ow to survive winter and what kind of things to look out for when you're trying to prepare for winter regarding clothing and everything um keep in mind that what we tell you is not the only options there's so many options and we're just giving you our personal opinions for all of that um so maybe we should head on to introductions um i'll make sure that okay we can go to introductions now um so hello i'm manuela i use your pronouns i am one of the gge leaders i am a senior double majoring in mus
ic and studies of cinema and media cultures uh and i'm an international student from ecuador um i we will go on to the um ggi's and then come back for ife when he can rejoin us all right sounds good hello everyone my name is mijo toy i'm from south korea i'm a sophomore at carson school management double majoring in management information systems and marketing i use she her heart's pronounced i'm one of the global gopher influencers our gti team creates content and shares useful information and
campus resources for international students so if you haven't done so go check out iss you met umn instagram page and if you're interested in being a global gopher influencer please let me or hura mentally know about your interest feel free to ask me any questions i'll be pass it to minhui hello everyone um my name is min hui and i use she her hair is pronounced and i'm i'm a global golfer influencer i'm from taiwan and i'm a sophomore majoring in psychology i'll pass it to hula uh hey everyone
my name is huda and i'm also a global gopher influencer i'm an international student from india born and raised in dubai and i'm also a freshman majoring in psychology just like all of you i'm going to be experiencing my first winter here in minnesota this year uh and i've heard a lot about what winter can be like so minwe what's something that's important to you when surviving winter one essential item for me in winter is boots this can be the key to surviving winter comfortably and safely i di
dn't have a pair as soon as winter started and realized my mistake quickly enough i slept on the road and almost got hit by a car so that's pretty sad um they not only help avoid accidents while walking on snow but also keep your feet warm and this is extremely important and they protect you from snow getting into your shoes this doesn't sound like a big deal but once it melts and you feel the cold it can be quite terrible some examples of good winter boots are colombia surreal and timberland al
though there are many other brands you should always try to look for boots with thick sauce as well as the gap between the heel and the tip that way you are less likely to sleep and working looking like a penguin like this help help with your balance and prevent you from sleeping also keeping mind that there are different type of snows you need to be prepared for and to always look out for patches of eyes since those are the most slippery on campus they try to keep all the paths for students cle
ar but sometimes you might need to take less common pass so be careful uh before we continue i just noticed that ife came back so ife would you like to introduce yourself okay all right hi everyone uh my name is ife and i am a global gopher leader um i'm a senior and my major is math and um yeah i'm really excited to do this with you guys thanks ep um back to min hoi's point uh you mentioned keeping pathways cleared during winter i did not know that they do that uh how would they how would how d
o they clear the paths and how often are they cleared out all right well like clean the sidewalk as often as they need to so if you're on campus you'll most likely see them around cleaning the snow they also use salt to help melt the ice so um so they use the salt to mail the eyes or the um the pad like help to move the build up yeah i didn't know that they used salt that's very very interesting thank you for sharing that uh what about you miju hi so my story is about puffer jackets and skirts i
attached some pictures of myself wearing my favorite buffer jacket on the right side and then scores right above the title to start off a puffer jacket is the only reason i was able to survive minnesota winter i have a typical black buffer jacket which go which is like very huge and long so it comes down to my knee it keeps me so warm and nice even though i don't have like i didn't wear layer too much inside the jacket um they block out the wind and they're usually ready for the snowy day the o
nly downside would be it is very difficult to be fashionable with the black puffer jacket i always look like a penguin when i walk to classes or go outside to pick up the food and the other item i would like to talk about is the scarves um you can see on the pictures that i have like superior scarf i love scarves because not only it keeps you warm it also could be a very fashionable items it is usually affordable and there are thousands of pants and colors you can choose from um this is also goe
s to other winter accessories such as head and gloves as well as you can see on the picture i'm i also like wearing hats too um so based on my one year of minnesota winter experience i brought some examples of places you can get good jacket there are upper ground beefits timberland and the north face the perfect jacket i think it could be very pricey that um that was not one of the reason i was like very shocked when i first came to minnesota i was like i'm gonna spend a lot of money on the jack
et on the boots and everything but it really is not um there are like plenty of options you can choose from and then there they always do the sales too um to sum up my recommendation for your winter um get a puffer jacket or if you don't like puffer jacket you should get like a very warm jacket that's it thank you vichu um so i know that some of us do have in-person classes on campus and i do i know that these puffer jackets can be quite heavy to carry around uh would we have to carry our coats
with us around to every class that we have in person that's a very important question most buildings and classrooms have hangers around so you don't have to be bothered by keeping your coat near you in class you can hang it hang it up when you enter the building or enter the room like classroom and pick it up on your way out so you don't have to carry it okay that's good that makes things way more comfortable thank you miju what is something that's important to you manuela okay something that yo
u might not notice in these pictures is the amount of layers i am wearing underneath all of my sweaters so unlike miju i personally don't i'm not the biggest fan of puffer jackets so i use wool coats and like really thick sweaters um and that became fundamental in layering so i come from a country that doesn't have seasons where we only have two seasons all year round which means i only need one thin jacket to have at all times and that's fine um it's not the same in minnesota at all so having a
lot of really good layers that can keep you warm while also being thin and not being overwhelming became fundamental um i in every single picture i'm wearing thermal leggings and at least two to three um thinner like layers on top to stay warm and not have to wear really thick puffers um which i'm short so they make me look shorter so i don't like using um and then some of my favorite options for this is unico they have the heat collection um which is a very very very thin collection that keeps
you extremely warm while not being too bulky um and it's perfect for adapting to different like weathers and moving around and then the gap also has really good thick sweaters that you can wear instead of wearing multiple layers um as well as cost where they have a lot of really nice fitted sweaters that will keep you warm um and you can also thrift them um thrift stores weren't that big in ecuador and i came here and it was one of my favorite things to discover you can go buy things at thrift
stores that are all around the cities and it's good for the environment as well as being cheaper than a lot of places that you can find them thank you manuela um what about the change of temperature when you walk around campus how do you deal with layers while you're moving around that's a great question judah and for those of you that don't know our campus actually has a very extensive tunnel system as well as five different bus lines and the light rail that crosses out through our campus um so
what i have done the past three years is i try to plan my day as much as i can if i have to walk outside for longer periods of time i will try to wear more layers and stay warmer versus if i know that i'm only staying on a west bank and i can move around the tunnels for most of the day i will try to wear less layers and feel less overwhelmed when i'm inside that's really helpful advice um thank you are there any things that we should keep in mind to prepare um yes as i mentioned earlier i think
having a good scar is also very handy i would recommend you to looking for a thicker scarf such as blanket scarf um those are usually a bit thicker and it keeps you warm very easily whatever you pay any thoughts for me personally hats are also very important to survive winter your ears can get cold very fast so having something that covers them up is essential you can find wool or yarn hats pretty much anywhere and they are definitely an important addition right and if you're like me and hate h
ats like curly haired people would understand how terrible hats can be on our hair um i personally use earmuffs and i have a ton of pairs that go underneath my hair um because even the band of ear muffs can damage the way it looks so um you can have under ear muffs you can also wear just hoodies and jackets that have hoods on them and they will also keep your ears warm especially if they're like fleece lined or like fleece hoodies they will keep you very warm or even if you're like me um and wea
r it listen to music all the time a good pair of over the ear headphones will also keep you warm while walking around campus so it's up to you and there's a lot of options what about human is there anything that comes to mind yeah keeping in mind that boots are very important and having good thick socks is also key that way you don't run to the risk of getting frostbite on your toes but also won't feel uncomfortable with too many things okay that's some really great advice thank you guys um but
let's go back to that last thing what is frostbite sure uh so frostbite happens quite a lot during the winter but um it is easy to prevent so it happens when you leave your skin usually your toes fingers or ears exposed when outside in like really cold temperatures and so like you lose the feeling in them and you lose the feeling in them and um yeah it's just really bad so make sure you wear your gloves hats and proper footwear to prevent this thank you ife um are there any other things i should
keep in mind um one more thing and that is hypothermia sounds terrifying but hypothermia is when your body loses heat quicker than it can produce heat um which can make a lot of your you know your body wet in theory shut down but just like frostbite this is very easy to prevent um you just need to be aware of staying warm and when you check the weather on your apps or whatever make sure that you're not just looking at the weather that appears but looking at what it feels like because in minneso
ta because we have the river and everything wind chill plays a very important role on what how cold it actually is outside so try to stay warm and try to always check the weather and avoid being in places outside for too long um keep in mind that bus stops are heated a lot of them are and if not you have a lot of places on campus where you can wait indoors instead of having to be outside for long periods of time um and just attempt to avoid that you know putting yourself in that position and try
to keep warm as best as you can that sounds good thank you so much manuela uh i've also heard about seasonal affective disorder which happens during the cold months um what is it and what solutions are there for it that's right huda affective disorder usually happens during the winter and it happens because of the lack of sunlight during the winter and i'm by no means a doctor but according to mayo clinic some of the symptoms are depression low energy and loss of appetite and some treatments al
so according to mayo clinic are light therapy which is basically just artificial um sunlight medication and psychotherapy it's also very important to get uh exercise during this time and don't forget to take your vitamins um and kind of with what ethan said seasonal effective sort is important and it happens not only in winter it can happen during the other seasons as well um but during winter it's prominent because of how early the sun sets and keep in mind that boynton has a lot of resources t
hat can also help if you're dealing with it um and as if i said attempting to stay active is very important um to prevent it so thank you everyone for all of your stories and all of your thoughts on this um now we are going to open up the floor for any questions that um on chat oh we do okay i'm sorry i can't see the chat so if someone could read that i would be very grateful oh i can read it yeah so okay if i'm pronouncing it wrong i'm i'm sorry george that asks do you think it is better to oh
but the closest in your home country or in minneapolis i can take this one um so i am also a freshman student so i bought all of well i bought most of my heat tanks and my uh jackets from where i live in dubai which is not really a cold place um so i've spoken to a lot of people about this and they said that uh even though the clothes are suited for the temperatures in minnesota if you ever feel cold like you can always buy another jacket like if you take the basics like heat tech or like a real
ly good jacket and you know if you layer i think it should be fine if you buy it from your home country only if it's available for the temperatures um normal in minnesota so that would be about you know pushing to about negative 20 i would assume so if you can find clothes that are suitable for those temperatures then i would say go for it thank you huda um great points yes always keep in mind and try to um find and do your research if you're not buying things here just to make sure that they ar
e good enough and if not you can always wait until you get here um if you order through like a lot of delivery services they probably will get there on time for you to be able to experience winter um do you have any other questions no so i might have a question uh so do we always have to wear winter boots uh when we walk around in snow so i will we don't have to wear winter boots i hate winter boots because i don't like covering up my ankles um and it's because i was never used to wearing boots
or long socks or anything as a kid and you don't have to but you have to assume the consequences if you don't um i remember having to wait at the light rail with sneakers on in very freezing temperatures and light rail took too long to come and like i couldn't feel my ankles so you don't have to but if you are going to not wear boots just be mentally prepared um and try to not be outside for long periods of time um and also you can definitely not wear boots if there's not a lot of snow falling u
m but if there is snowfall i would say you should wear boots but me do you have any thoughts on that yeah actually i wanted to mention that my i personally the one hate boots as well so i usually i just will use um my sneakers every winter but definitely it gets when it gets cold and then when you step into the snow your feet gets very cold and um i just i think i was able to just like deal with it because um there if you wait in the bus station or the light rail station there is a heated area s
o the heating system is like on the every station so you can dry your coats and then you can feel warmer in the station and just adding on to that um i think it is also important for everyone to remember to dry your wet jacket so when it's snowing day your jacket gets wet and then it is not a good great idea to just not to dry them so make sure to dry them and then there's like a heated place on bus station light rail station um so that you can like feel warm and then dry your coat how would you
dry your jackets like do you just like to take a hair dryer to it or like leave it outside in your room i don't just asking yeah yeah what i usually do i hang it on the hanger and then i put it under the heater so when the heater blew out the water wind it dries it out so that's what i usually do at home and kind of with what reiju had mentioned previously there are hangers in the different like classrooms and everything so if it's like snowing and you get snow on your coat before classes leavi
ng them there the rooms tend to be hot enough so when you really pick it up again it's not going to be wet and it's not going to be cold um ideally so indoors you also have that option and also like you mentioned like jackets getting wet would so would you recommend that we buy like an extra pair of socks to keep just in case our socks get wet okay so i recommend tooth i'm sorry i have a lot of thoughts about warm things so i tend to always have an extra pair of gloves and an extra pair of socks
um i have what i call coat gloves or jacket gloves where my coats for the colder days i have always like really cheap gloves stuffed in them so whenever i leave i never forget to take gloves as well as like warm socks and maybe have also like a scarf on hand because temperature can also change really fast and you can go to classes while it's not as cold and then you know an hour later there will be snow and there will be wind um so it's a great idea to have other things on hand we have any more
questions in the chat or something no yeah we've got one asking what snow activities are there available to students and i think midway if you want to take this question yeah um like we have ice skating and snowboarding and skiing in school like i'm actually taking snowboarding next semester so if anyone does it contribute to like your course load like do you get credits for it yeah i get two credits for it for snowboarding yeah that's cool you should definitely take that um i can also add on t
o that for the snow activities um i know it might not be the best time for every activity but i know a lot of my friends go to skiing near minnesota and um there's snow tubing skiing snowboarding and there are in minnehaha falls is close to our campus and it is beautiful during winter when the like the lake is frozen so i know a lot of people love to visit there and also there's like a snow castle near like in minnesota so a lot of people um go there and then see the snow castles and ice castles
everything thank you miju and a quick note if anyone likes to walk or run uh keep in mind that minneapolis has a lot of walking spaces and things all around campus that you can go out for walks during the winter um if you tend to jog out in the cold you have to stay warm but you get warm so like it's also a fun thing to do outdoors if you want to um you can have some beautiful scenery while running with all the snow and all the trees which is really beautiful um cool do we have any last questio
ns anything else we want to discuss i heard something about not going outside when your hair is wet please tell me more um big mistake your hair can freeze and it can break um from experience it's not fun i didn't know that was a thing i thought it was a myth um not a myth at all and even your eyelashes can freeze and a quick thing that i forgot to mention previously keep in mind that masks now become part of our everyday lives um and they also have an effect when it's cold outside you're breath
ing into a mask which means that it would condense really fast as well as your eyelashes will condense um because of the air that is coming out so just be aware they won't freeze because it's hot in your face um but that does happen and hair freezing is very important to avoid so try to dry your hair off or wear hoods or hats um that would cover your head completely so you don't get sick or have parts of your hair break off which is real yep on a lighter note have any of you guys made a snowman
or a snow person how easy how difficult is it like how much effort did you put into it please tell me more well i haven't actually made a snowman but i've made like a snow angel like and it was really cold and i would never do it again um i haven't made snowman but i did a lot of shovels last winter break because i had to clean up the parking areas it is still fun i have made snowmen and i try to make a snowman every single time beginning of the year two years ago i was making snowmen at every s
ingle bus stop on campus because i had to wait for buses a lot and i love snow so i spent a lot of my time you have to wait for the right snow though it has to be able to stick which is also great snow for snowball fights um and you know given that there's a lot of trees and everything around making snowmen is so much fun because you get to go look for branches and leaves to add to them so if you have time and you're just outside for some reason waiting 100 you should make a snowman it doesn't m
atter how big or small it is it's always entertaining that sounds so lovely does anyone else have any questions anything to add cool well in that case we can pass it on to ife to start our close up yeah um so uh we hope everyone enjoyed this session and we're able to learn some tips to survive winter in minnesota um i know it can be intimidating coming to her place with such drastic weather isn't that right huda 100 i've learned some very interesting things here though and i do feel a little mor
e prepared than i did a week ago so i'm very excited to be there and also see snow which i heard is really beautiful sure as i've mentioned snow is my favorite part of winter um i almost cry every single time it starts snowing again um and if you have time and you're walking around campus you can stop and see snowflakes which are unbelievably perfect compared to what we expect them to be um so highly recommend that snow is beautiful and you will if you end up liking it you will love it here in m
