[Music] [Applause] [Music] that is as tough a sports loss as I've ever experienced in this town disappointing it stings I'm disgusted we all are we love this Philadelphia Phillies team you can start with Kyle schwarber to Trey Turner to Bryce Harper to Nick castillos to Brandon Mar to all of them Zack Wheeler Aaron Nola the manager we love the team but guess what they failed to perform to the expected level you know what that's called in sports it's c-word in sports they no one likes to use it b
ut that's what it was they failed to perform to the expected level they had a two games to none lead and then were outscored and the next four are out pointed uh four of the next five games they lost two one1 lost two and now their season is over and um I'm just stun I would disappointed disappointment should be the word because this is a team that this never should have happened Never Should Happ game three out in the desert that's where it all started for this team that's where the downfall st
arted and by the way you could sit there and say we're better than the Diamondbacks you're not you just lost four out of five to the Diamondbacks in a row I mean that that's a situation that's no good as Ben would say number one you star the Stars you just brought up the Five Guys you just brought up the guys that the Phillies have brought in to win World Championship which include schwarber Turner Harper real M and castios one for 17 last night you ready for this y two for 19 in game seven of a
n NLCS it's un you can't have that Nick casianos he disappeared Nick c not really sure what happened him one for 20 he hit a home run in game one and then 0 for 23 after that it's a batting average of 041 Ben your thoughts on this one it's a heartbreaker I think that's goes without saying it's an understatement um it's just I I'm in shock like you said Michael I'm in disbelief and just it feels like you had your heart ripped out I mean first and foremost we're fans and secondly you know we want
this team to to do well for for the city for their sake for everyone's sake and have that chance to get on to the fall classic like they did last year that now you realize why it's so hard to get back there it's one thing to get there once but to get back there it's just you don't see it a whole lot and uh out the Diamondbacks outplayed the Phillies that's the bottom line they they were better offensively they played better defense they ran the bases better and their Bullpen was better so they w
ere better Ruben those red Pinstripes have run through your veins since you've been a little boy and uh and and to see this I know you're as stunned and disappointed as as everybody out there um how does something like this happen it it just seems like they took it for granted being up two to nothing we all thought slam dunk they're going to the World Series well it's tough to win Michael and and this is a perfect example as to why I mean it takes a lot of things to happen to have success and th
ey were basically out baseball by by the Diamondbacks um in in almost every aspect obviously the the Phillies have a lot of power and can drive the ball out of the ballpark but if you're not driving the ball out of the ballpark you also have to play good sound fundamental baseball you have to drive in runs when there's Man On Third less than two outs you have to move Runners you have to do the things that are necessary to score runs and they did not do that the Diamondbacks did and to the Diamon
dbacks credit that Bullpen was outstanding the entire uh series they held him down I mean five innings uh what were the numbers I mean five in one hit two walks and four strikeouts they basically blank them and and you know that's you know you got to give you got to give Tory lello and you know that that whole staff a a whole lot of love because they basically out baseball the Phillies and uh and and and again it's tough to win we're all disappointed uh but I feel like um they had opportunities
as Ricky said to put this thing away they did not do that and when you don't do that and a team gets hungry and a team is playing for basically they're they're you know they they sort of did the same thing the Phillies did last year to other teams and uh now they're going to the World Series so that's off to them and to be honest with you at this point there's no no reason to be mad it's over the whole thing's over I mean it's I mean we all know it right in you know at the snap of fingertips eve
rything just ends that's how abruptly things happen here it did it just ended yeah you could be you could be you could be whatever you want right now people are I I mean I you like I like I pointed out the big guys did not show up the last couple games they show up this this is not this is not ending it's take the World Series how how they didn't show up and by the way you can't be mad I think the anger will come maybe later now there's Devastation there's disappointment at their shock but belie
ve me when you look at Kyle schwarber Trey Turner Bryce Harper Nick castios we're leaving out JT real M cuz he had some hits here but the last the big four go quiet in the last two games the bottom Line's the bottom line one for 28 in the last two games schwarber one for three Turner 0 for four Harper over casos oer and look at runners in scoring position where you really need to make your hay 0 for one 0 for three 0 for two 0 for one you can't have that these are your big guns these are your st
uds these are the guys look I'll go for what you said in the pregame show Ricky said if you have two pieces of paper and you just have the guy statistics on them and you say which team is better it's it's no contest the Phillies are better but they're not better no because number one the Phillies were out coached they were outplayed they were out everything out pitched like Ruben said the bullpen was better for Arizona everything was a little better they got aggressive they came here stealing ba
ses as a matter of fact Arizona now when they score first are 6-0 in the postseason and when they steal a base they are now 6-0 in the postseason so it's all about doing some little things I think Ruben's 100% right this team was onedimensional you hit the ball out of the ballpark you're going to score a lot of runs it's that simple but guess what there was a formula against Bryce Harper there was a formula against Kyle schwarber and that may be pitching around them guys a little bit maybe tryin
g to make other people hurt you a little bit and it didn't happen and the main culprit in this has to be Trey Turner mhm you would you would think try to put down a bunt yeah they found a formula a recipe to to blank the Phillies it's do not let Kyle schwarber beat you do not let Bryce Harper beat you we heard Merl Kelly say afterwards last night I don't care if I walk those guys four times each I was not going to let those guys beat them um I was surprised later in the ball game those they had
a couple couple pitches to hit um you know they didn't come through we're not we're not used to seeing that at of especially out of Bryce Harper but they found a recipe they stuck to it and they played Better Baseball than the Phillies let's go to the clubhouse now here's Rob Thompson post game uh Rob what did you see from the bats tonight in the last two nights was this more about the way Arizona attacked you and what were the Diamondbacks able to do that these previous teams weren't this month
yeah I think I think I think they ped very well and first of all congratulations to Tori and his staff and the and the Diamondbacks it's that's a good club and they they really played well you come in this building and beat us twice in this type of atmosphere you're you're doing some things right so um but they pitched well they really did um you know fought he backed it up what he did over in Arizona he pitched well and their Bullpen did a great job we had some opportunities one for 10 with ru
nners in SC scoring position but that's that's baseball that stuff comes and goes but uh I'm proud of our guys they they um they never gave up uh they fought like hell right till the end and I'm proud of them we're all disappointed but um you know um they played hard and and and that's all you can ask really on the right side towards the middle Rob what do you think happened in this series with Nick castios that he went from scorching hot kind of the polar opposite of that it's that's Nick I mea
n he he's uh you can't from day to day sometimes you know um he might strike out three times one day and hit two home runs and X that's that's who he is and and uh you know it's just more about staying back and trying not not to do too much it's the same thing I say about him every day when you know we has a bad day but um but he carried a there for a bit and uh he's he's a really good hitter and I'm I'm glad he's on our side Marcus in the front left a couple things Rob um you're one through thr
ee hitters I think were one for 18 last couple of nights I mean your team is built to to score in those spots can you address that and there were several spots where you could move Runners you know Fly ball scores from third that sort of thing it didn't seem like your situational hitting tonight anyway was where it needed to be yeah they they pitched those guys really well and um and that's the and flows ofit of offense you know it's um gu people aren't going to hit every single day of the seaso
n it's just not going to happen so you know other guys got to pick it up other guys got to get it done and um you know you got a pass a baton and and move move people up and get people on base and and put pressure on people we had some people on base tonight we just you know we couldn't get the big hit down here in the front on the right right with The Bases Loaded in the bottom of the fourth and you had roas up there was there any thought of maybe pinching with somebody or or doing something we
ll it was kind of like the situation last night only this was earlier in the game um they had man to ply up so in order for me to get the right matchup I would have had to use two players cuz I bring cave in they bring man toly then I got a pinch up for cave and in the fourth inning we had the lead at the time taking your two out taking your best defender out of the game uh and and wasting two players I just didn't think that was the right time Paul on the left uh Rob obviously second year in a
row a disappointing ending just how tough is that what was the message you shared with the guys just that you know I'm that I'm proud of them and um you know those guys they prepared and they competed every day this year and and we had to go through some some some tough times you know we lost Rees and spring training um but they kept they kept when we lost some pitchers during the course of year but they kept grinding they kept fighting and I'm proud of them for that I'm proud of this group that
that our front office has put together because they're talented and and they got great makeup and and they're great to be around um I love them all I really do um so it is it is disappointing but you know it's it's tough to get back to this position two years in a row it is um but they fought like hell to get here and uh you know we came up short and that's baseball sometimes ree obviously I know you've been focused on the games in the world series but Rees and Nola there's some decisions to ma
ke this off they've been such a big part of this team this core for a while just where do you guys go from here and what do you say to those two guys on a night like tonight where you don't know what the future holds yeah I I you know I'm not really a part of that uh per se so um but I those guys are are Phillies to me you know you know they came up through the system and and they've done some great things not only on the field but in this city and they've raised a lot of money for a lot of peop
le and and they're they're great people and I love them um what happens in the future I'm not sure but I will stand touch with them for sure right in the middle on the left side hey Rob um a couple things one you know you talked a lot about this group and getting back here and you know so often teams are judged on you do they win it all or do they not win it all but with playoff format being where it is now do you view the last two seasons collectively as a sign this team is built to win in Octo
ber having won so many series or is it still just about are you getting that final out in the World Series well it's always about getting the final out in the World Series but we're we're built for for October because of our starting pitching because of our offense and um and we have a good Bullpen now some sometimes those areas break down a little bit but uh we've got a good ball CL Club but our goal isn't to get to the playoffs our goal is always to win the World Series just in terms of Zach w
heeler and what you got out of him tonight came me through when when you made that decision what that conversation was life and what you were looking to get from him that he was going to pitch tonight uh that was last night after the game and he came in and um he said I'm all in on on tomorrow this is my side day and I said are you sure and he said absolutely I'm all in so um you know got to about the 30 pitch mark and that's like his Bullpen number um so then you take the intensity of the game
and the three ups and add so that's probably more pitches than 30 uh and I didn't want to take him any further because I don't want to hurt that guy in the middle Rob where do you think the momentum in this series kind of Switched cuz through the first two games it felt like you you had all of it uh yeah I you you'd probably say the first two games in in Arizona but then we won game three in Arizona so um you know probably the fact that they got the lead in in the game first game back here proba
bly change the momentum a little bit they started to run a little bit started to put pressure on us and uh you know they started playing their game and they did a good job with that so uh I'm not exactly sure but you know but it did change we'll take two last ones for Rob on the left side of the middle uh coming into this playoff a little different than last year when you were the six seed and kind of playing with house money to some degree uh how do you feel like the weight of like the pressure
the expectations particularly after you guys went up 20 in the series affected uh the team I don't think it affected us at all really truthfully I you know I think these guys were laser focused on every day um coming to the ballpark not really thinking about where we're at in the series whether we're up we were down um these guys are really um a focused club and and they they really think dayto day as opposed to long term so I I don't think that that had anything to do with it finish up with Ma
rcus in the front Rob last year was kind of a fairy tale you guys kind of came out of nowhere you were the six seed and you know you you lose in Houston to a you know kind of a dynastic team but this year you were the higher seed you had a 3-2 lead and you lost the last two at home around shorter than last year is it does it hurt a little bit more is it more of a gut punch considering there were kind of expectations this time and it happened here yeah it's very disappointing it really is you kno
w and and I told the club if you asked me two days ago two weeks ago two months ago if we'd be going home tonight I would have said no so that's how much belief I have in this club so it's it's very disappointing but but our clubhouse those guys they have nothing to be ashamed of cuz they played their asses off all year for us all right Rob thanks very much to you thank you to your club for the last few weeks thank you Rob Thompson obviously disappointed with his team's performance disappointed
with the outcome of this series and the fact that they are going home before the World Series uh some would say his shortcom shortcomings are sticking with a lineup no matter what and and the big thing was Alec B and having Alec bow bat in the fifth position and not move him out of there was was there anything else in your view and how much did keeping bom where he was your stars did not hit I mean the bottom line is you you you you want to try to sugarcoat this some other way with Alec B Alec B
homered today all right so Alec B accounted for that run and he scored the other run so I have no issue with what Alec B did today I told you there were two two different two different ways to look at the lineup when when we first started on the pregame now you go to the you go to your stars what did your stars do today name me a star that really stood out today Alec bone yeah exactly no that's not the point my whole point point though it's a seven game series I'm asking you is would they have
been better served have any better chance of winning in a game of inches by moving ball hindsight hindsight yes JT was in the number four spot at times during the series he hit some balls hard but that there's no telling what could have happened I mean we we could say we could have changed the lineup we could have done this and that you don't know how they would have pitched certain guys at that I just see what Tory lvll did and he moved guys around he moved guys almost every single game to reac
t to what the were doing the reason the only reason why he changed those two was because there were lefties versus righties that was the only reason why he changed the lineup it would have been a same against lefties right he did it in the Miami series did the same thing yeah this series was lost the Phillies in the first two games here at home they kick butt yeah they had an approach they had a game plan they stuck with it they went to Arizona in games three and four and they punted they punted
that's theot they laid a goose egg they thought the series was wrapped up and I never thought it could happen with this team that they would get complacent and I saw that in games three and four they played bad baseball it was sloppy baseball they played bad defense they didn't get clutch hitting and they they punted it was that was plain and simple it's okay will get them tomorrow which they did in game five and then we have two games in hand back at at home where we don't lose well you know w
hat they lost and that's where I think the series was really lost games three and four it just it it was it was not pretty baseball and and the baseball guys I think came back and got them Crusher here's Kyle schwarber postgame in the clubhouse look you guys late there but just took a l that team just kept coming and coming and coming at you yeah they played great baseball um playing simp they uh they beat us the series and you know there's no U you there's no way there's no ways around it and u
m you know it's definitely a uh everyone's got a a sick feeling in their stomach you know uh it's it's not the way that we we pictured this thing ending but um you know it's a lot of things to look back on but you know it just I'm sure this isn't going to sit right with a lot of guys and you know we're going to have to you know make sure that we do everything in our power in this offseason and um you know to to make sure that we come out we you know we know it's going to be a challenging tough y
ear going into next year but you know try to Envision ourselves getting back to this spot and making sure that doesn't happen was there one thing or Ser things that just didn't go this team's right in this series yeah you know I don't know I mean you can look back at a lot of different things a lot of wh ifs and um you know I just don't think that's fair um you know the game's the game and you you got to find a way and uh even if something doesn't go your way get you still got to try to find a w
ay and uh you know it just it just seemed like we we you know we couldn't find a find the hit find the hole um you know and seemed like that they were able to you know kind of put the ball in play and find some uh find some holes and that's kind of the the the story of it so um you know they pitched well they they they played defense and uh they did a lot of things right so they they and obviously you know they won the series so um you know credit to them but yeah sicking feeling you guys felt t
he hurt last year in losing the World Series and then to get you know within one win of of going back you know how long the road it is you know is this one even harder to sit with given you had the two game lead coming back home you know anytime you lose is it doesn't feel it doesn't feel right and um felt just as sickening last year as it does this year um you know we were we were two wins away last year this year we were what five wins away so um yeah this you know it will never feel right you
know it it never does it never will and you know that's why you you know you just got to use this as as much motivation as you can going in the offseason to to make sure that we come in next year and we we're ready to go anything feel different pregame do you guys feel as Loose as as you always do yeah everything felt fine no there's nothing that you know there was there was Uber confidence rooll into the game and um you know that's been our conversations in in the clubhouse is that um we belie
ve in ourselves there's no doubt about it and you know we believe that uh we can we can you know we can freaking play with anyone you know we believe that we can go out there and and play great baseball and win a championship and we still believe that you know it didn't work out for us but you know we still believe that right now and that's why that's why it hurts I know it's fresh but what is it about this group this team that stands out to you that makes you think that you go into an offseason
you go in hungry that that you can get back to the mountain top again and compete again yeah you know I think you look at the the the the roster the roster construction one um there there's so much talent and you know there there there's great players all around you know offense defense pitching there there's so many good players and I think the special thing is that you know we're such a tight-nit group and you know we we play for each other we play for the city City and um you know that that'
s the thing that you know I think that's why you know everyone's obviously sick where you know you you you invest so much into the into what you do on a daily basis and um you know there's you know there's there's no um you know you just put so much work into it you know you spend more time here than you do with your family during the season and because you're trying to win a championship and uh you know that's that's why hurts but yeah this group is special and you know there's going to be a lo
t of pieces back obviously you know new season I'm sure they'll you know there'll be some different things going on but um hopefully we have a lot of the same group back and we can do this thing again the fans are leaving here disappointed but what can you say about what they brought for you guys not only this entire season but over the last two really yeah you know can't say enough um you know starting starting from from opening day to all the way through the season to where you know they were
you know selling out left and right and we were feeding off the energy and obviously coming into the postseason you know it's a tough place to play it it it it really is and um you know when you have you know 46,000 that are ready to rock and roll you know you want to get the job done for them and I you know obviously we didn't and um you know uh we want to be better and uh you know we're going to work we're going to do everything with our our abilities to make sure that we're going to be better
for this and um we can only say thank you to them and we we can't wait to get back out here next year obviously offensively in the series you guys were were so hot so early what do you think the the change was that things cooled off towards the back end of the series here um yeah I mean I I feel like you kind of look through the the quality of contact and there's still some good quality contact act going on but um you know you justess got to you know like I said you got to find a way and we jus
t weren't you we couldn't find that and um and there's no ways around it we didn't you know we just couldn't find it and uh you know it's not like we weren't going out there and trying to to stick to an approach stick to a game plan um you know we were all going out there and you know you tip your cap to you know how they how they pitched us and um you know we yeah there's nothing else that you can really say you know we were going up there with the mentality of you know we we're going to take o
ur approach we're going to take our bats and and and try to find a way to get get this thing done thank you

@jonathan6480

Remember: Philly teams break our hearts more than they are triumphant.

@dal0768

No one should be surprised, this is what this team is, home runs and not much else. Phillies are good when they are hitting 3 or 4 home runs a game… if not, they’re most likely going to lose.

@Calvin-xp4qp

Props to the Diamondbacks and management of their games

@beeeb7747

Problem started after Game 2 when Phils were talking about possibly celebrating the series win in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Stupid.

@mattiej2311

I miss the times when the only guy in the lineup who tried hitting homeruns every AB was Ryan Howard.

@wwilliaml619

The Diamondbacks are a tough, fundamentally sound, gritty ball club. Phillies better on paper but the D-Backs played tough and executed their game plan.

@bdoubleu6

The fact that Thompson said he’s proud of them and they never gave up is ridiculous they definitely gave up after game 2 there body language told the whole story they no energy no aggression the dug out was just dead

@AEM-le7uy

" they fought like hell right to the end " 🤣🤣🤣 hilarious

@williamf.buckleyjr3227

We were OUT BASEBALLED!! That's an excellent way to describe it. EXCELLENT way.

@Rean_Machine

Saving this for tomorrow. I can already feel the anger from Ricky Bo.

@mojorising5844

For someone who's been watching Philly sports for 50 plus years they never fail to disappoint.

@JNGaming3

Life long Phillies fan. They should be absolutely ashamed of that performance. I’ve never seen players choke more under pressure and it’s an embarrassment to the city.

@mattiej2311

"Nick strikes out 3 times, and the next game he hits 2 homers" you see the issue in the locker room rob? The fact that he knows his guys wont play small ball is an issue. Rob thompson absolutely needs to be on the hot seat.

@Hemingway-dq4fx

Got to hand it to Arizona, they were told time and time again that they didn't belong, and all they did was shrug and play gritty, resilient baseball. While the Phillies were running around showing everyone up and acting as though they were simply entitled to a world series birth, Arizona just kept their heads down and threw a big bucket of ice water on the Phillies. Let this be a lesson, never take an opponent lightly. They beat someone to get here, too. As for all the big name free agents, I never thought a team could win a title that way. A team needs to draft a core of players that have lost together. They need to go through the fire together. The problem with a free agent team is that most of the guys have gone through the fire somewhere else. They don't have the same hunger and drive. Arizona showed how a young hungry team that have come up through a system together can have an advantage against teams that may seem to be better on paper. And it is no coincidence that the two times the Phillies won the series is when the core of the team were drafted and developed by the Phillies.

@44excalibur

This is on Rob Thompson for putting Kimbrel and Kerkering in Game 4 after watching them blow game 3 and he should've known better. They win game 4 and they take the series in Game 5. Yes, the Phillies offense went dead in games 6 and 7, but the series should never have gotten to that point.

@lawrencesmith814

Not showing up for one game is acceptable two games is criminal

@julianc6863

2 years in a row of nothing offense. All Harper's buddies sucked including him. They all were 1-28 last 2 games

@stephen1004

Joel Embiid and Bryce Harper and unfortunately two stars unable to overcome their complimentary star players inability to show up when it matters most. Haven’t felt this distraught as a Phillies fan since 2011. God bless Jalen Hurts and hopefully this pain will lead to better things in the future.

@clarencedolan699

As a bitter Braves fan, this made our choke job feel so much better.

@williamf.buckleyjr3227

Three runs in EIGHTEEN innings at home is something that is barely excusable in early May.
