The scene starts and we see a spaceship called  Tempest in the vast emptiness of space, inside the ship, Commander John Virgil is present. Commander  John Virgil finds himself in a desperate situation as he endeavors to transport a vital serum to his  home colony, currently ravaged by the Ellycia C virus. His wife and young son are present in the  colony at the heart of the crisis. He watches a video disc, which contains a recording of  his wife and kid, while in the control room. His wife, Cori
nne Virgil is talking about the  colony and the spread of the virus and tells him not to worry. She tells him that there have  been deaths but both she and their Son are fine. She informs him that eight more colonists  were quarantined yesterday, then his son, John Virgil Jr. comes to his mother in the video  and he greets his father, he asks him to take care of the marble that he has given him for good  luck. He asks him to keep it shiny and Virgil has the marble in his hand and he cleans it. T
he rest  of the crew arrives there and one of them comments that he is watching the video again, showing that  he often watches the disc and misses his family, the man known as Captain Parker reminds him that  the disc is only good for up to 10,000 plays. Governor Mudry asks him how much longer it  will take to reach the colony. He tells her that they started deceleration about two  hours ago and will drop out of the space matrix in 10 seconds. Dr. Vasquez says that  the new ships can make this
trip in half the time. Captain Parker says that the tempest is  such an old wreck that it'll be so amazing if they make it at all. Governor Mudry replies  that it was the best Earth could spare. They start to prepare for the matrix exit, Captain  Parker and Virgil both check the consoles, but suddenly there is a warning that  they are in a gravitational field. Governor Mudry asks what's wrong and Vergil  tells her that they left the space matrix early and within the gravity well of a planet,  me
aning that the ship will now be pulled towards the planet and firing the engines will not  be sufficient for reaching the gravitational escape velocity of this particular planet.  Captain Parker tells Dr. Vasquez to get to the escape pod, but he insists that Governor  Mudry should go. Vergil gets to Dr. Vasquez, hands him a package, and says that Governor  Mudry can't save the colony from the virus, but Dr. Vasquez can. He gets Dr. Vasquez to the  escape pod and tells him to get the serum to the
colony or else six and a half million people die,  he then asks him to save his family before putting him in the escape pod with the Cure. During this  mission, Vergil's ship seemingly gets tugged by the gravity of a gas giant. Tragedy strikes  and the spaceship crashes on a rocky world. Dr. Vasquez awakens the passed-out Vergil and  he asks about Captain Parker. Dr. Vasquez tells Vergil that Captain Parker is unconscious and  possibly has suffered a concussion or Subdural hematoma. Vergil find
s Captain Parker's hat and  puts it back on his head. The control voice says that their engines are overloading and Vergil says  that they will have to turn them off. The gravity escape velocity for this planet is too big for  the engines of the Tempest to have any significant effect. Vergil opens two hatches and tells Dr.  Vasquez that the energy flow has to be cut to both chambers, simultaneously. He tells Dr. Vasquez  that there will be a switch marked as overrun. They locate it and trigger i
t at the same time.  Vergil comments that they should be dead by this impact and asks Dr. Vasquez why he is there and  not in the escape pod headed toward the colony. Dr. Vasquez tells him that the pod failed to  launch, and there is some fire in the cabin. Vegil takes the fire extinguisher and puts out  the fire. He tells Dr. Vasquez to look after Captain Parker. Governor Mudry asks Vergil  if they have crashed and he says that they came in the gravity well of Leviathan which is a  known gas gi
ant. They should have been crushed by its gravity but something is not adding up  and things aren’t as we expect them to be. When the Governor Mudry asks how could  this happen? Vergil tells her that the ship was overtaxed and the engine power wasn’t  enough for the immense gravity. Governor Mudry suggests that perhaps they are adrift. But  Vegil tells her that such is not the case as they have landed somewhere, this is why they  feel gravity. Governor Mudry says that they even had gravity befor
e the crash, Vergil replies  that it was because they had a gravity generator. He looks in the pod and finds the cure there  and sighs of relief. They hear some voices and notice something moving, Governor Mudry  asks if it is possible that a search team could find them so quickly. Vergil says that  it is not possible as communication and sensor arrays must have collapsed during the crash. He  then sees Captain Parker waking up and asks Dr. Vasquez how he is. Dr. Vasquez tells him that  he has a
sprained ankle and internal bleeding. Waking up Captain Parker asks if his hat is  on? and Vergil says that it never came off. Captain Parker sees Dr. Vasquez and asks what  he is doing there, Vergil Informs him that the escape pod failed. Captain Parker asks him  what is the status and Vergil tells him that the engines are off and so is life support. It  looks like fire suppression did its job. There's a hull breach but all doors are locked, so they  are cut off from the rest of Tempest and ca
nnot move between the corridors. He also informs him  that the communication systems are also down. Captain Parker asks about their location,  Vergil is not sure but he makes a guess that they bounced off Leviathan's atmosphere  and crashed on one of its moons. Captain says that the chances of that happening are very  low and Vergil comments that they somehow got lucky. Captain Parker is in pain so Dr.  Vasquez injects him with some painkillers and sedatives and he passes out again but  tells Ve
rgil to get a message to Corinne. Governor Mudry comments that it hardly seems  their priority should be to get a message to his wife. But he tells her that it is  their priority because she's the head of the colony’s search and rescue team. He  then tells her that he is going outside in his spacesuit to see where they are. He shows  her a button and tells her to press it if she wants to talk to him. He then goes to the  airlock and prepares to head out. Vergil is getting into a space suit to go
out and  Dr. Vasquez arrives there and tells him that Captain Parker is getting worse. There's  not a lot he can do about the head injury. Without surgery, the pressure inside his skull  will continue to build. Vergil asks how long he has, Dr. Vasquez informs him that if he  moves as little as possible then he has 48 hours at max. Dr. Vasquez asks Vergil if he  and Captain Parker served together. He says that not only did they fight together they  also lost. Vergil is disheartened over the fact
that after all this they had to go and  beg for the cure. Dr. Vasquez says that Earth sent him and he is the best epidemiologist  on Earth. Vergil says that he is sent in case the new colonial Governor Mudry gets  sick, so he can protect her. Dr. Vasquez says that Vergil’s thinking is extremely  cynical. Vergil says that if being honest, if their colony is destroyed by any enemy  or this plague then Earth will fall to a new colonizer. So their generosity is not an  act of philanthropy but an ac
t of desperation and need. Vergil gets dressed completely and  Dr. Vasquez returns inside to Governor Mudry. On the coms, Vergil tells Dr. Vasquez to not  attempt to rescue him if something goes wrong. He says that they still have two or three days of  life support left on the ship and maybe Corinne will find them until then. Dr. Vasquez asks  what can happen to him out there. But Vegil has no idea as he doesn’t know where they are. While  assessing the situation outside out of nowhere he is att
acked by a Spider-like creature.Panicked,  Vergil quickly gets back into the airlock and we see two of the spider-creatures  make their way inside the Tempest. We see Vergil waking up in a hospital  surrounded by his wife and son, praising him for the brave act, and celebrating  him for his heroic act and being able to save the whole colony by delivering the antiviral  medicine. But this is short lived and he wakes up in the ship, seemingly hallucinating  his hospital moments with his family. Wh
ile he was passed out, Governor Mudry was also  bitten by this enigmatic spider-like creature, leading to a series of hallucinations that blur  the line between reality and fantasy for her. They aren’t separating the spider from her because they  assessed that it has control over her vital organs and separating it from her would mean she won’t be  able to survive. We also see she is uttering the phrase “I saved them” while in this hallucinogenic  state. Soon after he starts grappling with an ina
bility to distinguish what is real, Commander  Virgil finds himself caught between two distinct realities. The precarious nature of their  circumstances adds layers of complexity to the unfolding narrative, as Virgil navigates the  challenges in his quest to save his home colony. Virgil finds himself oscillating between two  contrasting realities. In the "bad" reality, he and his crew are stranded on this moon,  struggling to survive. After an attempt to restart the engines and not being able to
do so,  they decide to fire a distress beacon in space, the beacon reveals that they are in  the interior of a living being that hosts these spider-like creatures.  The venom induces hallucinations, blurring the boundaries between reality and  illusion in this dire situation. Conversely, the "good" reality portrays Virgil as a hero with his  family, having successfully delivered the serum. However, the crew, including Virgil, is undergoing  treatment for Ellycia C., a virus that causes hallucin
ations. Despite the apparent happiness in  this good reality, the persistent effects of the virus add a layer of complexity to Virgil's  perception, challenging his grasp on what is truly happening around him. The narrative unfolds  as Virgil grapples with the dual nature of these divergent experiences and the consequences  of the challenges he faces in both realms. In each reality, Virgil perceives the other as  a hallucination and is cautioned by the Captain about the potential fatal consequen
ces  if he doesn't resist the allure of the "false" reality. As the narratives intertwine,  Virgil faces a crucial decision. Ultimately, he chooses to prioritize the well-being  of his people in the "bad" reality, bidding farewell to the seemingly idyllic "good"  reality. Reasoning that his family is already safe if the "good" reality holds true, Virgil  acknowledges that the serum is still essential for the survival of those in the "bad" reality.  In a selfless act, he embraces the challenges o
f the "bad" reality to ensure the delivery  of the serum and the safety of his people. As the climax unfolds, the captain launches Virgil  away from the spaceship in an escape pod, marking a poignant and sacrificial conclusion to Virgil's  tumultuous journey between two conflicting realms. As Virgil hurtles towards the colony in the  escape pod, he establishes contact with his wife once he is out of the communication void,  hyped by the belief that he is successfully navigating a path to save bo
th the crew and the  colony. While traversing the vastness of space, he manages to send a final transmission from  his wife, proudly asserting, "I saved them." Reality shifts once more, revealing a shocking  truth. Virgil has fallen prey to the spiders, and so has the entire crew. Both the  "good" and "bad" realities are, in fact, false constructs. Unbeknownst to Virgil  and the crew, they are all unconscious, ensnared by the alien spiders, who are  feeding on their unconscious forms. Each of us
creates his own world.  We conjure paradises from our hopes, and nightmares born of fear. But  what if they are both illusions? And that's all for today guys, see you next time  on Recap Nest with another juicy sci-fi story.

The ending was so sad :( I can't imagine being trapped like that.

@Nowyn

I remember watching this one as a kid - and this really triggered a fear of spiders for me.
