever become an actor? After completing the course
, again I had the fear that what will be the next? If I start to stay in Chennai, my father can't bear the monthly expenses They used to say, "You don't know when you get the chance, but it will come out of the blue" Still I have that hope... I used to travel in the shuttle train from Tambaram to Mambalam, to seek chance at production houses. -Acting chance? -Yes. During then we have to give our photos, it was way expensive to take a color photo. Usually we will have a black & white photo Since
telephone facilities were rare then, we wrote our address at the back of the photo After looking at my address they ask, "Do you expect us to come Chengalpattu to give you a chance?" Then I will say, "No need sir, I will come early in the morning" Further they will advise, "Staying in Chengalpattu won't work, so try to stay in Chennai" So I told my father, "I have to stay in Chennai and I will look for a job for that" Even then my father insisted me to knock on the doors of the production houses
. Then I happened to meet actor Rajiv, who was my senior at Film Chamber of Commerce He was working as a Captain at Taj Coromandel. During the meet he told, "Why don't you apply at Taj? I will try to get you a job" Following that I applied for the housekeeping job and got appointed as a waiter. I regretted getting waiter job instead of housekeeping job. I thought that housekeeping job means to manage the rooms in the hotel But as a waiter, I have to serve food like a server So I did complain it
to Rajeev, "Sir, I applied for housekeeping, but appointed as a waiter" Then he told me, "Waiter is a better job than a manager, I was also worked as a waiter" Further he said, "It's the best job where you can get handful of tips, don't worry" That's how I ended up there. I worked there during 1979-1982. I learned a lot there. I got paid Rs 370 monthly plus tips. -Your financial state-- -My financial was like, skyrocketed After 3 years my father started again,"How long will you be like that? You
wish to be like this?" He asked harshly, "Do you think I would be proud of my son washing dishes in a hotel?" Then only I realized that I had no choice but to become an actor, so I left the job. But I was literally crying, 'cause in 1982 you can lead a luxurious life with that Rs 370. When suddenly you won't get the money from tomorrow, then fear surfaced while thinking about tomorrow I spent most of my life in fear, I thought it was over then. I didn't know what to do then because I had nothin
g to do with cinema for 3 years Rather than I learned at the institute, I learned an important thing for life. One fine day I heard about 10 days workshop on film appreciation It was conducted by Film Society Movement & Pune Institute of Archives As I got 7 days leave I just went there. That's where I got to know the real cinema. In earlier days, family oriented films considered as good films and action films as bad films. We were compelled to watch good films, so that we were eager to watch bad
movies So I had a definition about good films and bad films. In that situation, I went to the 10-day workshop First day, they talked about a lot and I didn't understand anything. What was around me seemed like a different class of people. I felt odd among them. I didn't know what to do and I didn't speak to any one. I realized that I'm oblivious and I'm in a wrong place. The first film screened was An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge While watching it, I wondered how a film could be made based on
an incident without a story. Then my definition about film got scattered I was very aware of the shattering of what I believed as cinema. I realised that it was something else. Next I watched a Japanese film, which I did understand without subtitles After that movie, it was lunch break, but I couldn't eat due to the impact of that film Even though I didn't understand the language, it had the effect of a slap in the face I was inspired by an actor's monstrous performance in it. I was amazed that
how one can act like this? I asked someone near me, "May I know the name of the actor who did the main role in that film?" He looked at me as if, 'You don't even know this?' then he said "Toshirō Mifune". Later I came to know that the director's name is Akira Kurosawa. I was unaware of what is happening around me. After that I watched Pather Panchali and Ingmar Bergman's films I watched a lot of movies in that workshop and got to know what real cinema is, then I came to work You worked as a sec
urity guard-- Between my stints in both the Air Force and the Taj, I worked as a security guard. I worked as a daily wager at Chemfab chemical factory which was located in Vandalur There only I learned about Communism, labor strike, labor union... ...the difference between daily wager and permanent employee It was after Air Force. Let's continue about what happened after quitting Taj. I resigned from Taj on the same day when my father expressed his displeasure about my job Suddenly I had a thoug
ht about that 10-day workshop, which was conducted at Adyar Film Institute I had joined there with the expectation that there will be workshops conducted around the year But there I got a huge disappointment After that only I started to concentrate on acting career. That's when I got familiar with drama Later I got acquainted with 'Pareeksha' Gnani It was then that Koothupattarai was taking shape At that time, actors in Koothupattarai were provided accommodation, food and also a small amount as
salary. I thought it was good and asked my dad about joining there Then he insisted me again, "You should act in cinema only" But all my thoughts were on how to escape from cinema. Again I had to travel from Chengalpattu to act in plays. Those dramas and the world films seen in the institute gave me a clarity. It was only after that, I got into cinema seriously. K Balachander, who introduced Rajini & Kamal, also introduced you to cinema He introduced you with an impactful shot in Kalyana Agathig
al, as he introduced Rajini in Apoorva Ragangal. In the introductory scene, Rajini opens a gate in a low angle shot. But he looks miserable in it. But in your intro scene you come across as rigid as you kick down the door When we look at you see your intro scene, we can say that it's a sign that you are going to be a hero. You can say that. Hero is just a status! I'm not really interested in it I acted in a 16MM feature film named Panangadu before Kalyana Agathigal The length of this film is 2 h
ours & 15 minutes, technically this is my first film. -Who is the director of Panangadu? -Senapathi. Before that I had featured in a film titled Nijangal. -K.S. Sethumadhavan? -Yes. The film was mostly shot inside a bus, in which I had acted as a newlywed It was Arunmozhi who introduced me to KB. We met him at the sets of the Kannada remake of Iru Kodugal. He asked after looking me up and down, "What do you want?" I said, "I'm looking for a chance..." Then he said, "If you can perform, will you
get the opportunity right away?" I replied, "Sir, I studied in the Film Institute" After that his tone changed and he inquired about my studies He asked, "Oh! You did study in Film Chamber as well as Film Institute too?" Then he said, "Well, this is a tiny role, so I will call you during next project. All the best!" He conveyed decently that you won't get chance in this film Although I didn't get the chance, I had the satisfaction of meeting a director. Exactly 4 months after that I got a call f
rom Kavithalayaa, it was for Kalyana Agathigal. From there my journey of mainstream cinema has started. Kalyana Agathigal didn't run well, if it run well-- It's not like it didn't run well, it just didn't run at all! Even on the first day, the film didn't get attention. It brought fear again But acting in that film was a great learning! Even now I would say with pride... The professionalism of Balachander and Kavithalayaa Productions, which I have never seen in any other production company. They
value the importance of time and effort! As Kalyana Agathigal didn't do well... The film industry is steeped in superstition and continues to be so today If the first film didn't do well, they will be labeled as unlucky. It haunted me continuously. It doesn't matter if few of them say like that Wherever you go, they will say, "He is unlucky..." I acted in only one film and that was my identity. What will I do if you call me unlucky by then? I didn't approach anywhere else -Then I met Mr. Ananth
u -With KB sir? If we had any indifference with Balachander, Ananthu will be our savior Whether it's Kamal or Rajini or Nassar he will treat them equally. Now and then I used to dub for the movies produced by Kavithalayaa Later I got an opportunity to feature in Vanna Kanavugal under their production Vanna Kanavugal was a landmark film, which was made without songs in those days I got an offer in my friend Yugi Sethu's film Kavithai Paada Neramillai -Then I acted in Velaikkaran -It was your fir
st film with Rajinikanth, right? Yes, it was my first film with Rajinikanth -You had donned a negative role-- -Yes. -The first film I saw of yours was Velaikkaran -Oh, I see! You started acting with Rajini and suddenly acted along with Kamal often Really I don't understand this and don't like too... Whenever we talk about Kamal, we talk about Rajini Whenever we talk about Ilayaraja, we talk about AR Rahman Whenever we talk about Sivaji Ganesan, we talk about MGR This is the case in Vijay too. I
can't understand it yet. Each one is unique personality Many great artists are relegated to secondary level due to such comparisons. What did you want to be? Just an actor or a Hero? No! As for me, I wanted to be an actor and never tried to become a hero. But there were favorable circumstances kept coming I did the main role in Varavu Ettana Selavu Paththana and Magalir Mattum Then I realized that they were pushing me to the next level that as hero That was when I was adamant to make Avatharam.
It pushed me to a great financial crisis Following that only I decided to do any character. I suffered a lot while trying to merchandise Avatharam I used to go everywhere by sitting on the rear seat of a bike along with the film's album Due to that I didn't feature in films around 3 years. -If you became a director, you won't get acting offers-- -It's there All kinds of unprogressive approaches are here... I started acting again and slowly recovered from it. I don't regret not becoming a hero, b
ut I wish I could have been. I was asked in a college event, "You speak intellectually, but Rajini & Kamal have gone higher than you" The auditorium of nearly 1000 people were laughed instantly Then I said, "There is no much difference between us" "Everyone who knows Kamal knows me, whoever knows Rajini knows me!" "The difference between myself and them is..."
