So this is who Tamil guys are.. Yes absolutely.. I vouch for Tamil guys. Oh yeah, listen to her. I vouch for them. From so many people I
know.. Tamil guys are the best. What I like about American houses
is having a bigger kitchen like this. You're coming here on a
train? Which gate are you in? Don't get on the train. Just get off the train and wait there because
there's somebody to pick you up there. Welcome Irfan,
welcome to Atlanta Thank you so much.. It's so good to see you,
thank you for bei
ng here. Thank you Sumetha. You're so welcome,
you're so welcome. Sumetha is just awesome Yeah definitely. She was my daughter's wedding planner and she's
the one who handles all my special events. Nice, that's good to know. We just missed you at the entrance..
-It's okay. I think the gates were...
-We're so sorry about that. Don't worry about all that I didn't
even expect you to come here. I thought I'll just come
and go to my room.. So hey, hello Irfan's view,
we're in Atlanta, US now. and now
I'm going to show
you a house and it's a house tour. Who's house is this? It's the
house of an entrepreneur called Sidd. And he's from Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
So he's from our State and he's come to US and he has created this
$300 million company from scratch. He build this and he's running this. $300 million is nearly
2000 crores in Indian money. So he created this massive company
small and he has grown it so much. So we're not just looking at
his house but also his office and we'll also talk to h
im and
understand how he built this company. So it will be useful for everyone. So let's go meet Sidd Ahmed
now and it's really cold outside guys. Irfan, welcome..
-Thank you. You're so cold. It's very cold and I have to tell you
about Sidd, he's such an energetic man. His energy is like.. It
just smacks everyone. No matter what mood we're in he makes his
surrounding positive by the way he talks. Sidd, how are you?
-I'm superb. You're energy is really contagious. Gosh no! No one can
match your e
nergy. I'm not kidding and I don't say this about
everyone.. Because you're energy is too much. Like literally. and he's always with that positive thought. So come on please..
because it's very cold outside. Yes Sidd, I'm happy to be here. Thanks
for inviting us to your beautiful home. So come on! Absolutely I'd love to.. and
first of all I want to welcome you home and I want to show
you around my house as well. Thank you so much for the
opportunity for being with you. Thank you so much and we'r
e
going to ask a lot of question with bro.. But then before that let me
show you around the house. Correct.. Come on.. So this here is my study area. This is where I generally have
all my books and in the mornings.. If I have any calls from my
office this is where I attend it from.. So this is the first area that we see.. I wanted to ask you this question
first.. You're at a certain level now and did you ever think you'll
be at this position when you started? I definitely didn't think that. I th
ought I'll be at a certain level but I
never thought that I'll grow to this level. Okay you studied in Trichy and what's
the life difference between then and now? I think life is the same. But it's just the joy and happiness of doing
certain things that you really love to do. That is what's the..
-That's deep. Nice, nice..
-That's the real joy. I think when you're run a company you're
helping the youth everyday and you're helping them set their careers,
giving them a career path, that's the joy.
Actually guys I should have
sat down before talking about this but these are the things
that really impressed me. So he's starting this company
and he's got this office and all here. But people usually start it in Chennai if it's in
Tamil Nadu, there's a lot of IT companies there. But he's like no, I'm from Trichy and I wanna start
it in my own place and he's got his office in Trichy. and there are 700 people working there, right?
-750 people in Trichy. Wow! That's like.. Really, really cool.
-
Thank you This here is our dining area. So the concept behind this was the
thing that I like.. As you said energy and vibrant, I really like white and that's
why my entire house would be white. So being sparkles trying to be clean
and white.. So that gives a lot of energy Yes, it does.
-So we designed it that way. Yes it does and it's a beautiful
dinner place and it looks fabulous. Absolutely come let's
take a look at this.. So did you actually build this
place yourself or you altered it? This h
ouse was built actually and they started
building house in this area back in 2010 So in that time we
chose this house. and there's a funny story about it.
There was this water body in the back and I bought the house thinking it would be nice
to have something like a pond in the back But then it turned out to be a detention pond
which is what we call sewage pond back home. So it turned out
like that but it's nice. This here is a rest room.
-It's like a powder room. Yeah this is a powder room. Thi
s is the powder room and again you'll see white..
-Yeah it's white everywhere, I saw that He's there..
-He's playing? He's playing.. Oh yeah, he's there. Hi..
-Hello.. Actually he's Sidd's son, his name is..
-Zayed. Hi Zayed
-What's up? So his name is Zayed and
he's in his gaming time now. So he's playing and he's actually a..
-Football player. Hey, what are you?
-Football player. Football player, what position do you play?
-Offensive line Which school do you play for?
-(inaudible) Awesome.. You
wanna say hi? Hi Thank you. Actually Zayed is a little
shy and I already met him. So he's inside and he plays
football.. That's the football here, it's different from our football
which is what they call soccer here But here they'll catch it with
their hands here and call it football. American football. They'll run like this dodging
through and it's really hard. So if you and I are going
to play then it goes like.. We'll be ready and go... Exactly that.. That's what he does.. That's
the energy
that I was talking about. Come let's go see the living room. and when we're entering the
living room, Sidd's wife's here. Hi, how are you?
-I'm good, how are you? I'm good, thank you. This is my wife Sabeera and we
had the pleasure of hosting Irfan. Absolutely and thank you
so much for coming over.. Thank you so much and what
can I say.. I can show houses like this to my viewers in
America and I appreciate this. So you have a home now in America.
-Thank you so much. So guys from what she said
we
've also got a house in Atlanta. So yeah this is the living room This is where we spend
majority of our time. and that's why it's called living room.
-That's right, yeah. Could you please explain
us about the fire place and.. Yeah sure, generally what
happens is it gets a little colder here around the February time frame
and that's why we've got a fireplace. Just to keep it a little warm. All of that and most of the family
oriented stuff and everything that we watch is going to be out here, so
t
his is where spend most of our time. But all of this artistic decoration
is completely done by my wife. Nothing creative about me. Nothing creative about
me and this is also like a game room, so we play
carrom or cards and all of that... Sometimes we just eat
food here, so like a big thali. Really?
-Yeah During Eid we just sit down and eat our biryani here.
-That's fun Guys they say during Eid time they'll
sit down here and have their biryani. Wouldn't that be fun?
-It would be superb. It's alwa
ys a pleasure
to sit on the floor and eat. Oh yeah.. Definitely. Don't wonder why he's only speaking in
English because he's not actually a Tamilian. and that's why she's
speaking in Tamil Like what's happening.. A little bit (In Tamil) Yeah but she understands and she's from Mumbai right?
-Yeah Yeah so she doesn't know
Tamil but she understands. But then I met her in Chennai. Yeah they met in Chennai.
He was born in Trichy and she was born in Mumbai
but they met in Chennai. So all credits to Ch
ennai. Correct!! What I like about American houses
is having a bigger kitchen like this. So this is a key area in that. because this is the right place
to cook and serve the food. So generally if you don't have a dining or if
you don't want to sit at the dining place then.. So breakfast.
-It's mainly for breakfast. and that's a breakfast nook. Oh this one here?
-So again if you're having early morning breakfast.. That was the favourite place
for my daughter when she used to go to school she
used
to have her coffee there. This is actually good. and guys look there's a chair like this here and as it's
a glass chair it's a little scary for me to sit in this. But yeah and it's also tall.. You can definitely sit on it.
-No I can but still I'm scared. Consider that I'm scared of it's height. So just imagine sitting here in
the morning having your breakfast. So all this here.. When I
bought the place it was all brown. So only after that we changed it to white..
-So that it looks bright It's a
ctually.. I really
like it that it's bright. But it's hard to maintain that brightness right?
-Yeah you're right. So you need to keep cleaning..
Keep on cleaning yeah. She says you're right..
I've got to keep on cleaning. That comes in my part. No Sidd also actually helps a lot. Is that so? Okay.. Sidd's saved. When people ask me he's an entrepreneur and
he's always traveling, so does he get time to spend with you guys and I'm like he
makes it a point that he is there for us. He's really the sou
l of the family. So this is who Tamil guys are.. Yes absolutely.. I vouch for Tamil guys. Oh yeah, listen to her. I vouch for them. From so many people I
know.. Tamil guys are the best. Fantastic bro..
-I definitely vouch for South Indian guys. See that? This man has
brought more pride to Tamil guys because he was a good guy.. Like they say
"If you've seen one, you've seen them all" So the one she saw has been good. So even we got credit for that. Thank you Sidd.
-You're welcome. Come let's sit
down and talk..
-Yeah Actually I wanted to ask
you this because when you started it you didn't know
you were gonna do this. But when you started you would
have had a forecast and what's that? The starting forecast was
what I was thinking is.. This is something I've always
had, it's that childhood dream.. I wanted a build a huge office and I wanted
to see 1000s of people working there. I had a dream like
that since I was a child. and the beauty of that is that
I had this dream where I walk up the
se stairs with a suitcase
in my hand wearing a suit Buying a suitcase was a big dream for me. So that was the original
thought as a child. When I started the business I thought we have
to set-up a company of at least 100 people. The company that I worked before this.. I've never worked for a big
name company before this. I've never worked for
any large business at all. All were these smaller business. and in those small business my
first company was worth $7 million I worked in Pittsburgh and th
en I went to Detroit. In Detroit it was a $2 million company. and I had this role like
Vice President of Sales. and I was able to grow
that company to $22 million. and that's when I thought.. I was very
instrumental there and I had a good position. and I was able to grow it to $22 million
and then I was thinking how is that we can.. and in that time I was saying this to all the people and
my bosses this.. They were all lifestyle entrepreneurs of these small companies trying to build a empire
onl
y for themselves and not about the entire team. So that's when I was telling them.. and it
was the time when off-shoring trend started.. I used to tell them about Trichy but
no one understood the idea of that. In the sense because Trichy has over 140
colleges and there's so much of talent pool I said let's do something in
Trichy but no one listened to me. So that was the corner stone of
whole idea behind the business. How can you really utilize the talent pool
of Trichy and can we build a global
business? So that is the corner
stone of our vision. This is our 15th year of business
and in these 15 years we've been able to do phenomenally
well for Trichy's population. In Trichy alone we've
created more than 6000 jobs. Currently there are over 750
people working in 4 different facilities. Actually we're the largest IT or IT enable services..
-VDart We're not just a IT enable services company we have
opportunities in Sales, Marketing, Finance, ESG, Culture.. Almost what a big name MNC comp
any has.. In software development, QA testing.. We've
got it in almost all the different areas. So you've got processes.
-Yeah BPO process.. So we have jobs in almost all the areas. and we're able to give that
comfort level for our people. Like when you join a small company
you'll just have to do a particular job and if you quit that you won't find
another position in that company... So we're able to create that.. We've got digital
marketing, content creators, video creators. Blog writers, we've
got everything. All those
opportunities are available within the company. So guys as we speak
we're now going out. So we're going to the deck..
-Actually I love this place. and that's why I wanted
to show this to you guys. Yep this is the deck, look at this place.
You can oversee the lawn from here. Lawn.. What's it called? Backyard. So we have a fireplace out
there so you can keep warm. It would be nice and it's really
beautiful when you turn on these lights. It's actually very cold out here t
oday and if
it wasn't so cold you can have so much fun here. What all have you
done with this place? In this place? Most importantly we
had our daughter's marriage here.. Pre engagement events all
happened in this area here. and then outside when people come here in general.
-To host parties and all that.. Parties happen upstairs and downstairs,
so people can really have some fun. Nice You would have seen these fridge magnets on
all the American houses that you've went to. and let me explain to
you about
the fridge magnets at my house. So generally you'll see
all the pictures of our kids. So you'll see kids growing up through the ages and
all the places that we've visited over the years. So guys Sidd's a guy who does a
lot of workout.. You can see him.. You're 40... You're 50?
-Yes 51 He's 51, I never thought that when I met
him and when I asked him how he's so fit.. Yeah he's like fit and fab. Where do you do it? Where? Oh come on let
me show you where I do it. I want to show you guys
..
-My workout stretches actually start here in the morning. Stretch station is.. Let me
just show you a small stretch Usually we'll stretch the knee
before we run and then it is this.. My wife always yells at me saying
don't do your stretches where we eat. See he's doing it again. So that's what she'd say but come.. and I don't like it. This is my favourite place to workout. This is my basement
where we have our GYM Even my son.. because he
plays football, he works out here. So this is the work
out frame. because we were doing a bit of heavy
weight training as he's playing football.. So we got this frame. It was a different setup before this
but we have all the equipments here. For boxing and kick
boxing we've got this as well. So Irfan and I are
going to box now. Yeah.. I didn't say anything it was his words Yeah boxing.. Boxing over Imagine if boxing was
like this.. With gloves on.. Done. This is just a guest room out here. So we'll have any of our guest visiting. Irfan if you're com
ing here next time
then you'll have to stay with us for sure. This is our home theatre. Theatre at our home,
so it's called home theatre So we've watched many Tamil
movies and English movies here. But it's mostly for the kids..
they'll really, really enjoy it. It's still really fun for us to go to the cinemas
and watch it with other audience in the theatre. What was the last film that you saw?
-Black panther. Black Panther okay and in Tamil? Ponniyin Selvan, it was an awesome film
-It was awesom
e right? Come on..
-Please.. You first please.. Come on, come on (In Tamil) We're going to look at the rooms now. This is the guest room. Oh it's the guest room, okay. Babies and Sidd's favourite books..
-These are her babies and those are my babies Okay.. Nice. During Pandemic.. We made the
most important decision from this chair. This is how it happens in
our world and in our business. So we're like 4 companies all together. It's like a VDart group. We have close to
4,000 people globally. Rig
ht around 2nd or 3rd week,
me, my CFO and CHRO and I'm having this call from here
around 10'o clock in the night. and I vividly remember this
because I say this story many times. We're having this call about what to
do because there is no more business. All the business is gone. So that time we're having this call about whether
to lay off them or to continue all these people. In the sense what do we do. That time we made
this call that.. In a city like Trichy what if they are the
bread winner of
the family? It's that person alone
because our talent pool is from farmers and they're kids
of first generation workers. So we were thinking through
this question and we said what if that person is the bread winner
of the family? What do we do? If we lay them off, how are they going to
earn money and how are they going to survive? During the entire pandemic we
did not let go of even a single person. Janitor, car driver, cook, chef..
We did not let go of anyone. As a result of that we were able
to
create what is called as a brand love. So people really love this brand and that's
what you'd find out when go to Trichy. I think my wife also played a very
important role in this journey as well. You would have seen a lot of trophies in my office.
-Yeah But this trophy alone will be
here in my personal workspace. That's because my mother is.. After we started VDart in 2017 we have this
big event called R&R (Rewards and Recognition) So we'll call all our employees from Trichy
and we'll bring
all our customers from US It's a 3 day event. and in that event we'll ask
the parents to come to the function and their parents
have to give them that award So we call that creating memorable
experience or micro experience. because we may have received
awards from many people but we sometimes don't
remember whom we got it from. If a son or a daughter gets his or her award from
their parents then no one can create that experience. So that is what we do year on year
and this is the 12th year we di
d this. In that time my
mother surprised me. In 2017 she gave me this
award called VDart Champion. So this is the trophy what my
daughter built from a newspaper cutting. I got the Small Business Person of the Year Award in Atlanta
Business Chronicle and she said, "Dad I love you so much" and this is one of the publications
that the newspaper wrote that we see that this is going to be
a half a billion dollar company. When they published this we
were a $150 million worth roughly. and now we've dou
bled our
revenues and we're almost there. Amazing house Sidd. Thank you.
-Thank you for showing us. I usually do house videos in our channel. When I do it back home people actually like
to see how these different houses look. I thought I should show a reference for
them to see how does houses look in America. I've already done a house
video and when they see this it will be a reference, so they'll know
this is how it would be there. So it would be interesting for them
to watch, it's like a cross
culture thing. Very true, very true. So people from our
state when they're here.. So yeah I'm so happy
that we did this today. We'll talk more about this stuff because I believe
this would be useful for the people watching this. Correct. Many youngsters watch my channel. Everyone wants to do
something and grow bigger. They've always had that mindset. How should they start their journey?
Should they dream big and aim for the skies or just focus on today
and do what's necessary for that? What was
your view when you started? Firstly you asked me a superb question.. Going back to the story.. Generally what I'm
so passionate about is the student community. That's because when you look at American economy,
small business is the heart of American economy. So small business is
what's helping the economy. So what's small business?
It's all about entrepreneurship But when you look at India kids or students in school
or colleges don't get a lot of entrepreneurial education and that's why we don'
t find
a lot of entrepreneurs in India. and that's been changing now. and for me when I was a kid my grandmother
used to make kites and sell those. She used to sell kites and
that's how she would earn. That's what my grandmother used to do. and my parents were
really struggling then. They used to make these electuaries for cows
and they used to put it in these cans at home and put a sticker on it that says KSM and
they used to bring it to stores and sell them. I sometimes think is it
probably be
cause I saw that... Probably that was inside you.. That entrepreneurship..
-That we want to do something on our own. So I think maybe it's because of that.. But what all my friends used to say when I was in
college is that I should be in a Sales environment So that's what happened eventually
because I studied computer science. and after I finished my studies
they said.. because I didn't even know 1 line of code, I finished
that 4 year degree in 7 years. In that time I got my first job as a
marke
ting executive in Brilliance So we have to go to these
colleges and sell computer education. Computer education
was very less in early 90s We need to convince people and college
students to take up computer education and then we had to go to many student's
houses and convince their parents about it. back then my uncle working in
Gulf said you're doing a great job for other companies, I'll invest for you,
you start your own company he said. and in that time I don't know if I knew
or it was just i
ntuitive but I said no. I said I don't want to do it now and I said
I wanted to learn more about this in detail. So maybe I got this because
I saw my parents do it. Or maybe because many of them..
-It's so deep. Even I can relate to this because my
dad was also doing a business like that. Is it probably because of that?
To do something on our own.. Meaning I think we see and do
things without knowing ourselves. Very true. Like what we're surrounded by.. So
we become what we're surrounded by. bec
ause the drive to come all the
way here from the scratch, I wanted to know how you got it and that's
why I repeatedly kept asking you this. I am so inspired by your story Irfan.. Your
story is a classic entrepreneurial story You have more people working
from Trichy in your company. So I've always had this wish.. Anyone working
in an IT company would want to go to US Yeah, yeah.. I myself was thinking I can go to
US only if I'm in IT but because I was weak in Maths and Science I
just studied B.Co
m and forgot about it. So do people from your company
come here or is there something like that? because if it's like that I can recruit
people who wish to come here. If you're in Trichy then go there.. Superb question.. Of course this is the 13th year
after we started this in Trichy. When we started this first in Trichy in Raja
Colony and we call that "The house of success" because that's the
house built by my dad. When we started the company we
didn't have enough money to buy a office. So it w
as terrace.. Usually people say it's a
garage start up but this was a terrace start up. So it was a terrace start
up with asbestos sheet and back then spending 1.5
lakhs on that was really hard. because that's when
we started the company. So we had that installed
and we recruited 5 people. and those 5 people are still working
in the company after 13 years... and now many people have
completed more than 10 years. But most of these who joined our
company were freshers, they were right out of colle
ge and we started something
like this in Trichy for the first time. In IT outsourcing enable services. and these people now manage multi
million dollar portfolios for the business. So they often travel to
US and meet the clients. Just like how you travel they'll
also travel and be here for 6 months or so depending on the customer
meetings, attending conferences.. So what we must do for that in general
there are lots of Visa restrictions in US and that's when we thought about how we could give
g
rowth opportunity to all the people in Trichy. and how can we do that? US isn't the only destination
and we didn't think about that specifically.. But then our operations are in Canada,
Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, UK, Belgium.. Australia, Japan, India.. and
India is our delivery center. Which is what delivers
to all these countries. and Trichy is the only place. In generally when people open
companies they do it in Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata because they
think that's where the talent pool is. B
ut what we thought was when there's a talent
pool in Trichy we must just invest in Trichy. and in these 3 years we did not
open delivery centers anywhere else. because we didn't find senior
level software developers in Trichy we opened small offices
in Chennai and Bangalore. and what's important about this is that we recently
launched this regional headquarters in Malaysia. So that's to serve the Asian region like
Thailand, Singapore and all of those regions. So when we opened this office
what w
e did was who were in senior positions we gave them
the opportunity to go to Malaysia. We said okay we can
work in a multi geography. So VDart offers
opportunities to work overseas. So it's been 13 years since you started
VDart and you've got 750 employees so far.. So I saw this article saying you're working
towards having more than 2000 employees. So you're still recruiting if I'm not wrong..
-Yes, yes So in this recruitment process what
do you look for as an employer? Oh that's superb. because
this would be useful to many people.
There'll be people watching this who are going on a interview for the first time, so if they know what
an employer looks for then they'll get the formula. So it will make it easier for them.. Irfan there's not a lot of
difference in this and some of the points that you
mentioned are very important. First thing is.. We call it 3Hs,
we say this in our HR team. Degree isn't important.. You don't
need a degree at all to work with VDart. You can get a role in pro
gramming,
marketing, HR or any other department. Degree is not important. I said 3 Hs the first one is Hunger. The real Hunger.. I'm
ready to do whatever it takes. and the 2nd thing is hustle. I'll find the answer for whatever
problem that your throw at me. Hunger, Humble and Hustle. So the 3rd one is Humble. So these young kids.. It's
how people are at this age. When we're working in an office and do an
achievement we'll assume we know everything. But to be with that humility and the most impor
tant
thing is communication skill. Communication and English speaking
skill is very important in today's trend.. and India is a services Industry right? and service
industry primarily serve overseas customers. and for that if you have the right communication
skill you can absolutely win at this job. How helpful was book reading for you to do
this and when did this book reading start? I started book reading when I started
my business maybe 4-5 years before that. So probably about 20
years so far
in book reading. So that's why I say this now.. Start
that habit when you're in College. because you're depth of knowledge and different
types of views.. You keep getting that through books. Hi guys..
-Hello!! We're still making this video and she
went out and brought what all groceries. We've been talking for so long. But it's very interesting that's why.. I won't
be able to stop when I'm talking like this. because we're gaining knowledge. Absolutely. This employees welfare..
We were talking ab
out that. So the things that you
do for your employees. Specially when we started
this company back in 2010 in Trichy women didn't used
to go out at night to work. Ladies didn't used to work, so we went to the home
of our first employee to convince her parents. Saying send your daughter to the
office and we'll take good care of her. From then today 52% of
our workforce is women. Wow! In our company what we have
is to bring that gender equality.. There are 52% women but there
aren't many in leade
rship positions. So we started this initiative
called the Global women leadership. So we did that intentionally to
get our women to leadership roles. Early what 2016 -2017.. How
did we take care of people right? Whoever completed 5 years
in our company got cars. We gave them Honda City cars
and we did this back in 2016-17 So anyone who had completed 5
years.. We awarded them like that. You gave them cars..
-Yeah we gave them Honda City cars. We nearly gave 20 cars
just to recognize people. You t
ry and want to improve each
and everything in the nook and corner. I believe you have that thought
because you're reading more books and you have more knowledge about
this, you're hustling and you're fit... I think collection of these things that can
create something like this, else you can't. and what's the future for VDart? We've crossed the 15 year journey and in these 15 years
we've grown to about $300 with 4 different companies. We're in services, product,
talent management.. What we're loo
king at for the next 15
years for these companies are CEOs.. So there's enough growth opportunities
for people within the organization. CEOs, CHROs, CFOs.. We're looking at growing this
company to the next level meaning in 2025 we're looking at the
half a billion dollar journey. and in 2030 we're looking
