a deadly night in the forest park Southeast neighborhood what we know so far about a shooting that left two people dead and rain has wrapped up we're dry for the rest of the day but much cooler I'm going over the push of cold weather that's hitting us this weekend I have these goals that I look forward to that helped me just like keep pushing myself after a week of public appearances emotional testimony and a jury finding the man who named her guilty Jana Edmonson is now sharing her story this i
s today in St Louis focused on you you are taking a live look at the Illinois metro bus facility where in just 1 hour from now doors will open for the company's call aide hiring Fair we have a lot more to come on that in just a moment good morning it's Saturday March 9 I'm Mark Maxwell thanks so much for joining us our dynamic duo Travis Cummings and Mercedes McKay have the day off but we've got the always effervescent weather first meteorologist Tracy Hinson here with us to brighten up your Sat
urday morning good to see you Tracy yeah staying strong here without Travis and Mercedes but we're having a good time without them anyways they're sleeping in Lucky them all right now for us today we are going to see showers continue to track through here you can see they're near uh Arkansas and making their way across the border of Missouri and we do have that rainfall that's further off and to our East right now but we are looking nice and dry big push of Colder air has come in though not dras
tically colder we're not talking very chilly here but it is brisk compared to what we have seen the past couple of days it is 41 it feels like 33 winds are out of the West Northwest just under 15 miles per hour so we do have that windchill effect today pretty soon we won't be talking about windchill anymore and we'll be talking about the heat index so enjoy the feels like temperature while it lasts temperatures will be around 50° today today with plenty of sunshine for the afternoon we will have
a light Breeze with us throughout the day today and it'll be a chilly breeze it's out of the North so it's like turning the air conditioning on coming up I'll outline your warmer 7-day forecast new this morning we're following an overnight shooting in the forest park Southeast neighborhood near The Grove people say uh police say two people were shot and killed there it happened at the intersection of Arco and newstead a little after 1:00 this morning morning police say A 42-year-old man was sho
t and then brought to the hospital where he later died the second victim a 37-year-old woman was found dead in a nearby residence with a gunshot wound police have not released any information about the victims or a potential suspect right now our Newsroom is working to learn more this has been a long week for 18-year-old Jana Edmonson after a jury found Daniel Riley guilty for causing the crash that took her legs she's now sharing her story exclusively with five on your side for the first time s
he and her family are speaking out about last year's tragic incident which captured the Public's attention in downtown St Louis they're thanking the community for an outpouring of support but as they tell our Christine buyers more people still need to be held accountable Jana Edmonson can barely move 20 feet without someone in St Louis stopping her to say how much they've been thinking and praying for her it gets overwhelming at times but again I just I'm grateful for it because it's also helped
me to keep pushing on February 18th 2023 Jana's life changed forever when Daniel Riley blew through a yield sign at 45 mil an hour and struck her severing her legs this week a jury found him guilty on almost all charges recommending he be sentenced to close to 20 years in prison I was pleased that he was found guilty with pretty much everything that he was charged with but at the end of the day like he has legs I don't so he doesn't have to go through what I have to go through just to get back
to even walking and so it's never going to be enough there are also some people the Edmonson say haven't supported them including former St Louis circuit Attorney Kim Gardner her Administration failed to take Riley to trial for an armed robbery 9 months before the accident and failed to ask a judge to revoke his bond after dozens of violations the IT team found in court records did you feel like the circuit attorney's office failed you yes 100% many people say Jana's story led to Gardner's resig
nation but she was the one that was commanding the ship she she was the leader it was her responsibility the Edmonson say Gardner and St Louis mayor to Jones did not reach out to them when Jana was in the hospital to me that was a slap in the face to was the Edmonson are also suing the city alleging it did not properly maintain signage at the intersection where the Collision happened the city changed the yield sign to a stop sign and tried to get the lawsuit dismissed your your Administration fa
iled her your city failed her and now you don't want to offer anything and I think that is so wrong morally today take that stance the Edmonson are from smea Tennessee but Jana mother hasn't missed a beat on St Louis news since the accident she says she's appalled by the city's inaction on a $40 million safer streets initiative it's been a year so what are we doing and they've been devastated by the multiple fatal and serious injury accidents that have happened since Jana including the Chicago m
other and daughter killed downtown after a concert just weeks ago we've had so many people walk up to us and say you know if the light's green I still stop because I don't know if somebody's coming as Jana and her parents continue their fight for safer streets tougher laws and healing Jana says they are leaning on their faith for strength God's purpose for us is way bigger than what we expected Christine buers five on your side Jana's mother told five on your side she wants to start a petition t
o have Kim Gardner's law license revoked last night mayor Jones office said they can't respond to ongoing litigation but the mayor does Express her deepest sympathies to Jana and her family right now you can watch that entire interview with Jana Edmonson and her family on our website ksdk.com you can also find it on our YouTube page and streaming on our app 5 plus
