The Lore Master

6 days ago

R2-D2 was gifted to Anakin by Padme following his knighthood of the Jedi Order. The two quickly became friends, with Skywalker viewing the droid not only as a reliable companion, but also as a constant reminder of his wife while separated from her during the Clone Wars. So, after R2 left to go get blue milk, who came to replace his role as the chosen one’s trusted copilot? Following his recovery from Mustafar, Darth Vader was allowed to obtain and modify nearly all starfighters used by the forme
r Republic to his liking. As a result, Vader came to acquire numerous Eta-2 Actis-class Interceptors stored for use within his primary star destroyers. Despite the Starfighter being one of his personal favorites as a Jedi, it quickly became apparent to the Sith Lord that the cybernetics and increased height given by his new armor, made the original cockpit both uncomfortable as well as difficult to see through due to his helmet’s lenses. Because of this, extensive modifications were undertaken t
o correct these issues, a practice once done by Skywalker to stimulate his creativity, now done to ease his suffering. Nonetheless, these modifications saw Vader’s Interceptors’ have slight variations from one another, all implemented in the desperate attempt of returning the natural feel the starfighter once had to him. Although Vader had several Interceptors to pick and choose from, he continued to use a single astromech throughout his early missions. Picked to replace R2-D2, R4-K5 was formerl
y owned by a deceased member of the Jedi Order, perhaps being chosen by Vader for already having flight experience with a Force-sensitive pilot. Just like the Interceptors it would fly in, R4 was given a new paint job, dawning black and silver plating, which were chosen to reflect Vader’s own inner darkness. While R4 accompanied Vader on nearly all of his missions during his early years, no bond was formed between the two, with the Sith Lord viewing the droid as just another piece of equipment,
often referring to it as “astromech” rather than its designation. This cold relationship likely would have continued even if R2-D2 remained at his side, as following Anakin’s fall to the dark side and return to Padme’s apartment prior to his departure for Mustafar, R2 briefly communicated to C-3PO about the drastic changes in Skywalker’s personality, confiding over how his master had distanced himself and completely stopped chatting with him besides giving orders. Darth Vader’s decision to use t
he same astromech likely was done to have it build up experience with his flying style as well as to alleviate the difficulties faced with the ships he flew, as R4’s modifications gave him pre-programmed control systems that could be integrated to other astromech-capable starfighters when necessary. These frustrations, along with wishing to stop using a starfighter which reminded him of his Jedi days, led Vader to personally request a new ship to be designed by one of the Empire’s best engineers
. Along with requests for a starfighter which better suited the Sith Lord’s armor, he also wanted one which was outfitted with advanced systems that did not require the assistance of an astromech. This ultimately led to the creation of the Tie Advanced Fighter, with it becoming Darth Vader’s primary starfighter upon completion. His old Interceptors were later given to various Imperial outposts. R4-K5’s fate is unknown, with the astromech likely being turned to scrap or reprogrammed for other pur
poses within the Empire after having no further use to Darth Vader.

The saddest thing is that R2, unlike C-3PO, never lost his memory, so he never forgot the horrors he experienced since Episode I. The worst thing is that in the "Legacy" comics R2 is still active, as a member of the Skywalker Family, which means he saw all the characters from the Original Trilogy die, including his beloved C-3PO 😢

@StuartLugsden

R2 being a reminder of Padme is something I never thought of before.

@TheNonameHousehold

Anakin: Artoo is more than just a droid, he's a friend 🫀 Vader: Astromech! ⚫️

@Halman9000

R2 truly loved Anakin and wanted to be with him no matter what. In fact, of all Anakin's grandchildren, R2 had the strongest bond with Anakin Solo, who also had a passion for technology and droids, sharing the kid with the astromech many adventures together. I can't even imagine what R2 felt when he lost both Anakin. "I am so sorry, master. I failed you. You trusted me. And I failed you" 😢

@AlwaysADekaranger

That part "after R2 Left to go to get Blue Milk" left me laughing my butt off that it made my day better today.

@Oskareli

Fun fact: In early drafts of A New Hope, R2-D2 spoke Basic, so we perfectly understood his cruel and merciless comments. He was basically a robot version of Joe Pesci.

@jtjames79

So I had this idea for a force sensitive character that gets a hold of an old Jedi Starfighter. With most of the systems broken, he has to operate it with almost entirely the force. He doesn't realize this initially. He just really really wanted it to work. So it does. Also, the Jedi Starfighter is haunted by a force ghost with a quest to find his old Droid. Shenanigans ensue.

@biggestnerdalive8476

“So after r2-d2 left to get blue milk”

@Halman9000

I wonder what Vader's reaction would be if he had to work with the KOTOR 2 droid companions. Their chemistry is simply unbeatable. HK-47: "Statement. I cannot wait to use my excellent metal skills to destroy all the possible meatbags before permanently stop functioning in this glorious final battle." S3-M4: "Di-Diii!" G0-T0: "If there is anything that can console me in this horrible life or death situation, it is the thought these two morons are going to die with me..."

@Oskareli

Curiously, R2 recorded Anakin's attack on Padmé in Mustafar. Such recording would be kept hidden until Luke snd Leia found it 55 years later, during the Killik invasions. Such discovery made them finally discover who their mother was

@thewanderingcreative7173

Best part about star wars: extensive lore and charactarization for a character you had no idea existed!

@lawrencetalbot8346

I would implore everyone to read the Dark Lord Trilogy as it does a great job summarizing Anakins turn to the dark side (instead of the rather rushed scene in the movie) and then how much he struggled in the first few months in his new Vader suit while coming to grips with embracing the dark side

@wedgeantillies66

There maybe other droids, out there as efficient and competent as r2, but that exceptional little droid is irreplacable to the members of the skywalker family. That it is no surprise that after losing him, Vader only put up with another droid for so long before designing a fighter that didn't need one.

@drob4812

Lets go! This channel is awsome!

@princeofpokemon2934

He straight up replaced his old friend? Vader was already despicable as it is but this is a step way too far!

@glamoroustitanic2184

The “blue milk” line is the icing on the cake of yet another great video. ^^

@maxy073

Aye, new video ! its going to be a great day today !

@davidordaz5251

Love the Lore masters videos

@rafaelnishizumi6330

Ha!!! Artoo left to get Blue Milk!!! Lol!!!

@inductivegrunt94

It's sad how much Anakin's transformation in Darth Vader affected both him and R2. R2 lost his best friend, who he still holds memories of, and Darth Vader no longer cares for what he uses. R4-K5 didn't deserve to be paired with Vader, I just hope he was sent elsewhere and placed under the command of those that cared for him.
