Playing an Oven Rack for a Movie Soundtrack

The oven rack makes interesting metallic sounds when attached to microphones. I play the oven grill for about an hour of sonic exploration and further manipulate the sound in the computer to make a soundtrack reminiscent of dark and scary movie moments. 0:00 Intro 2:43 Soundtrack Start 01:00:01 Outro There are items in our daily world that can be recorded and manipulated into something original and beyond the sample library limitations. I hope you find the creation entertaining and inspiring. I drew some images to accompany the video performance and computer graphics to set the mood in black and white. It is an homage to the avant garde sound inspirators of the 20th Century like Karl Stockhausen who inspire me to keep it weird, set parameters and uphold sonic integrity. Commenters in the past have said some of my work sounds like a David Lynch film. I don't really know where the inspiration comes from, but I like off the wall sounds as great music as music and have had the pleasure of creating sound design and mixing audio for film shorts, documentarys, and yes, even a B-grade horror films. :) Fans of Drums and Space, the traditional jam in the second set of Grateful Dead and Dead and Co. performances by Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann will also enjoy this jam. One final discovery is this ambient clip sounds interesting added underneath certain music as well. The nature of metallic sounds is a random harmonic overtone structure more chaotic and less controllable than traditional musical instruments. The unsettling dissonance, compared to normal music, can be utilized to reinforce an unsettled movie context. I did play with musicality, rhythm, pacing and dynamics discovering overtones, chiming and rumbling--striking, plucking and prodding the rack in various manners with fingers, mallets, brushes, wood, metal and a guitar pick. Dalesnale - Noise Ambient

(oven rack grill sounds) Hey guys, it's Dale. Today on the channel we are going to make an audio collage and we are going to use a singular source. We are going to play it a number of different ways record that sound and then heavily manipulate it into a long-play ambient collage. The item that i have chosen for this recording is The oven grill. There is an infinite amount of interesting sounds out there that we can use to record. And, there is an infinite number of possibilities in ways you can
manipulate something into sounding... (oven-grill sound) Rather than just going to the sample library and grabbing some other cool sound that somebody else recorded then manipulating it... Why not try making your own sounds. It will be unlike anything else anybody does. If you take your oven grill and you hook it up like this you are going to get a different sound than I got. (oven rack chiming) I am going to attach these, maybe I'll use a rubber band so that there is direct contact with the mi
crophones. We are wingin' it folks. But I think it is going to be super cool. That is what audio is. It is a little bit of experimentation every time. If you do the same thing every time, you will never make new discoveries. That's not to say that if you don't have a workflow that is tried and true you won;t get stuff done, but it's fun to experiment and try some different things. (oven rack sound) A little bit about metallic sounds... they have a different harmonic structure than most musical i
nstruments do ...as far as the upper pieces of notes they emphasize. So with a normal musical instrument it will emphasize the root fundamental note of the sound and then an octave up, and then a fifth above that, and a fourth above that, and then a major third above that, and so on. How those partials stack is what makes the tonality of say a flute, or a organ, or whatever... ...a guitar. So, with metal it is a little different. The structure of the harmonics is a little more chaotic and weird
and uncontrollable. So it is hard to make it sound musical. But sometimes that gives a little dissonance and a little edge or uncertainty to the sound that we sort of like. You imagine a bell has that. A bell is optimized (made) with bronze and that's what cymbals are also made out of. Let's just get to it. Here we go. I am going to start with my fingers. Dale, you're definitely a Connoisseur of Musique concrète. I LOVE IT! It reminds me of the days when I would play for hours in front of an ARP 2600 and an oscilloscope.

@triciaberkow810

You are soooo creative Dale

@Sopalida

Absolutely FABULOUS. This goes way beyond banging pots and pans on the kitchen floor as a toddler. Too fun !

I SIMPLY LOVE IT!!!!!!

@queen_in_yellow

Great for when you're reading a horror/ thriller

@irtopippuri

This is amazing. You should make a 10-hours video of this for good sleep in the night.

@HugoBass83

Always thought that metal was chaotic! xD

@jackwilliams7193

this was a really nice thing to leave playing as my house got dark, thanks

@w032182

I don't think it's possible to watch this video and not want to be the one playing the oven rack. I envisioned myself pushing Dale aside and saying, "okay now it's my turn." HA.

@georgieprice7693

Let is very clever.

@SchoolBusTalk

Oh man you got your Micky Hart going on!

I've fallen asleep to this 3 times and still can't decide whether it's good for it. The ambience is nice, the actual "notes" can be a little jarring.

@wilieu

I make music like this :D Great vid ♥️
