Here at The Cause we do digital marketing
and digital fundraising and today I wanted to talk to you about hashtags because
hashtags are a very important part of your online marketing they allow you to
reach outside of your regular follower base a lot of people follow hashtags nowadays so
they're going to give you a little bit more exposure and we're going to talk about finding
the best possible hashtags for your organization before we start though I have to ask please
comment share like do
all that YouTube stuff the first thing that I want to do when
doing my hashtag research is to sit down and brainstorm some keywords to search and I’m
going to ask myself questions like who are we what do we do who do we help um I know this is
self-promoting but we're going to use us for an example so who are we well we're fundraisers
we're marketers we're content creators and coaches what do we do well we do digital fundraising
digital marketing we do social media management my coaching is
one on one but we also do webinars
and YouTube videos and who do we help we help charitable organizations we help for-profit
organizations and we help professionals in the industry so there I have a really good
list of keywords to potentially research now I also collect hashtags for each of the
pieces of content that we generally can't create but we can talk about that later so now
that I have my list of potential keywords to go and research I’m going to go into the individual
platforms a
nd research them right there there's a lot of programs that do this but if you're a
non-profit organization you can do it for free the LinkedIn twitter YouTube Instagram tic
talk all use hashtags Facebook not so much I don't use hashtags in Facebook some people do
not a problem but for this particular video we're going to go through LinkedIn and Instagram as
two examples of how to do some hashtag research so from my LinkedIn dashboard I can go up to the
search and start typing in some of th
e keywords that we identified and you'll see that it's popped
up a bunch of suggestions well I also want to take those suggestions and research them as well now
if I choose fundraising 101 you can see that nothing pops up there is a suggestion so that is
not a hashtag that I would use but if I click on fundraising there's almost 6 million followers for
that particular hashtag so that is a great hashtag for me to use so the next example we're going
to use is Instagram and again I can type in
my hashtag and I’m going to see a
bunch of other suggestions that pop up but I can also see how many posts so whereas
LinkedIn is how many people follow that hashtag Instagram is how many posts there
are for that particular hashtag I can click on that hashtag and bring up some
examples of how many people or how who has used it and see if and see if my posts are relevant to
what they're posting so what I do at this point is I go through and I list each one of the hashtags
that I’ve tried a
nd then I have another column I use a spreadsheet and put how many followers
that particular hashtag has because I want to in using hashtags use a good mix of highly
trafficked ones and lower trafficked ones so that's it for hashtag research it's
actually pretty easy and I personally just use a spreadsheet with different tabs
so I have one for LinkedIn with all of the relevant hashtags that we use and I have a
separate tab for Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc. I update that spreadsheet proba
bly once
every six months and just to make sure that anything or everything stays relevant and along
the ways as I’m when I’m doing different posts on different topics I’m going to come up with more
hashtags so I also have very niche down hashtags and as always use your analytics see what works
what doesn't work and my final tip my little bonus check out your competitors see what they're
doing see what hashtags they're using and what kind of engagement rate they're getting from
them so tha
