Russian leader Vladimir Putin delivered his annual state of the nation address this morning he spoke on his military's initiative on the war in Ukraine and warned the West against sending troops and this comes as Ukraine's military says it shot down three more Russian fighter jets today CBS News senior foreign correspondent Charlie Daga closely following uh this from Ukraine and is joining us now Charlie always good to see you um what more can you tell us about Putin's annual address this mornin
g yeah so Amry it's it's it's like a sort of State of the Union Address um but he's making the kind of threats that we really haven't heard for months uh for starters uh he said he put the Strategic nuclear forces back on full alert once again uh he was boasting about uh new weapons that he's developed uh he said that those were combat ready as in ready for deployment here and of course that's caused concern here however he also took aim at the West now he's saying that NATO is about to launch a
n attack on Russia uh he said that the deployment of NATO troops uh which is a possibility mentioned by the French President uh earlier this week would lead to tragic consequences now we should remember that President Putin is facing an election uh in two weeks time so this is a rally as much as anything else of course he's expected to win um but it's just another way of sort of drumming up public support so according to uh a Ukrainian Army official Charlie as you know forces have pushed back Ru
ssian troops from a village uh west of ab abiva uh what's the situation there now well Vlad it's it's really a back and forth tussle what I can tell you is the fighting is going on around those as those Villages and it's about as intense as anywhere along the front lines so the Russians captured AB Diva a few days ago and and actually they have been progressing Village by Village pushing further west now we visited uh shazi Yar which is north of abiva uh but it's really just a couple miles uh we
st of bakut I mean really close and the place is really getting smashed by Russian forces and it seems clear that they have their sights on taking that town next and that one's important however Ukrainian military officials claim to shot down three uh more Russian Jets today as Amry uh uh alluded to earlier um the Ukrainian military said last week that they shot down uh six Russian war planes uh just over 3 days now if that's true and we haven't had any conf if that is true we haven't had any co
nfirmation from Russia uh one more thing to ask you about Bloomberg reports Ukrainian officials are concerned Russian forces could gain significant momentum by the summer if they don't receive additional ammunition I feel like we've heard this kind of almost every season you know what I mean if we don't get it before it gets too cold if we don't get it before it gets too muddy if we don't get it before and Charlie had that in his piece yesterday the graffiti on on the side of a wall with with wi
th an you know imploring the US military to provide those weapons so the question is is help on the way yeah well I mean Bloomberg's reporting it we've been reporting it ourselves uh all week you only have to take a trip to the front line to see the trouble that they're in and it's serious they say stock piles are down to less than 20% of the high water mark a few months ago ammunition especially uh for artillery uh president zalinsky has warned and I think this is what the reports about that th
e Russians intend to launch a massive counter offensive by early summer you can see the sort of shaping exercis like adka and uh bakut that are already underway um now he's been trying to drum up support from European allies but they have fallen well short of uh like a million shells that they had promised by March um so he's pleading um mostly for that $60 billion Aid package I know we keep going on about it but he's pleading for it stuck in Congress to come through um you know as commanders on
the ground will tell you uh nobody delivers better than the Americans and they're more desperate than ever for that help all right Charlie Daga uh reporting from Ukraine uh Charlie thank you very much as always we appreciate it my friend stay safe

I’m so glad the adults are in charge.

@sabliqueshazaar6327

In a speech that lasted over 90 minutes, this is what you are reporting on? I listened to the entire speech in Russian, and I can tell you that among other misrepresentations (misinformation) that your correspondent made, is quoting Putin as saying "Nato is about to launch an attack on Russia." This is simply not true. What he said is that "Now there is even talk from the west about possibly deploying troops from some European nations in Ukraine." He never said anything about an imminent attack. Why are you doing this?

@samueljr.2026

The Nord Stream was the point of no return. The worse is yet to come.

@Bluemooque

The US is the only country to ever drop a nuke

@KeepingOnTheWatch

This is so common now. What should make the news is only when Russia doesn't threaten nuclear war.

@azdrifter3968

Of course they don't show us what he had to say, but instead tell us their spin on it and how people should think about it. Like our mainstream "news" has been doing for longer than I can remember now.

@nikolaym.7284

Putin did not mention nuclear weapons. He said: Those who want to send their troops to fight Russia in Ukraine must realise that we also have weapons that can hit targets on their territory.

@takenursht8701

We are not giving Ukraine anymore money while the us sets and suffers from open borders and fentanyl overdoses. Health care is broken and our government is currupt to the core. Inflation is beating the crap out of me and everyone I know.

@BonjourP

We literally said the same thing to the Houthis. Putin's warning was a response to threats that were made against his troops and his military objective.

@robertperez3736

Why don’t yall just play his speech with subtitles on it and let us make up our own minds instead of telling us what to think?

@mattatuckmanful

Cbs is dumb, its the supersonic missiles he is talking about.

@howardcf46

1.2B a month in 155mm shells. Maybe they should be more selective in their artillery strikes.

@marias5088

1:24 Having a hard time finding a shot of angry Putin to prove your point, CBS? I feel for you.
