[Music] we continue our Black History Month Sports Plus right now we are going to unveil our list of the 10 most influential African-American sports figures in our Town's history since we profiled jjk and Kurt flood earlier in the program it allowed us to choose 10 others here's our list Demetrius Johnson the former missou football star in Detroit Lion lived a life of service he grew up in the projects and did everything he could to help Christmas presents for the kids Thanksgiving dinners for f
amilies and getting scholarships for high school athletes Arthur Ash the former wiblin Champion went to suar high school and died of age 30 years ago he received the presidential medal of freedom award for being an active civil rights supporter and raising awareness for AIDS Henry Armstrong perhaps one of the most underrated athletes ever from the area the vashan grad was one of the few boxers in history to become a champion in three different weight classes Anthony Bonner arguably the greatest
basketball player in St Louis University history Bonner did it with a Relentless work ethic he later started the boners summer league which became the place for all the great players in town to compete Azie Smith it's not just a 15 All-Star games and 13 gold gloves the Hall of Famer never left town after he arrived he doesn't turn down autographs or a chance to help a charity in St Louis Lu Brock the best at so many things stealing bases hitting in the World Series series and being gracious with
his fans until the day he died 4 years ago tough not to smile around Lou Bob Gibson not the warm and fuzzy type but belov for his ferocity one pitcher to win one game you don't hesitate you choose number 45 the Spinx Brothers hard to believe when you think about it in that room in the projects produced two gold medals and two heavyweight champions you can't write a book about boxing without including Michael and Leon Spinx Dawn Harper Nelson mentored by Jackie Joiner ciry and trained by her hus
band Bob the pride of East St Louis won a golden Beijing and a silver in London in the 100 meter hurdles and finally Martin Matthews he left us a few years ago at age 97 but his impact because of the Matthews Dicky Boys and Girls Club could last for a long time he helped thousands of kids for over a half century realize their Sports Dreams time now for the victory Men's Health Frankly Speaking
