Stakes Miniseries Megareview (Adventure Time S7E6–13)

How fantastic was Stakes? After discussing it for 35 minutes, I can still bring up tons more topics and dive into far more details – this review was barely breaking ground. You know something was a wonderful viewing experience when you’re having oodles of fun just thinking about it, and Adventure Time most certainly delivered with this amazing miniseries. Join me as I discuss all 8 episodes of Stakes and cover topics like Marceline’s backstory, new Adventure Time lore, Princess Bubblegum’s growth, the wacky yet fearsome vampires which need to be hunted down once again (Fool, Empress, Hierophant, Moon, and Vampire King), the knee-slapping comedy, and Marceline’s character traits and motivations. [Music] the stakes miniseries was an absolute blast I think it's essentially the Paragon of what cartoon entertainment should strive to be I'm not saying it's completely without flaws but I have rewatched all of stakes multiple times and each time it remains an engrossing and captivating experience I had as much fun watching it the fourth time as I did the first time and I'm sure no matter how many times I sit down and rewatch stakes in the future the charm and Intrigue will remain this review w
ill Encompass all all eight parts of stakes and thus to retain some semblance of structure I am going to order my discussion by categories though some mild overlap in topics will inevitably occur first off we have to discuss Marceline herself this is her minseries after all I'll start off discussing Marceline's back story which we saw in the flashbacks and what interesting bits of lore the flashbacks established next I want to have a short section on Princess Bubblegum since she also received de
velopment and actually got her kingdom back in this miniseries or at least she's on the verge of usurping crunchy then the vamps what is Stakes without the zany vampires who need to be hunted I'm going to discuss my thoughts and analyze these banged fellas Stakes was funny and I'll have a section about the humor despite enjoying Stakes immensely it was not faultless so I will have a section about my issues I have very few but the criticisms I do have are large scale and I believe there's a lot o
f room for discourse about them these criticisms relate to Marceline's consistency as a character so this section will actually they contain a lot of character analysis on Marcy and I will also discuss what worked in addition to what I thought didn't work even if you disagree with my perspective and takeaway I think there's a lot of potential for discussion here so I hope you stay tuned in we'll end things with a brief summary of my thoughts and contemplation on what Marcy's future may be like g
oing forward with the series so let's jump in Stakes contains flashbacks to chunks of Marceline's past and I found these moments the most tender and heartfelt of the whole miniseries I was yearning for more but on the other hand overloading with too much backstory can do more harm than good and I think Stakes struck a really good balance the only flashback I considered unnecessary was when Marceline was trying to get Simon to remember their history that recollection of events added nothing beyon
d the words Marceline was already seeing and I would have preferred a more abstract flashback or a montage encompassing a longer period of time instead the rest of the flashbacks though just completely enthralling the timing of these flashbacks were implemented very well into the series to establish proper context but not give too much away and spoil what was to come the bulk of Marceline's backstory was explored in the second episode everything stays which is certainly a contender for the most
standout episode of the whole miniseries the start of everything stays provides us with our first peek at Marceline's mother she recounts how Sheen hunson abadier first met but unfortunately the only detail we got was that their meeting included the phrase fine from hunson oh what a tease that is Adventure Time I feel like we have to get more on Marcy's mom sometime in the future this has to just be the appetizer based on the pleasant scenery outside their mobile home window I have to assume thi
s event was before the Mushroom War and like most people already hypothesized it implies marcelene lost her mother either during the Mushroom War or shortly thereafter I think Marcy's mom was where Marcy's propensity for music and singing originally stemmed from and the song was a very authentic and affectionate moment between mother and daughter from this place of Solace we flash forward to the depressing event when Simon decided to leave Marcy Simon's moments of going full ice keing have incre
ased to the point where he is worried about the effect it would have on Marcy's mind and his ice powers have advanced Beyond his own control so he makes the difficult decision that Marcy would be better off without him something really important is implied in this scene and I went wide eyed after first realizing it Simon States I'll arrange for someone to come take care of you I'll make sure he doesn't leave who is he talking about it's hunson abadier seriously the dots are all there just beggin
g to be connected and he has to be the one who iceing found as his replacement what happens between this flashback and the next time we see Marceline she has her axe guitar which the axe was a family heirloom from hunson did you turn it into some kind of Loot and Marcy knows the soul sucking skill enabling the entire vampire Saga to unfold as it did who taught the skill to her my dad never gave me squat well just some soul sucking skills and what was Marceline's relative age when she was around
her dad recall her physical appearance in the scene with the fries which is when she split from him Yep this age bracket Falls squarely in between when Simon leaves her and she starts hunting vampires the pieces all fit too perfectly for anything else Simon was the one who somehow found abadier and the one who convinced him to take care of his daughter uh that's so cool one can ponder about why hunson didn't recognize ice during his first appearance back in season 2 but it has been a long time s
ince then and hunson isn't exactly the type to retain minute details about the long past Also let's be honest this backstory for marcelene was not planned in the early Seasons there will be more on that in my criticism section of this review but still this redcon about ice tracking down hunson for Marcy's sake this is a Flipping Fantastic redcon it also adds an additional layer of sadness to Marcy passed since hunson ends up being a terrible father so Simon saying I'll make sure he doesn't leave
is invalidated since Marceline made the choice to leave herself I just love everything about this style of connect the dots lore it's wonderful so Marceline eventually sets out on the vampire hunting in part because protecting the humans makes it feel like she is protecting Simon and Marcy's soul sucking skill proves essential as it is this skill that allows her to absorb the powers of the top level vampires she defeats the minion vampires who are turned humans don't seem to have any special po
wers worth absorbing Marcy eventually be friends and protects what might be among the last group of humans on the continent and this ladies and gentlemen is where we learn about the origin of animal hats animal hats that indubitably led to th's eventual hat design animal hats were invented to protect our Supple tender human necks against vampire bites but if I want why is a vampire you need an animal hat who knew again brilliant fraking Recon I loved it while Marcy clears the land of nearly all
the vampires the humans still want to leave the continent on the boat they're building because something big is coming and it's going to change all this what was it what came I was left pondering this really fervently after the episode ended and then it hit me something big something big that's familiar something big is the name of an episode Sky witch had shouted I'm cooking up something big crabbit in the episode named after her and next time we see her it was in the episode something big wher
e she activated her plan something big is Darren Darren is big he lays waste of the landscape and his Awakening would undoubtedly change everything and afterward he would return to Slumber until Sky which awoke him could the phrase something big merely be a coincidence when it was so deliberately utilized in recent seasons and tubr Tom so ominously alluded to something on a whole different scale I personally can't see this as mere coincidence I think Darren ravaged the landscape on this continen
t after the Mushroom War so in the end the humans seem to leave the continent while Marceline remains after being turned into a vampire I think there are multiple reasons why she didn't leave with the humans for one she would be afraid of being a danger to them and potentially succumbing to some form of desire for blood having just been turned she would not know how her mind would be affected after becoming a vampire and two she most likely still does not want to stray too far from Simon while s
he can't be by his side she still wants to protect him and check up on him and this would not be easy if she was to relocate to an entirely different continent now that's enough discussion on the backstory bits let's talk about Peebles Princess Bubblegum has a huge presence in Stakes particularly since she is the one behind the dev vamping machine and Remains by Marceline side as a comrade in the hunt for the released vampires the first seemingly meaningful scene with her was played for Laughs t
o the disappointment of Marceline Marceline I'm so very very very excited to test my new lab out on you I loved how this established the tone to the the miniseries though with tender implications transforming into a sucker punch of Comedy we do have a lot of adorable moments between Marleen and Bonnie throughout Stakes though and their friendship is a constant theme running through the series bonab bal's entire Arc in Stakes was about the hubris of thinking she is capable of anything which led t
o the dev vamping the release of the vampires and the potential of marcelene dying which is what spur PB to bust back into her former Kingdom in an attempt to save her friend PB is is even willing to accept magic attempts at saving Marcy because she has run out of Alternatives by the final episode pebs even asks Marcy to move into the castle with her and the two are much closer than they were at the start of stakes Marcy refuses this offer but it is clear the two are going to remain more involve
d in each other's life going forward now I guess we get to hang out together forever I got to say I was not at all expecting PB to get her kingdom back throughout the course of the this miniseries but wow it worked really well PB being around the banana guards makes them realize even more how much they miss their true princess and pb's heroic Feats to defend the candy citizens leads to the banana guards rejecting the king of O calling him a false idol of e wax and kinabo actually was made of wax
jeez PB doesn't have her kingdom back at the end of stakes but she is nonchalantly ready to overthrow crunchy oh crunchy who had temporarily seized the kingdom when the candy sit elected kin vu over P she was hurt and devastated and felt betrayed by her own people so she let the kingdom go to Kin Vu who the Candy People chose over her but since crunchy's overthrow of kin Vu wasn't Democratic and she had nothing to do with it PB is back in the game and doesn't feel any remorse about removing cru
nchy from his princess Hood in fact this happens offscreen since the next time we see PB she has her kingdom back Marceline killed them once and now she has to go Kill Bill on them again the vampires what would stakes be without the vampires they were awesome I adored their introduction scene where each of them is playing a different musical instrument like Marceline they are musically inclined but they play an odd and ancient sounding hymn that's very unlike anything Marceline ever plays alive
once again they all decide to split up as opposed to having a collective Hive like in the past since they are not unanimous on how they want to approach life a new there is actually a lot of mystery about them and we still know practically nothing about vampire Origins did they exist before the Mushroom War or did they come about after as did much of the magical and weird creatures Princess Bubblegum's Dev vamping machine seems to run or rely on nuclear power so this could be interpreted as evid
ence that vampires are related to the Mushroom War but hierophant has dialogue where he declares s this is our time so doesn't that imply the vampires were alive when humans had their time pre Mushroom War what SEALs the deal for me is this surely surely J Temple I am having a hard time imagining vampire King learning of Shirley J Temple after the Mushroom War and combined with hierophant implication I'm of the belief that the vampires were mythical creatures existing prior to the Mushroom War s
uch as hunson or other examples we've had in a long-distant past but how a seemingly regular lion became the vampire King and how all the other head Vamps got their powers and where all this stems from we have no clue this isn't a bad thing in fact sometimes providing too much backstory can end up feeling like filler if the backstory doesn't add much to the whole experience and the narrative remains cohesive without it that's perfectly fine hell sometimes it's even more fun to wonder and imagine
than to have an answer especially if the answer doesn't turn out to be super amazing but vampire King isn't entirely out of the series yet so perhaps one day we may learn more about the source and origins of vampires and if not it's still a fun thing to ponder on even with a lack of info the five head vampires are all based on major Arcana they're actually all named after major Arcana with the exception of the king who represents the Wheel of Fortune more on vampire King later in the video one
can spend a ton of time looking at presumed interpretations of what the different major Arcana mean and what they stand for and these meanings align smooth as butter with the according vampire one exception to that would be the empress however which I feel didn't align quite as smoothly as the rest if we look at the early concept drawings for the vampires she actually was originally going to be called the queen and not the empress anyway let's actually discuss these early concept sketches becaus
e I find them really interesting as you can see two of the characters were nailed in the early phase their designs don't really change and I can see why hierophant and the moon are incredible the other three I'm glad they got revised you can tell that the basic thing they were going for with a fool didn't change but I find his final design far superior the empress or the queen at the time she sort of stands out too much from the more old school and old timey feel of the others she's got glasses
on which I assume is all about the hypnotism power so that seems to be intact in heral concept but her new design with the Garb and the head cloth and the snake oh I prefer this one so much more and the vampire King himself he got the most Improvement in my opinion his old design was something out of Star Trek almost or maybe out of a cartoon parading Star Trek I don't think it works but the lion human bird hybrid deal that we got in the end brilliant just brilliant so I'm going to give more of
my thoughts on each of the vampires and the events they were involved with in the order of the kill card the fool I actually can't help but feel a tad sad about the fool he had to have hunted humans to be on Marceline's bad side but it seems like he doesn't comprehend his actions completely it doesn't even seem that he's capable of considering the larger picture in regards to anything he's a free-spirited CLA Hopper who just goes with the flow and likes silly fun and I assume like a wild animal
doesn't think twice about hunting its PR the fool probably doesn't think twice about sucking blood I like his design it's very standard for a typical fantasy gnome so it's not original in that aspect but when was the last time you saw gnome that was a vampire I don't think I ever have the empress she likes being the boss who splurges at the top and lets her minions take care of everything the most interesting thing about her would be her history with marcelene and Simon though marcelene has a ve
ry personal Grudge and more hatred for the empress than any of the other vampires I think Marcelina has never used her hypnotism Powers because they were used on Simon in the past and she has such a negative connotation with that power she finds it cruel and unseemly Marcy's use of vampire powers does vary for example she cannot heal anywhere near the rate that the moon can and it seems like she can't use most of vampire King's Powers at all so it's possible she can use the invisibility of the e
mpress but lacks the hypnotism power but I'm preferential to the interpretation that Marcy has access to the hypnotism but refuses to utilize it I really like how we didn't actually get a flashback to the empress controlling Simon it feels much darker and more disturbing to just leave those events to the viewers imagination than trying to show brief flashbacks of it in the past it's a case of nebulus implications being more powerful than depictions the hierophant maybe I am just biased toward an
imal Transformations but I adore this guy he is amazing but even as a person when he isn't transformed I love his old tininess and his wet uness between him and vampire King I'm not quite sure who I like more I think as a vampire hierophant takes the cake for me when crafted well there's something very engaging about that old school villain as a character on a whole I think vampire King edges it out though but really I love animals I mean I have a degree in Zoology after all and what's more amaz
ing and frightening than an angry koala in Boots climbing toward you how can I not love hierophant his strength is also formidable he seems to be second in power after vampire King himself if not for the moon's healing abilities Marceline may have lost in her fight against him the first time around what is interesting is that hierophant was willing to fight against the vampire King because of a fundamental disagreement in ideals that implies that either hierophant is willing to dismiss his old-f
ashioned nature for specific scenarios or that vampires are not traditionally a tiered hierarchy that serve a ruler considering that hierophant abides by old school rules to the point of death I'm betting on the latter vampires don't have any traditional type of organization to their society which allows them to join forces or divide however is convenient for them the moon the most bizarre of them all she might beat the vampire King for that description seems like her motivation or at least the
only motivation I could infer from her was taking out Marceline hence her ominous comment about Finn and Jake being in the moon's light she actually desired to follow them to get to Marceline the hideand-seek example Marceline used earlier to describe the moon's style is very apt Marceline was first seeking her and then the moon seeks to find Marceline tables have turned her desire to take out Marceline was quite strong she ignores sucking Fin's blood despite having the chance because killing Ma
rceline is the top top priority her abilities they seem really powerful not only does she have ridiculous healing capabilities to the extent that she can't even die in the Sun but she also has the ability to instantly exhaust her foes Marceline soul sucking allowed her to defeat the moon but without that skill staking only has the effect of temporarily disabling her I'm curious how somebody without Souls skills would go about the task of killing her when even the sunlight doesn't do the job woul
d you just have to seal her up somehow instead the moon is full of mysteries the vampire King his first individual Act is sucking the Fool's tooth out what an entrance I was left speechless my thought at that point was pondering just what is this guy about and then he proceeds to dance with the cow in a manner that's hard to describe and that's the thing about vampire King he is hard to describe that's what makes him so awesome and why he is definitely among my favorite Adventure Time characters
in general he is knowledgeable for sure and he is quite the philosopher he comes off as sophisticated except he also strips down to his undies and shouts prophetically that sort of behavior really reminded me of the earlier seasons of the show when characters tended to be far more rambunctious and bellowing in their mannerisms and it was a welcome call back often times he comes across as laid-back calm and logical but then he can also have quick outburst of anger because someone has an opinion
that differs from his dyamic is my go-to word for him you never know what he's going to do or say next but it doesn't feel insane or nonsensical he feels like a real solid character it's just that he's one of those characters which are hard to read into the mind of his powers they basically make him seem like he's a Jedi using the force at times Marceline absorbed him but she doesn't ever show that she has access to the sorts of powers he has that's interesting and I'm not quite sure on the reas
on for it perhaps they're just really Advanced Powers maybe now that she absorbed the vampire King's Essence rather than the vampire King himself she will be able to use these powers in later episodes some of them are super handy to have as a vampire creating this invisible wall around you that phases out light so you can hang out anywhere during the daytime that is pretty amazing so the vampire King actually pretty much states his association with a major Arcana himself for turning you would su
bjugate me to The Wheel of Fortune Wheel of Fortune imagery actually contains an angel an eagle a lion and a bull and hey his appearance is part human part lion part bird and while he's not part cow he certainly has an affinity for a cow as His companion that's pretty cool really shows you how you can take prior existing imagery and utilize it in interesting new ways what's different about the vampire King in contrast to the other vampires is that the vampire King wants to shed the association t
o his Arcana to the wheel of of Fortune which represents a repeating cycle of highs and lows but despite getting un vamped the vampire King remains in way in Marceline's mind in some manner trying to rid himself of destiny that is doomed to repeat he sort of pushed that property onto Marceline she even got turned back into a vampire in a way similar to the first time so did the vampire King succeed in his goal can you say the vampire King's identity transformed and he is now this lion or is it m
ore accurate to say the vampire King remains in Marceline's head and thus The Wheel of Fortune continues to spin fun question to think about the comedy of stakes was golden so many great interactions and vits of dialogue in a story one might think would be too dark and Moody to make you laugh that much Adventure Time can pull it off and still retain the full brunt of other feelings it's delivering the comedy was fairly constant throughout except in Marceline's back story which was light on the h
umor Marceline's Goen phrases and the fool are pretty much the only comical things in the episode everything stays and but jokes don't really do it for me anyway but that's fine because it is dealing with rather serious and downtrodden events so it would feel odd to jam-pack non-stop humor into such a backstory I'm actually glad they didn't go for more than what the episode could handle on the comedy and most of the other episodes have comedy oozing out the wazu anyway to cover for this especial
ly the first episode episode almost all the characters are involved with comedic moments in some way and Peppermint Butler freaking out over vampire King was the most standout moment of them all for me however the characters which are responsible for constantly maintaining the humor in Stakes to the point where I would label them as comic relief those characters were Finn and Jake throughout Adventure Time I almost always found that when Finn and Jake are delegated to be Side characters they do
a terrific job at driving the comedy Finn and Jake are heavily involved in this miniseries they are there for practically every leg of the journey that doesn't involve flashbacks but as far as character development or meaningful interactions with a Vamps go they don't really get any of that but every Time Finn and Jake are on screen performing their supporting roles they are still a complete Delight to watch and the majority of the comedy stems from their phrases and actions and of course the on
e time to get a solo mission to handle a vampire that might be the most hilarious moment in all of stakes that might even beat peppermint Butler's freak out Finn and Jake just make Stakes more lively and fun the whole story could probably be told without them honestly with only minor modifications but it would be much more bland and the pacing would not flow nearly as well in addition to much of the humor being removed open up murder hole buddy while the presence of Finn and Jake is not mandator
y it contributes a massive amount toward the cohesive iess and enjoyment factor and to me none of their time on screen felt like filler or wasted moments all right what were my criticisms of stakes well let me get my one gripe out of the way first all the animals that were being turned into zombie vampires what happened to them when we see the Dark Cloud ravaged the landscape the fleeing animals seem like they're normal not vampires typic vampire rules dictate that killing the head vampire Dev V
amps the minions one could say that marshling got left as a vampire because the demise of the vampire king and the Dark Cloud occurred simultaneously to Marceline turning if this assumption is correct and typical vampire rules apply otherwise everything makes sense the vampires are dead the zombie animals become unv and vampire King took the cow with him into the devamp machine just because he was fond of it and maybe it made him feel more comfortable in the moment leading to him shedding his id
ent Identity or perhaps if you extract all that aial vampire Grime that doesn't mean the minions will be unv and that's why vampire King took the cow with him but all this wasn't made clear and I would have preferred if we got a more clear indication as to what happened to all the turned animals we saw at the start of stakes we saw a lot of them it just felt like they were forgotten about us all a small mention would have been nice this is a small gripe and it is my only gripe now let's move on
to my larger scale criticisms for one you can't help but have this feeling that the story of stakes ended where it started I am aware that's the point and the wonderful son everything stays which is the theme of stakes the son is about how all past experiences remain with you and construct your identity but time adds new layers and slight changes I get that and it's a nice sentimental thought but there's still something about a coming full circle narrative that doesn't feel entirely satisfactory
Marceline becomes a vampire again has all the same Powers as before and while she says that she has grown up we have yet to actually see that this was actually a case of telling the audience rather than showing I'm sure we'll see it later but for now we have to take Marcy's word for it that sort of ending is just one where the figurative cake is lacking a little icing Marcy's sudden loss of motivation in the last episode that's not something that I have a problem with but it is something that I
want to discuss because after after my first viewing of stakes it didn't quite sit right with me her 180 felt out of the blue but I pondered about it and of course rewatched the series and my current thoughts are that it does make sense if you assume that Marcy's own attempt at rationalizing why she gave up is let's have a listen to Marceline's justification on wanting to wash her hands clean of the whole ordeal been just fighting the vampires in the first place screwed everything up sure screw
ed me up anyway and jeez Louise trying to fix it trying to fix me just made things a thousand times worse Marceline is mixing up her own anguish with the events she was involved with did she mess herself up potentially yes that's definitely arguable but that comment about everything else getting screwed up she protected humans from vampires she may very well have saved the entire human species why would she think it screwed everything else up when it resulted in saving the lives of her friends a
nd about it screwing her up she did befriend humans and even if it was short-lived she had a moment of community and solidarity with real companions for the first time since she was with Simon most likely she felt like she had a place she belonged to I think Marcy is simply engaging in a horrible attempt at rationalizing to her friends she is in a mental state of confusion and anguish of course but the rationale she voices is merely a scapegoat when iceing shows up is when she actually gives a r
eason closer to the truth anyway you don't want it on this fight this one's a loser and iceing gives Marceline her motivation and drive back by saying that the Cockroaches and rats that run in fear are the survivors and Marcy and him are survivors Ice King basically calls out the real reason for Marceline giving up she is afraid afraid of losing or in my opinion afraid of just having the cycle The Wheel of Fortune repeat itself again and repeat itself it does instead of being kind and leaving Ma
rceline be as PB and Finn did iceing basically provides brutal honesty and this is exactly what Marcy needed to kick her out of her state of feeling sorry for herself and being afraid Ice King's blatant honesty him basically calling Marceline a coward I love how this is what rejuvenates marcelene and gets her back into the action I actually think this works really well and I enjoyed that conversation between the two immensely Adventure Time is usually amazing at doing retcons to the point where
it makes retconning look like a good writing technique but my final criticism of stakes was simply that for Marceline it was a failed redcon at a character's backstory people do have facades they put on and often times individuals holding on to the most pain are the ones trying to look the most cheerful but still keeping that in mind the early Marcy and the current Marcy do not melt together well in my opinion Princess Bubblegum's progression from being a simple character to a complex one was am
azing and in my opinion it was actually foreshadowed and planned ahead of time from season 1 I think there are many signs to show this Marceline's Evolution on the other hand was not planned and retconning a central character's personality is a lot harder than retconning vague events or Side characters which is usually what Adventure Time excels at giving a brand new layer of backstory to a character that had many episodes about her already is a completely different type of task and immeasurably
harder to achieve without consistency issues arising now that being said Marcy being a prankster and a joker is perfectly fine and that personality trait fits really well with this new backstory the atmosphere Marceline has around her from the very start of Adventure Time was indicative of somebody who is insecure about important feelings and emotions Marceline has always been very wishiwashi when it comes to expressing her honest feelings in a direct way in the episode What Was Missing You Can
Tell Marceline has a tough time connecting with her friends through legitimate means and needs to put on a facade to be friendly with others as somebody who lost her mind mother was abandoned by her father figure L down by her true father spent time isolated trying to find friends while saving humans who merely feared her in return and then having to abandon the people she finally found a bond with it makes sense for Marceline to wear a joking nearly obnoxious exterior that covers a sheepish in
terior in general Marcia is also Brash doesn't think things through fully acts before thinking and all that stuff is maintained in stakes and in fact provides more ground work as to why these traits even exist these personality traits of marcelene were actually given context and enriched by the stakes miniseries now those are the positives and things that worked and things that Stakes improved on and enriched the problem for me is that other components of Marceline's early character do not have
consistency with what Stakes establishes about her Marceline being tormented by her state of existence there were no indications even mild or subdued ones that marcelene wished to return to being Immortal before thinking the vampire powers are more harm than good basically all the stuff that makes her decide to unv herself right at the start of stakes that all felt mostly out of nowhere and those character traits of hers were not sufficiently teased in early episodes when they easily could have
been if this story was planned out in the past marcelene basically took pride in her vampire powers and flaunted them calling herself the Vampire Queen in a very boastful manner which doesn't jive now that we know how she actually got the title and how horrid those events were remember when she joked about turning Jake into a zombie seriously that's a joke Marceline wouldn't make now that we know just how much she hates vampires and how they indirectly isolated her for who knows how long not onl
y did humans flee from her after she rescued them because they presumed she was a vampire which left her alone to fend for herself but after she finally found a community that felt like a home she had to abandon them as they left for another continent because she was afraid she would become a danger to them to insist that Marceline would take somebody's beloved family and turn them as a joke after she has faced multiple abandonment issues in her youth that's just too far and stands in the face o
f all the pain Marceline is supposed to be harboring the old Marceline and the new Marceline are not consistent even back in heat signature we have Marceline claiming that flight and invisibility are vampire powers in general when they're not they're specific to individual vampires and you could rationalize this and just say she's making stuff up but really let's drop the like act and the attempt to rationalize things that are better explained by simply this not being planned out in advance and
again in heat signature Marceline is joking about turning her companions into vampires which in the light of stakes feels like something she would never joke about Marceline's character was certainly revised for stakes and the transition was not silky smooth so a brief summary of my thoughts Stakes was awesome awesome awesome awesome seriously I am full of a you oh Stakes a so Marceline's redefined character identity doesn't meld well with the older episodes but on a whole as Jake would say it's
fine it's fine everything's fine it's fine it's fine it's fine the totality of the stakes experience was still wonderful full of things to ponder about and just so enjoyable I mean this is why my review of it is so long marcelene got revised and while the transition itself is rough I am content with this new rendition of Marceline's character going forward into the future I hope the revision of her character is put to good use and makes her more interesting and dynamic than before Marceline has
a lot to mull over and perhaps a newly formed psychosis to deal with and the rest of her Immortal Journey will not be easy I am eager to watch it [Music] unfold

Also at 4:01 Simon is referring to how he discovered how to summon Hudson Abadeer and what happened after was explained in Adventure Time: The Enchiridion & Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook!!! Spoilers: Marcy met some Werewolves (evolved from thylacines) and summoned Hudson; Hudson killed all of Marceline’s friends and then looks after her, at first Hudson is caring and loving and teachers her, but Marceline has trouble getting over killing her friends and once he eats her fries she freaks out and sends him back to the Nightosphere; after she then wonders Ooo in search of Simon and ends up at what would later be: Beautopia, she meets Schwablthe dog and then leaves and finds those humans.

I really appreciate the work that was put into this review ;)

@TREYtheExplainer

Just finished watching! Awesome extremely well researched and well-though-out review :) as always! Great job man!

Actually she used the Vampire King's power of telekinesis, if you remember "Evicted", she lifted the picture with her mind to reveal the " 'M' for Marceline"

@therealMCMiSFiT

I think Marceline's arc makes perfect sense. When she was introduced, she had been alone for a long time. She had probably grown jaded over the years due to the constant fear that people had towards her. When she met Finn and Jake they showed her a new view of humanity. Their constant morality was something that she viewed as young and foolish which is why she tries to trick Finn into doing things that he thinks is evil. She believes that his morality is a cover or that all good people are wrong. The more time she spends around Finn and Jake the more she misses her old good natured self which is what inevitably leads to her desire to become human again. Her hope in humanity was restored and what she saw as her evilness. I think a big theme with Marceline is that she wants to regain the blissful ignorance of youth, something that Finn symbolizes, something that was stolen from her in a number of ways.

@jorgeupegui4026

If you remember in the first episode Marci is introduced in after she kicks out Finn and Jake they sing a house hunting song where it is said Oh, Marceline, Why are you so mean? Marceline: I'm not mean, I'm a thousand years old, And I just lost track of my moral code. After all of those traumatic experiences and isolation i can believe her facade would become warped with her vampire powers where she would make jokes but after being reintroduced to friends and society she starts to remember her old self and revert to her true nature which also explains her diary songs as well.

@tutlens

My headcanon is that the Marceline we meet in 'Evicted' is deeply depressed and just coming off the breakup with Ash, which was supposed to be her chance at a normal life, and this is why her brash facade was in such full swing at the time. It came with actions of dubious morality, cruel pranking, and manipulative behavior. I think if you see the way her relationship with Finn and Jake grows in those early episodes, from running them out of their homes in 'Evicted', pranking them in 'Henchman' and 'Go With Me', to rejecting her toxic friends in 'Heat Signature', and to gracefully accepting their apologies in 'Marceline's Closet', it becomes clear that Finn and Jake in all their childlike and loving nature have a healing effect on Marceline. It's a slow burn, but I think if you look at it in the context of a woman climbing out of a pit of self-hatred and into a headspace wherein she feels worthy of being loved again, her evolution as a character makes complete sense. Also, don't forget that Marceline was made a vampire around the age of twenty, which means that the last flashback occurs some 980 years before current events. That's a lot of time for a brain to get stupid about things.

Something I just realized... If Peppermint Butler was the one in charge of disposing of the gunk in the first place, and he was knowledgeable of Vamps in the first place....then why did he dispose of it so carelessly that the Vamps were able to come back? Does anyone think its possible that he allowed them to resurrect in the first place? When PB asks him what he did with the gunk, he never answers and it is left very vague. I mean, he certainly can be an evil little critter....

@MrAizakku

She lost track of her moral code - of course she'd mock Jake and turn him into a zombie :D

@DirtyLaundry776

Did anyone else notice that princess bubblegum was counting in German when they did jumping jacks

@InfiniteProdu

Maybe her jokes are subtle criticisms of herself more than jokes? If she viewed herself as a monster, maybe she liked to use morbid humor to remind herself of what she could do. Maybe I'm over reading it, but I've patronized myself through humor over things about myself that I don't really like, and I know some people do it too, so it comes off as what they were going for.

Mabey the phrase "Somthing big"is in reference of the catalyst comet.

@Qsalis

Stages of Grief. The theme is Stages of Grief

@MrTheVraptor

Actually, if you read Marcy's Super Secret Scrapbook, it says that Simon brought on an ice age that Marcy hibernated through. So it probably wasn't Darren.

@Sir_Crow

I think her jokes were her playing a facade and being a stereotypical vampire. Even in tragedies, some people who enjoy dark humor make jokes about it, even with traumatic experiences with that.

@ironmuro

I'm not entirely sure I agree with Marceline's personality not messing well with her early character and here is why: You mention that it makes sense for her joking nature to be a facade in order to make friends but what if you look at it a bit differently. Think of Marcelines's early character as not being a facade to make friends but to keep people at a healthy distance. In her early character I think she may have wanted people to fear her, at least enough for them to stay away from her. The reason she would joke about turning Jake into a zombie is BECAUSE she understands the pain and fear. She had felt like she was a danger to the community that left her. I do not think it a stretch to think Marceline was afraid of getting close to others for the same reason, she thought she would be a danger to them. This only changes when Finn and his friendly nature makes Marceline regain that sense of community she lost and that is what brings about Marceline's want to be mortal again. She is feeling closer to people than she has in years, she has reconnected with Simon and Princess Bubblegum. It is because of these connections that she is no longer comfortable with being the vampire queen and hence why she would want to devamp herself. In summary she could have easily felt comfortable and boastful early on because she felt alone, the power of being the vampire queen being really her only comfort in her loneliness. Think of her vampirism like a security blanket. However, after Finn made the effort to connect with her, she began to let the facade fade, which lead to her reconnecting with Simon and Bubblegum, which lead to her wanting to return to the point of her life where she was mortal. She has not felt this sense of community since she was mortal, and part of her may feel that she can not have that feeling and her vampirism at the same time. Through the events of stakes she that she can have both at the same time. She was returned to her previous personally, have kept her vampirism, and has discovered that she is not a danger to her friends. She finally has fully dropped the facade.

@Cangeltibon

I somewhat disagree with your take on Marcy's development, she sung from very early on that she wasn't evil and simply lost track of her moral code. Being a vampire is want keeps her from aging so during the events with the humans she was probably around 19. She's been a vampire drifter for almost 1000 years hanging out with ghost and other monsters that she knew she couldn't hurt but at the same time couldn't connect to on mug of an emotional level, so before she reconnected with PB and made friends with Finn and Jake her moral compass was at an all time low.

@shady6ix275

I love how Marcy met and protected those humans who would eventually find the Islands.

@emilyr6510

I have this headcannon that Everything Stays happened the night before the apocalypse. Marcelines dreams were of the mushroom war and Hunson warning her. After Marceline and her mom fell asleep, it was bombed and when she wakes up, her mom is dead while she is in her lap and her home is destroyed.

@leslielovei3504

She hides behind a mask she thought she was content with her self but then uncovered those bad memories that were buried in her conscious and she finally finished excepting all the changes she went through
