Streamed 2 days ago

good afternoon everybody welcome back to Schwab coaching for our next topic it's Street Smart Edge to think or Swim web I am your host Kevin Horner as usual today I am joined by my colleague and friend Schwab coach Michael Fairbourn good afternoon Mike how are you doing great Kevin good to be back with you looking forward to our topic of discussion uh today so should be good as am I uh in fact everybody today's focus in utilizing think or swim web will be on charts we're going to talk quite a bi
t about uh developing charts and and customizing those charts utilizing the available customizations at our fingertips to get everything set and ready for you so that you're comfortable doing those adjustments on your own uh we're going to lead off though with some uh reminders of what's available to you here at Schwab on the Schwab coaching channel uh in the YouTubes as well as our calendar page so we got a lot to get to with with you all everyone we are going to spend the first 5 minutes kind
of level setting though because there's been some significant developments and changes that we want to make you all aware of so let's go ahead and get right down to business now first of all I do want to point out we do have Ben Watson in the chat so thank you to Ben Watson for being here he will be uh there to manage and answer questions in the uh Q&A that Mike and I are unable to get to but please feel free to continue posting for the show Mike and I do want to keep an eye on it and we intend
to get to some of your specific questions in fact our goal is to spend the final 15 minutes today uh with your Q&A specifically so feel free to load that up for us now with that let's just get to some of the uh nuts and bolts details just remember that our discussion here is exclusively informational and educational uh remember we're not endorsing any particular approach to the market or security of course and further we want you just to uh take the reminder that our process here is centered on
education that's ultimately what we're looking to do and get you just a little bit more familiar with what's available to you here at Schwab now um beyond that we do have a series here so the first takeaway is that you have access to archived VI uh views that we have made previously so uh we want to make sure that you know that there are a lot of opportunities for you to get acquainted not just with think or Swim web as we're going to do today but thinker swim desktop as well and the archive at
the YouTube channel is a great place to do that so let's start start out here by coming over to our uh Street Smart Edge platform I'm going to um navigate to it rather quickly here and I'm going to do that because uh there's been some developments in use of streets smart Edge that we want to make everybody clear on just to this process of Shifting over to think or Swim is one that likely requires a fair bit of effort on your part the viewer the user of Street Smart Edge so first of them is this
Schwab coaching link we used to to have this of course titled Schwab live this Schwab coaching link takes you directly to our coaching calendar now this is a great place not just to set your reminders email reminders adding them to your calendar but you can go back in time searching through your preferred coaches here Mike uh does a number of shows for us obviously if we wanted to search back on the shows that he's done we've got going back to uh we've got the Monday coming up here but we can go
back on our calendar or we can even slip over to our month view so that we've got them all visually here for us and then if you just hover over these everyone you're going to see that we've got specific details available so let's go to for example the fifth and I'm just going to click on this real quickly we've got the whole process here the breakdown of what was covered plus the on demand visual for you so you can go right into this okay now this is really handy for you if you're going to try
and find old segments where we've covered specific topics that can be really helpful as it relates to these think or Edge to think or Swim conversations as well so keep that in mind everybody now also one of the big changes that's been implemented here in Street Smart Edge is our new drop-down menu It's the platform transition tools dropdown this is helpful because it's going to start to bridge the gap for you everybody bringing you along for the ride getting you a little bit better acquainted a
nd this is a great place to start so for you edge users we have a number of available details for you introduction videos we've got demonstrations on think or Swim you've got the think or Swim Learning Center Mike there are so many details available here we can't cover them all it's just a really excellent reminder that we are working really really hard to get you all up to speed and ready to go to use thinker swim when it's time for you absolutely Kevin there there is so much to cover and that
that's really helpful to just to the average uh Trader invest because there's just so many uh capabilities and different things that each Trader investor might want to utilize right but it's difficult to get through all of those in a 40 minute discussion here with everybody as we discuss everything else but uh you know just be mindful if you have any specific questions too as we address this certainly you know the chat box is open I can try to help Ben as well uh as we go through that too so yea
h you know Mike one of the big ones we fielded last week was the import of watch list details and saved orders your not check this out everybody we've got guides that are going to take you through that process here again like Mike just pointed out we we want to provide as best we can a service in the educational offering here that gives you what you're looking for on those live sessions but gives you also the ability to fall back into your resources at your fingertips here so play with these thi
ngs go through these transitional details everyone and spend the time to get acquainted as I have stated on just about every one of these segments with you Mike we talk an awful lot about just the requirement of us to spend the time to understand the tool utilize it and I just try to bring you all back to the first time you saw Street Smart Edge it probably looked a little daunting at that point too but through usage and customization and uh trading on the platform these are the things that are
going to help to get you far better acquainted with the tools at our fingertips absolutely Kevin well said I think a lot of the discussions you and I do each and every week and a lot of the stuff that you outline in fact if if folks are just able to come back on a week toe basis within our class that will really serve as kind of that repetition to help everybody kind of get positioned and really kind of understand things better because we do tend to hit different areas we've hit quite a bit not
to mention where Kevin's taking us right here there are playlists that we've created for this class specifically that you can go through and watch and and maybe plue in on specific topics as well there uh that Kevin has has a titled there uh within each one of these so just uh be mindful of that in fact I'll try to throw that out in the chat here as well excellent uh and I think it's also helpful everybody yes we highlight streets smart Edge details things you're familiar with an edge and try to
bring you into those in think or Swim uh desktop and think or Swim web but the takeaway I want to offer is the reminder that there are a number of ways for you to get familiar with this tool getting started with thinker swim is a wonderful one you're going to have Cameron May for multitude of those shows obviously uh and then we've got the Thinker swim web where Brent Moors is spending the time getting us acquainted further so we are trying to utilize this as the way to bridge that gap for you
edge daily users into thinker swim web and thinker swim desktop um so we're going to try and answer a lot of those questions but you do have a a lot of other stuff going on here now the final note that I want to give you everybody is we've recently uh made some changes to Inc incorporate in our uh message detail here here I'm just going to highlight this in our description down below we have provided some details here for you so you're going to find new criteria new resources so look for resourc
es I think it's actually in the existing screen we're teaching from today Mike uh where we've got those new resources added in the descriptions below so be sure to check this out everybody um there's going to be additional resources in description as well as in Street Smart Edge so with that Mike let's get down to the business at hand covering the chart functionality in think or Swim web as we uh want to initiate here today so first of all I'm going to bring us back uh to think or Swim web um I'
m going to go ahead and click on there we go so first of all this was launched from the trade dropdown menu in streets in schwab.com excuse me so uh under Trade and trading platforms we get to think or swim web and Mike as you could see here from this layout one of the big takeaways I think that a lot of users have come to realize is that the chart functionality here is a little bit um I don't want to say lesser but maybe a little more uh clean or streamlined because you're limited in scope as f
ar as how many charts you might have visual access to immediately you it's really true Kevin uh you know it's really centered and I'd say focused on really kind of the the the core basics of charting and sometimes that's all you need uh sometimes that's all people want so it can be a good quick way to get into uh the web and utilize the web of course there is more you know with the Thinker swim platform for sure I mean that's that's where all the capabilities are uh in terms of um just additiona
l tailoring that the trader or investor might want to do but you're right it is limited it kind of has to be limited because it's not a software program per se it's not like software that's loaded like the platform and so doesn't have that capability but it does have you know quite a bit there at least in terms of just like I mentioned core basics of trading or charting that I think is is sufficient for me in many many cases you know uh when when when that's all I'm looking for but curious your
thoughts on that is it is it enough for you would you say as well I think so uh for the most part of course as a a Trader who uh has a multitude of things that I like to look at include various time frames I probably find my personal usage the desktop application to be a little bit more in line with my preferences and the speed with which I like to navigate and detach things around so I do um you know what for example where we have the grid here where we can go to three charts simultaneously we
can see a chart of uh you know three different positions altoe maybe one of them is apple one of them could be the SPX another could be the ndx uh this this can be really helpful for a lot of Traders but other Traders are looking for maybe a little bit more access even still and I think that's where if you find something like this to be insufficient you might want to navigate over to thinker swim desktop um if you're looking for more than what you have access to on this page for example precisel
y and I'm sorry I probably asked that totally wrong when I asked that question I mean in just in terms of like if you're just looking for real basic stuff because uh I think the web does a good job of that but I am totally with you on on the platform there's just so much there there's just different ways like you'd mentioned you know you can set up charts specifically the way you want to see it and multitude of charts too so you don't have kind of that barrier like you just pointed out here whic
h I think is a great point because that's as many charts as you're going to see there on web right it's true yeah that's about the max that we've got at our fingertips so again if this is something more that you're looking for more I'm going to encourage you to make sure you lean in a little more to think or Swim desktop now I did have a request to make sure that we highlighted how we got to this now I gave you some audio steps but I figure we should give you the full rundown here everybody so I
just want to highlight this we are in the schwab.com account and under the mega navigation up above is trade Tab and then over here to the right we have the trading platforms page now we can click on platforms or you'll notice this little icon next to think or Swim web that's what implies the uh pop out of nature of this tool right so you click that and that's how you end up utilizing or visually seeing think or Swim web now we are in paper money here everybody which is quite notable we want to
be in paper money uh you can easily navigate over to live trading and I say easily Mike it's a big important call out because not everybody wants to be accessing live trading so easily that's right yeah and just to your point right there it's so easy to do you have to almost just remind yourself or just do a quick glance hey you know before I place that trade what is it highlighted on is is it on paper money just like Kevin's is right now or is it live money just just so you know you know if yo
u you think you're if you think you're placing a paper trade you happen to be in live money well that's how you're going to find out you going to remember when you signed in but maybe just a good idea just to double check as you're getting use to using uh toss web I think it's a good point you bring up Kevin yeah I think I think so as well um Mike let's talk a little bit about some of the customizations available to us here in think or Swim web I'm going to bring us back to a onechart visual jus
t for the uh in the interest of ease and I want to start talking about some of the basic settings and those are the details in the upper right corner here Mike so real briefly just kind of take us through what we see up here in the upper right where we've got what appears to be time frames and settings and I'll have you just kind of walk us through some of these details and I'm going to uh provide a step by step as we do it oh sounds good yeah so if we are going to start uh let's see I guess on
the right side there uh there each one of those is as you were just pointing to is we've got like a three-year listed there is a little drop down just to the right of that threeyear it's really kind of hard to see uh or each one of those yeah and by the way yeah you can get to either one of those just by clicking on the drop down ex clicking anywhere near it uh and it will show it but yeah there you go Kevin you got it right there and it's got uh basically yep one day one week one month and then
of course you can go back and look at different uh time frames as well there you go and that's pretty extensive that does go give you a Max as well Max data so has the capability to log up just log um I should say load up load up as much data as the platform does which is really cool so that that's another really kind of nice feature if somebody was just looking at back testing as well you'd have all that data there at your fingertips yeah agreed and yet um for some of us it's still insufficien
t it's just not it's not to suggest that it doesn't work it clearly does but you're kind of limited as we've said I I just want to point this out because inevitably we point out some of the ease of functionality here and the slight limitations are that you know some of those customizations go away some of the things that we have access to in think or Swim desktop for example um you know things like uh the ability to define the the time frame I want to see not five years or 10 but I want to see t
he next you know the last um 20 or more right uh or um I want a customizable minute chart so instead of five minute bars or one hour bars I want a 36 minute bar um something like that Mike you know those are the things that can be done in desktop that can't be done in thinker swim web uh but that said many of you are going to find that thinker swim web is more than adequate for the way you like to do your business but if you found that it's insufficient well then my encouragement is hey we got t
o spend a little more time with the Thinker swim desktop application so Mike some of the other details we can talk about here under uh settings I'm going to try and get us to that point there we are settings allows us to highlight the extended hours detail right entirely important for so many Traders this is one of the default settings in think or Swim highlighting and showing the the price action in a visual chart reflection uh for both regular markets as well as uh the pre-market and aftermark
et which is a big issue because on on in thinker swim desktop that happens by default as well and in Street Smart Edge you actually have to activate that uh aftermarket pre-market stuff so all of that defaults in here there's some settings that we can play with Mike are there any specifics that you want to call out as it relates to the Chart settings here in thinker swim web you know um I was looking at you know it's it's interesting there there are some really interesting ones there Kevin but t
o the point that you've been making this whole time is that well they're limited right um we're seeing maybe uh gosh maybe a fifth of what you might get possibly on the platform there's just a lot more on the platform in terms of you know settings and and stuff like that but uh just looking at it I think one we'd be able to visually see pretty quickly uh you know that we've got is um well uh we already have the the high and lows don't we on there yep might be kind of hard to see but I think the
default too Kevin is that all the boxes are checked there yes and yeah so it's kind of like you could take them off and see what if you prefer it that way but uh if you've got it all checked I think that's just the standard default yeah and and something like the highs and lows you know here it's calling it out you can see that white line here it might not be able to see it as clearly as we would like to present it we can use the icons down below uh we've got these um uh uh magnifiers if you wil
l so I can zoom I can click the magnifier and kind of zoom in and move along the chart here utilizing the arrows at the end again some of you might not find this to be the easy navigation you're looking for in your chart functionality uh and that's okay because while this is going to work for a lot of you it's probably not going to work for everybody we recognize that so um there's there's still again uh a need to determine which of these platforms you prefer based on how you kind of like to go
through your process so uh let's talk Mike around the study details here because you know the majority of the study details are things that you're going to have access to whether it's in schwab.com usage schwab.com charting think or Swim web think or Swim desktop a lot of those study details Mike are all going to be the same yes they are yeah you're going to find that and if you if you've done those studies in the platform or in the web there're you know you're still going to you're still going
to see them show up on the charts here Kevin but you know based on last week's discussion it was really interesting because we we were looking at scans uh pretty in depth but you'll notice that when we're looking at actually CH charting here there's just a lot more criteria to choose from now not as much as the platform of course we're not going to take it that far but there is still quite a bit more and more things are getting added all the time you got different categories on Down the Line pop
ular studies up front all the way down into volatility studies but a really cool way to do it by the way if if you knew the name of it too Kevin right at the top there is just that find a study you can just type it like right in there for example you could type in like s for simple moving average it should pull up a moving average I believe there it is right to it yeah there's like an exp or oh I'm sorry we don't have normally that's for the exponential but I'm thinking the probability of expiri
ng in the money that's or the cone of that okay so that's a different study with which I am less familiar me too I was thinking exponential moving average but yeah you got it that was uh yeah MH what but um you know what I I think the reminder here is ultimately from a study basis if if you've got studies you want to work with go ahead get them added get them customized same thing with your draw tools let's highlight this real quickly Mike uh the process for customizing because I want to make su
re that we just mention it I think a lot of users are familiar enough these days with uh the basics of navigation recognizing when you see those gear icons those are your act action buttons right you can get a lot of detail from it when we clicked on what we did here was um I'm going to go back to studies real fast I got moving average added so I'm just going to hit that little gear icon and here I get to Define everything so this is different a little bit from something like Street Smart Edge w
here you have to Define your moving average in advance you have to say I want a simple moving average I want a smooth moving average I want an exponential moving average here in think or Swim web you can actually put it on and then Define it here uh with the drop down so you could go simple exponential take your pick um the time frame we had a 50 period and what is it relying on a closing valuation which is most common uh then you've also got access to your color pin wheel just like you would in
just about every other platform but one of the things that I've noted Mike right off the Jump here as a as an educator as a host one of the things that that I like is having these lines jump off the screen at me and I like to increase the weighting and thickness of those lines but Mike it doesn't seem like that's one of my available uh customizations in here as it relates to my draw tool right like the thickness and things along those lines exactly exactly and so that's that's just going to be
a category that is missed but then you have a lot of capabilities at least in terms of the platform all the way up to you know a five length width uh I should say a width there and then uh in addition to that too Kevin I mean you do have I mean as you're clicking on those you can you can change the style too sometimes I think it's it's interesting to have like you know a drawing tool that might be like a uh sort of a dotted line so to speak or a dashed line so then again so there there we go the
re are more those are some of the capabilities that you get on the platform specifically to this and and like we were even pointing out before on those highs and lows some of the things aren't as exactly easier to see uh like with a platform of course we can you know increase the font sizes and things along those lines too yeah it's it's a it's a more robust tool in terms of the customization um that's available to us and I think for a lot of us users of um thinker swim desktop as an example now
we are at a spot where uh it's it's not as much about um searching and finding what it is I'm looking for you know we often now have an understanding of where those things reside and we can get to them easily and I think that's really the biggest thing um that is uh uh an issue if you will for new users coming into thinker swim desktop or thinker swim web is really just the knowledge of where those things reside and yes you know Street Smart Edge the the process was one of launching and loading
all your tools um and then getting in and utilizing those tools so you could actually get to a Bare Bones version of The Tool uh in Street Smart edge and a lot of Traders like that just because they could launch just the ones they wanted and that's just not what's available in something like think or Swim desktop you know because as you could see if I was to bring this over for you real quick everybody you know thinker swim desktop has got a lot going on obviously but it's it's really just a ma
tter of knowing where those things reside Mike uh and you know for you Traders out there who are so familiar and comfortable with something like the um uh streets smart edges tab functionality right which is the ability to create in a single chart window multiple tabs with multiple time frames that's really available to you here in thinker swim desktop as well Mike it's just not known as tabs we do it with grids in thinker swim and it's a pretty convenient way of doing it once you understand the
process I think again it's a process of understanding how does think or Swim think and once I understand that now I can really start to work to customize that's right good transition there Kevin too because that's exactly a point that I think resonate with a lot of Traders investors is just the the ease the differences first of all but then maybe the ease specifically looking uh at the uh The Thinker swim platform there and how we've used in fact we've talked about this previously but how to us
e those grids how to save those grids they're easily accessible uh across I don't know 30 or plus different grids that you can have I you have more than that but visually you can just you pop that down you can see 30 different design specific chart setups that you might be very uh you know familiar with uh you like to see those kinds of studies you can easily and quickly you know get from one study set to another by like two clicks yeah ABS absolutely uh I am a many of you are a lot like me ever
ybody you're a Trader who wants to see various time frames uh and and I do that with the that grid as we noted Mike the the most I think most Traders and users of thinker swim desktop probably rely on something like this even if it's not for looking through various time frames like I have here which moves me from a well let me just do this let me go back to my grid view right here's my four chart grid my first is a daily chart my next is a 5 minute bar my next is a 1H hour and then I've got a we
ekly and if I wanted to Maxim ma imize those I just pick one of them maximize the cell and then you'll notice up here I've got the arrows that allow me to navigate through and so even Mike if I was using and incorporating all of the grids at my fingertips here and there's a lot as you can see I have access to Quick math says 32 charts all at once Mike that's quite a bit but I could absolutely navigate through pretty quickly um but there's another way I could do that too right cuz you know while
I might have 32 on this I still have the access to detach functionality as well don't I you do yeah so you can actually I guess technically detach uh you know 32 at a time and lay those out y really cover your sh your screens with charts there but uh yeah you got that too Kevin and actually if you can click on that just one more time just that icon up top sorry I'm sorry the one just to the left of it the actual grids yes yeah so just to be clear what I was mentioning before too was just what yo
u've got like set up there exactly like you've got those sectors and you can have styles in there different uh drawings whatever going back and forth like let's say you had one just RSI or one you know with uh moving averages multiple moving averages it's just that simple to store those on there in fact I like to do this Kevin I like to have one that's like a daily chart it's like a split grid chart right and so you're only using two charts they're both side by side left and right that is one's
daily one's weekly I can take a look at the daily the just hit one of those arrows just to the left and that would put me over to the weekly chart I hit it again it puts me back to the Daily or I can have them both side by side pulled up at the same time so like you know to your points that you the points you've been making here Kevin just a lot of functionality there folks you know with that yeah yeah that's the hardest thing that for me to recognize was the the freedom of customizing or the fr
eedom to move around and play with all of this I as I showed you guys um when I did a I did a um detach of my chart uh my for chart grid and I threw it over to my other monitor well I've just relaunched it by changing it from uh what was my for chart grid to my SPX and sectors grid which gives me uh the visual of all 11 us domestic sectors uh individually plus an S&P 500 so if at any point I wanted to you know keep this loaded and on a separate monitor mic I might do just that and then I just wh
en you know as necessary throughout my day I'm just flipping through things and just looking at charts playing with my arrows moving from one space to the next and seeing what I can learn as I do that so that's you know again I'm not suggesting that this is the way that that Traders do it this is the way that I might go about it um but again I hope what you're taking away is the the freedom to build these uh approaches and layouts uh one of the key components to having it set up this way Mike is
that I do not have these charts speaking to one another each of them are set up with the broken chain or the unlink to ensure that these symbols are hard set and do not get changed for me yeah I love that and that that makes so much sense specifically it looks like based on what you're doing there Kevin looking at specific sectors of course they're all different they're not just different time frames of the same sector right or different studies of the same I should say symbol uh they're comple
tely different and that just enables you to view all I mean just have just like a whole screen possibly you let's take if we were to detach this right have a whole second monitor just dedicated towards all of these exactly towards all of these other details with with sectors or whatever it is we might be looking at uh it could be just markets uh broad broad markets it could be let's say for example all kinds of different Securities as well yeah it's true Mike um you know we we've highlighted cha
rting as our process for the today uh one of the key takeaways for chart users in think or Swim desktop is the relationship to studies and it's one of the things that I struggled with a lot initially because the ease of adding studies in uh Street Smart Edge is um a little uh it takes a little EXT extra effort here in thinker swim desktop the first time you're going through it and the reason I say that everybody is that you're familiar with some of the functions like hide and show in Street Smar
t Edge that allow you to launch all the tools all the studies you want and then close them or hide them rather not just like put them in Shadow mode if you will right you click it and that study is not visible so if I could have all my moving averages on and I could just close one or or Shadow it so I no longer see the 20 at any given moment but what I've done is into my studies I went ahead and created a multitude of these uh study sets which incorporate the moving averages combinations that I'
m looking for so for example Mike I've got one here that is the 10 and the 50 moving average together I'm on a weekly chart so I need to go back to a daily for this to make a whole lot of sense I suppose but you know one of them 10 and 50 one of them that's just the 10day one of them that's got all three the 20 the 50 and the 200 and I can toggle them at my discretion but there's another way that you can do that toggle pretty easily whether it's through save studies like this Mike uh we can also
incorporate the quick jump functionality here which appears in the shadow formation and you can also pin that right to the top Mike do you use this as well for your um process you know I really haven't but I I I could see how it'd be useful for you because I think that's a tool you know correct me if I'm wrong that was within Street Smart Edge where you could just click easily click a a button and to get up you know a tailored moving average one that you frequently will use isn't that right I t
hought I might have seen you do that before okay yeah it's it's a hide and show functionality that made it easy for a an educator like me to pinpoint the study I want to have and not have to load it um and and as a user of the tool the way around it for me the what I found was creating these study sets that I frequently accessed and it may have taken me a bit to build those study sets Mike but you know what I learned about building the study sets was the process of doing it really solidified my
understanding of the platform it forced me to get comfortable with this process and the more I did it the faster I became and now I've got a whole list of the studies I need I know where I have to go and I listen I know we're seeing a lot of the same comments everybody you're not alone here okay we've done I have done this very recently I made this transition in October of last year everybody where um I had no option but to make this transition and and that process yeah it was it easy initially
no but the time I devoted to that process and getting it built the way that I wanted man was that an it was for me fun and now that it's got I've got it built the way that I like it well now I know how to go about making changes along the way so I'm happy with what I have access to visually Mike streets um thinker swim desktop now for me resembles what street smart Edge resembled for me as well see and were able to do that and I love the point that you brought up earlier and that is is that you
went through an actual process of just creating something uh that you could keep on the platform and I think that's really one of the key the key points is that if people can just go in uh just encourage everybody to do that you know if there's something you that you've seen us do just go through the process yourself of actually doing it and you know the platform is great because it will save the information once you put it on first of all you'll understand it but if you close it down uh the sof
tware smart enough that it remembers everything it remembers all the changes that you made will pop back to the same which is a really nice feature uh because it you know it can um just keep a similar chart up there that you'd be frequently using and frequently closing down I'm sure I've got charts on some of my computers I've never changed for a long time but yet because I didn't need to because the platforms always remembered it so uh just tying it back into your point Kevin just in terms of j
ust the efficiency of it you know if you just take that early time and try to invest that that initial time and some of these techniques we're showing you here and you might find some other ones as well uh it'll actually be a faster process it's actually really really quick once you get it down but you're right it is it is a steep uh learning curve there Kevin I I can appreciate that for sure and you know what I recognize that too um having gone through this as a user of both platforms we had a
request and I we all told you hey we're going to try and get to your um uh specific questions in the queue so let's take a couple of minutes to do this one of those Quest was to see what how can um how is it the street smart Edge can look like uh thinker swim web and a desktop as it was I'm showing here so let me just do that here on my left this is my street smart Edge over on the left and over on the right there is my think or Swim desktop Mike they look pretty darn close I would suggest at le
ast in terms of visual colors and so forth let's take our viewers quickly through those customizations because again I'll admit I think of customizing an edge maybe more intuitive to the user but the think or Swim is not to it's not to suggest that those customizations aren't there for you it is merely uh a reminder of how we go about it so Mike we've talked about the gear icon we can click the gear in our chart settings and we can make these changes for the majority of everything at our fingert
ips right here we really can it's so fast and easy to do and and once you know like you clicked on that you can see what's there I mean one of the first things I did Kevin when I first got into this site I clicked on the wheel and then I just started kind of thinking about what are the main tabs here okay oh this is where I've got the axes here of course we have a general tab but I can make adjustments to price to time what the chart looks like right yep uh the next set of tabs over of course I
can look at there's a time frame as well there like much of thinker swim there are different places that you can view this you know you can view time frames but there is also a time frame here of course appearance this is where you would go in to change the appearance of the candlesticks yep right and you get the little preview off to the right whether it's candlesticks or anything else there is a chart type drop down there it's not just candle you have a variety of different chart data a visual
of what you might want to look at and then finally Kevin just hey this is where I go and have special adjustments to equities options Futures and borx we really don't get into those other those other two but uh a lot of great information right here and it was all within that wheel so all you got to really remember is the wheel and then the tabs and then just go into the tab and then you can scan what's in there that's exactly right Mike I think the majority of the time that I spent initially wa
s here in the color scheme and I and we see a lot of this commentary from you all in the chat function so coming in here to uh play with your your whether if you're a Candlestick user uh playing with the color scheme if you click the box you'll get access to the um the um pastel colors if you hit more you're going to have the full access to the whole pin wheel there so go ahead and pick your your preferred colors notice here um you also have uh freedom to change whether you want those candles fi
lled in or not so play with those a little bit do you want to see the the Wicks or the Tails associated with your intraday price action those are big details what about whether you want to see um the Grid on your chart everybody look mine is very plain vanilla right no lines in time no price lines either so the moment I come in here to uh appearance I can put the grid back on hit apply hey there I've got it so now I've got the Grid in there and I can see things a little more basically I've got a
line at every 100 points on the SPX there's 47 48 49 5,000 if you want those details by all means um as Mike mentioned lot of these changes you make everybody the moment you make them they're considered held so to speak and then we close out the platform you launch it tomorrow morning it's going to load the same way same study details up there uh the uh the charts that you had swung from maybe the left monitor over to the right monitor are going to be launching on that screen as well Mike um th
ere's again these These are details that I think over time you're going to become much faster at um Mike one of the questions we absolutely need to address in the queue is about going through the process of making this transition from Street Smart Edge over to thinker swim desktop or thinker swim web one of those processes involves saying yes I am ready to take account a from Street Smart Edge over to think or Swim that's a big step and it means that count a once you make that transition will no
longer be able to access Account Details In streets Edge so an encouragement if you have multiple accounts would be to start with your least active account make the transition with that least active account spends that time getting better acquainted you can run these platforms simultaneously assuming your platform your desktop application that being your computer will manage it for you if that's the case as we would expect then you can absolutely run them concurrently and take your learnings fr
om your street smart Edge version and try to build those into to your thinker swim desktop version that's one of the processes that I underwent uh myself Mike I I spent a fair bit of my time um having to go through you know like like my traditional workflow and saying all right this is what I do now how do I do that in thinker swim and again just kind of making those steps Mike was the biggest thing that benefited me as a Trader yes love that love that point Uh Kevin too yeah you know there ther
e is uh there is that challenge initially I'm just reading some of the comments here just getting up to speed but I mean that's one thing you know that I know you went through specifically and I mean I did as well and and Ben in the chat did and all the coaches did but it's it if you just take a little bit of time you can really get I mean honestly two or three times doing the same thing it should really start to then resonate with you you'll know where it's at you'll know those adjustments uh t
hat can be made Kevin one one um question in the chat too yes was just real quick while we're here yeah uh to save uh how to save it or save a uh to save a screen a chart uh had an approach I was going to just mention another one too that we kind of talked about specifically but that upper uh box in the the grids that is yeah we just click there once you have the chart that you want up right with all the studies on it the time frame however many grids you've got two or three whatever the case is
you can just go right down to save grid as and uh yeah just scroll down it's just below the there you go exactly and if you and then it leaves it up here for you for uh later View later access right whatever you've named it just like you've got SPX and sectors that was one that that's got a chart and however many uh you know specific chart that's got in there what I'm referring to that as is grids uh but whatever the case might be that's where you'd find it right there yeah and it would just li
st those at the top you got it love it um lots of good questions in here why do I have to uh spend my time going through this process why do I have to U make these changes why am I being forced into it these are all fair questions to ask everybody listen uh is it a business decision to make this change I think it's safe to suggest that every decision a firm the size of Schwab makes is a frequently going to be considered a business decision that's also fair to suggest everybody that stated uh Str
eet Smart Edge will be re tied and there's no way we can go around that so thinkers swim desktop thinkers swim web schwab.com is going to be there for you as well uh I have as a user of Street Smart Edge since prior to day one everybody look I consider myself very much like all of you okay uh I am a Trader uh By Nature yeah do I spend my time educating yes do I spend my the rest of my time trading absolutely um the takeaway that I want to leave you with is this will improve for you uh chances ar
e very commonly the first time you saw any of these applications you felt similarly uh I can definitely suggest further yeah there may be applications that you feel better using right off the Jump that those applications may not be at Schwab do we want to lose clients for this process absolutely not that's not what we're about that's why we're providing what we are in the way of Education okay now if you feel quite simply that you don't want to devote the time to educate yourself that's okay too
okay but I would be remiss if I did not point out that a Trader is likely considering this a business themselves and Traders who consider it a business recognize that there is an amount of time that needs to be devoted to any business you're doing now if you're just out there trading willy-nilly I I wish you well I hope things are going okay for you okay but I think you have to come to the realization that there is an opportunity for you to spend the time to get acquainted with what is widely c
onsidered a best inclass trading application okay I understand that doesn't make it fun necessarily I didn't enjoy it initially but I'll tell you what I have had a lot of fun getting acquainted with this tool I think the more time you spend with it the better it becomes all right I don't know if I can say it any better than that Mike um as a user of this tool someone that transitioned from Edge to thinker swim deskt utilizing think or Swim desktop every single day at this point 6 months down the
road I'm absolutely feeling like I have everything that I need at my fingertips absolutely I think it's very well said Kevin and then with that just lastly that's folks where that thinker swim web can be very helpful to just as a little bit of a bridge or transition to get going into this but all the classes we do teach you know we do cover thicker swim and that will help you too learn I know Kevin you cover a lot of awesome classes during the week the we got as some other coaches that do as we
ll encourage you to take a look at it stuff other things that will really help you as well as you get educated on the side you can learn about the other um the other uh well thinker swim as well absolutely right and and again look a lot of us we are utilizing this platform on a day-to-day basis for all the classes we host okay that's a good thing for you because that means any class you attend you have a chance to pick up some tidbits and tricks along the way the more time we devote to anything
the better off we become but if you thought that trading was simply a process that I was going to learn everything and then I'll never have to learn again and I'm just going to be trading for the rest of my life without ever having to learn again I don't know if that is really the right answer I I've always thought that trading is a process of learning perpetually it never ends so I'm hopeful that that's the takeaway we are all here to do let's all be better let's get better at using the tool th
