Portrait of an Artist | 장재민 작가 (JANG Jaemin) | Documentary | Korean Artist | ENG

Artist Jang Jaemin 2024 Line and Smoke, Hakgojae Gallery, Seoul, Korea Jang Jaemin’s paintings are like tranquility at the moment heavy rain subsides. Clearing away the damp atmosphere, I recall the movement of sight proceeding towards the object. The persistently gazing eyes, shifting directions every moment, an obstinacy to seize the vestige of the vanishing sense. Jang’s works are paintings, more in the gestural sense, rather than the name of the object itself. His picture screen does not specify an ending and ardently embrace the vestiges of physical rhythmic movements. The landscape that has gone through a filter of the body is arranged in a new order. Perspectives get disarrayed and forms, distorted. The physical and mental distance from the object endlessly gets readjusted. Each time an identity is tracked, an unknown blankness appears. The picture screen filled with boisterous brushstrokes soon becomes desolate. Here is a world where the afterimage is remembered more clearly than the original. Previously, I used to conduct field surveys in various domestic regions, using the sources obtained from there as reference for actual scenes in photographs, and continuing the work while recalling the places I experienced at that time However, recently, I have changed my materials, and I am continuing the work with scenes that are not actually existing, but imagined I had been stubbornly sticking to oil painting for a long time due to my desire to deeply understand the unique textures or proper
ties inherent in oil painting However, instead of relying on the volume and texture of oil paint, I started exploring materials that are a bit more matte and can produce results more easily, without depending on those aspects That's why I began trying out acrylic gouache, a relatively straightforward water-based material Drawing scenes that do not actually exist itself gives me a somewhat different sense of gravity as I create the artwork I often feel as though I am experiencing a different grav
itational pull while drawing Moreover, within the two-dimensional plane, I have been working with a sense of space or gravity that is somewhat different from reality The aspects of acrylic gouache, with its transparent layers overlapping, that connect well with those imagined scenes So, I focused on those parts and continued my work When I draw, I find myself more inclined towards envisioning the state of the space beyond the canvas, rather than just containing a subject or scene within the fram
e As a result, the artwork forms a sort of atmosphere, allowing the imagination to extend beyond the edges of the canvas That's why I curated this exhibition with artworks that have that potential I believe that the display of artworks in a manner slightly different from the typical physical timeframe of a wall such as suspending them in mid-air with their backs leaning against each other, aligns well with the fleeting moments of suspension and hovering that I experienced while creating the work
s This presentation method effectively conveys those moments of suspended states in the void I think this approach aligns with my intention to continuously depict states where the full three-dimensionality or volume is not preserved, where forms are not entirely maintained These states ultimately serve as the driving force behind my ongoing creation of art There are also aspects that connect with my desire to communicate indirectly and continuously, without strictly defining subjects My goal is
to become an artist who doesn't impose formal or genre constraints, but rather one whose work is eagerly anticipated for what comes next

좋은 영상들 정말로 감사합니다. 회화과 입시생이지만 나중에 꼭 작가가 되서 유튜브에 나오고 싶네요 ㅎ❤ 감사합니다!
