Telling Scientific Stories with Maike Fritz | Science Film Festival 2021 | Bangladesh | GUB

An exciting Facebook-LIVE workshop on 19th December by Scientist Maike Fritz in the Science Film Festival 2021! In an hour long science workshop, Maike will demonstrate how to build an environment friendly castle with peas, draw with flowers and make air visible.  OUR SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS Building with peas Become an architect: Building blocks are for yesterday, today you build with peas! Castles, dream structures, geometric figures... the pea method gives you the greatest freedom in construction. You are not bound to certain angles and with a little skill you have up to eight connection possibilities per pea. The construction set is also absolutely environmentally friendly. Drawing with Flowers Flowers not only have fascinating shapes, but also beautiful colors in all variations. Couldn't this variety of colors be used for painting? We'll show you how you can easily elicit the colors from plants and create creative and colorful works of art with it. Air is not nothing The air around us is invisible, we cannot smell it or taste it, and yet it is there. We will explore with you how you can make air visible with just a few tools and how you can construct a simple diving bell. You will also watch glasses do somersaults and dance, see bubbles rise and build a speedboat. um [Music] um all right then um thank you all for being here it is very exciting at the same time it is almost we have almost reached to the end of our science film festival but we are trying to conclude it with a very exciting workshop we have a workshop with um maike and we will get to know her very very soon we have today not one but two and half scientists and who they are we will get to know it is right for for right now we would like to just thank all our viewers and our partners this live
will be available um in in the pages of our partners who are aspired to innovate hy brac education program we have jago foundation teach for bangladesh nets bangladesh and the past schools that we have uh for maple leaf international school oxford international school mastermind international school um thank you again to all our partners who have we are willing to um share all through and has been very wonderfully um with with us throughout the festival and um moving on we have group and um fro
m google we have bend who would be introducing uh goob and my k and this workshop is being brought to you by goethe institute bangladesh and with association with goog without further ado i would like to transfer and let ben speak over to you then thank you um i'm here from ub and i'm happy that we have a possibility here to talk here to many people interested in bangladesh that was a great opportunity i'm pro-check manager of the society for environmental education baden-wurttenberg but in wurd
enberg is a country in germany and we are having 25 kindergartens we are working with in [Music] environmental education and science in the region of heidelberg mannheim and weinheim so in this regions we are very present and we are making scientific lessons with teachers of kindergartens and elementary schools and in this field we are very engaged and we are until uh 2004 active in this region and um we are very happy now that we have a possibility also to go a little bit more because we have f
ounded in 2020 a possibility of free explorer channels in youtube and now we are very happy but together with a good institute in bangladesh gave us the opportunity to talk to you to make experience and um so i would say let's start um i will give a term to michael and she will show us the first experiment and after the experiment i will have a talk with priyanka and we will also introduce more our work and so i wish you great fun today and [Music] michael it's your turn like it i'm sorry you ha
ve to unmute so i hope now you can hear us is everything okay yes everything welcome from germany i'm sitting here with reika and kendall my name is michael and we born today to show you how exploring it exploring is really fun that it's really easy that you can do it every day that you don't need one special things that are really expensive just open your eyes just be curious and you will become a really good explorer so let's start today i have a glass with me and this glass is really full but
the question is pull off what do you have any idea i think nothing nothing so i'm just joking yes okay let's ask kendall what do you think i think somewhat inside so let's try it out now if i throw it over your head will you become red attention and no nothing you are happy just feel inside is it red or dry right it's completely dry but it's full what is it inside the glass fortunately we have some other bowls here what is inside this bowl whatever water really water so this water will help us
to explore what is inside the glass now attention i will put my glass straight down into the bowl with water and now yes have you seen something yes there are mothers and can you hear it too yes yeah we have bubbles but what kind of bubbles what is it yeah do you think it's air yes do you think we have air here inside the room yes yes of course we have a room plenty of air we can grease you too we don't have to open the window then only fresh air will come inside the house is full of air and eve
n my glasses full of air so try it out to make the air irritable just take your bowls too take your glasses and your toe might try it out too so straight down the glass and make some bubbles is it bubbling just put it down straight and then a little bit to the side now yeah beautiful bubbles coming out i hope you can hear the bubbles too so you can make the air from the glass visible so let's try out something else do you think that this glass can make some spots yes like like a turnaround yes l
et's try it out just take your glass now it's full of air put some air inside and put it down but put your finger on the glass yeah let's count to three together and see what will happen one two three and it makes it turn around makes it flip let's try it again some air inside of course outside with the water put it down with your finger count to three one two three and make it again it's working huh yes now let's try out what will happen if you have some water inside the glass so press the puts
down put it to the ground and put your finger on it and let's count again one two three and nothing why what do you think um let's see again what is inside just pull it up i think water with the water inside isn't it isn't working you need air and then it's filling with water inside it isn't working now with a new experience now let's try out if our glasses are able to swim what do you think yes yes yes so firstly put some air inside the glass what out and let's see yes that's true yeah perfect
ly swimming you can even make it dance but now what do you think if you put water inside the glass it's remain true no no just try it out water inside just standing here and try to make it dance is it working but now you can find out the point when the glass is swimming with some water inside just put a little water inside and try out if you find the point where it starts to swim now my gosh it's still swimming and cheers i find it yes really good i have some more water inside try some more wate
r at home and try out to find the exact point when it's starting to swim so i think we can put water like this inside do you have it yeah just right you can do it the same at home but now we have another idea what you can try out i have here a drinking store assembled drinking straw you can pull it out and then you i will take my glass if you firstly watch put it into the water fill it with water and let it stand now i put my drinking straw under the glass and what do you think will do when i no
w blow into the drinking straw what will happen it's a flip it's making a flip but yes i think there are just a minute just doubles okay let's try it out now i will blow into the drinking spa i see bubbles it's like a flip and i'm taking a shower so you can try it out too let's give it strokes so firstly you put the glass inside some water inside let it stand now drinking straw under the glass and it will blow inside yes perfectly working good really now you can try out what happens if you lay d
own the glass and you blow somewhere inside or you let it stand and blow just explore what will happen so here you see the air is coming to me but i'm going in this direction so there's coming back or if it let it stand just right what will happen i think just above it try it out bubbles in the water is even coming out of the glass so you can try out a lot of things with these glasses and the straws but now we have another question for you just take everything out so now i have here a little boa
t it's just a tea light it's a bag from a tea light but it's also our boat and i have a captain for the boat and the captain is really curious and he always is trying to find the treasure now he had found a treasure in the white white sea if you really want to go down to the treasure he doesn't want to take up the treasure with him but you want to go down you have only a big problem that the captain is afraid of water so how can the captain go down to the treasure and see it without getting wet
i have idea do you have an idea yes yes this drone the glass and water okay and then i make bubbles and i think and the coin the coin with the face is flip oh it's flipping with the glass okay try it out perfectly flip but the treasure is on the ground so good idea but let's see what baker is telling us um i think when we put the glass on the bowl and then they just go with it on the ground okay what is inside your glass now air yeah okay it's really interesting and now the captain can get out o
f the glass see the treasure and come back again and he is wet or dry shower dry it dry it's completely dry so let's try out candle so again we'll take our glass get some air inside put it on the boat and go straight down with the boat and then the captain can go to the ground of the sea go around look at the treasure without getting wet so what we have here is a perfect diving bell earlier people really got down to the ground to the sea like this not from glass but from steel they really got do
wn and so they could explore the ground of the sea with such a simple driving belt so you can try it at home too to get down with your driving belt it's really easy isn't it so that was our first experiment with air and water and now we'll give back japan thank you michael this was a great experience and i'm happy that i can also introduce michael he is one of our um [Music] person of our team he is um geography and i am biologist so we have a team of um seven people which are working together i
n the kindergartens and um it's great possibility here in the region that is for free years so the kindergartens have to pay anything but they have this um scientific lessons and this is um due to in germany very open uh often from a foundation so um in this kind it's hans verna and josephine foundation who is supporting us so that's a great possibility to make a project and develop ideas here in civil society so ben i have a question for you if you would allow me since we have a number of viewe
rs perhaps they would like to know um that you mentioned that you uh work with kindergarten like children from the kindergarten which is essentially early childhood uh for them why is it necessary you think that to make signs that available or to make it interesting for for children who are at the early stage of their childhood um i think because it's the right time because in the early years the children are very open they have possibilities to be very engaged and happy to explore and so i thin
k this is a really right time to start um and also it's very common that if you make uh experiences in this young age you will with this day yes your mind will remember science has been fun and also in school if you hear something about science you will be more interested and more getting want to look at more information so i think this is the right time to start in science and um yes we make it and we see that the children in this age three until six in kindergartens are very very happy that so
mebody's coming the kindergarten will say oh my goodness um scientific is coming and i want to be also in this group so shortly said we have this system that every kindergarten of our 25 kindergartens has a special teacher he comes every two weeks in the kindergarten and um he has two groups of children we have seen that children group in five until eight children is perfect okay and part of our system is that um we um [Music] have also the kindergarten teacher with us so it is a possibility to
train with teacher because the group is there for a whole year so the teacher and the kindergarten kinders are learning one year interesting scientific informations that is fantastic i think mikey is ready with her second experiment we will hear more stories of how students and teachers are being trained and how we can also learn from them and these are very very interesting quite easy i mean things are we have things around so sure over to mikey i believe you're ready that's fine we're looking
forward michael okay so now we are becoming ivy packs or even build us so we have some building blocks here but that was yesterday now we want to build with two sticks and piers dry piers you can even put it away you don't need it we have only this yet field i'm sure you have dry pears at home too and two sticks you will find even in your kitchen but how to build within pee it's really hard try it out it's really small and you can't put in anything so do you have an idea what can we do to make i
t buildable yes i have yeah we can add a piece piece in the water and water yes and then on night believe it's a night over in the water yeah and then and then will see because we tried it out and we will show it to you now we have here our small really hard piece and if we give some water to it overnight just like this we just have to wait about 10-12 hours then it will look like this you see it has a different look now let's have a nearer look what happened it's much bigger become much bigger
and greener greener the colors changed and if you put your fingernail inside or a two stick try it out it's even weaker yes so we can really beat with it if you want you can even put some color to it can you here's this one so here we put some blue food color too into the water and you can change a little bit the color so that you can get different peak colors too so let's try out if you really can't build with it can you pass us the less bones now you can take some piece and some two sticks and
then you can try out really to build with it so i will pass it to you and come to you so all you have to do is get some p put the two stick inside and you will see that you don't even put one inside you can put up to eight or more two sticks and so you can start to build a 2d construction but you can also build up in the high and get some 3d constructions so you can build simply geometrical forms so you can even use it for your math lesson if you talk about quarters and triangles and stuff like
this or you can even try to use it in your chemistry lessons if you have chemistry in school you see it's really easy in the beginning maybe the piece will get broken if you put the two stick inside it will get into two pieces but go on you will get the clue really soon and then you can easily purchase it so if you use it for chemistry it's good to have two or three colors so you see i'm now in the second dimension and if you want you can even put some paper in between and make it really beauti
ful the best thing is that when the peers are getting dry again they get smaller again and then it will become really stable what you are building now it's quite stable but if it's getting dried it's stable more stable again and you can quickly really build up in the high and build cathedrals and good constructions and the best thing is that it's really environmentally friendly when you have finish and you want to throw it away you can even give it to the compass in your garden and it will becom
e us from it so you don't have plastic you don't have anything that disturbs the environment and if you want you can plant on the piece you don't use so you can grow up plants from it and you can have a look how it is growing up and you can get new piece from it so that you have even a working cycle that you get new piece from this ones so it's really great to have it at home and really good to try it out so have fun with it and we will give back to band again hello thank you michael this was a
great experience again and it's so beautiful what you can make with such easy things working with things of the household and not eating and this is also a possibility how we work but we show easy materials but good effects because we think it's not so important um that children in this age get too much knowledge about the background scientific informations but they see that uh experiment they have we get in touch with it so it's more with working with ears eyes and feeling and this is very inte
nsive for remembering scientific things so this is also for us very important but also we are in every kindergarten we are making a explorer table but um in every group um kindergarten have the material to work with to different fields like magnetisms or air or other things so um i think it's important that um the kindergarten has the material uh on the place and the children if they want to explore something they have it and can make it right um it was very interesting with the with the piece u
m one it is absolutely like it's a it's a good time for even for bangladesh because it is winter and it is super easy to get this piece um in our kitchen and we can immediately go ahead and do the experiment but what my she also mentioned how after the experiment you can use it as compost so something that is environmental friendly how important is it that you use materials that are environmental friendly um that's very important for us because we want to make a new garbage so it's important als
o for us to work with natural materials um for example we have also um a very interesting project because we want to connect also different fields in the kindergarten so we have also project science and art so in this time we have artists who come to the kindergartens and make also protect together with scientific thinkings for example working with colors so natural colors with um for example with plants and fruits and how they color how we change the colors if we put some citron acid and it and
so a lot of experimenting it's also for us important um only natural materials working with tone and everything so um this is a very important point in our work um yes great to get also virtually in touch with natural things absolutely we would like to know more about how you train the trainers uh but perhaps for now since they are ready we can get back to the experiments so we have a look micah this looks very colorful and a lot of plants so we're excited what about that yeah we have beautiful
colors here beautiful plants candy is building on because you wanted to get up the building and to get a tire and show you how it is working but we too are here with our flowers now in germany it's winter outside you don't find any plants outside or you don't find this flowers outside you had to buy it but i think the colors are beautiful the shapes are beautiful and i'm sure that nature in bangladesh is more rich than here in germany and you have beautiful flowers and colors too in your nature
and you just have to go into your garden and get some flowers and then you can do this experiment too so we found that the colors are extremely nice from these flowers and we wanted to paint with it but how to paint with the flower that's our question now firstly we need some paper for painting the skin but now he takes a slower and producing how can we paint with a flower i don't know it's happening nothing but if you take the flower and you press it to the paper have a look then you can get o
ut the color of it just try it out so you have a pink one yes beautiful too sometimes the color is not like the color you see in the flower you really have to try it out some flowers are really beautiful color and make nothing on the paper some are making quite the same color some are making a different color so you can really try it out you see i had a really reddish flower and it's more a purple and your flower too it's changed a little bit the color now let's try the others i have a yellow fl
ower too but it's really small so i can use something to help me you can use simply a stone and put it on and you will have some yellow on it okay it's brownish and the original was i think it was pink okay now i will take the stone again and just press it and stamp it then you can even try to form the flowers to get the form on the paper from the flower you can try it out you have a stone too no over there you can find it and if you want green color you can even take rest or you can even take t
he leaves of the flowers just press it a little bit on your paper and you will get a beautiful green so your garden is full of colors and if you don't have a garden just go out into the nature and get some plants and try if you can get the color out you can even try white flowers on white paper do you think it's working no just try it out sometimes you see something sometimes not i don't need a little bit it's visible you can even make a mix from the colors and you can even put the leaves on it
and then you can even make some out with it so leave some normal flowers make some colors on the paper have you tried out the roses they normally give really nice colors i will try another green yes yeah now it's coming out it's really nice and it's so easy and it's really really fun now we have another green here it's looking really dark but on the paper it's like the other so you can really make your experiences but what happened when you don't find flowers like we now in germany outside then
we have another trick for you so we can put the fresh flowers to the side and get our dried flowers i found it in our kitchen cupboard it's tea so maybe you have even this flour tea at home in your cupboard you can use different plants just try it out if your tea is working too but how is it working if i put it now here my paper nothing is happening what can we do um we can plant and the water add some water and um stand where maybe with a stone yeah with a stone and we have a pan with a brush c
an draw it as well good idea we have here a special instrument you have a murder and a pistol then you can perfectly make it smaller and then put some water on it we have a pipette here maybe you can take it and show it in the camera this is the pie pattern with the pipet we can add some water to our murder and then if i stand it here the color will come out from the flower now we can use the brush and just try to make it on the paper even with a pistol you can dry it out and you see yes we even
have created some color but maybe you don't have such a murder at home and we don't have a pipette but it's easy to make with your kitchen stuff so we have a normal glass bowl and we have a spoon and we have our stones so try out to get the color out of it just with this kind of things yes okay just some water with a spoon so you see you may use this instrument we have but you can do it also with your normal kitchen stuff so it's no problem if you don't have special instrument for exploring you
can do it with everyday things too at home now you can even get it out and put it red like this on the paper just try something out so you can really draw with this colors in winter time in summertime you can always find a possibility if you just try it out and look how beautiful this is with the fresh flowers with all these colors so i'm sure you will have fun too with it and we will give back to band that was really beautiful i was very impressed seeing it and it was also what we said before
um it is the moment that we can um work um art and science together and work with materials out of nature so this is a perfect thing for us if we can combine these things so i don't know how it's in bangladesh but in germany we have also um really gardens in the kindergarten so we have outer space with trees and plants and in this case for us is also important to give there some exploring materials so for example we give the kindergartens plants where they can explore with colors so special plan
ts where you can use roots and other things and explore with that so for us it's very important to make a system with all possibilities of outer space created the integrated training of the teachers indicated that we have enough material to work with so um we uh make a a very broad education for the kindergartens and also have some supplemental things okay like the courses and other things um we give them again right i mean as as you just mentioned uh just for your information and perhaps for um
a future invitation to bangladesh we as you know have a monsoon season and the soil is very very fertile and we we do have a huge range of colorful flowers and plants that grow not not just that we also have colors uh that can be produced from sea so um and and there are uh artists who are like master painters uh from uh from the country who have um actually used these natural colors in their canvases it is just uh as a matter of fact that we are finding these similarities and in a rather scien
tific way and how art and science are think they can combine and it's it's wonderful to see these experiments so as we were talking how um as we wanted to know that how you train the trainers uh to make it age appropriate for the children yes uh first time the teachers of kindergartens have a possibility with our teaching uh when we come to the kindergarten uh last two hours so one group one hour next week also one hour okay so there's a possibility for a kindergarten that one teacher is at one
group by the second teacher the second group and this teacher has a possibility to see to write the documentary what he sees and we have also all information about the experiment we got on a leaflet so after one year they are very very good inside and we hear often from our kindergarten teachers oh first four times could be a little bit and after one year with oh i'm very good and i i feel uh very very supported in this field and they give it also like normal um without our health so this is our
system that we support one year one or two teachers of the kindergarten and after having us as partners coming every to week a possibility to question us he is a good field now and he's very uh excited also and uh a lot of the teachers say oh science is fun that's that's our aim absolutely and how um how hard is it to be a scientist because when we think of scientists we think of you know very serious people and a lot of studies and like you know we there are children who kind of fear science a
nd try to steer away thinking it is a very hard thing but how was it how was it for you to become a scientist uh for me it was it was not so hard because i love to do work in the garden and perhaps like in bangladesh the germans love their gardens i love green green plants in the house in the garden everywhere queen so a lot of children have a field they can explore with green and colors and gardens and they have such finger that by saying oh it's interesting um so this kind um yes we have a gro
und for science and like i said in kindergarten um we can uh say oh great science we love it yes that's not any point of or science is something special right it's no fear it's uh really fun and because it's also in this age getting in contact with science and there is no pressure no notes it's only the sun and um astonishing oh what's happening here and also it's right so really encouraging the curiosity in uh that that you that that is very inherent in us isn't it yes yes and it's also very be
autiful for children can also prove and improve their languages they describe what they see so this science experience is also very good for developing the language and it's also very good for people in our case who don't speak the language at all because if you have people in kindergarten who come from different countries not speaking german so well at this moment in making experiments they have the possibility to show what they can what they have so we have also experienced for all these futur
es it's very great to work with science so it's a very very very good way yeah and like i think also we saw if we combine getting out of the field with the science this is art i think uh the future is in combining all this field and give the children more creative lgbt a great hundred percent i have a question which came from our viewers she's also one of her partners she said i would like to develop an activity book for teachers for preschoolers all activities um are at no cost and based on nat
ure what structure can they build for developing these that it would not cost them much essentially take the materials from nature she wants to make a book for for teachers for preschoolers that's great so um she really should write to you or get in contact so you can send us a contact because we had a great opportunity to work with a great uh connelson uh german macbook for schools and uh we uh showed them our work how we work in the kindergartens and they said to us oh the spirit will make a b
ook and so um we get in contact with cornelson and really um about our scientific program in kindergarten's us four books so we write four books about science and kindergarten so of course i can give her or send her one of the books and other side we have a lot of like i said leaflets um where we show materials uh scientific background so i could also give her a some pages that they could see how to make it great that question was from manjushri mitra so manjushri uh mitre if you are listening a
s beyond already um shared with open arms that he is willing to share the leaflets and the ideas perhaps after the um after the workshop we can get in touch and it would be wonderful so thank you very much for the question itself and we see this palace or a fort being made by peace isn't that wonderful what is going on in there i would say this is a really uh palace yes and i think this is also a beautiful uh experimental shows again um it's a kind of art it's a kind of architecture is a kind of
natural science so everything is also combined in this and um we learned some about physics about maths you can a lot of things make with that so it's really great i think with one experience you have a lot of feels that you can work on and but um i want wanted also to say uh about your last thing um that you talked about cooperation and um we really have a project uh uh with a foundation by the gutenberg at the moment where we uh want to connect our model kindergartens with our kindergartens i
n the world so if anybody knows a kindergarten bangladesh who wanted to get in contact with one of our kindergartens we can also have a corporation and we also could send materials we have um with also perhaps interesting boxes so every experiment has a box and with the teacher for kindergarten can take out the box it has all materials he needs for xp and then so we could also send some materials to bangladesh which could be also good for cooperation so if there's any interest also you can conne
ct with us absolutely so shout out to all the teachers all the educators and also the students if you're watching and if you want um give to cooperate with your school go ahead and talk to your teachers and we can get in touch um and you can have beautiful experiments um that you can carry out in your classrooms or at home uh with your family as well but it's so interesting to see the strength of peace i had no idea that these were so strong they are very very strong what about from our little s
cientists so uh how are they feeling good good and do you guys also try out experiments at home do you paint with flowers yes that's wonderful that's wonderful thank you they're always helping to make the videos you can look and um youtube there you will find a lot of ideas what you can do they both will show you and yeah but have a look at this construction in really a short time it's a beautiful building here and it's quite stable too and it's making fun i think he's unstoppable now but we wil
l show you the last experience here with us the last experiment so we will get this to the side right so even it's really really beautiful and show you how to build a simply rocket now the new year is coming or even if you have a birthday children's birthday it's really a great thing you can do only with a glider some simply teabag and a plate that is a standing fire that you will need so take you a plate thanks and take it simply teabag you see this teabag is built out of paper and inside some
herbs so we will have to open it and put the herbs out so we have some scissors here you can also try this out also just open this little throat here we don't need it you can even take decision for help or if it's too much work and you want to make quicker you can also just cut it here then you can open the tea bag and get the herbs out and after you can even make a nice teeth from it so then you can oh it doesn't matter then we will make a rocket together so then you can put the teabag on your
plate if you want you can even write a good wish on it or you can write your name on it or the name from the rocket then it's really a personalized record for you so are you ready yes yes that's really yeah that's broke maybe we can cut it down on both ends and then it's working too okay so just make this then you have a smaller record you just have to put the herbs on this plate so they couldn't burn if we take the fire on it it's really important that you don't do it alone children you have to
do it with your parents or another grown-up person because we really use fire here if you want to make this outside this rocket it must really be no wind because it's really easy to get blowed away so put your orchid on your plate and then first you will light up your rocket so do you want to do it oh yes okay can you pay attention so just align it here on the front from above [Music] try again now light it up and then you see it's really good burning and it's burning down and three two one and
it's getting up to the high wow wow that's really crazy it's really great all children love it and downs coming just a little bit of s so but why is it getting up do you have an idea uh will the fire the air is stacking one from the fire and warm air what is it doing up go up going up yeah warm air is easier than the air around here and you have really hot air inside this tea bag and if it's getting down and it's getting light enough to get up to the warm air it's getting up and when the air is
