He joined the Indian Navy after completing 10th standard. He was also a member of the Indian Navy team that traveled to Britain in 1961 to launch India's first warship, INS Vikrant. Jayan got his first break in the movie Panchami, which was released in 1976. In it, he got the negative role of a forest ranger. He is also considered the first action hero of Malayalam cinema.
