My father used to say, The line between satire and stupitidy was very thin. If satire or humour goes a little to the side, It would become stupid. During my grandfather's time, there used to be a stable where horses were kept. Above that was a library, he was a great scholar. He used to live above that library. On my brother's birthday All the chefs were making food, There were cauldrons full different preparations. Suddenly the three storey building collapsed Thankfully the chefs were'nt hurt,
but all the food got wasted in the rubble. This three storey house was made by Saghar khayyami on my grandfather's land. Above my room, my three brothers live alongside their families. My father's real name was Rasheedul Hasan Naqvi Where he used to work, in JNU, that was his name, also on his passport. He started going by Saghar Khayyami When his brother, who went by the name Nazir Khayyami When he died, He wanted to keep a name similar to his brother's. Because his eldest brother, Mehdi Nazmi
sahab said "Now that Nazir is no more, you will have to take his place." Thats how he got the name "Saghar Khayyami He matched the surname "Khayyami", He put the name "Saghar" in front of it. Saghar in urdu means "Wine glass." Lucknow is a city that has not only gone forward in terms of evolution But also balanced its history. Which is why, where i am from, in Old Lucknow a colony called "Raja Bazaar" There poetry, the poetic language, mushairas and poets Had its position and environment. Also a
round that time "Doordarshan" used to broadcast mushairas and radios had them aswell Which is why i cant exactly tell when did you learn about Saghar Khayyami because it is the same question as "when did you grow up" Saghar khayyami's Shayari, and his presence in general had always been there. We used to read the name in newspapers, his poetry would often come up on doordarshan. whatever little i wrote, i didnt write during my father's life because, At that time i didnt find a lot of interest in
poetry. I used to read his poems. Here in delhi, Jamia used to hold a "Tamseeli Mushaaira" Where people used to dress up as well known urdu poets. Tamseel means "copying" My father's "Tamseel" would also be done there. But to do that, there was no one who looked like him, or appear like him wearing clothes he wore. One day i took initiative and approached them saying "I want to participate." And the staff of Jamia agreed. So i went up there and performed. People liked it. Because i remember a
lot of his Nazms (long form poetry) While performing, i sound a bit similar to him. My voice is also similar Obviously, the son gets his voice from his father. And his way with words was something i observed since childhood. So thats where all that came from. in any form of poetry, not only humor, Observation is crucial. This helps the listener relate to the writing. He feels that he has experienced what is being told. That is what appears good so he was considered to be very observant. There ar
e two elements in his poems that make him very evergreen. First, his poems have something called "sarokaar", or "everyday issues" these, he used to translate very well. Second, the issues with our society. some that has always been there and will always be, because our society progresses very slow in these cases. He used to tell this very well. for example, He used to talk about everyday issues like "inflation" summer heat, nowadays it is getting cold, he has a very popular nazm on winters, righ
t? I would call this a drawback of his. whenever he used to come up with something something he used to do was he used to write it on a piece of paper. Now that could be a small paper that comes in a box of cigarettes. The problem with that was, those papers used to get lost. A lot of his poems got lost with those pieces of paper. What he could remember exists, but a lot of his poems couldnt be published properly. His household was full of poets. His father was a poet, grandfather even his pater
nal uncle. Poetry was around him since childhood. But he used to be more interested in games. He used to fly kites from rooftops, play cricket in the streets. "Ishq Bazariye Patangbaazi" It is a very good poem. it describes the old school rooftop love very well. He must have had a girlfriend at some point. He did, I know about it. I didnt mind at all. I wanted him to fall in love with two or four girls. the more he will love the better his poetry will be. People from all over the world would com
e and study in Jawaharlal Nehru University Those people couldnt understand urdu very well. But when he used to recite his work and someone would not understand, he would explain the meaning of the words. He used to also sign the words for better understanding of the people. Every poet has his own identity, some are known for their writing, others are known for their way with words. For the new generation that isnt very well versed with urdu, a word will come up here "Khaame" means "Pen." He used
to say that if someone goes to heaven It would not be Hindus, or Muslims or any of the religions. the only community that would go to heaven would be humanity. This is a funny story. Someone's father in law died. My father went to give his condolences. He came crying and hugging "My father in law died!" Papa said "Stop crying!" "Remarry and you will get a new father in law!" his wife did not like that statement. Whatever extempore would come to his mind, he would blurt it out. He wasnt scared o
f anyone. The person who was crying himself started chuckling loudly "Rashhu bhai aapne kya keh diya!"
