Sofia – One of Europe's Oldest Cities | Travel Tips for Bulgaria's Capital

Have you ever been to Sofia? The capital of the Balkan state of Bulgaria is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city’s landscape is a blend of Eastern and Western architecture, from the Roman and Ottoman empires as well as Brutalist buildings from the Soviet era. YouTuber @Veneta Nikolova takes you on a walk through her hometown. What is your favorite European capital? 00:00 Intro 00:23 Brutalist architecture 00:56 The Red Flat 01:48 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral 02:13 Mineral Hot Springs 02:50 Vitosha Boulevard ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to DW Travel youtube.com/dwtravel Would you like to find out more about DW Travel? ▸Website: dw.com/travel ▸Facebook: facebook.com/dw.travel ▸Instagram: instagram.com/dw_travel DW Travel is showing you the captivating world of travel. Welcome to my hometown of Sofia. My name is  Veneta, I am a travelblogger and a YouTuber. And I'm looking forward to showing you  my favorite spots. So, follow me! My hometown was marked by its socialist past.  Because for more than 4 decades, Bulgaria was under the very strong influence of the  Soviet Union. It was its closest satellite. So, when you walk around Sofia, you see lots  of buildings that are grey, monumental, built in this typical Stalinist architectural  style, that is meant to la
st forever. So, if you want to know how ordinary Bulgarians  used to live back in the 80's, when Bulgaria was at the other side of the Iron Curtain, the time  of Gorbachev and Reagan, you're welcome to visit The Red Flat. It's in the center of Sofia. So you see. Young people, mostly foreigners, who have never experienced this period, they  have only heard about it, they just want to come here and to see how people used to live, what was their live. To experience what socialism looked like. I wa
nt to show you the most instagrammable  place in my hometown. Just look at this: This is the cathedral Alexander Newski. And just look at those domes. They're covered with pure gold and they're  shining like yellow suns across all the city. When you're in Sofia and you're thirsty, this is the place you need to be. You know my hometown has hot springs at the heart  of the city. And my grandma used to come here, almost every week from the other part of  Sofia. She used to bring lots of bottles,
because she was sure that this water  is magic for her rheumatism. This is Vitoshka, the most  important street in Sofia. And on the other side we've  got the mountain Vitosha, after which the street is named. Vitoshka is the  busiest street in Sofia. There are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants here. And in the evening: Stroll through Vitoshka boulevard and enjoy yourselves!
