Speculation on Finn's Perception of Princess Bubblegum in "Don't Look" (Adventure Time)

Finn transforms Princess Bubblegum into a teen boy heartthrob in the episode “Don’t Look.” While I’m not a psychiatrist myself, I still attempt to provide potential explanations for what Finn’s view of Peebles indicates. Music: “My Best Friends in the World” (Instrumental Arrangement) by John Q4 (John Hernández). Original song composed by Rebecca Sugar and Tim Kiefer. "NEPTR's Rap" (Instrumental Remix) by Blue Ion.

In the episode “Don’t Look,” Finn gets cursed by magic eyeballs that transform anybody he looks at into what Finn perceives that person to be. When he gazes upon Princess Bubblegum, she transforms into a teenage boy heartthrob! Finn seeing Princess Bubblegum as a super attractive teen boy is really interesting and also quite perplexing (Finn’s cry of "I'm not a psychiatrist!" is quite applicable). On my first viewing, I had actually misheard PB, and thought she said “teen boy’s heartthrob,” whic
h would imply Finn still has lingering feelings for her while also establishing that Finn has a thing for tomboys. But that is definitely not what PB says. [Princess Bubblegum: "Teen boy heartthrob it is.”] Teen boy heartthrob – as in a teen boy who is a heartthrob, not the heartthrob of a teen boy. I mean, I had (and still have) a thing for tomboys myself, but in a general all-encompassing sense, that’s not really the standard for a teen boy’s desire. It’s pretty clear (after you’ve gotten over
the initial shock of the scene) that PB did turn into a boy. So my thoughts on what this could mean: One interpretation is that this transformation reflects that Finn has moved beyond his old crush on Bonnibel. Finn now sees PB as “one of the guys” so to say. But why a really dreamy and attractive guy? That aspect of it might represent the careful balancing act Finn is mentally undergoing. First crushes don’t break easily, and it’s normal for slight lingering feelings to remain for who knows ho
w long. While Finn no longer sees PB as somebody to romantically pursue, it’s not like he can forget about the magnetic attraction and the sensuality he felt for her in the past, so this manifests as Bonnie not just being a boy, but a boy heartthrob. Finn basically turned her into, for a lack of a better term, a bishounen character, which is briefly defined as “a young man whose beauty and sexual appeal transcends the boundary of gender or sexual orientation.” An alternative potential explanatio
n is that PB’s appearance is representative of the immature hyper-desire that young girls inexperienced with sexuality can form for members of boy bands or for other teen boy heartthrobs. This overblown dramatic infatuation (which Finn’s crush is really comparable to – down to the pictures and everything) can be hard to 100% recover from, even as one is maturing away from adolescence. Due to the differences in how sexuality is marketed toward budding teenagers based on their sex, there is not a
comparable phenomenon for teen girl heartthrob that captures the same spectrum of feelings, so perhaps this is why PB transformed into a boy. This interpretation would mean Finn’s attraction to Princess Bubblegum has still not been extinguished; the fire within still burns. Although perhaps both of these interpretations I’ve outlined exist in a limbo inside Finn’s mind; there is a self-realization that the crush is in the long-distant past, but those feelings Finn was subject to still never full
y died down. There is also a more general layer of meaning to Bonnie’s transformation that I absolutely adore. Princess Bubblegum, as we all should know by now, shoulders an immense amount of responsibility overlooking the Candy Kingdom and the state of the citizens in it. Finn is constantly getting called over to help PB with matters of managing the kingdom, and even in this very episode we have Bonnie trying to decide between two very adult-looking suits for a public awareness speech. [Princes
s Bubblegum: “Boss next door or hot president?] But despite all this, despite the burden PB carries, and Finn frequently partaking in jobs and quests to ease that burden, Finn sees PB as this laid-back sandal-wearing hot teen boy. It's so counter-intuitive to how Bonnie often acts and the many duties she performs; a major component of PB’s identity is that of an overworked ruler with control issues. But Bonnie as we see her in episodes like "Pajama War," where she takes a break from her endless
work and shows her more relaxed and vulnerable side, this is the Princess Bubblegum that Finn actually sees all the time. And there’s something particularly sweet and delicate about that. Out of all the transformations Finn caused, Bonnie’s depiction was easily my favorite due to its multi-layered complexity and all the tender implications that it packs. To hear my thoughts on the rest of this awesome episode, check out my review of “Don’t Look." I lambasted Finn for behaving like his biological
father before Finn had even met Martin.

"Super attractive teenage boy" Two dots, a line and a hat

@stalk8r

I just saw this in a way that while he still sees her objectivelly pretty, it doesnt mean anything to him anymore, as she is just a bro for him. So he made her a handsome bro. Bro.

@DrTimes99

I personally liked the Ice King's transformation. Fin doesn't see the Ice King as Simon exactly. If he did, the transformation would have included Simon's clothes. Instead Finn transforms the Ice King into Simon with no clothes on, save for a bow tie and the Ice Kings rag-underpants. I think it demonstrates that Finn sees the Ice King as a man who has lost his marbles, rather than just seeing past the Ice King entirely.

@owenchiang7877

favorite transformation was bmo turning into a real boy.

@OnlyZunkin

Keep in mind that teen boy heart throb was PB's interpretation of what she was changed rather than Finn's. All of the people who got transformed by Finn misidentified what they were turned into. For instance BMO was turned into a little angel but interpreted himself as being turned into a real boy. Ice King failed to recognize he had been turned into his former self etc. Each person Finn changed had their own take on what the change meant, but I'm not sure if their take on things was really accurate. Finn thought he had been turned into a monster but if you look at him he was turned into a warped version of his father. I think the point of the episode is everyone has a different idea and internal image of who the people around them and themselves really are and they aren't necessarily accurate.

@aoki556

I think what people need to understand is PB said 'heartthrob' NOT Finn. he never said it was attractive, that's probably just PBs perception of what she got turned into. he might just see her as a friend or something he aspires to be.

@theannouncer5538

The fact that he didn’t even see Jake as a dog was a little touching

@Bayonettamachinekill

Marceline is so gonna enjoy that new Teen boy heartthrob look of PB lol

@Zukooooooooo

In the beginning of the episode, Finn says he wants to be as tall as PB. My take on this is that Finn want's to be a teen boy hearthrob. He wants to be cool, accomplished and strong (and hey maybe even attractive), kind of like PB.....

@SavageEntertainmentYEAH

“Turned into an Attractive boy” Literally jsut looks like pb with a hat and casual clothes lol

@SirUmnei

Honestly, I think that this is because he see's Bubblegum as what he WANTED to be. In the beginning of the episode he says he wished was as tall as her. Perhaps he sees her as what he wanted to be, just because she is responsible, smart and good looking. So when he looked at her, her perceived her as what he wanted to be, a hot boy capable of winning a gril's heart, which, relationship wise, is was Finn wants. Makes sense in a way, right?

@yadrielcolon2032

could it be that finn's desire to pb's equal literally made her his equal a teen boy??

@simplelangpo

It might be that he sees Bonnie as a cool dude

@doro627

I think Finn sees her as a teen boy heart-throb because he himself is also a teen boy, and if you're a teen there is always that one person in your life who you will always see as cool. PB's transformation is the manifestation of Finn thinking of PB as a person way cooler than him, he sees her as unattainable, he cannot be like her. Her taking the form of a boy his age shows that he can relate and understand her, but being a 'cool' guy shows that despite the correlation they have as friends, he sees her as a level above him, causing her to transform into a friend his age, but still feels inadequate in her presence.

@neeneko

Something I have been wondering: when PB describes her new body as 'teen heartthrob', could that be her take rather than Finn's? If Finn is seeing her as 'one of the guys', he might see her in terms of a young athletic male like himself, modeling her as a peer, and it is PB who sees that body type as heartthrob-worthy. So a double lens of how PB sees Fin's view of late adolescence or even how PB sees people like Fin. Finn creates a peer, but since Finn is suggested to be pretty hot, the reaction of someone with an interest in guys is commenting on the hotness of the body.

@adamjones418

My favorite transformation is Ice King to Simon. Can you do a video on what you think Finn would have seen characters like Flame Princess, Lumpy Space Princess, Marceline etc.

@kennethsatria6607

I like the theory of Finn seeing PB as the laid back person, its pretty sweet

@evanwang328

I vote for hot president suit. What are your opinions?

@aislainhateseverything8808

Bubblegum needed something to wear anyway, she said it prior. Most of her wardrobe options were mostly silly. Finn has to see her as a tomboy in his own mind literally so he can be around d her. If he always saw her as a hot girl he worked with he would never get anywhere. He would be constantly reminded of just how attracted he is to her, so by tricking his own mind into just seeing her as the fun boy next door type. Naturally she's a hearthrob regardless so that goes without saying, and in the context makes sense.

@MightSiiigh

He sees her as "one of the guys" but still finds her attractive. That's all there is to it. I have a friend who I have that mindset with
