For those wondering why Peter has an M14, I just want to remind you that Peter mentioned that he "stormed" the beaches of Normandy in 1958, and the M14 rifle entered service in 1959. It's possible that was a 1958, M14 prototype (Springfield T47) he was carrying.

I have a friend who barely survived fighting the donkey kong. He passed away a few years back, sadly. But he was surprisingly open to talk about his experiences because he felt that those joining the military needed to know the horrors of war.
Fun fact: the beginning of the Vietnam conflict saw Marine combat personnel use M1941 load carrying equipment. The only real upgrade was the M1956 magazine pouches designed for M14 magazines. So Peter’s load bearing kit in that cutaway gag is somewhat historically accurate.
It was cruel and unfair how we treated our troops when they returned for Nam. I do love to see how many people look back and wish we hadn’t.
