Sitka School District--Stop-Motion Animation Youth Cultural Camp

Through the Youth Cultural Heritage Project Grant, Sitka School District Youth worked with culture bearers on Lingít language. Students chose vocabulary terms and sentences they wished to learn, and adults researched the selections and offered coaching. Students learned how to use stop-motion animation and audio capture tools to collaboratively depict the vocabulary and phrases. Students hosted a short film fest to premiere their videos to their families.

[Music] [Music] [Music] I always say about kids this age that I want  to teach them to utilize their iPhones iPads all this technology as a tool as creators  not just as consumers and so giving them the space and the tools to explore that  whether it's cultural their connection to place their connection to each other it  just it helps them build confidence [Music] we are focusing on Lingít language learning  through stop-motion animation and short form podcasting I think it's really amazing to w
atch  them go from I have an idea to developing a story creating a storyboard drawing the images and  then animating it and then they add the audio and they're like oh my gosh I just did this so  it's that's the best part for me is seeing that light in their eyes and they're like this is my  story and now everyone gets to see it so sharing their stories is kind of the the final piece  of what they get to do culture Camp I have been making friends while being able to do stop motion  animation wel
l I love all the people here and the arts and projects are really cool they've  helped me understand like what I can and can't do with all this stuff here and like what I can add  and maybe take away when these uh kids came here um I didn't know in when I met them they're  now just my friends and a lot of them well you should come here because you love arts  and crafts and um you've always wanted to learn um like Lingít language and stuff coming back  to this as kind of somebody who's more on th
e teaching side of things which is really  cool but it's just like such a reminder of like how important like culture  is to like kids confidence [Music] I think again it's it's really that it's not  about making one defined product it's really about making this atmosphere of exploration  where kids can really experiment and and take risk in a safe way and and try something out  it's exciting to see what they're interested in and let that student voice and student  interests lead the way and I f
ind if you do that then you excite them even more and then  at the end they feel really empowered so my hope is they'll take their skills that they've  learned and they'll continue to tell their stories and they'll learn more about animation  and it'll be exciting to see what they do [Music]
