Mark Bennett's Camera Crisis

1 year ago

oh boy today we have a fun one we have the  nikon z30 z30 is what i'm supposed to say because i'm canadian but i like z because it  rhymes in my alphabet and this is the sony z ve10 these are two entry-level level targeted at  the vloggers in the world but they can do so much more than that and here's  the thing i love them both i actually own them both but let's talk  about which one might be better for you oh and thanks to camera canada for loaning over  this canon r5c this has been a lot of f
un to test out i will do a video on that coming up soon  so this video will be about video i will do another video about photos so uh comparing the  nikon z30 to the zve10 in uh photo quality now both can take fantastic photos i find the  nikon is a bit better to take photos with but we'll do another photo video video so i'm  going to show you some side-by-side comparisons of footage and then i will talk about the pros  and cons of each of the cameras but let's start right away with the auto set
tings because these  are targeted they keep talking about beginners now see i think that that's a bit misleading  because you still have to learn how to use a camera when you're using these two they're into  interval they're interchangeable lens cameras and the sky is the limit in terms of quality that  you can get from these guys you can make them very professional workhorses for you depending on your  circumstance but of course a lot of new people will be buying these because of the price poin
t so  let's show you in all auto mode and then we'll get progressively better from there so this is the all  auto modes for both cameras right here we have the nikon and here we have the sony zv e10 the zbe10  is doing a sensible one over 50 shutter speed with a an f 3.5 which is the best the kit lens  can do the nikon while it looks better in the screen to my eyes is doing a 1 over 25 shutter  speed with an f 7.1 so hopefully in a firmware update they can figure out that they shouldn't  put the
ir shutter speed less than one over 50 when you're shooting video because it creates  that look at that static that weird blurry thing look at see the sony normal motion blur the that's  too slow of a shutter speed on the nikon but still the image looks pretty good this is just what  you're going to get if you take it out of the box put it in auto settings and press record like you  would use a smartphone or something like that but we can do a lot better than that even with the kit  lenses let's
switch over to some manual settings okay so now this is still with the kit lenses but  it is manual settings and uh my shutter speed is correct my exposure is correct and i'm using a  paul leeming corrective lut to make sure my colors are correct i'm using it on both cameras the  paul leeming corrective lut and as you can see the image at least in my opinion is far better  than the auto standard settings coming straight out of the cameras but we can still do better  than this what if we put a f
ancier lens on it's actually a pretty affordable lens but it's a  viltrux 13 millimeter f 1.4 that is available for both the nikon camera and the sony camera as well  i happen to have two copies right here let's check it out and now we have the fancier f 1.4 from  viltrox the 13 millimeter great focal length for vlogging which these cameras are designed to do at  least that's what the marketing says and here we have the sony same lens look at this image quality  you cannot complain about either
camera for image quality when you put on some decent glass i am  really happy with the images that i get out of both cameras that is why i purchased both cameras  huh looks pretty good i mean i know it's me in the frame but pitcher someone maybe not as handsome as  me it's still they'd still look better than usual so as you can see you can get fantastic image  quality out of either of these cameras and speaking of that studio i use the zve10 in the  studio all the time i recently just picked up
this guy so i don't use him much in the studio the  nikon z30 but but i just got them like this week and and i have been using them in the studio and  you certainly can use these two in the studio especially when you pair it with a good lens like  the viltrox so uh here's that and this is the nikon with the viltrox 13mm f 1.4 looking handsome  in the studio here call this handsome studios is what we should call this and this is the little  zv e10 with the viltrx 13 millimeter f 1.4 set at f 2. i
like about f 2 in my little studio here  now here is something that the zve10 can do that i like a lot and i use in my studio right now  i'm sitting very close to this lens because it is a 13 millimeter focal length but sometimes i  like to sit a little further back so what i do i turn on the active stabilization i'm not totally  in the shot here it's a cropping in on the sensor so you still get full 4k readout i almost lost my  little color checker but i get effectively extra length out of my
lenses if let's say i can't move  my camera i can't bring the camera closer to me well then uh i can just crop in and so for  instance i like to use the 16 millimeter f 1.4 from sigma a lot and that gives me about a 24  millimeter in my studio but where i have my tripod up it's uh more about a 35 36 millimeter would  be better so i put on the active steady shot boom there you go 35 millimeter full frame equivalent  focal length now the nikon does crop in a little bit but it's only about 10 so uh
this is just  something i like to use personally so i figured i'd tell you about it and as you can see you can  punch in a little bit but not that much so the zv e10 is great for punching in bad for outside  when you want to vlog and it punches in too much but when you can't move your camera and you  want some extra reach i like the zve10 for that now these things are great for the content creator  and as content creators we like to put them on selfie sticks and walk around and point them at  o
ur dumb faces and talk about our dumb things so uh let's see that in action okay so this  is lens stabilization zv e10 and the nikon z30 i'm trying to walk as smoothly as i can because  just lens stabilization is not going to give you super smooth footage but this is how  it looks now let's use some electronic stabilization now here you can see both have  cropped in but the zv e10 has cropped in much further and both stabilization should be  a bit better now with electronic in i find the nikon d
oes wobble a little in the corners when  you put on the electronic stabilization but let's see how it looks right now comparing the  zv e10 and the nikon but let's say you're using a lens like this fantastic filtrx 13 millimeter  that does not have lens stabilization how does the stabilization look if you just use the  electronic in the nikon or just the electronic in the sony obviously the sony is cropping  in further but i will use catalyst browse in a second but this is what you can  expect t
o see with a non-stabilized lens just the electronic stabilization someone's coming  up behind me pick up the pace pick up the pace and this is catalyst browse as you can see very  smooth because i just ran it through the program it's free program from sony because the camera  records gyroscopic data you can then use that to make gimbal like footage at a very minimal  crop 10 is what i use the nikon we are still over using the electronic stabilization because  it's the best i can do someone's co
ming it's children and i'm still walking very carefully  and that is mostly for the nikon's benefit because i could pick up the pace a little bit and  you'll see the nikon is shaking around a nice bit but the sony remains quite stable because  of the gyro data so as far as it goes if you're not going to use catalyst browse  you are going to get a wider field of view with the stability on the nikon however that  cropped mode looks a little more stable to my eyes so you know pick your poison or yo
u could  be like me and use catalyst browse all the time which i like doing now both of these cameras are  great in low light i did test with these cameras against the r7 actually and the  r10 from canon so here's that the dynamic range of both cameras is  quite good the zve10 it has the hlg3 picture profile that really helps  get the most out of that old sensor on the zv e10 and the nikon  actually hangs in there quite well with dynamic range i did an unscientific test  where i sat down and i w
as totally backlit and then i tried to bring back the image and the  nikon and sony did actually uh pretty well and a rolling shutter test  let's take a look at that so the zb e10 is notoriously bad for rolling  shutter whereas the nikon is doing a great job with rolling shutter well relatively  speaking anyway you can still see some but it's much much better than the zve10 especially  in 4k let's not forget about a slow motion test both of these cameras can shoot 120 frames per  second in 1080
so you want to check that out now and speaking of 1080 here's  a little 1080 footage from both cameras in case you want to use them that way now i think the nikon is sharper in 1080 both in  slow motion and the regular 24p it does appear to be a bit soft the zve10 so if you're trying  to do a lot of 1080 shooting nikon might be the way to go okay let's talk about some pros  and cons with this guy so the nikon this is the headline bad news is that it overheats in 4k  between about 25 and 30 minut
es consistently you will get overheating in 4k now in 1080  it runs for the two hours and five minutes that is allotted the battery dies after about two  hours and 10 minutes anyway but so you get 1080 footage no overheating for uh two hours and the  five minutes but really only about 25 minutes or 30 minutes in 4k which is a huge bummer this guy  as long as you have the high heat setting on and the screen open then he will last his full battery  which is about 90 to 95 minutes of 4k footage the
nikon has no headphone jack for monitoring  audio and the zv e10 does have a headphone jack there is no shutter priority mode in video in the  nikon but there is a shutter priority mode in uh the sony it has a 20 megapixel sensor versus a 24  megapixel sensor that's not really that much of a drawback unless you're doing some really heavy  cropping or you're printing huge you're probably not going to notice the difference and this thing  does take wonderful pictures but i'm going to list it anyw
ay the zebras are not traditional zebras  this one just goes you know from 0 to 100 so you know if your zebras are 70 that's 70 ire  whereas this guy is not using that same scale now you can figure it out and i have i'll do a  video on it uh equating the zebras on this to the zebras on other cameras and monitors and things  like that but still it's annoying to have these zebras the stabilization is not great on either  camera but the sony has the option of catalyst browse the gyro data and i thi
nk that is a big win  for at least me now while the nikon does give you a clean readout over hdmi if you want to monitor  it you can't do an overlay of your settings so the sony you can do that so a lot of people want  to see their settings on their external monitor when they are using it so that's a bit of a  bummer what's a weird quirk is the video only counts down from what you have left on your  sd card so when you press record this guy will just start counting up it's like oh you've been  r
ecording for 20 seconds at this point and this guy is saying ah you've got 20 seconds gone from  the 54 minutes remaining on your sd card it just seems very strange i wish it would just count up  in video there's no on-screen exposure meter so you can't tell this guy if you're in manual mode  you can see if the camera thinks that you have the right exposure by having 0.0 on there or plus or  minus depending on if you're over or underexposed this guy doesn't have that in video which is too  bad t
hey can both do webcam but the sony is just plug and play just plug it in and you can use it  as a webcam you have to use uh nikon software in order to use it as a webcam so uh that's good  for this guy and product showcase mode this guy just with the touch of a button you can hold  something up and then it'll get focused on right away see the canon r5c it doesn't have that  so i have to cover up my face and then it will go onto the product but with product showcase mode  if i was doing this boo
m it would go boom this guy he doesn't have that either so that's a nice  little feature for the content creator the option of hlg so you could make hdr videos on this guy if  you wanted on the nikon you cannot do that lenses this point is in favor of the sony for sure there  are these new fantastic aps-c lenses from sony themselves the 11 the 15 millimeter and the 10 to  20 f4 but then you have your tamron and your sigma and your viltrox there are so many fantastic  lenses for the sony aps-c sy
stem that are quite affordable and so many wide versions of lenses the  nikon you're just not going to find as many lenses as you will for the sony which is one of the main  reasons that i shoot sony mostly with both my full frames and my aps-c cameras now you can get some  nikon glass you get some nikon z-glass and the viltrx 13-millimeter and that might be all that  you need but uh certainly the lens selection has to go to sony so what about the advantages of the  nikon over the zve10 well erg
onomics first of all it just has a great grip it feels really good to  hold people say it feels good in the hand i don't like that expression it creeps me out it feels  nice to hold this camera it's got a big beefy grip now it is a bit bigger than the zve10 a lot of  people like the small portability size of the zve10 and i do too but when i'm walking around  for a long period of time the nikon is definitely an easier camera to hold in the hand and it also  feels better built it's just a little
sturdier and apparently has a little weather ceiling  and oh you know what i should just put that as another point little weather ceiling on this  guy this guy has absolutely no weather ceiling so you know ergonomics build quality weather ceiling  touch screen on this guy the zv e10 you can only tap to focus or tap to take a photo but this guy  right here fully usable touch screen really nice touchscreen very responsive love it very much  and not just uh to use in terms of touch it also looks mu
ch better than the zve10 so if you want to  get a better idea of how your footage is looking while you're shooting it the nikon definitely  is the way to go it's nice to see how your images will actually look on the back of a  screen the sony you're looking at you know just a garbled mess and and you have faith that  when you get home it will look good and it always does but on the screen itself it just looks like  crash just garbage here this this looks quite good on the screen so if you're som
ebody who's  relying on the screen to judge things i use exposure meters zebras all those things that's why  i mention them as good points for this guy but if you're just looking at the screen this is a great  screen it also has a more intuitive menu easier to use than the sony as we all know the old sony menu  which the zve10 still has is a little difficult to use i i am totally used to it now and i can fly  through the menu with this thing and you will get used to it but as a new user this one
will be a  bit easier to use the nikon has a minimum shutter in auto iso that is very helpful when you want to  take photos and you don't want your shutter speed going down a certain amount and since these guys  don't have ibis i want to set that at like say 1 over 250 as my minimum but the zve10 doesn't  have that so i can't use the minimum shutter and auto iso so i have to shoot this in pretty  much manual settings when i'm taking photographs whereas this guy i could put it in aperture  prior
ity set my minimum shutter in auto iso to say one over 500 and i know i can freeze the  action of my little rugrats running around you know and then uh this guy what if it goes what if  the shutter speed goes to 1 over 30 and then all my rugrats are blurry rolling shutter this guy  is really good for rolling shutter and this guy is really bad for rolling shutter so if that  is a concern of yours if you are shooting race cars or people who are on bicycles that are  going fast or you're doing a lo
t of whips and pans you are not going to like the results  you're getting from the zve10 but the nikon does very well with rolling shutter even in 4k now  those are some broad strokes of these two cameras there is a lot that they can do and if i've left  something out that's important to you put it in the comments and let everybody know about it  i can't go over every single minute detail of these two guys or this video would be hours and  hours long i will do other videos featuring these two ca
meras so uh be sure to subscribe and you  know like hit the bell all that other nonsense appreciate you watching we'll talk to you again  soon okay bye-bye see that couple there i just messed up my test because uh they walked past  me and i got flustered so let's try that again

@frankt_

I just bought Nikon Z30, it's now my first interchangeable lens camera, after a 25 year gap in Photography (I used to do film photography)

@DR-zj4od

The Nikon Z30 wins hands down again. Great info.

@webuyhousesdenvercolorado

Now this was a true camera comparison. Man you really tested everything as equal as possible. Thanks a ton!

@visionprodvisionprod8426

Thank you Mark for all these well-documented details, it's reassuring that you continue to appreciate the Sony ZVE10 despite its age and its few flaws, but its affordable price and its obvious qualities will be difficult to beat for the competition. Its biggest defect "the rolling-shutter" disappears with the use from Catalyst browse.

@johnreygermanobaring

the most detailed comparison of the 2. THAAANK YOU SO MUCH MARK

@robertroy3003

I am a beginner knowing not much about camera. Last one was a film camera...... This review is awesome, even tough the concept explained were complex it was understandable. That is what happens when somebody understand extremely well their topic. When you understand well you can explain well. Great job Mark and thank you very much for the hard work you put in this.

@noisackda2564

Doing the work no one else is doing. Awesome stuff as usual. Learned more from you than anyone else.

@yohandelacruz0831

The Z30 is advantageous for existing Nikon DSLR users. Just strap in an FTZ adapter and you can use the best F-mount lenses on it with full functionality.

@anilaboutme

Such a great entertaining and informative comparison. Much appreciated. I'm a Nikon shooter, and while the Z lenses are lacking there's of course the F mount lenses that you can adapt. They'll be noisy though so it's better to use an off camera mic for that. Other than that they both are great.

@vikasgiri9803

One important feature you missed is “mode and user preset dial” of Nikon Z30. It’s very important for hybrid shooters. Going everytime in settings to change modes in ZV E10 is pain in the ❤.

@BrianBower

Solid comparison. I made my way here as I see the Z30 is on sale. I have a Nikon Z6 but want something to pair with it and the Z30 seems like a great choice.

@victorlim5077

Wow. The Nikon Z30 did quite well in the low light video footage. Good rolling shutter as well.

@lumpiaqueen

I’m so happy whenever I search something and you have a video for it! 😭💗

@helloiamtara

Thank you for such an in-depth review! I'll be making my purchase after watching this!!

@gordon3988

Wow…great comparison! For video little Dougie seems hard to beat as long usage doesn’t require panning. For photography, likely the Z30.

@markshirley01

The 1080p quality is substantially sharper to me, watching on my monitor, this is important to me because I shoot mostly 50p to give me the option to slow down 50% in post. So Im glad Nikon did well in this. Note: The Nikon Z30 doesn't crop 4K video at 30p, the ZVE10 does. I think from these tests the only thing Id miss in the Z30 is gyro stabilisation - having used it a few times its very handy.

@melissa_lennox

Great video! I have the Zve 10 but had no idea about Catalyst Browse… thanks for sharing!!

@goprimate

Thanks for a great review, I also really liked your review on the zv E10 vs Canon M50!

@LALONNIE

Omg you are AMAZING! Your videos are very informative and well done!!!!! Love how you show examples of footage and here’s the kicker, what made me comment was every question I had as to how “this or that” compares even when I went to search YOU came up! It’s like you had me covered on every comparison that came to mind lol love your content ❤

@mammitnaamalle4603

Thanks buddy, great short review!
