"Powerful Morpheus" by William Webb | OPHELIA: Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano & Tuomas Kourula, theorbo

William Webb's hidden treasure of a song is an enchanting - literally! - ballad and a poetic plea to the god of sleep and dreams, Morpheus, to let the world sleep: "Lovers in their stol’n delight wish it were perpetual night." We shot the video in the most fitting surroundings imaginable: the old Pharmacy Museum in Turku, Finland. After all, it was Morpheus who gave his name to Friedrich Sertürner's new invention in 1804 - Morphine... Performed by OPHELIA - Sanna Kola, mezzo-soprano, and Tuomas Kourula, theorbo by Giuseppe Tumiati. "Powerful Morpheus, let thy charms Wrap the world in slumber’s arms And Music’s soft delicious strains, Thou that both heart and care doth change With the sweet composed numbers, Rock each mortal into slumbers So no ear or eye shall know Where we are or what we do. Watching Circe, play and sing, touch your sweet enchanted string That Phoebus may in Thetis’ lap Outsleep himself but one hour’s nap; Lest his bright allseeing fires Rouse us from our wish’d desires. Lovers in their stol’n delight Wish it were perpetual night."

The mood is perfection. After listening, I felt a strong urge to go in search of opium. Alas, I could not find a peddler of such a substance. I returned home and played your song again which I found more soothing and potent than any artificial stimulant. Bravo!
