Hii Guys... This is peachy bong..... As a time-traveling, psychologically thrilling, and grim drama, The Call ending needs to be explained for the full weight of the story to be understood. Not to be confused with Lin Shay's American horror film The Call from the same year, nor the 2013 phone horror suspense movieThe Call from 2013, The Call is a 2020 South Korean psychological horror. In the film, a young woman, Kim Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) goes to visit her sick and estranged mother. While she
's back at her childhood home, Seo-yeon finds a cordless telephone and discovers she can make calls to the same house, 20 years in the past. [12:46 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: Seo-yeon connects with Oh Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo), a girl living in her home. The two develop a relationship across time, but when Seo-yeon learns Young-sook dies years later, she changes the past to save her friend. However, Young-sook reveals herself to be not who she claims, and Seo-yeon must figure out a way to not only s
ave her mother's life but her own as well. The Call has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and its tense, chilling story leaves an impression long after the film ends. It's one of the best Korean movies on Netflix, but its twisting, challenging narrative requires paying close attention to fully understand. [12:47 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: Halfway through The Call, it's revealed that Young-sook went on to become a serial killer after Seo-yeon warned her that Young-sook's mother would kill her. So begins a rac
e across the years as Young-sook tries to ruin Seo-yeon's life while Seo-yeon tries to send Young-sook to jail. Realities change until an older Young-sook is alive in 2019, now owning the house that was supposed to be Seo-yeon and her mother's. In 1999, Seo-yeon's mother Eun-ae (Kim Sung-ryung) arrives at Young-sook's house with a police officer. When Eun-ae picks up the cordless phone in 1999, Seo-yeon picks it up in 2019. [12:47 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: Seo-yeon warns her mother that the occupant
of the house is dangerous and urges her to fight back. Just at that moment, Young-sook kills the police officer and attacks Eun-ae as an older Young-sook in 2019 attacks Seo-yeon. Seo-yeon is nearly killed before Young-sook suddenly disappears, and the home once again becomes dilapidated. Seo-yeon rushes outside to see her mother, scarred but alive. The film ends there but a mid-credits scene changes everything. [12:47 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: In the scene, Young-sook from 2019 calls 1999 Young-so
ok and warns her about the police officer and Eun-ae. It's then revealed that Eun-ae did not kill Young-sook and instead died herself. Everything is erased from Seo-yeon's life, and she wakes up tied to a chair, where the 2019 Young-sook prepares to torture her next victim. [12:47 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: At the beginning of the film, Seo-yeon's father, Mr. Kim (Park Ho-san), is shown to have passed away years ago. It's one of the defining conflicts between Seo-yeon and her mother, as Seo-yeon hold
s Eun-ae responsible for starting the fire that ended up killing him. Seo-yeon gets Young-sook to stop the fire and save her father. Once their relationship sours, Young-sook kills Seo-yeon's father herself and kidnaps Seo-yeon from 1999. Once again, her father is dead in 2019. 1999 Young-sook threatens to kill Eun-ae if 2019 Seo-yeon does not give Young-sook information regarding her eventual capture by police. [12:48 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: So, 2019 Seo-yeon is forced to reveal the info to save
her mother, but her father is now permanently dead. Worse yet, Young-sook tells Seo-yeon that Seo-yeon was actually the one responsible for starting the fire that killed her father. Meaning, Seo-yeon could have possibly avoided all of this had she been more careful in 1999. [12:48 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: When Seo-yeon from 2019 receives her mother's call from 1999, she quickly explains that Young-sook will kill her. Just at that moment, Young-sook from 1999 appears, kills the police officer who ca
me with Eun-ae, and attacks her too. Eun-ae is also about to be killed before receiving another call from her daughter in the future, urging her to fight back. Eun-ae and Young-sook grapple and fall violently to the ground where Eun-ae rises back up, but Young-sook stays on the ground as blood pools. When Young-sook disappears in 2019 and Eun-ae appears, it's assumed that her mother was victorious, earning some scars during the fight. [12:48 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: However, the mid-credits scene t
ells a different story. After reuniting, Eun-ae and Seo-yeon walk hand-in-hand through a cemetery. Young-sook is shown lying on the ground covered in blood, where Eun-ae left her, but she then blinks and the film goes back to the scene at the cemetery. Still walking together, Eua-ae flickers before disappearing completely. This indicates that Seo-yeon did not kill Young-sook and after the serial killer woke up, she came back to kill Eun-ae, erasing her from the timeline. [12:48 PM, 2/19/2024] Ha
nna: The mid-credits sequence of The Call is a gut punch at the end of the movie that implies the worst fate for Seo-yeon. In the mid-credits sequence, it's revealed that 2019 Young-sook also called 1999 Young-sook just around the time when Eun-ae and the police officer showed up. 1999 Young-sook was therefore ready for their arrival and shows why she was able to kill the officer so quickly. Though Eun-ae gets the drop on Young-sook, the mid-credits scene shows the killer waking up after being k
nocked out. Evidently, she went on to kill Eun-ae and recapture Seo-yeon in 1999 [12:48 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: That's why, suddenly, Eun-ae disappears and Seo-yeon ends up tied to a chair at Young-sook's mercy. There was a moment when Eun-ae was awake and Young-sook was not. This explains why, in the future, there is a brief period where Eun-ae has been alive this whole time. Once Young-sook wakes up, however, she sets about changing the timeline by killing Eun-ae and capturing Seo-yeon. This exp
lanation offers another horrifying implication for Seo-yeon. If Young-sook killed Eun-ae after she awoke and then captured an eight-year-old Seo-yeon in 1999, then that means Seo-yeon had been a prisoner for 20 years at the time of the mid-credits sequence. [12:49 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: The key to understanding The Call comes from understanding the cordless phone at the center of the story. This phone is the only one that appears to be able to make calls between the past and present, but anyone c
an make those calls. Whoever is on the other side is able to pick it up. Using this phone allows the past, and subsequently, the future to be altered. What's curious about the time-traveling rules in The Call is that Young-sook and Seo-yeon appear to remember the different timelines they've traveled through. Even though others come and go, these two can utilize their knowledge of previous lives. [12:49 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: The Call grapples with feelings of regret and how, in the process of rec
tifying mistakes, even bigger problems can be created. Seo-yeon has a difficult relationship with her mother from the start of the film, and in her yearning for a different life where her father is alive, she ends up creating a monster in the form of Young-sook. Seo-yeon's father dying was a tragedy, one she has clearly mythologized considering she incorrectly blames her mother for it. [12:49 PM, 2/19/2024] Hanna: Despite her loss, Seo-yeon could have made a stronger connection with her one rema
ining parent instead of pushing her further away. Unfortunately, she realizes this all too late. When her mother reappears at the end of the film, Seo-yeon is truly happy to see her, but as quickly as she comes, she's taken away again. She's a victim of Seo-yeon's meddling in the past in The Call.
