today the Supreme Court rejected a group of Fairfax County parents who were challenging the new admissions policy at Alexandria school they say the policy at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology discriminates on the basis of race foxes Katy Barlo is live tonight with the new details Katie in 2020 the Fairfax County School Board revised the admissions policy here at Thomas Jefferson High School after facing criticism that the student population was nearly 34 Asian American the
new policy focused on Equitable access drawing from every Fairfax County Middle School it also reduced the number of Asian-American students a group of parents and students sued for discrimination but because the Supreme Court declined to take up that challenge today the admissions policy now stands FCPS says that the admissions policy gives more students a fair shot and doesn't reveal an applicant's race to admissions officers it's race neutral now TJ admits students from every Fairfax County M
iddle School instead of just a handful that had previously resulted in classes that lacked socio economic and Geographic diversity under the new policy Asian-American students represented over 60% of the admissions offers but some parents are disappointed my husband's family is from India and we've we've never thought of my children's background um being South Asian as being somehow disadvantageous and for the first time in Fairfax County we feel that's the case because they explicitly changed t
hese admissions policies because they had too many Asians Justice Samuel Alo joined by Justice Clarence Thomas sharply criticized the Court's decision not to take up the case he wrote that what the federal appeals court reasoned in upholding the admissions policy quote is that intentional racial discrimination is Con institutional so long as it is not too severe some alumni of the school are concerned about the effect of today's decision on current students I've heard Rumblings of students calli
ng each other well you're the equity um not the hire but you know the equity student and so now you're setting a set of of people aside which you know again now now we're it's it's Prejudice right I mean that's not what we want we wanted people to all know that they belong there FCPS cheered the Court's decision today and emphasized that all students who are admitted are qualified and have earned their place at this prestigious School guys

@Oldman5261

Why on earth is it so difficult to just focus on merit. Anything else is discrimination. Discrimination is wrong.

@eatwhatukiii2532

It should be whomever has the best grades and motivation, regardless of race, gender, religion, etc.

@kjones_5211

This is hilarious! First, they wanted to abolish affirmative action and now they want it back because they thought they were hurting black kids. 😂😂😂 That’s what they get!!!

@missychan63

Mom @1:20- unless I'm missing something, all this does is give everyone a fair chance. The admissions people no longer know ethnicity of the applicants, how is this a bad thing? The best kids, the kids that deserve to be there, are getting in BECAUSE they have the grades, not because of the color of their skin. * I'm extremely tired tonight so if I'm way off base please feel free to educate me. 😊

@eddiemunster8634

Some people are just not competitive, And no policy will ever change that

@K162KingPin

Is this a private school? If so then, so what, they can admit anyone for any reason. Are they government funded in any way by our tax money? Then race should have nothing to do with admissions. Only grades. There shouldn't even be an interview process because then they can just say a student didn't seem like a good fit when they don't want that race in the school. If they want to get tax money then it should be based on grades. You can't even tell them 10% of this race, 20% of that one, because that still ends up discriminating against a higher scoring student who is the wrong race to fill some ridiculous race quota. Every single seat in a school changes a life. Lets be sure we are not destroying the lives of our best citizens, whatever race they are.

@thatsmeomfgikr6220

This was a terrible report. While the admissions process no longer took into account race, it added factors such as the income of the parents and the neighborhood they live in. Factors which have no place in merit based admissions.

@BradleyHoff-ck5kw

This is ridiculous. What is happening to us?

@mypassion2563

What’s so difficult to just focus on merit based. This is insane.

@nobodyspecial9097

Where are you from? Doesn’t matter. Who you identify as? We couldn’t care less. What are your test scores? - Any real place of education

@mikemorgan8588

Be capable to teach your children and have the savvy to let them know about rejecting evil aspects.

@matthewnorman2951

Conclusion: A job title that includes "qualified" just had the bar lowered yet again.

@chrislyle2425

Don’t wanna make anyone feel left out because they’re not smart enough

@Reach41

I wonder if there are any sports teams that hire players primarily based on the socio/economic status of their parents?

@HouseboundPerspectives

hilarious that they want affirmative action put back in place

@cadetpatricia3921

Will they know what school the student is coming from? I wonder if an issue with making assumption of socioeconomic class and race. Will there be scholarships available to those students who need it?

@angiee5446

Fairfax county has great schools any student with great grades should be able to attend no matter their race,

@jimpalmer1969

Please don't forget this is a pubic high school. I went to this school in 1968 and 69. I lived on the street behind the school and walked to school every day. My family moved back to Washington State in 1969 and graduated from Kent-Meriden in 1971. What the heck is going on? The people in the knighthood pay the taxes for this school and should have access. I remember TJ as a good school and it helped me in my career. But really? The public school system needs to be focused on the needs of the community and if parents want their kids to compete then they should be looking at private schools. This is a good court decision and I'm very glad it stands.

@christopher3287

I love how the guy at the end talks about people being labeled as the 'equity student', in this case the diversity hire is anyone but an Asian student lol.

@asanablue

There is a Thomas Jefferson High School "TJ" also in Frederick County?
