or what you got the IMs there's really nothing like it you know you got the sound of the cars the scene from The Stand you just take it all in every race is exciting yeah but there is so much more than just the driver of course so much going on behind the scenes that goes into making sure the car is perfect for racing and the main pipeline for those bright Minds who end up in IndyCar Engineers is right down the road here's 13 sports reporter Dominic Miranda oh this is what you see [Music] this i
s where it starts this is for those and uh Purdue University in Indianapolis and its undergraduate Motorsports engineering program the only of its kind in the entire country we're starting to burst at the seams where we're just getting more and more interest Chris Finch worked in IndyCar as a race engineer for nearly 20 years now he runs the program that serves as a pipeline to working in Motorsports former students now working for 32 of the 33 drivers and teams represented in the Indianapolis 5
00. we take the principles of core mechanical engineering ideas but we also give them the opportunity to kind of get their hands in the middle of it that's what those race Engineers do you know as they understand the engineering science but they're applying it to a you know essentially the car to make it perform like Josephine eskelson a 2023 grad of the program turned systems engineer at Brian Herda Auto Sport I'm vitals checking the car so I'm making sure that everything is running the way it'
s supposed to we're kind of in charge of all the electronics on the car we're kind of going through diagnosing what's wrong we try to fix it that sort of thing and then also during the race we are in charge of the fuel strategy so I'm the one telling Chris hey I think this is one we should pit and this is how long the pit will take a vital position on any race team skills learned here apply to the most competitive Series in Motorsports rewarding for students fulfilling for Finch I didn't have an
y major Motorsports interests but I heard about the program and it sounded really cool and I kind of just jumped into it and everything that I know now I learned from the program they're achieving their dream they're working hard and they're being successful and they're incredibly talented you know which is just great for 13 Sports I'm Dominic Miranda
